Thursday Musings

Hey, there.  Been a while.  Things get crazy sometimes, but don't fret.  I'm back.  Feel free to commence adoring me again.

Isn't it weird that we'll push our television and movie technology to absurd levels of "improvement" while we're still debating whether or not we should burn oil and coal to power our world?  We'll rush out to buy the new I-phone 4, which is only a marginal improvement on an already perfectly good product, but we refuse to buy more efficient cars.  What's the deal with...

Belated Movie Discussion Time

Did you ever notice that sometimes, you need some time to think about something before you really make up your mind?  In that tradition, I bring you some random thoughts about movies that were released a while ago but that took me a while to figure out how I felt.

LEGION

The premise to Legion was promising.  If you've read the Bible (or have even a passing knowledge of it) then you know God (in the Old Testament & quite a bit in the New Testament as well) could be a capricious and vengeful...

In Which, I Discuss Wonder Woman and Superhero Costumes In General

DC has decided to change Wonder Woman's backstory and origin.  They've also decided to change her iconic costume.

My first reaction is: beats actually trying to write a good story with a character DC hasn't had a clue about for decades now.

My second reaction is a little more nuanced.

On the costume:  Superhero costumes should be simple.  Simple colors.  Simple patterns.  Maybe an iconic logo.  It should be easily identifiable, shouldn't be too busy.  It should get the job done and not much...

Sin & Punishment: A Wii Game Review

I was originally going to do a review of SIN & PUNISHMENT for Wii as part of a larger blog entry, but then I thought, why?  Why short change this wonderful, old school game when really, it deserves an entire entry all to itself.

Sin & Punishment is a third person rail shooter from Treasure games.  Treasure will always hold a special place in my heart for making one of the most awesome, woefully underrated, games for Sega Genesis: Gunstar Heroes.  Gunstar Heroes was a classic of straight up...

How to Be a Panelist

Went to Apollocon this weekend.  Great time, as usual.  Fun folks, pleasant environment, and a chance to connect with fans and friends.  Bought a Transformers: Animated Grimlock and Blitzwing figure, and just had a solid weekend.

One of the things I do (as a semi-famous novelologist) is sit on panels.  It's always a weird thing to me that this is something people want to see, but they do.  I don't want to brag or anything, but I'm no slouch in the panelist department.  Now, since most of you r...

DC Doesn't Stand for Diversity Comics

Been a while since I've blogged.  Been busy, but I figured I'd drop by and  share some thoughts.

So recently Ian Sattler of DC Comics, when confronted with the possibility of racial insentitivity, was quoted as saying something along the lines of: "Well, I just don't get it because it's not our intention."  He also added that DC Comics have a very diverse cast of characters, including green, blue, and orange characters.

Okay, the "blue, green, and orange" response completely misses the point.  ...

Go Go Blue Beetle!

Hey, hey.  How's it going?

So there's talk of a Blue Beetle live-action TV series.  I don't know if it'll happen, but I'm not sure I'm for it.  I love the new Blue Beetle for so many reasons, and I  just have a hard time imagining they'd do him justice.  Especially since they're apparently hoping to make him a replacement for Smallville.  One of those things I loved about BB is that the comic sidesteps a lot of the teen angst and dares to treat all of its characters as if they were sensible...

The Dark Secrets of Scooby Doo Revealed

Netflix on Wii is just unbelievable.  Seriously.  There's no other word for it.  It's like we're living in the future and don't even know it.  Right now, I'm finishing up Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, and after this, who knows?  The world is at my fingertips, and it's just something we take for granted.

By the by, Batman Beyond; Return of the Joker is a definitive Batman story as far as I'm concerned.  I think I prefer the edited version.  Not because of the blood in the darker version, ...

Syfy Original Movie Title Winners!

So here we are.  Finally!  The announcement of the winners of the first ever A. Lee Martinez Create Your Own Original Syfy Movie Title contest.  We had a ton of great entries, gang.  If I could, I'd give you all a book, but that would just spoil you.  But rather than just one winner, I've decided to have one grand prize winner as well as two runners up.

Before I announce the winners, I'd like to list those that, while great, didn't make the cut.  You're all winners.  Really.  It's just that...

Ask a Smart Guy: Comparisons and Orcish Hordes

I really, really, really, really like Monsterpocalypse.

I mean, really.

Just wanted to be clear on that.

Also, my CREATE A TITLE FOR A SYFY ORIGINAL MOVIE contest is over.  I had a ton of great entries.  So many that I think I'll end up having a winner and two or three runner ups.  I'll be posting a list of all the titles as well as my choice for the lucky winners in a day or two.  So stay tuned.

But enough of that.  While striving to come up with an interesting topic for my latest blog post, I w...
