Let's celebrate the season in real style and talk about some delicious Vampires

Between all the insanity, and the piles of homework I have to do, I've finally found a moment to do something I truly love!

I had the wonderful opportunity to sit down with fellow author Katie Salidas at her hauntingly lovely site Written in Blood, and let her know what inspired me to write about vampires.

No, vamps weren't my first love–My Lord Raven held my heart for decades.

I have to admit, though, there was that one fateful moment where I looked at a vamp and went…WOW!  They do have something here that draws on the senses, pulls at the heart, and can really drag a reader into the realms of the unexplained.  Was it Alex O'Loughlin from Moonlight that captured me first, or was it the haunting good looks of Gerard Butler in Dracula 2000?  Perhaps it was the luscious Edward from Twilight, or the quintessential grace and charm of Lestat that stole my heart and mind?

Find out more on October 31 at the home of author Katie Salidas http://www.katiesalidas.com/   and join me for a little bit of naughty Vampire Awareness!

Finally, France is at my fingertips…

Image via Wikipedia

Nearly 3 decades ago, I took a 4th of July trip to Paris.

What can I tell you about the city that you haven't already heard?  Probably nothing, but I'll try.:)

The Eiffel Tower blew my mind as I stood under it–a towering beauty in the midst of so much bustling life.  The Champs Elysees was everything from the movies, the Paris Opera house was just as dark and mysterious, and so structurally gorgeous, and I could envision the Phantom hiding beneath.  The Mona Lisa is a very small painting, but you can only determine this from standing in the museum, which was so much more beautiful without that monstrosity of a pyramid.  Versailles astounded me–mirrored walls that made me cringe when I imagined getting the shine just right, and its courtyard filled with tour buses.  Even then, my mind would wonder back to this 'must go' place in history, when the world was younger and people were more involved.

Yes, I did eat escargot, much to the dismay of my travel partners!  I have always believed that 'when in Rome…" theory.  So, when in Paris, I ate as the Parisians.  I went to a darling restaurant on the tour and my American counterparts insisted on ordering steaks and fries, or hamburgers.  I wasn't having anything to do with that.  I was in France, and even though I was 6 months pregnant, I was immersing myself in the total French experience.  No American food or drink for me–I had my cafe au lait, my delicious little French pastries, and my escargot.

No, they are not as gross as most would think–they're just different.

I pull out the pictures now and then, reminiscing about that time.  Those pictures are beginning to fade, just like the rest of the old snapshots, but the images of me and my bulging stomach beneath the iron structure that symbolizes such a lovely country brings back fond memories.

Yesterday, Amazon announced that I'm off to France again; to enjoy the changing of the leaves and a centuries old capital that still captures my attention!  I couldn't be more proud to know that Blood of the Beast, Blood Moon, Angel's Fire, Demon's Blood, and my other romances are now in that wonderful country!

If you haven't heard, I'm also in Germany and the stunning British Isles, but only at AMAZON!

What's on my reading list this week? J.R. Lindermuth's Fallen From Grace

A few months ago, I finished reading an epic thriller that set me on the edge of my seat.  Being Someone Else held me captive until the very last page, and I couldn't get enough of some truly fascinating characters that seemed to burst from the pages.  I discovered an author, in the mean time, whose work I love.

J. R. Lindermuth is the author of nine novels, including four in the Sticks Hetrick mystery series set in a fictional rural community near Harrisburg, PA. A retired newspaper editor/writer, he is now librarian of his county's historical society where he assists patrons with research and genealogy. He has published stories and articles in a variety of magazines, both print and on line.

Excerpts from his novels, reviews and other information are available at http://jlind11.tripod.com and http://jrlindermuth.com

This week, J.R. Lindermuth's latest work, Fallen From Grace, is on my reading list.

Fallen From GraceBLURB:

As the 19th century winds to a close, Sheriff Sylvester Tilghman of the small Pennsylvania town of Arahpot ponders his biggest problems: finding a new deputy and convincing his true love, Lydia, to marry him. But an early autumn day finds Arahpot's usual tranquility shaken when a stranger is fatally stabbed.Upon seeing the victim, Tilghman recalls witnessing a strained encounter between him and Valentine Deibert, an obese man with a wife half his age who had recently moved to Arahpot. The sheriff questions Deibert who denies knowing the victim.Tilgman is unconvinced, but lacks a connection until the widow arrives in Arahpot. Suddenly Sylvester is plunged into investigating two murders. As he works through an abundance of motivated suspects, Tilghman finds himself in danger. And worse — Lydia is pushing her obnoxious cousin as a candidate for deputy.

My review of Ambasadora by Heidi Ruby Miller

AmbasadoraFinally!

Between all the homework, I managed to slide a few books into my reading and review list for the week!  I can honestly tell you I have been one hell of a lucky girl, for I've read some really excellently written novels over the past 10 months.  Not a single one has made me push it aside and mutter UGH! under my breath.  Besides reading Heidi's book this week, I managed to squeeze in a copy of The Help and start J.R. Lindermuth's thriller Fallen From Grace.

Meanwhile, let me get back to the stunning tale of Ambasadora!

BLURB:

If everyone told you love wasn't real, would you still be willing to die for it?

Sara Mendoza and Sean Cryer are.

In their multi-partner, caste-ruled society, love and jealousy are considered emotional fallacies, nothing more than fleeting moods and sentiments biased by hormones. Relationships and conceptions in this world obsessed with celebrity, beauty, and power are based on DNA and lineages…or should be. But not everyone believes in the ruling traditions of the all-powerful Embassy. A quiet rebellion prowls the dark underground of this shiny world where techno-militants calling themselves fraggers grow in numbers and bravado. The Embassy intends to silence the fragger movement before the heresy of equality spreads throughout the system.

Sara Mendoza is part of the Embassy's plan. Captured, tortured, and falsely accused of treason, she is given a chance to win back her freedom. She only needs to charm information from one of the fragger leaders, then kill him. But by the time she figures out the Embassy's intel is flawed and that Sean Cryer is her true mark, she's already in love with him.

Sean knows why Sara is on his ship from the start, but as a lonely, anti-social doser, he doesn't value his life, only his ideology within the fragger organization. Against his better judgment, he becomes her protector, each day caring more about a future he was always afraid to hope for.

My Review:

First of all, I'm not a fan of the sci-fi romance genre.  I was turned off years ago when a quite famous author slid away from her Regency romance series and wrote one that totally turned me.  In order to get me to read one is like pulling teeth–I frown and dread every moment of it.

Ms. Miller and Amabasadora has changed my opinion.  The half-naked, brainless, green hued  female idea was solidly trashed, as well as the unbelievable aliens from another world.

Heidi has brought the tale of Sara and Sean into vivid life.  I hated the world of Sovereign Simon Prollixer–where people are forced into an outdated and very prejudicial caste system.  Shame means suicide, and sterility brings shame.

The rotten thing is, in the world of Prollixer, fertility can be taken away when you're accused of a crime.

Only the beautiful have better educations and jobs, and they mingle with only others of their kind.  Personally, I sided with the Fraggers–a group of solid individuals who hate everything about the embassy and rebel every chance they get.

I adored Sara and every moment she appeared.  Sara is bright, determined, and she endures throughout the entire tale.  She captures the reader's attention with a vibrance that is so very real, and the scenes of her torture made me gasp.  I loved some characters, hated others, and cheered for the strongest female heroine I've read in a while.

Riveting, well written, and a total gem among the Sci-Fi  romance, Ms. Miller's Ambasadora has renewed my faith in the genre and deserves an intergalactic 5 Stars!

What's on my reading list this week? Ambasadora by Heidi Ruby Miller

Back in June, I had the good fortune to interview Heidi Ruby Miller about her futuristic novel, Ambasadora.  Finally, I've had the time to slip into the pages of this entrancing tale, and I'll be posting my review this week!

Meanwhile, let me refresh your memory about the novel and this fabulous author:

Image of A few weeks ago, I read a fantastic how-to book entitled Many Genres, One Craft.  Besides being a great step-by-step manual for aspiring and published authors, there were a multitude of fantastic bits and pieces from other writers.  Each week, I've made it a point to introduce my readers to the authors spotlighted in the book.

Heidi's wrote the following articles in Many Genres, One Craft: "Tomorrow's Kiss: The Duality of SF Romance","Be an Archetype, Not a Stereotype", "Touring Virtually", "The Shifting Grail: In Search of a Good Read", and  "I'll Scratch Your Back and You Review My Book".  Great stuff and, if you haven't picked up your copy yet, you don't know what you're missing!

Besides writing informative how-to's, Heidi writes novels where stories where the relationship is as important as the adventure. She loves science fiction, high-heeled shoes, action movies, Chanel, loud music, and of course, romance.

Heidi also teaches creative writing at Seton Hill University, where she graduated from their renowned Writing Popular Fiction Graduate Program.  The writing guide Many Genres, One Craft, which she co-edited with Michael A. Arnzen, is based on the Seton Hill program and her novel Ambasadora was her thesis there.

My review of The Brothers Cameron by Jesse V Coffey

If you've noticed, I've been a few posts short this week.  No, I'm not AWOL, my friends.  I'm up to my proverbial neck handling my courses for the fall at the local community college.  I just finished my third test in statistics in two days, and my brain is fried!  Honestly, the class barely makes sense, and I've had nightmares about it!  My boys got a good giggle from my uncomfortable night's worth of sleep, though.  As they said–they never knew of anyone who studied in their dreams!

Anyways, earlier this week I decided to take a spin into the world of swashbuckling heroes and damsel's in distress and read The Brothers Cameron by Jesse V. Coffey.    My review is following this post:

Image of J. W. CoffeyThe author was born in Kentucky, raised in Florida, and spent half her life in Ohio. Half southern rebel, half Yankee sass, she's managed to straddle both sides of the Mason-Dixon line and happily claims both as part of her wild existence. Having a varied employment history–working as everything from fast food cashier to telephone psychic, Ms. Coffey has managed to parlay her life experiences (along with what some would call a too vivid and active imagination)into her novels.

"I never just answer a question, I have to tell a story." And with critics and readers alike, she does it well.

Ms. Coffey is currently a member of ASCAP, the Erotic Authors Association, and writes three columns for the news website, Examiner.com/Lexington, as the Literary Examiner and Writing Examiner for the city of Lexington, KY, where she is a resident, as well as the National Indie Romance Novel Examiner. She also hosts an online radio show titled Edin Road Radio, where she uses her gift of gab to showcase new authors and their books.

Ms. Coffey writes as Jesse V Coffey, J. W. Coffey, and Meggie Chase.

Book Blurb:

The Brothers Cameron: An Opportunity for ResentmentStephan Cameron is impetuous and lusty; William Cameron is measured and romantic. Only one thing can divide the brothers–an attraction to the Lady Jessica Chynoweth, a flirty redhead who seems to have eyes for both–and Baron Joseph Turnbull as well. Only one thing can bring them together again–bringing the murderer of their father to justice. If it doesn't kill them first, they will!

Right now, it's available only at Amazon and Smashwords. It will be available everywhere else (B&N, iTunes/iBookstore, Sony, Kobe, etc) at the end of the month.

My Review:

The Brothers Cameron: An Opportunity for Resentment reminded me of one of those swashbuckling movies from the 1940s, filled with unlikely heroes, brothers that are polar opposites of each other, and a charmingly beautiful damsel in distress.  Stephan and Will Cameron are those two brothers–totally different in every way.  The darn Cameron family is on the bad side of the local Baron Turnbull, who decides he's had enough of them.  Stephan's childhood pal, Mary, has grown up to be a looker who's in financial straits.  A new arrival in town, in the form of the lovely Lady Jessica, is chasing after Mary's favorite men, and the boys are having a hard time getting along.

Drama!  Tons of drama, action, unexpected twists and turns, and a timeless magic fills the pages of this book.  I spent the free moments of my evening imagining a dashing Errol Flynn and Tyrone Powers playing these handsome boys in a cinematic version of the best action/adventure/romance I've read in a while!

Standing applause, Ms. Coffey, and a rousing 5 STARS!

Welcoming Fall with Open Arms

Books - bookcase top shelf

September is drawing to a close.

I'm not complaining, I'm ready for the change in the season.  I love waking up in the morning and feeling the slight nip in the air, and it's time for baking.  Halloween is just around the corner, followed by all my favorite holidays. I've wrapped up the ending of Chapter 5 to Tears of Blood, my paranormal romance involving my heroic vampire and his blind love.  I can't wait to have Amado's story out, he's entrancing, captiving, and as soul stealing as his film past whispers!

Sadly enough, though, October 1st brings the end to the special being ran by my publishers!  :(

If you haven't had the chance, drop on by Amazon or 1 Place for Romance and pick up your copies of Blood of the Beast, Blood Moon, My Lord Raven, and Moonlight Deception for a stunning price!  You can click on my page links at the top of this page and read a bit behind the novels and Happy Reading!

Meanwhile, my reading list is filled with some really great novels!

This month, I'll be catching up on the thrills, chills, and romance behind:

 J.R. Lindermuth's Fallen From Grace: http://www.amazon.com/Fallen-From-Grace-ebook/dp/B0051PDXZ8/

Sabine Atkin's Varangian: The Stone of Babylon: http://www.amazon.com/Varangian-Stone-Babylon-ebook/dp/B005KN3XOC/

My review of Phantom Lives–Collier

As promised earlier this week, I'm back with my review of Phantom Lives–Collier by talented author, Elizabeth Loraine.

Blurb:

Abigail Black, an heiress from Memphis is on the run from her abusive boyfriend, Dallas. In the process she finds out that there she is being pulled towards something, and someone, that she thought only existed in her dreams.

My Review:

I believe, in our life, there is that one special place or person that captures us from the moment we see them.  Abigail Black, escaping an abusive boyfriend, knows such a feeling.  I can't blame her, though; a plantation house usually tends to whisk the breath from me the moment I stare at the grand pillars, and imagine the lives shaped by the shadows of the structure.

Abbi's a wise girl and fortunately well off—and she buys Collier mansion.  The lure of the building calls to her, constantly drawing her more into its silken embrace, which escalates when she decides to restore the place.

Now, anyone that's ever watched or read anything about the paranormal knows, restoration can often stir up the spirit world…

Past lives, destiny, and ghosts…my favorite ingredient for a stellar novel!  The characters of this novel clutched at my heart, and stole my breath away.  Collier was a home I would love to visit—as fascinating as the Deep South and as mysterious as they come.  Intrigue spills from each page and I couldn't put the novel down, afraid that I would miss some vital piece of information from this well-written plot.

I can't wait for Elizabeth Loraine's next masterpiece and more of the Phantom Lives Series.

4 stars

Shall I ask you to walk on the dark side of the moon?

Blood of the Beast (The Blood Chronicles)As  you can tell, September has been a very busy month for me.  Birthdays, back to school, and everything else, I've decided to post a special for my readers.  For the month of September only (in celebration of my birthday) I'm offering my romance novels at an amazing $1.99 at 1 Place for Romance and Amazon!

So, in light of the special, I'm filling you in on the first paranormal novel of the Blood Chronicles series!

Blurb:

A killer of the most horrendous kind plagues the city of Bentham, New Jersey.  A serial killer haunts the streets, preying on homeless men, and leaving the blood drained victims on the doorsteps on hapless homeowners in a section of town called Little Europe.

Valentina Kureyev attempts to solve the horrific murders of homeless men within her particular section of a large city.  Along the way, she encounters a museum curator that grants her a frightening insight into the world that exists when one walks on the dark side of the moon.

Detective Valentina Kureyev had been assigned to one of the worst cases of the century.  A serial killer haunted the streets, depositing bloodless corpses throughout the section of town known as Little Europe.

She hadn't a clue to the identity of the culprit, as the appearance of more bodies had begun to cause terror and panic.  The case was hopeless and the terror was real.

As real as Demetri Petronov.

The Professor of Russian Antiquities had been targeted with the murderer's special form of a calling card.  Val couldn't turn away from his offer of aide in the bizarre case, even though he whispered tales of the beast feeding on human blood.

He was the primary suspect.

Don't forget to stop by MY LEADS page at http://tamelaquijas.webs.com and see whom I would like to play the main characters in BLOOD OF THE BEAST

Reviews:

…I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery/action/vampire/love story.  I have actually already read the 2nd book in this series and am looking forward to reading the third.

…Ms. Quijas' prose and elegance leaps from page one, and holds the reader captive until the last.  For fans of lush, delightfully dark romance, this is a must-read!
