Taking a girl up the Hilton

When is it permissible, when is it allowed? To take her up the Hilton, I want to do her proud,But could it be too much too soon, I don't wanna peakWhat if she really likes it and demands it every week,
I'll have to try and work out a way to get her in position,Coz taking her up the Hilton is a tricky proposition, I know that if we do it she would scream inwardly with delight,But if she's never been up there before it might give her a fright.

She might take it for granted or think that I'm too flash,

Coz taking a girl up the Hilton, requires a lot of thought,Especially when officially we haven't started to court,I know deep down they all like it, they just don't like to say,But get the timing wrong and there's a consequence to pay.
It's a thing established couples do, too much for a first date,She'll think I do it with every girl and her like could turn to hate,It's something you build up to; get to know each other first,Up the Hilton with a stranger could end up being the worst.
I don't want her to think that I have become obsessed,Or don't want to do the normal things or that I am pest,I'm not trying to impress her because it was good before,I just know that she would love it and that's my only flaw.
I'll mention it in passing, after a few drinks,Then look for a reaction, shock or seductive winks,To try and gauge if it's something she would be willing to do,And if she doesn't want to, I'll say... I didn't want to too.
It's a gamble asking any girl, she might think less of me,For trying too hard on our first date but I love Cloud 23,I love the view and service and how the city lights all dance,The champagne and the couple's seats all add to the romance.

In fact that's it my mind's made up, we're going in that lift,And if it ends up nowhere or finishes in a rift,Then nothing ventured nothing gained, for a while I will be skint,But if we end up getting married I want our first date to be mint.

That Burnage boy's a legend

He convinced the world to sing along in pure Mancunian,Putting Manchester on the map as much as anyone,A working class Manc hero, focussed on his goals,Manc accent and Manc attitude, it's the way he rock n rolls.
His words stir pure emotion, his rifts and melodies rule,No matter what he's doing he epitomises cool,He's the very personification of everything that's Manc,A musical inspiration, for his Manc soul we should thank.
He gave us Morning Glory and packed out Wem-ber-ley,He told us we should Talk Tonight, I thought Definitely Maybe,His songs would Live Forever; they loved 'em Round Our Way,And Like a Force of Nature he'd Never Fade Away.
Known All Around The World, and Half the World Away,He Rolled With It not caring whatever Some Might Say,Right from the beginning he had a Masterplan,And now he's in his forties, It's Getting Better Man.
He never looked Back in Anger, even Hung In A Bad Place, From Wonderwall to Bag It Up, his tunes were f'@ckin' ace,He Put his Money Where his Mouth Is and sang about hisMagic PieAnd now that he''s gone solo, his birds are flying high.
Noel Gallagher is a genius; in fact he is a God,And every time I hear him speak, agreement makes me nod,Unless he's talking football and then he's just a blue,And excels in speaking nonsense, like all those berties do.

POEM: Badly fitting Farah's
Badly fitting Farah's
Those lightly chequered Farah's; they really have to go,The seventies are long gone; it's clearly time to show,
An eye for building fashion; a new age, dynamic streak,And an Arndale tower for Manchester that matches Market Street,
For nestling quite obscurely in the modern Manchester sky,Stands an architectural relic from an era that's gone by,
When curly roofs kept us dry outside M&S,And smoke-filled bus stations wreaked havoc with our chest,
When shady underground jean stalls were the place to shop,And huge sloping ramps on Cannon Street led to car parks up on top,
When cars could motor freely... right up Market Street,They even had a go back then that the Arndale din't look neat,
So why can't the Arndale tower blend in, in silver or in grey? Can someone take those Farah's off and please throw them away?
It looks like the investment ...was ready for a while,Market Street's resplendent with its aesthetic grey retile,
The Food Court and indoor market they got the facelift too,It's just with Arndale tower they didn't quite know what to do,
Of course it should stay standing, it's part of our city scene,Just finish off the tiling work, the whole city is keen,
To see a better tower, I know that times are tough,But our Arndale's dated collar should at least match with its cuff.

POEM: Different kinds of drizzle

If you hail from Manchester, you're an expert soaked wet through,If you've reigned at all in this city, no one feels it more than you,If you've showered in our glory; then its' soaked into your brain,Coz, there ain't no folk more clued up when it comes to rain.
There's rain that spits like Peter Kay's but soaks you to the bone,A fine and near invisible sheet that engulfs your whole route home,It wraps itself around you, though you never see it fall,And though it is the finest, it's the wettest rain of all.
If you're out in it for too long and this may make you laugh,This rain wrinkles your fingers like they're soaking in the bath,Your toes and face will wrinkle too, making folk look funny,But put all your notes into a bag or its papier-mâché money.
Then there are the raindrops the size of dogs and cats,Just one drop will drench you, as against your head it splats,Just one hit's enough... to knock you from your stance,Umbrella's don't protect folk, when these heavy raindrops dance.
Never try to catch this rain playfully on your tongue,Coz in this town folk have drowned when they've got this wrong,Imagine a grand piano falling quickly from the skies,One drop will take your head off if it hits you in your eyes.
Though heavy rain is funny, I warn you never dare,To laugh at any female with the flattest of flopped hair,As just one drop is nuclear; a follicular mishap,And just one smirk's disastrous, only ending in a slap.
Next is rain that bounces up; it likes to ricochet,Attacking from all angles, you can't keep it at bay,Then there's rain that don't fall down but likes to fall across,Driving rain and blinding rain, the sort that gets folks lost.
I swear this rain is heat seeking, you won't escape it if you try,It's trained to land at face height and drench you in the eye,It's learned to curve round corners and chase folk as they stride,It's learned to almost levitate, turning gravity on its side.
Then there's rain that flutters down and masquerades as snow,It slithers down your hood and neck, there's no place it won't go,It's trained to travel under skirts and up some ladies' frocks,It's learned to slither up your legs and drip into your socks.
There's rain that piggybacks the wind and slaps you in the face,There's acid rain that stings your eyes, I swear it's laced with mace,There's rain that's learned as it lands to quickly start to huddle,So passersby fail to see and run straight through a puddle.
There's clever rain that waits to see what folk are putting on,Like the sudden summer downpour after the sun has shone,Then there is endurance rain that lasts day after day,It forces us to go out in it... in case it never goes away.
There's ice cold rain straight from the fridge making us all chilly,Tickly rain that tickles us and prickles us so silly,Rain that runs right down our necks sending icy shivers,Rain that turns our roads and streets into cascading rivers.
Not forgetting the deluge rain, like the shower has come on,By the time you get your brollie out the deluge has completely gone. There's rain that is so focussed aiming for the base of your jeans,Rain that makes us dance, as we try to run or least it seems.
There's rain that forces us to sprint our personal best,As we feebly try to stay dry in the clothes that we are dressed,Then there is the naughty rain that makes tops go see through,And that constantly trickling rain that makes folks need the loo.
All kinds of rain fall in Manchester; it makes us groan and grizzle,But I think you'll find we're all experts in every kind of drizzle,That's nowt to do, if you're soaked wet through, except hope one day to find,That a rain expert from Manchester ... has cleaned up on Mastermind.

POEM: Postcode wars

Postcode wars

I see you've put your posters up, 'Welcome to Manchester,'And if you say it loud enough, rumour might begin to fester,Someone might believe you; they might even take the bait,But is this just blue banter or blind, neurotic hate?
So United aren't from Manchester? You know that's hard to fake,Coz moveable council postcodes don't a Mancunian make,And coming from a marketing team whose three stars are pretend,Stop preaching your geography and take history my friend.
Coz we were born in Newton Heath back in Seventy Eight,Then soon we moved to Clayton where we became a great,United played at Bank Street, M11, that's Manchester mate,And it wasn't til our thirties that we chose to re-locate.

But where you do you come from means where were you born?Where did you grow up, where did you learn?Once you've moved when you're thirty two,Your postcode then doesn't redefine you!

If we play by your system then none of these are,Parts of Manchester by YOUR self-defined law,So you're all telling porkies by claiming to be,The only football team born in our fine city.

And Noel, he left Manchester before thirty two,And yet he's still a Manc and a bit of a blue,But he's not a cockney just because he left town,You can't have it both ways, it just ain't aloud.
But who were you kidding? Who did you fool?Did anyone buy into your postcode rule?In my eyes there really is just one way to rank,An M in your postcode makes you a Manc.
Semantics and history, now time for the math,And a point so pedantic it might well make you laugh,

The difference between Wastelands and OT is just that,And our Ryan could run that in ten seconds flat! From the town hall that's the difference, as the Manc crow flies,But please... don't let that hamper your marketing lies.
Don't let that restrict you or the posters you put up,Coz all over the world they toasts us, as we lift another cup,They refer to us as Manchester, Manchester's number one brand,And so you see your posters... are printed in blue dreamland.
So travel the world like I do and put this to the test,Mention Manchester to anyone, they'll say United next,'But the postcodes,' you argue, 'they play in Trafford you fool,' But no one's ever listened to your silly postcode rule.

We sell out every week and fill all the bars,We don't need to debate if this city is ours,Coz everyone knows in this city, it's true,Manchester's red with the odd bit of blue.

Manchester, Salford, Tameside, Trafford too,Can you really claim any of these areas are blue?I think deep down blue marketeers already know,So there's no point debating Manc's fan ratio.
So accept us we're here and we outnumber you,Face facts or lie, there's nowt else you can do,We accept that you're here... born blue and bred,So you should accept that Mancunia's red!

POEM: Mancunian way

Mancunian way

We'venever been a city to stand back, give up or groan,We'venever needed vigils or a soapbox on which to moan,
If thingsain't right we'll fix it, no matter what they say,Job's agood un, sorted, safe, is the Mancunian Way,
Maybe youdon't believe me, and think that I am blagger,

I don'tjust mean the attitude, I woun't form it on that basis,I don'tjust mean the walk 'n' talk of Stone Roses or Oasis,
I don'tjust mean this feeling that Greater Manc is best,Coz everybodyloves their town if you put that to the test,
But there'scertain times in history that really do define,The peopleof this fine city that I class as mine,

It'swritten in the history books, way back two centuries when,Our cottontrade was suffering until we made 'em think again,
We'dblossomed as producers but could never be a port,Theseaside was too far away was the common thought,
Until oneManc said hang on lads, I'm nobody's fool,We'llbring the coast to Manchester and cut out Liverpool,

With alittle innovation they got what they had planned,Little land-lockedManchester; third busiest port in the land,
So yeahthere's still an attitude and our young 'uns might walk daft,But behindour swagger is creation and honest, hard, Manc graft,
Cozthrough the annals of history, Manc's just wouldn't be thwarted,And that'sthe real Mancunian way, top one, nice one, get sorted.

POEM: Manchester Rocks!!

Manchester Rocks!!
Madchesterrocked my nineties but where did it all begin?Mostpeople say the Free Trade Hall with just forty people in,But inthat crowd of Pistol's fans, a new wave of stars was born,And fromthat night in seventy six, so many bands were spawned.
The firstin many critics' eyes, the reason Manchester rocks,Was thedebut of a Bolton band the legendary Buzzcocks,Blendingpunk with indie rock, a new age style came out, And Ever Fallenin Love made them post punks jump about.
Next camethe music of the Fall fuelling more revision,Then asound to dominate Mancunia came from Joy Division,A newTransmission caused Disorder, Love Will Tear Us Apart, But it wastragedy that struck them hard and a New Order would start.
SimplyRed, a soul/jazz band were at the Free Trade Hall,Twentyfive years of music, 50 million albums sold in all,Theirmusic Holding Back the Years, once Something Got Them Started,With Starsand Ain't That A Lot of Love, Mick left girls broken hearted.
The Smithswere influential with a most alternative of sound,WithCharming Man and Panic, they were musically crowned,Stop Me IfYou've Heard This One and Girlfriend in a Coma,HeavenKnows I'm Miserable Now, with Morrissey as their crooner.
BlueMonday brought electronic in, a sound before its time,Andsuddenly synth bass lines and kick drums weren't a crime,Then camesomething different to blow club land away,A GuyCalled Gerald rocked the Hac with a tune called Voodoo Ray.
The AcidHouse Revival took hold in eighty eight,WhenChicago and Detroit house made illegal raves vibrate,Italian OldSchool Piano boomed from Ride on Time,So manymovements happening, it really blew your mind.
House madeits way to Manchester; a drum machine made beats great,Blendingacid house with melodies re- mastered by 8-0-8 State,PacificState and Cubic were really In Yer face,And Manchester'snew music splintered at awe inspiring pace,
Madchesterspawned a brand new sound; a psychedelic rock,As indiemerged with Acid house another beat would drop,StoneRoses led the indie route, they knew This is The One,FoolsGold, One Love, would Be Adored with Sally Cinnamon.
Northsidetripped down memory lane and told us to Take Five,TheInspirals knew This is How it Feels... when Two Worlds Collide,Standingproud in Sackville, their T-shirts cool as f@ck,Hallelujahfor the Mondays who warbled Wrote For luck.
ShaunRyder looked to Step On, The Boys were back in TownAs Jamestold us to all Come Home and collectively Sit Down,TheCharlatans weren't The Only One I Know from way back when,TimBurgess in his White Shirt singing Opportunity and Then.
Manchestercovered every sound; N-Trance would set us free,How couldwe love M People more? Moving on Up on Angel Street,One Nightin Heaven, probably more, Pickering knew just what to do,Sub Subrocked the Hac once more, Angel's miles and miles of you.
Nothingstayed still, the Roses split but Brown didn't get the Fear,He hadUnfinished Monkey Business that'd rock both far and near,TheDolphins were the Monkeys, they'd join him on his Star,He evenborrowed Mani to play on bass guitar.
The MockTurtles Could Dig it? The Doves they had their Words,Evolvingfrom Sub Sub's house to the most peaceful indie birds,Morrissey'sgenius went solo, Ryder formed Black Grapes,But stillManchester rocked the charts and still produced some greats.
The technoedge of brothers Chemical would very soon emerge,Big beatpsychedelia was the sound those Uni boys would purge.TheyGalvanized electric sound with their famed Block Rocking Beat,Hey Girl,Hey Boy, Out of Control moving clubbers' feet.
But soonit was some other siblings successful turn to shiiiiine,As Noeland Liam Gallagher made the stadium stage their shrine,Theirsound would Live Forever, they really had it all,TheyRolled With it, The ShakerMaker's on their WonderWall.
WithCigarettes and Alcohol, they had a Masterplan,Half aWorld Away and back again but always being Manc,Nevercaring what Some Might Say just Feeling SuperSonic, Longoutlasting Madchester, the Gallagher's were right on it.
We evenhad a boy band, one to Rule The World,Singingsongs like Pray and Babe, It Only Takes a Minute Girl,One daythey would be Back for Good, so we'd Never Forget,HowBarlow's Million Love Songs made a million more girls (s)we(a)t.
Elbowbrought a chilled out sound, they loved The Bones of You,But they'dsettle for One Day Like This as long as its Powder Blue,TheStarlings and The Birds would also bring them hope,That they'dachieve their High Ideals and get An Audience With The Pope.
TheCourteeners Falcon rose and rose, they crossed their heart and hoped to fly,But they weren'tNineteen Forever so chilled out with a Lullaby,What TookYou So Long brought lots of rock, That Kiss brought all the roll,Cavorting,Aftershow, Will It be?... You Overdid it Doll.
Now if we pushthe boundaries... and I think we've got the nerve,We can includeLisa Stansfield and Richard Ashcroft's Verve,Then stretchingback to Bolton we've got Badly Drawn Boy, Whilst Stretford-bornJay Kay became Jamiroquai.
The lastfew years were quieter; the conveyor belt slowed down,But niceone Greater Manchester, so many bands and sounds,Innovation'sin Man-chester genes, in that we should take solace,So over to The Slow Readers Club, Mount Fabric and Optional Wallace.

The lastfew years were quieter; the conveyor belt slowed down,But niceone Greater Manchester, so many bands and sounds,Innovation'sin Man-chester genes, in that we should take solace,So over toSlow Readers Club, Mount Fabric and Optional Wallace.
