Victory over Allen University

BOBCATS BATTLE RAIN TO EARN SECOND WIN Ave Maria UniversityNext Game:Ave Maria University10/26/2019 | 12 p.m.PREVIEWBUY TICKETSLIVE STATSWATCH LIVEFULL SCHEDULEROSTERMATCHUP HISTORYCOLUMBIA, S.C. (October 19, 2019) - Before the opening kickoff, it became clear the Bobcats had more than one opponent on Saturday. In addition to the Allen University Yellow Jackets (1-5), St. Thomas University (2-4) had to battle the elements of rain on the path to the programs' second-ever victory.

St. Thomas began the game on the defensive, quickly forcing an Allen three-and-out, while allowing only seven drives yards. St. Thomas also went three-and-out, however, on the ensuing STU punt, AU blocked the kick and recovered in the end-zone to take a 7-0 lead. The Bobcats did not waste much time in tying the game, Robert Armes (16/172/TD) scored his only touchdown of the game, on his longest carry, 66-yards to paydirt to get the Bobcats on the board.

On the following Bobcats possession, an interception gave AU the football on the STU 40-yard line. Within five plays, the Yellow Jackets once again had the lead, 14-7. St. Thomas pushed Allen back seven-yards on AU's final possession of the first quarter, as the Bobcats started the second quarter with the ball on the 37-yard line. Billy McConnell cut the deficit to 14-10, with his first Field Goal make of the game. Midway through the second quarter, Allen added a field goal to extend their lead to 17-10, and the score remained through halftime.

It took St. Thomas until the Bobcats third possession of the second half to tie the game, 17-17. Quarterback, Kalani Ilimaleota - Adams, making his first career collegiate start, found Lewis Oviedo on an eight-yard touchdown toss. STU's defense held firm, maintaining momentum for the Bobcats by finishing back-to-back stops, not allowing a muffed punt to distract the unit. Allen missed a go-ahead field goal, allowing STU to regain possession on the 27-yard line. The Bobcats could not maintain a drive, following an Armes 18-yard rush and punted, McConnell pinned the Yellow Jackets inside the 20-yard line and the defensive forced another three-and-out.

As Allen went to punt the ball away, Bobcat special teamer, Mark Fontana, sped around the Allen offensive line, blocking the punt and recovering the loose ball to give STU the lead at 24-17. Allen's special teams unit continued to struggle, a poor snap provided St. Thomas with excellent field position, well inside AU territory,at the 20-yard line with STU looking to add to their lead.

McConnell added another field goal, 22-yards, extending the STU lead to 27-17. Allen made a change at quarterback, in an effort to spark the offense. The switch worked, Allen drove the length of the field, scoring in four plays. However, on the extra point attempt, Anthony Sumner brought a  botched snap back for a safety, adding to the Bobcats lead at 29-23.

The Bobcat defense once again proved to be the difference, graduate transfer, Keshun Horton, forced a fumble and recovered in the endzone, pushing the lead to 36-23. In an attempt for a drastic comeback, Allen started a drive on their 33-yard line and drove to within the Bobcat forty.

Jhaqwori Austin sealed the second St. Thomas University Football win with an interception on the goal line, giving STU the ball with two minutes remaining.

The rain did not deter the Bobcats, as STU completed the programs' second win and first comeback victory.

Game NotesThe Bobcats won the toss and elected to defer the kick-off until the second half, starting the game on the defensive side of the ball for the first time this season. The STU defense forced a quick "three-and-out", allowing -4 yards, setting up a Point punt. Jordan Sepulveda led the Bobcats down the field, completing consecutive 10-yard passes for first downs, getting the ball inside the PU 30-yardline.St. Thomas sputtered inside the 25-yard line, electing to go for it on fourth down and failed to convert to turn the ball over on downs.STU defense once again flexed their muscle, allowing only 11-yards on Point's next offensive possession. On the punt however, STU misplayed the ball, as it bounced into the end-zone and was recovered by the Skyhawks for a touchdown, as PU took a 7-0 lead. The Bobcats defense continued to dominate, throughout the first quarter, forcing a fumble, which forced Point to lose 17-yards.Following the forced fumble, Justice Johnson blocked a punt and recovered the free-ball in the end-zone for a Bobcats special teams touchdown, tying the game at 7-7.Point failed to recover the ensuing kick-off and STU recovered the football on the PU 22-yard line.St. Thomas could not capitalize on the prime field position, getting stopped on the goal line, setting up a field goal attempt.McConnell's field goal attempt was blocked and recovered by Point at their 32-yard line.On the following PU drive, a tipped pass from Jayson Contreras to Shariff Rodriguez, resulted in an interception.STU began the second quarter with the ball and completed an offensive scoring drive for the first time in the game, as a second McConnell attempt went through the uprights to give St. Thomas the lead at 10-7.The Bobcat defense stood firm once again, preventing PU from scoring from inside the 25-yard line and forcing a turnover on downs.Lewis Oviedo took the next run 77-yards, untouched to score and gave St. Thomas a 17-7 lead, midway through the second quarter.Point responded with a touchdown drive of their own, going 75-yards in 2:41 and capping off the scoring drive with a one-yard Quarterback keeper. With less than two minutes remaining in the first half, Sepulveda connected with D'amaunte Oliver on a five-yard touchdown pass, as the duo gave St. Thomas the largest lead of the game at 24-14.Point returned the next kick-off 98-yards, scoring as time expired, to head into the half, trailing 24-21.Opening the second half with the ball, STU's offense went "three-and-out", however, on the fourth down punt, a roughing the kicker gave STU a second life on the drive. St. Thomas still could not advance the ball past the 50-yard line and punting again. Point's next drive featured some luck, as the Skyhawks recovered their second fumble of the game, this time recovering for a first down.Four plays later, the Skyhawks were in front again, scoring from 19-yards out and taking a 28-24 lead.Midway through the fourth quarter, Point added a field goal to go up 31-24.The Bobcats had another kick blocked, this time a punt, as Point recovered at the STU 22-yard line.Point scored another touchdown, extending their lead to 38-24.Sepulveda led the Bobcats down the field once again, throwing the ball 11-times before finding Oviedo for his second touchdown of the game to put the score at 38-31.St. Thomas could not recover the onside kick, losing 38-31.We played at St. Thomas Aquantis HS in Lauderdale, home of one of the great HS sports programs in the country.
