Mews and Nips: Artist’s Career Got Started by Painting Cats on Her Daughter’s Sandwich Bags
An artist who only identifies herself as Erika started decorating her daughter’s sandwich bags last year. At first, they were just doodles, eventually, she started painting full portraits, including cat portraits. Over the summer, when she didn’t have to pack lunches, she started painting on Duralar, a plastic sheet designed for art. Her paintings of The Sandwich Cats now hang in a gallery. She also does custom paintings. For more about The Sandwich Cats, visit BoredPanda.com or Instagram.

Gwen Cooper’sCurl Up with a Cat Taleseries features humorous and heartwarming short stories about the ongoing adventures of Gwen’s feline family. I find myself falling a little bit more in love with Gwen’s cats with each story. Last month’s installment is a little different: it’s an excerpt from the new Homer’s Odyssey 10th Anniversary Scrapbook.
Titled Rhoda Parmenter, this is the story of Gwen’s friendship with an extraordinary animal rescuer. This...

Giveaway: 2020 Conscious Cat Wall Calendar
I have one2020 Conscious Cat Wall Calendar left in my personal inventory, and I’m going to give it away to one lucky reader. To my knowledge, this is still the only calendar on the market that exclusively features tortoiseshell cats.
I always have this calendar hanging in a prominent spot over my desk. This year, it will be a bittersweet reminder of my precious Ruby. Ruby is January’s girl, and I’d be lying if I said hanging the calendar on Wednesday didn’t unleash a whole new wave of...

Have a Safe and Happy New Year’s Eve
I’m not much of party girl, so New Year’s Eve has always been a quiet day of reflection for me. I look back over the past year, and set some intentions for the coming year.
Looking back over 2019 will be bittersweet. Up until September, it was a very good year for Allegra, Ruby and me. Then, of course, everything changed when Ruby got sick. As a result, I’m having a hard time letting go of this year – after all, it was the last year Ruby was with me in physical form.
My grief is too fresh...

Last Friday, I featured myTop 5 Cat Books of 2019, and today, I’m announcing my pick for Best Cat Book of 2018.

A Heartfelt Thank You to All of You
The words “thank you” feel like the two most inadequate words in the English language right now. As a writer, I’m supposed to have the perfect words for every occasion, but right now, words fail me to express my deep appreciation and gratitude for the outpouring of love and support I have received from all of you after I announced Ruby’s passing.
There were more than a thousand comments here on The Conscious Cat, on Facebook, and on Instagram, and they’re still coming in. Some of you sent...

Mews and Nips: Between the Years
The week between the years has always been my favorite week of the year. The pace of life seems to slow down just a little bit, most people still retain some of the magic of Christmas, and it’s a perfect time for reflection.
This year, I’m having a hard time finding the kind of peace I usually experience this time of the year as I’m struggling to cope with losing Ruby. For that reason, today’s Mews and Nips edition is an abbreviated version.
I encourage you to take some time for reflection...

I don’t keep track of the number of books I read each year, but my best guess is somewhere between 150 and 200, and at least half of them have something to do with cats.I review books here on The Conscious Cat on a regular basis .
I made a commitment to myself long ago that I would never post a bad book review. I feel that every author pours his or her heart and soul into a book, and just because I don’t like a book doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not a...
