A Setback Means Time for a Reset
For anyone following my health journey (ie #lovecanceraway and #cancercyborg), I apologize for the delay in this update from the last PSA test result I received this past Tuesday. First, a little background. My highest PSA to date has been 122. (Normal varies with age but 4 or below is close enough.) On July 8th, it dropped by 37% to 77. This past Tuesday’s was 113.
And I made that mean a lot. Even though I had mapped out the various scenarios and what actions I would take if it was the same, lower, or higher. What I didn’t account for was the “automatic and mechanical mind/identity.” So, I spent close to a full day upset as hell that the test had gone up.
Fortunately, I’ve had sufficient training (especially from my Landmark work) not to stay stuck in the morass. What came out of that process is the title of this blog. I declared the test result was a setback in my intention to return to full health and vitality so it calls for a reset.
After all, one of the contexts in which I’m holding this situation is that it’s all an experiment. I mean, I’ve held all my life as an experiment in whether I can live true to my Divinely Inspired Life Purpose, so this is more of the same. And yes, the stakes appear higher than before. This is the hand the Big U decided was next for my transformation. So be it.
Reset TimeAs I mentioned, I had already mapped out what adjustments I would take if the test result came back higher than the previous one. Here are the adjustments I’m making:
I’ve placed myself back on Casodex. Also, known as Bicalutamide. It’s used to treat prostate cancer. This medication works by blocking the action of male hormones in the prostate, slowing the growth of cancer cells.Re-examine my nutritional approach. Nutrition is a big part of the alternative or complementary approach to cancer treatment, and it’s also one with much confusion and contradictory information. Thus, the need to try different approaches until finding what works for my body and the condition I’m dealing with. The immediate action from this second one is to back off on the fruit and fresh fruit juice. While I had found ample reputable resources that claimed that fresh fruit has plenty of nutrients to counter the accompanying glucose, that doesn’t appear to be the case in my situation.
A second approach that I’m continuing to research and learn about it using a Keto diet to help starve the cancer. This approach is too complicated to get into on this post. Maybe more to follow.
The Longer View of the Complementary ApproachAs I’ve continued this journey, I’ve at times used various words to describe the path I’m taking including alternative, holistic, metabolic, and natural. The one I’ve recently started using is complementary. Here’s why. My approach isn’t an either/or approach, but more of a both/and one. I’m not against modern, allopathic medicine. Not by a long shot. Most of my own education as a vet has been in that approach.
Already early on this journey, I’ve called upon allopathic medicine in the following ways:
PSA testsVisits with my PHP who referred me to a urologistA biopsy of the prostate gland to confirm the diagnosisA full-body and pelvic T3 MRI scan. This last one, the T3 MRI is cutting edge science which unfortunately our current health insurance system doesn’t cover. (Go figure.)
So, I’ve called upon allopathic medicine quite a bit for the diagnosis. Where we part company is in the recommended treatments which seems overly harsh, damaging and dangerous, with one possible exception which I’ll cover in a moment.
At this point, I’m exploring the various complementary and less invasive approaches. I want to give my body with the help of its immune system every opportunity to heal itself. However, still on the table of options is this other approach called TULSA.
The TULSA Procedure is a minimally invasive procedure that uses directional ultrasound to produce very high temperatures to ablate targeted prostate tissue. The procedure is performed in a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) suite and uses the TULSA-PRO® system to ablate prostate tissue.
And of course, like many things in life, this approach has one significant downside. Do you want to guess what that is? Well, it’s also NOT covered by health insurance/Medicare. The procedure runs about $35,000 to $40,000 dollars.
And with all that, it’s still a possibility. Everything I’m currently doing will only improve my chances and shorten my recovery time if it turns out I need to go the TULSA route.
My somewhat flexible timeline at this point is to give the complementary approach until mid to late October to show significant healing. I’m in regular communication with the Busch Center about this which is where I had my T3-MRIs performed and would likely be where the TULSA treatment would be performed as well.
Speaking of which, if you’ve read this far, please keep Kathy Busch, Dr. Busch’s wife, and an integral part of their practice in your thoughts and prayers. I found out yesterday that she’s been in the hospital being treated for COVID.

Vitamin C & Cancer (A #LoveCancerAway Report from #CancerCyborg)
One of the primary complementary treatment regimens I’m currently using to#lovecanceraway is high-level dosages of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) administered intravenously currently being given at Great Smokies Medical Center in Asheville under the guidance of Dr. John Wilson.
These twice-weekly treatments run approximately $253/treatments plus the occasional blood test to evaluate my vitamin C blood levels which cost about $150/test.
Thursday I received my eleventh treatment which has been slowly increased to the current level of 90 grams delivered through my #cancercyborgsub-clavicle port, my name for it, not theirs. (As a comparison, the typical oral daily dose of vitamin C is in the 250 to 500 mg range.)
A Personal Note: I find these IVC days challenging though Windy and Kendra, the two nurses who administer the treatments at GSMC are quite competent and kind. I end up needing to urinate more frequently which tends to burn more as the vitamin C levels increase. (Maybe a bit of TMI, but I want you to know the full story.) I also find these days emotionally challenging, though I am slowly adapting. I’ve noticed walking from my chair to the bathroom several times over the two-plus hours of treatments dragging along my IV stand makes me feel older than usual. Granted, my normal ‘internal state’ is stuck around a 12-year-old boy, except on these days when I feel much more like a 72-plus-year-old man.
On the other hand, here are some of the positive effects of this treatment on those misbehaving cancer cells:
Directly cell destructive (cytotoxic) to cancer cellsStops growth (proliferation) of cancer cellsReduces inflammation that propagates cancerProvides anti-oxidative supportProvides pro-oxidative effects that kill cancer cellsStimulates the immune system to fight cancerBlocks lymphatic (lymphagenesis) recruitment to cancer that promotes systemic spreadBlocks blood vessel (angiogenesis) recruitment to cancer that promotes systemic spreadBlocks metastatic spread of cancerChanges genetic expression (epigenetics) that inhibits cancerIs anti-viralPreserves mitochondrial functionA full report on this approach to treating cancer is available HERE.
NOTE: Please remember I am not providing these reports to try to persuade anyone to follow this path. I am simply sharing my journey by pointing out that there is such a path, or as I have described it, a Road Less Traveled.

A Road Less Traveled
M. Scott Peck opened his now famous book, The Road Less Traveled with these lines:
“Life is Difficult. This is a great truth, one of the greatest truths.”
Who am I to argue? I’m now on one of those difficult, yes, challenging, parts of life, as I deal with a recent diagnosis of prostate cancer. But what I want to borrow from Mr. Peck is not so much his opening lines as the title of the book, The Road Less Traveled.
You see, I realize I’ve placed myself on one of those less-traveled roads when I chose to treat and hopefully heal the cancer that is currently lodged in my prostate gland (where I pray it remains unless it disappears). What I want to point out is that a road less traveled doesn’t mean it’s a less valuable or relevant road to take. Perhaps it’s only that it’s not yet received the attention it deserves. (To learn more about how to more traveled cancer road came about, read Tripping over the Truth.)
Making the choice to pursue a more natural, holistic, complementary path of treatment is simply consistent with who I am and what I believe. That belief first learned in vet school is, “First, do no harm.” It’s what had me decline the orders of an orthopedic surgeon over forty years ago. After a cursory examination (during which he never even glanced at my back), the surgeon pronounced, “You have a badly herniated disc. I’m going to schedule you for surgery the first of next week.”
It was an order I declined and am pleased to report I’ve managed the situation through regular stretching, occasional acupuncture, and chiropractic care.
It’s also what led me to decline to have my left knee replaced with an artificial one after it began giving me problems while playing softball, or electing shoulder surgery after injuring that joint. Instead, I opted for more natural treatments. For my knee, after careful research, I elected Platelet Enriched Plasma (PEP) and prolotherapy treatments. For my shoulder, I chose acupuncture, massage, infrared heat, and cold fusion. Now, at 72, I continue to be one of the fastest runners on my senior softball team and throw as well if not better before the shoulder injury. (Remember, it’s not bragging if it’s a fact :-).)
So, taking this more natural and nutrition-based approach that I’m referring to as ‘loving my cancer away’ is the next leg of the journey down the same road less traveled. And I plan to continue to shine the light down this path so that others are made aware that such a road exists. At the same time, I want to be clear I’m not saying this less-traveled road is the one you should take. That’s not my job or intention.
Now, I’m not a complete novice when it comes to matters of health or science. I’ve been on a scientific and medical path since deciding at the age of six to become a veterinarian, but let’s face it, the training of a veterinarian is not the same as the training an oncologist receives, and that may actually be to my advantage in some ways.
As I said, I learned on the first day of vet school a basic tenant of the Hippocratic Oath–“First, do no harm.” (And, yes, I know it does not say that verbatim, but our instructors still drummed it into us.) As a veterinarian, I also learned how important nutrition is to all animals’ overall health and wellbeing including us humans. Again, to quote Hippocrates,
“Let food be thy medicine, and let medicine be thy food.”
Meanwhile, most of today’s medical doctors receive very little education in nutrition, and what courses are offered are usually electives and not required.
But, as I said, I’m not sharing my journey to try to persuade anyone that this is the ‘right’ road, or that the other more traveled path is the ‘wrong’ one to follow. I’ll leave that to each individual, as I trust each of you will honor my decision to continue down this road less traveled.

The Writer’s Taffy Machine
(Excerpted from the book, From Spark to Flame: Fanning Your Passion & Ideas into Money-making Magazine Articles that Make a Difference which is currently being revised and updated.)
Growing up, one of my favorite places to spend summer vacation was along the coast of North Carolina at Atlantic Beach, and one of my fondest memories is of watching the automatic taffy-pulling machine. Into one end of this magical machine, the owner would pour the ingredients for making taffy that, of course, included a lot of sugar. He would then turn the machine on and after a few minutes, it would begin churning out multi-colored strands of taffy, ready to be boxed and sold to a line of salivating children, including me.
Because of that cherished memory, I now have upon my office wall what I call my “Writer’s Taffy Machine.” At one end I pour in the sweet blend of ideas and passion, while the other end churns out checks from magazine publishers. Between these two ends are all the steps we’ll cover in detail in this book.
By the time you finish reading, you’ll know how to build a writer’s taffy machine, and, if you accept the coaching and do the assignments, you’ll be well on your way to building one for yourself.
At this point, ask yourself a couple of important questions:
Am I interested in building my own writer’s taffy machine? Will I do the necessary work to maintain my machine and have it churn out publishable writing that makes money?Take a few moments now and answer these questions for yourself. Then, get a notebook or journal to use in conjunction with this book and make your first entry a written statement of what you intend to accomplish from our working together through this book. Be as specific as possible. If you’re unsure whether or not you’re ready to commit to doing the work, that’s fair. Write that down. This is just a starting point, and you can always revise your intentions later. I encourage you to stretch beyond what you think you can accomplish. Remember, part of my job as your writing coach is to improve your performance beyond what you can accomplish on your own.

And the Research Fun Continues with Cat Island
Shortly after discovering that my “clan of cats” that will appear in my upcoming novel, Junkyard Dogs, reside in the abandoned Renwick Smallpox Hospital on Kennedy Island, I shared this research with my wife, Ann, who’s always ready to share her own ideas, many of which appear in my stories as well.
As I finished sharing my research with her, she added, “And the cats that now live on Kennedy Island migrated from the Island of Cats in Japan.” I smiled and replied something glibly like, “Sure thing,” or “Maybe. We’ll see.”
But later, I began to wonder where would a clowder (yep more research revealed this little nugget that a group of cats is called a clowder) of a hundred or more cats come from, so I did a quick Google search for “Island of Cats in Japan,” and found my next background info to fold into my story. Check out this link: https://www.theatlantic.com/photo/2015/03/a-visit-to-aoshima-a-cat-island-in-japan/386647/.
Isn’t life grand? What’s your favorite nugget of gold you gleaned from research you’ve conducted while writing a story that added flavor to the finished piece?

Researching Stories is Fun…Sometimes
I would have to say that as a fiction author I have a love/hate relationship to research or at least a like/dislike one. One thing I dislike about research is that it can be a nearly bottomless pit into which I can lose myself spending far more hours than I want when what I most want to do is just start writing. On the other hand, I very much like it when in the process of writing a story I realize I need to do some additional research and in the process of doing that I discover something that really exists in the world that will add to the fantastical nature of the story I’m creating.
For example, I recently discovered the need for some more research about colonies of cats in New York City for my work-in-progress, Junkyard Dogs. (Remember, an alternate title I’m considering is Junkyard Dogs & Mouser Cats.) So off to Google I went and within a few well-placed keywords discovered Roosevelt Island, not far from Manhattan, the location of the Renwick Smallpox Hospital. The hospital was used for nineteen years until 1875 when the hospital itself was relocated, and the Gothic-revival style building converted into a nurses’ dormitory. By the 1950s, the original smallpox hospital was abandoned. In 1975, the Landmarks Preservation Committee declared the structure a city landmark, and the only landmarked ruin in New York City.
But here’s the really cool part. The hospital is now home to a colony of approximately one-hundred feral cats. What a perfect setting for my story and far beyond anything I would likely have imagined. Yes, sometimes research is a lot of fun.

My Favorite Question to Ask Readers (Part 2)
So, remember, my favorite question to pose to readers is: “If you could go on a mission with the Eco-team of Ra-Kit the magic cat, Sampson, the flying dog, and young Zak, what mission to help the animals of Earth would you choose?”
As I mentioned in the last posting, this question has also spawned some interesting results already. One young girl who participated in one of the first Readup said she’d want to go on a mission where the Eco-team would help abused and mistreated dogs and cats, and where one of the abusers would learn his or her lesson and correct their bad behavior.
A few days after hearing this I remembered an interview I had conducted back during my freelance days writing purposeful profiles about people making a difference in the world. One of those purposeful people was Chitra Besbroda, a woman from Sri Lanka who’d moved to Harlem where she discovered many dogs who were being used as ‘living burglar alarms.’ Her first meeting with one of these ‘junkyard dogs’, Teddy, changed the course of her life. Not only did she save Teddy, but that was just the beginning. She eventually found Sentient Creatures, a nonprofit, and has saved thousands of dogs and pets since that interview.
So, I brought these two ideas together for the basis for my forthcoming book with the working title of Junkyard Dogs. Also in the running is Junkyard Dogs & Mouser Cats. Which do you prefer?
Leave your vote below.
I’ll continue to ask this question not only on all my future Readups (we’re committed to continuing them monthly through at least the spring of 2021) but everywhere else including here. After all, I plan to write three more installments of the Zak Bates Eco-adventure series in 2021 so I could really use your suggestions?
