Wichita in October

In early October, I delivered the keynote address at the Kansas Association of the Teachers of English Conference. I have been outspoken about the relatively recent willful political attempt to strip-mine public schools and public libraries of funding in order to cultivate an uniformed constituency (see this Chicago Tribune article).
Here’s the damn deal: censorship is going on right this very minute, right before our very eyes. It’s not happening vis-à-vis high-profile, ALA banned book lists...

ROANOKE WRITERS CONFERENCE
Super excited to deliver the keynote address tomorrow at the Roanoke Writers Conference in Roanoke, Texas. I am also conducting two seminars, one on the lessons of creativity I learned from the great Ray Bradbury, the other on overcoming self-doubt as a writer.
Cannot wait! If you are in the area, I hope you will come out and say hello!

2018 STOKERCON
Pretty darned amped to announce that I will be a guest of honor at the StokerCon 2018 at the historic Biltmore Hotel in Providence, Rhode Island (Hometown of H.P. Lovecraft) next March 1-4. More details soon, but I hope to run a Bradbury creative writing workshop while I am there. Click on the link for full deets and registration info. Come out and hang with me. Looking forward to seeing lots of friends.

NEW SHORT STORY
I had a new short story published in Arcturus magazine a few months back and forgot to mention it here. This story will likely be in my forthcoming collection. At present there are 16 stories in this book, five of them are all-new, never before published. A couple are super-rare and ran in low-circulation print literary journals. Hopefully I'll have this all wrapped up by the end of this summer.

THE DIMENSIONS OF HOPE
A couple of weeks ago, I put together a pretty unique writers festival for a group of astounding and very deserving students at an alternative high school in Norman, Oklahoma. These kids have faced their share of trials and travails in life and are working hard to graduate and move forward. With the help of an amazing, tireless and visionary staff, we built something that, I believe, has never really been done before. I wrote about it for The Huffington Post.

WHEN WE WERE KINGS

The Huffington Post just published my review of my favorite album of 2016, When We Were Kings, by Scott Sorry. This is a scorchingly loud punk record, if that sort of thing suits you! You can pick the disk up on iTunes.

CITY OF ANGELS
This past May, I joined my old friend David Kipen, former Literary Director of the National Endowment for the Arts, for a discussion on Ray Bradbury and urbanism. This event was sponsored by the Los Angeles Office of Cultural Affairs and the NEA's "Big Read" initiative. Over the years, I have given many hundreds of presentations around the world, but this one was quite singular. The event was held at Clifton's Cafeteria in downtown Los Angeles. As a teenager, Ray Bradbury attended meetings of...

2016 Bram Stoker Award
Overjoyed to announce that the Shadow Show graphic novel won the 2016 Bram Stoker Award for “Super Achievement in a Graphic Novel.” Thank you to the Horror Writers Association for this honor! And congrats to my collaborators on the book, Mort Castle, Chris Ryall, Carlos Guzman and all the other artists and writers who truly made this book something special. This is my second Stoker Award!
