Choosing A Theme for Your Author Blog

[image error]I’ve made a few assumptions in the title there.

First, that you’re an author. If you’re not, this still applies.

Second, that you have a blog. Again, this post is still relevant.

Third, that you’re using WordPress or another popular platform as a CMS (content-management system). Yup, you guessed it — this post is for you.

But I had to begenerally specific so the title didn’t sound like this:

Choosing A Pre-Designed Template for One’s Website’s Blog, If Said One Has A Blog. Or If Not, Their Website...

The Most Specific Generic Self-Publishing Advice I’ll Ever Give You

[image error]I spent the week thinking about what I would write about for thenextfew weeks. I’d asked not too long ago what you would like to read about as well.

Since I’m getting close to “officially” launching Turtleshell Pressand due to the interest you’ve all mentioned (thanks!), I thought this would be a great “kickoff” post:

Specific Self-Publishing Advice

When I say “self-publishing,” I mean DIY-ing your book from concept to sale, and everything in-between. And when I say “specific,” I’m talking about...

The Minimalist Guide to Social Media

The Minimalist Guide to Social Media

Note from Nick: This is a guest post (actually, it should be called afriendpost) from my friend, Toni, over at Duolit (SelfPublishingTeam.com). If you haven’t heard of them, check them out and see what they’re all about (and then come back here!).

Enter Toni:

Social media can be a huge time suck.

When I first discovered Facebook (in September of 2004 – thanks, Timeline), my roommates barged into my bedroom a day later to make sure I was still alive!

It makes me feel better, how...

You Win Some, You Lose Some

[image error]Eh.

That was the best word I could think of to describe the way I was feeling.

It was a few nights ago, and I was about to go to bed, but I checked email one more time.

And there it was.

The email I’d been waiting for.

My first “hate mail.”

Truthfully, it wasn’t “hateful” as much as just shortsighted and rather trivial, but it was a far cry from the positive emails I usually get.

Now, I’ve gotten poor reviews(which were totally justified, by the way), unsubscribes, and dissenting views in the commen...

The Greatest Lifehack of All Time

Note from Nick: I’ve been not-so-patiently awaiting the launch of Loren Wade’s blog, Unlifer (it’s today, so go check it out!). If you haven’t heard of him yet, you will. He’s an awesome guy and I’m honored to be a part of his launch team!

Lifehacking is commonly defined as, “making one’s daily life more efficient”.

There is one reoccurring theme in life; one that governs our minds, our hearts, and our souls. It’s commonly overlooked, undervalued, and many times viewed as c...

What Should We Do Next?

What Should We Do Next?Since I’ve been posting less frequently these days (something I’d like to change), I’ve had some extra time to think about the “next best thing” for the blog and the company. I mean “next best” to mean the “next awesome thing,” not the “second best thing” — semantic, maybe, but huge for me.

Basically, I’ve been struggling with the idea of running a blog in addition to running an author-services firm, and what that means for management (time, resources, etc.), quality (how much can one guy/one...

Confessions of an English Tutor: The Two Writing Errors EVERYBODY Makes

Note from Nick: Today’s post is a whopper — It’s a guest post from Jessica Ruane, and it’s a really helpful post if you’re interested in grammar, sentence structure, and the nuts and bolts of writing (and you should be!). Let us know in the comments what you think of this, and if we should continue posting some more content like this!

Confessions of an English Tutor: The Two Writing Errors EVERYBODY MakesI was an English tutor at a community college for many years. The school I worked at was the most culturally diverse campus in southern California, and I can hon...

How to Find the Perfect Niche Audience for Your Blog

When I first started blogging, I didn’t have a clue… about anything.

I still don’t have a clue about a lot of things, but thankfully blogging isn’t one of them! However, I’m not sure I’ve ever come across a post or book or anything thatreally went into the nuts and bolts of finding and choosing the perfect niche market.

There have been a few helpful posts that say things like, “pick a few target keywords” or “think about whatyouwould want to read…” and I’ve even regurgitated the same informatio...

Introducing: Turtleshell Press

It’s almost ready, but I wanted to announce it to you before I sent it out into the world.

For the last few months, I’ve been working on launching what I’m calling an “author services firm.” Basically, we want to help authors, writers, and creators get their ideas into the world, helping them through things like cover design, editing, and marketing, all while giving them the full control and guidance self-pubbed authors want.

We won’t take royalties from anything we publish, and our prices will...
