What do Emily Dickinson & Gilligan's Island have in common?
Go here to find out.
(Here's a clue... Emily Dickinson's poems...) By the way, the link includes a funny Emily D comic I had never seen.

People in our Neighborhood -
Here are what a few of my favorite people/poets have been up to. Enjoy--
If you haven't read this post by Collin Kelley, you should.
He asks:
So, I have questions for all of you who read this blog: How we can get back to the pleasure of the art rather than the jockeying for position, awards and writing personal attacks masquerading as "literary criticism?" How do we set a larger place at the poetry table for those working outside the academy? How do we make the art of poetry interesting...

I believe I forgot to post this over the summer, but here's the list of winners and finalists for our Crab Creek Review poetry contest judged by the wonderful poet, Nancy Pagh (No Sweeter Fat

And what I think is fab about our contest is that we are publishing all the winners, honorable mentions, & finalists in Crab Creek Review 2011: Issue 1!

We received a huge number of poetry contest submissions this year and we were impressed...

Aimee Nezhukumatathil's last post on the Ploughshares' blog
Aimee has been blogging over on the Ploughshares blog. You can check out her last post on gratitude and much more here.
Here's some of Aimee's post that I loved--
What I wanted to talk about here for my last post was the idea ofgratitude in a writer's life. A French proverb says, "Gratitude is the heart's memory." I would even say that Gratitude is the writer's memory. Right now, I am knee-deep in edits for Lucky Fish, my third collection of poems from Tupelo Press, due out next year...

Writing Rituals
[image error]
In working on my non-fiction work yesterday, it occurred to me while I was searching a document for the word "ritual," that it appears in the word, "spiritual."
I cannot believe I never noticed that.

Lunch Poem
It Is Born
Here, I came to the edge
where nothing needs to be said,
everything is learned with weather and ocean,
and the moon returned
with its lines silvered
and each time the shadow was broken
by the crash of a wave
and each day on the balcony of the sea
wings open, fire is born
and everything continues blue as the morning.

Name for My Writing Shed...
This Pablo Neruda quote in my writing shed has inspired me--
"On the balcony of sea wings..."
I think I may have found a name for my writing shed. I'm going to let it simmer for a few days so I know for sure...

Getting My Groove Back... Where I Am Today--
(if you look carefully under the flowers, you will see a small Mason jar of Jelly Bellies & two pieces of chocolate - the good life!)
It's September 1st.
My daughter is back at school. My husband is at the gym. My dog has been walked. Our guinea pigs have been fed. Our cats have been adored. And I am in my writing shed beginning to write again.
Here are a few techniques I do to help me focus time to writing.
1) First, I mark off the hours I plan to write on your calendar. I view ...
