2 New Agents Seeking LGBTQ+ stories, memoir and essay collections, speculative fiction, New Age practices and more

Here are two new agents actively seeking clients. New agents are a boon to writers. They are actively building their lists, and will go the extra mile for their clients.

Andrew Dugan is open to queries with particular interest in LGBTQ+ stories, gothic fiction, stories with a rich sense of humor, and literary fiction with a compelling hook. On the nonfiction end, he has a love for language-driven memoir and essay collections. He’s also seeking narrative nonfiction that has strong elements of social justice and is interested in popular science. Andrew is also looking for practical and narrative projects in the spirituality space, with a focus on tarot, witchcraft, and New Age practices. Andrew wants to see more novels in vignettes.

Zoe Aline Howard is looking for for voice-driven stories that subvert reader expectations of their subject matter. She is especially interested in off-putting and unashamed characters, women breaking social expectations, LBGTQ+ characters, grounded magical realism and speculative elements, and insular settings (small towns, amusement parks, summer camps). In adult nonfiction, Zoe looks for narrative nonfiction, memoir, and essay collections that blend personal narratives with research.

Always check the agency website and agent bio before submitting. Agents can switch agencies or close their lists, and submission requirements can change.

NOTEDon't submit to two agents at the same agency simultaneously. If one rejects you, you may then submit to another.

You can find a full list of agents actively seeking new clients here: Agents Seeking Clients
__________________________ PictureMr. Andrew Dugan of Dystel Goderich & Bourret LLC

Andrew Dugan joined DG&B in 2020 as an assistant in business accounting and subsidiary rights. Originally from the Philadelphia suburbs, he completed his B.A. in English at Drew University with coursework in Arabic and International Relations. After interning in magazines and attending the Columbia Publishing Course’s inaugural virtual session, he was fascinated by the symbiotic relationship between agent and author.

What he is seeking: Andrew is open to queries with particular interest in LGBTQ+ stories, gothic fiction, stories with a rich sense of humor, and literary fiction with a compelling hook.

How to submit: Send query to adugan@dystel.com

__________________________ Picture Ms. Zoe Aline Howard of Howland Literary

After working with Howland Literary and Lookout Books while earning her BFA in Creative Writing and Certificate in Publishing from the University of North Carolina Wilmington, Zoe Howard is now building her own list of adult literary fiction and adult nonfiction. Zoe is also a literary publicist at Pine State Publicity.

What she is seeking: Zoe would love to read writing that explores boundaries: poets writing prose, region-specific writing about the coastal or “convenience store” south and the western United States, non-traditional narrators, unhinged women in fiction, and so on.

In adult fiction, she looks for voice-driven stories that subvert reader expectations of their subject matter.

Her niche interests include internet culture, celebrities, pop culture, religion/spirituality, para-social relationships, material culture, and the relationships between people and the places they inhabit.

Luna Press

Speculative fiction novels. Theme: Horror/gothic/folk horror, dark fantasy novel set in a haunted location (by 'location' we mean a dwelling, an institution, a hotel, a factory, a ship/ferry, a train -  in short a building/structure where people have lived, worked, died, grew up, etc.)

What are we looking for: A location with character and characters with a strong development. Think of The Haunting of Hill House, by Shirley Jackson and the Flanagan's adaptation; think The Shining by Stephen King; Hell House by Matheson, to name but a few: in these stories the respective buildings have a very strong presence, but the characters and their relationships with each other and with the building itself (and its history) are an essential driving force to the success of the whole: flawed as they may be, readers can relate to them in a way or another.

Audience: General Trade (No Children/YA/Teen).

When to submit: On the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of July 2022 only.

Mr. Tom Killingbeck of A.M. Heath & Co. Ltd (UK)

I joined AM Heath as a literary agent in 2022. Previously I was an editorial director at Penguin and HarperCollins, where I worked with an eclectic group of authors including Dame Jane Goodall, John Preston, Bella Mackie, Isabel Hardman, Sarah Langford, Ed Caesar, Adam Higginbotham, Kathleen Hanna, Bimini Bon Boulash and The Modern House. I also helped to launch the 4thWrite Prize. As an agent with over a decade of experience as an editor, I relish working closely and creatively with academics who want to reach the broadest possible readership for their writing, and journalists and memoirists with the storytelling abilities of the best novelists.

What he is seeking; I specialise in nonfiction, seeking fresh, expert perspectives on history, science, nature, politics, current affairs, travel, business and health. I am always keen to find pioneering or definitive narratives in the arts and pop culture, especially music. I am particularly interested in writers who can open readers’ minds and help them see the world differently, through untold histories, ground-breaking science, or revelatory journalism. But equally, I love books that are simply a pleasure to read, be they a hilariously gossipy memoir or a gripping true crime investigation.

Ms. Victoria Dillman of Howland Literary

Before Howland Literary, Victoria Dillman was an assistant and foreign rights associate at Sobel Weber Associates and an intern at Linda Leith Publishing, as well as a reader for the Community of Literary Magazines and Presses (CLMP) Awards. She holds a B.A. in English from McGill University, and an MFA in Fiction from The New School. Her pronouns are she/her.

What she is seeking: Victoria is most interested in adult literary/upmarket fiction and narrative and expert-driven nonfiction. She would particularly like to hear from underrepresented communities including neurodivergent, queer, and BIPOC voices.

In fiction, she looks for a well-paced plot with a strong, distinctive voice. She is fascinated by complex and nuanced characters with conflicting desires. She especially loves literary fiction with a speculative or magical element. She is also intrigued by hybrids of literary-genre fiction: pieces that work to subvert genre conventions. She will always be captured by family relationships, particularly the complexities of sibling dynamics and intergenerational trauma. As someone who grew up internationally, Victoria is drawn to narratives exploring transitory homes and cultures.

In nonfiction, she is looking for projects that have a passion for and in-depth knowledge of niche topics. She is drawn to narratives that focus on the individual and offer fresh perspectives on our world. Some of the topics she is interested include social justice, climate change, mental health, cults, true crime, and counterculture.

3 Established Literary Agents Seeking Genre Fiction, Narrative Nonfiction, Kidlit, Literary Fiction, Humor and more

Picture Alex Rice
Here are three literary agents actively seeking clients. All work with established agencies with good track records.
Sarah Khalil is seeking serious narrative nonfiction with an eye towards social, economic and environmental justice; pop/cultural criticism and histories; cross-cultural narratives; and writing from Caribbean, MENA, and Muslim creators; all deeply explored by experts—academics, journalists, and those with lived experiences and something important to say about them. Big ideas, radical thought, and propulsive writing are the cornerstones of her taste.

Alex Rice is especially drawn to stories in adult fiction that explore one’s identity and sense of self, family sagas, female friendship, and a fresh start on life. Alex is fond of storylines that fundamentally challenge the protagonist in some facet of life, pushing them to question their views on morality and purpose. She’ll also consider select genre books in romance, mysteries, and some thrillers when looking for a more escapist read. In the children’s realm, Alex looks for stories with a fast-paced plot that still delivers a poignant message.

Anthony Mattero accepts non-fiction submissions in the categories of pop-culture, humor, music, sports, and pop-business. In fiction he’s looking for submissions that blend the elusive literary/commercial line, but with a plot that doesn’t let you go. Of particular interest are novels highlighting history, underrepresented communities, and under-told points of view, as well as psychological thrillers and humorous critiques on modern society.

Always check the agency website and agent bio before submitting. Agents can switch agencies or close their lists, and submission requirements can change.

NOTEDon't submit to two agents at the same agency simultaneously. If one rejects you, you may then submit to another.

Ms. Sarah Khalil of Kneerim & Williams

Sarah Khalil joined the agency in 2018 while pursuing her master’s degree in Publishing & Writing at Emerson College. Prior to that, she worked for several years in trade publishing and legal environments in Boston and Beirut, Lebanon, where she graduated with High Distinction from the American University of Beirut with a B.A. in English Literature and a minor in History. In Boston, she has worked at Beacon Press and the IP law firm Sennott, Williams & Rogers.

What she is seeking: She is seeking serious narrative nonfiction with an eye towards social, economic and environmental justice; pop/cultural criticism and histories; cross-cultural narratives; and writing from Caribbean, MENA, and Muslim creators; all deeply explored by experts—academics, journalists, and those with lived experiences and something important to say about them. Big ideas, radical thought, and propulsive writing are the cornerstones of her taste.

How to submit: Please send a polished query letter to submissions@kwlit.com, and include a synopsis, a brief biography, and ideally ten to twenty pages of initial sample material in the body of the email Address your letter to Sarah Khalil.

Alex Rice of Creative Artists Agency

Alex Rice graduated from Miami University Ohio with a degree in English Literature. She began her publishing career at Foundry Literary + Media before joining CAA in April 2018. She is based in the New York office and works across all departments to create publishing opportunities for the agency’s clients, with a focus on women’s and commercial fiction, pop culture and criticism, and young adult and middle grade across all genres.

What she is seeking: With an eye towards a more commercial, upmarket audience, Alex is especially drawn to stories in adult fiction that explore one’s identity and sense of self, family sagas, female friendship, and a fresh start on life. She’s drawn to characters with a strong sense of self that are then challenged in that belief. She tends towards compelling, voice-driven narratives and is always looking for new and diverse stories through which we see the world differently. She’s not afraid of the dark and loves an edgy, twisted narrative as well.

The Conference Activities page details each activity you can register for: select them all, only one, or some number in between–it’s entirely up to you, so you can craft the conference experience that will be best for your growth, interests, and budget. We’ll discuss your publishing opportunities today, how to write queries & pitches, how to market yourself and your books, what makes an agent/editor stop reading your manuscript, and more. No matter what you’re writing — fiction or nonfiction — the day’s classes will help point you in the right direction. Writers of all genres are welcome. “You Really Got a Hold on Me”: A Generative Pop Culture Poetry Workshop. May 11th, 6:00-7:30PM EST. "The Sopranos brought about a generation filled with fans who found themselves inexplicably drawn to Tony Soprano’s heavy breathing and violent leadership. Fans of the show Killing Eve are consistently torn between troubled MI5 officer Eve Polastri and the object of her detection, the dastardly but captivating Villanelle. What is it about these characters that compels us to talk about them, to think about them, and to write about them? In looking outward to these characters, we look inward. In this 90-minute generative poetry workshop, you’ll drill down on a character from popular culture who fascinates you in some way. You’ll look at examples of pop culture poetry from writers including Morgan Parker, and Hanif Abdurraquib, and with two short writing periods, you’ll begin drafting work, and even share a line or two. Come along, make sense of your interior life and get an excuse to re-binge your favorite show." While there is no fee for this workshop, those who are able and appreciative can make direct donations via Venmo @helloshanwolf.
