Parental approval for What Kills Me

“So my dad looked at the cover of What Kills Me and asked why are there butterflies exploding from her chest and not blood? I laughed. My dad likes hard-core action movies; naturally, he wants more blood.”

Alishia at Treasured Tales for Young Adults was kind enough to host me as a guest on her blog and I wrote about my mom and dad.

“There’s an idea: Vampire Smurfs!” Vampires.com interviews me about What Kills Me

“When I wrote the novel, I didn’t try to make my vampires extremely different — I didn’t give them tails or blue skin (ooh, there’s an idea: Vampire Smurfs!) — I wanted to create realistic characters and a fast-paced, thrilling plot.”

Click here read the rest of my interview with the wonderful people at Vampires.com.

Quote from What Kills Me: Meat on feet

“You humans crawl around the earth like insects, destroying the land. Do you think it matters if one of you gets crushed? You are food. I like to say you are nothing but ‘meat on feet.’” — Bad vampire to Zee

Reviews are in: “A definite must-read!”

Early reader reviews are in!

“It’s a refreshing take on the vampire lore that will have you laughing your socks off and emotionally invested in the heroine. The writing is splendid, the pacing is right on and the chemistry between the characters bring a tinge of realism to this fantastical world. A definite must-read and addition to your e-shelves.” – Review on Amazon.com

“I have never written a review before even though I have read and enjoyed loads of books. I liked this one so much I felt I had to tell people about it. I downloaded What Kills Me yesterday and I could not put it down. It was so easy to read and a definite page turner.

The way in which Wynne Channing wrote it made it very atmospheric resulting in the story being easy to visualize in my head… The characters are believable and well rounded and the motivation and behaviour makes sense unlike a lot of authors. The plot unfolded at a smooth and good pace.” – Review on Amazon.co.uk

Happy Birthday WKM!

The restaurant staff saw the cake and thought it was my birthday so they stuck candles in the sky and marched out in full song. So we all sang “Happy Birthday” to Wynne Channing and her book. I laughed my butt off.

Then when we ate the cake, the black icing stained all of our mouths so we looked like zombies. We took turns taking pictures of our grey teeth and purple lips. And I laughed some more.

Thanks everyone for making the launch of WKM such an event!

What Kills Me is available at Amazon (US), Amazon (UK) and Smashwords for $2.99.

The website is up and ready to go!

Before the book…there was the webpage.

My website is up and running. Liliana, who designed my book cover, also created the layout. It went through several incarnations (see below) but now it’s ready to be unleashed on the world. (Anyone building a website should look at other sites that they enjoy and try to use them as a guide.)

What ended up on the cutting room floor:

I loved the look of the landscape image so I asked Liliana to include Zee’s entire body as well as the stormy scene in the background.

I didn’t like the narrowness of this layout. I’ve also never used a pen that fancy in my life. Where can I get one of those?

Book is out in five days! Quote from What Kills Me: Talking too much

“You talk too much.”

“Maybe you talk too little.”

“You’re going to live forever. Pace yourself.”

Judging a book by its cover: Designing a front

I know people tell you not to do it; but I still do. I judge a book by its cover. And I expect others to do the same.

So to find the perfect cover for What Kills Me, I needed inspiration. I looked at other books. I looked at movie posters and album covers. I surfed Deviantart, an online community of artists. Then this image by Liliana Sanches Davis caught my eye:

It’s a CD cover that the Lisbon-based artist designed. I loved the movement, the drama, the starkness of the body against the stormy clouds. Much of Liliana’s work is dark, emotional, and surreal. So I asked her to create the face of my book.

The first draft that she came up with was beautiful but it did not fit the spirit of the story. (“Hey, every vampire in the world is trying to cut my head off but let me relax on this rock for a moment.”)

Liliana and I talked about Zee, about her struggles, about her journey. Liliana’s next version was very similar to the final one. I think she does a great job honouring the story.

What do you think?

For more of Liliana’s great work, visit her gallery at Deviantart.

The fight for survival begins…

Here’s a synopsis of the book:

An ancient prophecy warns of a girl destined to cause the extinction of the vampire race.

So when 17-year-old Axelia falls into a sacred well filled with blood and emerges a vampire, the immortal empire believes she is this legendary destroyer. Hunted by soldiers and mercenaries, Axelia and her reluctant ally, the vampire bladesmith Lucas, must battle to survive.

How will she convince the empire that she is just an innocent teenager-turned bloodsucker and not a creature of destruction? And if she cannot, can a vampire who is afraid of bugs summon the courage to fight a nation of immortals?

The ebook will be available in June.
