tortoiseshell_cat_by_window

Even though Ruby has been gone more than two years after being diagnosed with advanced kidney disease, I still miss my little girl so much, it actually feels like a physical ache sometimes. I’m grateful I have eight years of Ruby’s Reflections on this site to comfort me and remind me of some of the cute things she did when the pain hits, and I love sharing the memories with you.

Today’s memory goes back to April of 2012. Ruby had been with us for about a year when she decided she was going to ...

Mews and Nips: Cats May Protect Their Humans From Memory Loss in Later Life

cat-light-shadow

We know cats are good for our health. Studies have shown sharing your life with cats can lower your risk of heart attack, petting a cat can lower your blood pressure, and cats can reduce stress, anxiety and depression. A recent preliminary study has shown that owning a cat (or dog) may be linked to slower cognitive decline in older adults. For more about the study, visit the Good News Network.

What Does It Mean If Your Cat’s Eyes Change Color?

cat-eye-color

It is said that the eyes are the window to the soul, and I think that’s especially true when it comes to the beautiful eyes of our feline friends. But did you know that your cat’s eyes can also be a window to her health? Changes in a cat’s eye color can be an indicator of a potentially serious health problem.

Normal cat eye color

Normal cat eyes cover a range of different colors. The majority of kittens are born with blue eyes. Between the age of three to eight weeks, kittens’ eyes begin to ch...

This giveaway is sponsored by Darwin’s Natural Pet Products*

Embraced for decades by holistically oriented pet parents and holistic veterinarians, raw feeding is becoming more and more mainstream as cat parents look for alternatives to feeding highly processed commercial pet foods. Allegra and the Tuna Salad Seal

Allegra-plastic-seal-play

Hi everyone, it’s Allegra! You know by now that I LOVE crinkly plastic seals. Whenever I hear mom open a jar or other container that has one of those seals, I come running into the kitchen! It doesn’t matter where in the house I may have been, or whether I was fast asleep, because to me, that sound is just simply irresistible!

Mom lets me play with the seals for a little while, but she always takes them away from me as soon as I start chewing on them. I know she just wants to keep me safe, but...

10 Subtle Signs Your Cat May Be Sick

cat-sick-signs

Cats are masters at hiding signs of illness. This is a throwback to their wild origins: in the wild, a sick animal easily becomes prey. Because of this, it’s up to cat parents to know what to look for. Any changes in your cat’s normal routine, behavior and attitude could be the first indicator that something is wrong.

Cat parents often don’t realize that problems can develop slowly and cats don’t show symptoms until a disease is already advanced. Early detection is important: there’s a much be...
