Saadiq, plus Colbert on Catholicism at TIME 100 Awards
Campus of the Georgetown University Law Center (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
Rafael Saadiq made the Time 100 Most Influential People, here’s the On Point show commentary (at 29:00) from yesterday. # #
Colbert hosted the dinner: #
“Also, Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke is here tonight. Also an instant, instant feminist icon. Famously tested, testified before Congress, that Georgetown, a Catholic institution, should be required to provide insurance coverage for her birth control. Now, TIME 100 honoree, his eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan disagrees — sir, lovely to see you again.Of course, now some, some critics have said in response to this that if the Catholic churchs insurance does not cover Sandra Flukes birth control, it shouldnt cover Cardinal Dolans Viagra.Oh, no, no, no. Oh, no, no, no, thats called celibacy plus. Thats how the pros do it. Because chastity is one thing, but it shows true commitment to uphold your vows when you are sporting a crook you could hang a miter on. Oh, wow, see you at mass on Sunday, sir?I hope he doesnt become Pope.Im a Catholic, its okay. I go to confession, it will be fine. Thank you.” #

QUOTE OF THE WEEK, LENA DUNHAM
NEW YORK, NY - APRIL 20: Actress and filmmaker Lena Dunham attends the 'Supporting Characters' Premiere during the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival at the AMC Lowes Village on April 20, 2012 in New York City. (Image credit: Getty Images via @daylife)
What were your favorite books as a child? Do you have a favorite character or hero from one of those books? Is there one book you wish all children would read? # #
I have tattoos from children’s books all over my arms and torso. The biggest one is of Ferdinand the bull, which Elliott Smith also had, but his was a different page. What a good message that book has! Just be yourself and don’t gore anyone with your horns if you don’t feel like it. #

Experience Music Project, NYU
Buddy Holly biographer Dave Laing (left) remembers rock historian Charlie Gillett at the Experience Music Conference, next to Robert Christgau, who called for a biography of Harvey Fuqua.
That abject fabulist Daphne Carr sold me a three-for-ten deal on her Pop Papers singles from Feedback Press. She was pushing "Endlessly Horny for Wonder and Magic: How Jim Steinman's Bat Out of Hell Perfectly Captured the Pre-Pubescent American Id (and Nearly Ruined Me for Life)," by Tim Quirk, whose subject put me off. The only thing worse than listening to Meat Loaf was having to read about him, I cracked, which got a big laugh from the academic flacks. But I'm gonna read "Well Down Freedom Highway: The Staple Singers' Masterpiece" by Mike McGonigal first, I've got a big gospel jones going on, and Mavis's late career resets the bar. # #

If upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court, the ruling could eventually result in residents, businesses and local governments being reimbursed for damages of as much as $20 billion, according to the lead attorney representing plaintiffs in the case…” #

JOYCE, THE MILLMAN BLOG
…A recent and worthy addition to the desert island disc genre comes from an unlikely source: actor Sam Neill's blog. Neill, the star of such films as The Piano and Jurassic Park and Fox's new J.J. Abrams-produced TV series Alcatraz, is one of the most knowledgeable and entertaining music fans (and accidental critics) around. He's also a winemaker in New Zealand, growing and selling under the Two Paddocks label. Neill and his winemaking staff have been compiling lists of Top 10-personal-music-faves for a few years now on the Two Paddocks blog. Neill's own lists of R&B and New Zealand music (written under the name "The Proprietor") are first-rate. He has also called on famous friends, like Marianne Faithfull, Stephen Fry, Toni Collette, Ian McKellen, Jorge "Hurley" Garcia and Alan Rickman, to contribute lists, and some of their choices will knock you out… #
