The Great Leap Year Giveaway!
Two more days of this one of a kind giveaway! Here is my message from email and my Facebook blog... there's still time to get your photo in with my new book, The Technologists!
-----
For the first time, I'm doing a giveaway FOR EIGHT DAYS ONLY open to everyone, including all those who cannot come to my events. And "winning" is easy. Just take a photo of yourself with a copy of my brand new novel THE TECHNOLOGISTS between now and the end of leap day, February 29 and post it on my Facebook author page, tweet the pic to my Twitter account (@MatthewPearl), or email it to me at mpearl [at] matthewpearl.com with the subject "Tech Pic" with your mailing address and the name to whom you would like the page personalized (I do need to ask that I personalize to you or any other name of your choice). No purchase is necessary, it can be a photo with the book at your local library, or at the bookstore, or at a friend's house--be creative, I just thought it would be a fun way to get the word out and to give back a bit to some of my readers! So get out there right now, find the book, take a picture! (I think the e-reader screen would show up on a photo, but let me know if you have any problems!)
There's more! (Yes, I'm really getting into this). The first FOUR readers to post or send their pictures will receive one manuscript page from each of my four novels! Alternatively, if you manage to take a photo with all FOUR of my novels, you will also receive one manuscript from each of my four novels. What are you waiting for?

The Technologists Launch!
Dear friends,
Publication day! Today THE TECHNOLOGISTS, my fourth novel is officially on sale. Please consider showing the booksellers your enthusiasm for the book by ringing one up at your local store or your favorite online site as soon as you can!
THE TECHNOLOGISTS is a thriller about the very first class at M.I.T. at a time when the idea of teaching science and technology was considered downright dangerous. When a series of scientific disasters spreads through Boston, a small group of students from the class of 1868 must come together to uncover the source of the menace. Harvard, meanwhile, looks to use the public fear to crush its rival. Included among the characters is Ellen Swallow, the very first female student at M.I.T. who is hidden away from the public like a "dangerous animal" (her real words!). Lots more including my first ever book "trailer" at www.MATTHEWPEARL.com!
The book will be launched with a reading tonight (2/21) at the MIT Museum at 6:00pm. I hope all you Boston-area folks will come to this kick-off--if you haven't been to the museum, it's a blast. Wednesday I will be in Concord, New Hampshire at Gibson's Bookstore (7:00pm) and Thursday back in Cambridge at Porter Square Books (7:00pm), then Sandwich Public Library in Cape Cod on Saturday (2:00pm). See the events post for more. I can't wait to see some of you along the way. If you haven't signed up for my email newsletter, that's another way I can let you know when I have an event in your area (http://www.matthewpearl.com/newslette...).
And don't forget my Great Leap Year Giveaway!
Finally, I'm thrilled to report that Library Journal calls THE TECHNOLOGISTS "faultless," Kirkus Reviews says it's "delightful" and the Sunday Times of London writes "Pearl takes an unusual subject for a thriller and seamlessly weaves historical research and his own inventions into a satisfying story." I'm really excited to share the book with you. Please forward this email to anyone you think might be interested and any book club members looking for a new pick.
Yours sincerely,
Matthew

Two new things
Hi all! I have two things to share with you today that I wrote. Lots and lots more to come in time for the publication day of The Technologists tomorrow!
First, I have a short story called "The Lady in the Basement" about the first female student at MIT as she hatches a plan of revenge against a student harrassing her. Ellen Swallow is one of the characters featured in The Technologists. The story will be serialized each day this week starting today at FiveChapters.com ... As the name suggests, the site serializes a new short story each week! Check it out! (And if you missed it, there was more on Ellen and friends at my earlier post, Meet the Technologists.)
Next up, I have a guest post called "Is A Writer's Life Lonely?" at the Beyond the Margins blog, a site about writing and publishing also worthy of a bookmark in your browser. Find my post here. The post isn't as depressing as it sounds, I promise!
What else is upcoming on the agenda?
...a list of book events for my tour
...details about the giveaway contest I'm holding that starts tomorrow!
...the publication day announcement
...a post about giving The Technologists its title
...a post about giving The Technologists its cover
As always, in addition to being in touch through Goodreads, I hope you'll "like" my Facebook author page and consider signing up for my email list.

Technologists website and The Professor's Assassin
The website is now up for The Technologists! Please visit when you have a chance:
The Technologists Official Website
The site for the novel has a bit of a different look and feel than the sites for my other novels, and I hope you'll enjoy it. Remember, the novel will be out February 21, 2012.
More news! As you'll see on the new website, "The Professor's Assassin" is now available for download as of today! This is an e-original prequel to The Technologists that I hope you'll consider reading.
In The Technologists, you'll meet William Barton Rogers, the determined visionary founder and president of M.I.T., as the class of 1868 prepares for the college's first graduation. In my shorter novella, "The Professor's Assassin," we find Rogers many years earlier, as a professor in his 30s at the University of Virginia, at a time when that and other Southern colleges are plagued with violence and riots. Rogers must confront an unexpected turn in his life when the dean of the college, his friend, is shot down in cold blood by a student--a real life murder case filled with twists and drama. As events unfold, we discover where Rogers receives some of his early inspiration for the creation of a new type of college.
Please download "The Professor's Assassin" today! Here is a page with links to download the prequel from your choice of sites. Hope you enjoy! The Technologists

Book Trailer for The Technologists
Introducing *The Technologists* book trailer! What's a book trailer? It's a recent trend in publishing in getting the word out about a new book. This is my first one, and I'm really excited to share it with you. Have your audio on to listen to the great accompanying music, too. I'll post a "behind the trailer" note soon to describe the process and cheer its talented creator, Jessi Esparza. Even sooner I should be able to direct you to our new website devoted to The Technologists, all in anticipation of the novel's publication on February 21, 2012.
Oh, and if you're at all inclined please Share this on Facebook, Twitter, or pass it along to anyone you think might be interested!

Jekyll and Hyde Discussion Tonight! in Newton
Newtonville Books has what they call "Celebrity Book Club" where a local author leads a discussion of a book written by someone else, often a classic. I've chosen "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" by Robert Louis Stevenson in time for Halloween week. It's a good excuse to read, or reread, a classic, fun (short!) novel that's had a huge impact both on literature and pop culture. Jekylls and Hydes are welcome!

Advance Buzz for The Technologists!
I'm honored to share two quotes of praise from fellow authors for The Technologists in advance of its publication in February. Especially from two authors I admire so much!

demands to be solved. Matthew Pearl is one of my must-read authors. He never fails to intrigue and thrill!”
—Tess Gerritsen, New York Times bestselling author of The Silent Girl
