BOOK OF STONE: Oswald and Olivia Emerson

For April, Stone Soldiers.info is celebrating the A to Z Blog Challenge with daily letter-themed entries. A separate page with a list of all these entries, plus Character Profiles and Book Synopses will appear on the right hand side of the page in coming weeks, detailing the people, places and things of the Stone Soldiers universe.

OSWALD AND OLIVIA EMERSON
First Appearance:   Infernal Machine
Description:  Psychic Hackers
Last Known Status:   Unknown
Summary:
Twins possessing a unique psychic connection that allowed them to effectively network their brains, Oswald "Ozzy" Emerson and Olivia "Olive" Emerson became child prodigies in the 1980s, bypassing other computer geniuses and establishing themselves as the pre-eminent hackers in the United States. With this rise to the top however, they quickly found themselves on a Most Wanted list and were arrested by Federal authorities.

Rather than sentence the teenagers to prison however, the National Security Agency hired them to construct a computer network capable of analyzing and decrypting radio transmissions from around the world, replacing hundreds of analysts.

In 1987, Oswald used the MAXIM computer network he and his sister devised to decode an unusual Extreme Low Frequency sound emanating from far below the city of Sydney, Australia.

Detachment 1039 was tasked with investigating the source of the encrypted plea for help, and uncovered an ancient, supernatural computer built by a malevolent entity intent on erasing mankind from the surface of the Earth.

In the aftermath of the machine's destruction, the Emerson twins were transferred to Detachment 1039's command to oversee the use of the MAXIM network to track and monitor dark threats to humanity.

Author's Notes:
I admit it, I love the show Person of Interest. Partly because it reminds me of Remo Williams, the Destroyer, partly because the Machine is one of the coolest characters ever. It's darn near what I've wanted to do for years, and was leading up to in my own series, Stone Soldiers.

So I was inspired... to reveal (or rather, retcon) my own A.I.'s backstory, I needed hackers. Psychic-linked twins sounded cool. And what better name than Emerson? As always, Fringe played a big part in Stone Soldiers continuing evolution, so I wanted a character named "Olive". Ozzy and Olive were born.

Where are they now? Well, I would imagine that once Max was entrusted with operations on his own (1995), the super-twins were whisked away to some other project. Or maybe they are working on their own. In any event, now that I've made them in the prequels, I guess I'll just have to fit them in, grown up a little, somewhere in the Stone Soldiers or Shadow Raiders series...

BOOK OF STONE: Duath

For April, Stone Soldiers.info is celebrating the A to Z Blog Challenge with daily letter-themed entries. A separate page with a list of all these entries, plus Character Profiles and Book Synopses will appear on the right hand side of the page in coming weeks, detailing the people, places and things of the Stone Soldiers universe.

DUATH

First Appearance:   Dark Invaders
Description:   Human-Fell Hybrid
Last Known Status:   Executed, 1954
Summary:
In 1954, the United States was visited by two saucer-shaped aircraft, carrying emissaries on diplomatic missions. Each group proclaimed themselves extraterrestrials and attempted to convince the U.S. Military to enter into a treaty to fight the other emissaries in exchange for advanced technology.

One group of visitors, consisted of  tall, pale-skinned human-appearing beings with long white hair. These three beings, classified Nordics, fitting the descriptions given by many alien abductee victims, were named Nuada, Galath and Duath.

Captain Mark Kenslir of Detachment 1039 managed to successfully interrogate the third emissary, Duath, learning of the Nordic's true place of origin--the Moon--and their intent to one day invade and conquer the Earth in service of their master, a supernatural entity.

Like most Nordics of his species, Duath stood about 7 feet tall. He was of slender build, with long white hair and physical strength greater than that of even the strongest man. Duath was attached to Nuada, the emissary to the United States from a Lunar Colony ruled by the First Born Fell Hubal. The last of his mission to be interrogated, Duath succumbed to a regimen of torture and eventually revealed the plan of the Nordics--to trick the United States into disarmament so that Hubal's armies could invade and conquer the Earth.

After his execution immediately following interrogation, Duath's head was removed and shipped separately from his body to a secret government laboratory for testing.

Behind the Scenes:
The 1954 landing at Edwards AFB is actually based on an event UFOers swear is real--the meeting of President Eisenhower with extraterrestrials. For Stone Soldiers I decided i might be fun to make aliens actually turn out to be demonic, netherworldly creatures trying to trick mankind. After perusing all the possible events I could use, I though the '54 incident was the best suited to a story of super soldiers and false aliens.

Author's Notes:
Dark Invaders started as a flashback section of One Dark Step, the 11th Stone Soldiers novel, which takes Detachment 1039 to the Moon to fight the false god Hubal and his legion of Nordics and Huldufolk. But when I got done with 1DS, I decided that there was a touch more of the 1954 encounter I needed to tell.

And yes, the Nordics are he elves of the Stone Soldiers universe. I just wish coming up with names was easier...

BOOK OF STONE: Circle of Gwynne

For April, Stone Soldiers.info is celebrating the A to Z Blog Challenge with daily letter-themed entries. A separate page with a list of all these entries, plus Character Profiles and Book Synopses will appear on the right hand side of the page in coming weeks, detailing the people, places and things of the Stone Soldiers universe.

CIRCLE OF GWYNNE

First Appearance:   Spellbreaker
Summary:   Secret Society
Last Known Status:   Unknown
Author's Notes:
In 1968, Colonel Mark Kenslir was sent to Africa to investigate reports of a Voodoo Warlord seizing control in the war-torn country of Ghana. Along the way, Kenslir encountered an agent of the Crown, John Ash, ostensibly working to uncover what had happened to British expatriates.
Ash quickly revealed himself to be a Templar--one of England's own super-soldiers fielded to counter the supernatural forces of the world. But Ash was more than what he seemed, and by mission's end, Kenslir confirmed his suspicions: the Templars had been infiltrated by dark forces bent on ruling England, and the world.
Tortured, Ash revealed the identity of his dark Masters, the "Circle of Gwynne". But who were these mysterious mages lurking in the shadows?
England has a long history of secret societies, and popular culture often likes to fixate on the Druids, a pagan religious order many believe built Stonehenge. Could this mysterious Circle be druids?
In Celtic mythology, Gwyn ap Nudd was believed to be the ruler of the the underworld, escorting the souls of the dead there. If a dark circle of mages bent on world domination wanted to worship an entity with malevolent intentions for mankind, Gwynn certainly fits the bill--especially given the Druids prospered during Celtic times.
In 1997, as Hong Kong prepared for Chinese rule, Mark Kenslir again encountered a secret society of mages, this time using the internet to plan and commit sacrificial murders around the world. Tracking them to their meting place in Hong Kong, Kenslir eliminated the entire organization, or did he? (Satan's Servers)
What if the circle lived on? What if their reach extended beyond Great Britain and its former colonies? What if the Circle of Gwynne was a global organization? Readers of Seven Deadly Sons (Stone Soldiers #7) might have suspected some hidden organization, referred to in the book as Der Kreis. German for :"The Circle".
Will the Circle of Gwynne return to fight the Stone Soldiers again?

BOOK OF STONE: General Bartholomew J. Black

MAJOR GENERAL BARTHOLOMEW J. BLACK
First Appearance:  Shades of War (Stone Soldiers #4)
Synopsis:  Commander of Detachment 1039 prior to Colonel Kenslir
Last Known Status:  Unknown
Author's Notes:

Every military unit has a commander, and Detachment 1039 is no different. In 1947, at the insistence of General Frank Merrill, the United States Army formed a small unit tasked with developing combat strategies for opposing supernatural and paranormal forces fielded by enemy nations. Originally created as a military intelligence unit, the Detachment was placed under the command of then-Captain Bartholomew J. Black, a U.S. soldier with firsthand knowledge of the supernatural.
By 1950, with the outbreak of the Korean War, Black had risen in rank to Major, and had recruited and trained a special unit of parahuman supersoldiers and psychics to for counter dark operations.
In the years following the Korean Conflict, Black rose steadily through the ranks, carefully managing his growing detachment and the supernatural threat to America.
By 1995 (X-Ponent) Black had risen to the rank of Major General, and his Detachment was now a subordinate command of U.S. Special Operations Command.

Behind the ScenesLittle has been revealed about General Black's origins. In Shadow Detachment  , he expresses that he is himself a regular soldier, not possessing any powers. However, he relies on a unique Tarot card deck that grants him the ability to zero in on supernatural threats.
In 1954, Black and then-Captain Mark Kenslir responded to Edwards Air Force Base in California to investigate the appearance of not one, but two extraterrestrial craft flown by beings professing to be from the stars. ( Dark Invaders )
In 1987, Black sent Lt. Col Kenslir to Australia to investigate a strange, subterranean plea for help beneath the City of Sydney.
By 2013, and Mythical  (Stone Soldiers #1), Black is nowhere to be seen, and Colonel Kenslir has assumed command of the Detachment.
Does this mean that Black has retired? Died?
Follow future installments of Stone Soldiers and Shadow Detachment for more on the mysterious Bartholomew J. Black and his supernatural origins....

Book of Stone: ALCATRAZ

For April, Stone Soldiers.info is celebrating the A to Z Blog Challenge with daily letter-themed entries. A separate page with a list of all these entries, plus Character Profiles and Book Synopses will appear on the right hand side of the page in coming weeks, detailing the people, places and things of the Stone Soldiers universe.

ALCATRAZ

First Appearance:  Blood and Stone (Stone Soldiers #3)
Description:  Maximum Security prison for parahumans and mages
Last Known Status: Undetermined
Author's Notes:

Located in San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz Island has been home to soldiers and criminals. In our world, the prison was closed on March 2, 1963 by Attorney General Robert Kennedy. Today, it stands as a landmark and tourist attraction.
In the Stone Soldiers' universe however, the prison was not closed. John F. Kennedy wasn't assassinated and the world was a very different place by 1963. When America began incarcerating the growing number of parahumans and mages, the facility found new use as the ultimate prison for the supernaturally-dangerous.
In addition to its natural barriers against escape, the prison also relied heavily on pharmaceutical containment of its high-powered inmates, keeping the population drugged and docile. In 1974, this was bolstered by an unexpected addition to the inmate population: Laura Olson, a vampire recruited by Detachment 1039 to assist in locating undead cells around the world through an empathic bond with her own kind.
Under careful surveillance, Olson was allowed to serve her residency on the medical staff, feeding on the inmate population not only to sustain herself but to ensure none of the prisoners could manage any uprising or escape.
In 2013, the prison was assaulted by an outside supernatural force--the antediluvian shapeshifter Tezcahtlip, who murdered the entire inmate population and staff and attempted to do the same to the vampire MD.
Fortunately, Olson survived thanks to her undead powers and joined Detachment 1039 in pursuing the shapeshifter to Mexico where it was posing a the Aztec god Kukulcan.

Behind the ScenesAlcatraz has not been featured in any further books. It is entirely possible the prison was re-staffed and new inmates slowly brought in. Lore tells us vampires nor ghosts can't cross running water, so it seems a fitting location to lock up supernatural beings.

Coming Soon: X-Ponent...

XPONENT
When a rogue band of superhumans launch a series of terrorist attacks inside the United States, the military springs into action. To hunt down the paranormal perpetrators will take more than the average soldier. It will require a special person, immune to mental manipulation and invisible to psychic detection. A hardened veteran of a dark war against the supernatural and paranormal, with decades of combat experience under his belt. The only problem is, Colonel Mark Kenslir is no detective--he's a commando who's spent a lifetime working alongside psychics against the armies of darkness whenever they've shown their faces, not chasing down clues. Finding an unseen enemy hiding in plain sight may well prove beyond his incredible combat skills. Fortunately, Kenslir has the one other partner able to resist psychic detection--an Artificial Intelligence programmed with the sum knowledge of humanity and a thirst for justice.
