“Meditation turns from its purgatory role to recognize in self-knowledge and in the mind's images of the external world the general essences in which all things have their being.”
R.W. Southern, Saint Anselm: A Portrait in a Landscape

“Of all the great forces which have formed the past, none has disappeared more effectively, or when recalled retains less of its once compelling force, than the power of the spoken word.”
R.W. Southern

“     I was led by the spirit of ambition and immersed myself entirely in the waves of the world. I put God, the Church and my Order behind me and set myself to gather what riches I could, rather than to take what God sent. Forgetting those things which were behind, I reached forth (but not as the Apostle did) to those things which were before. (Phil. iii, 13) … Ambition made me drunk, and the flattering promises of our Prince overthrew me.”
R.W. Southern, The Making of the Middle Ages
