Space Property Rights

I’m looking forward to participating in the University of Arizona’s inaugural space law and policy forum on October 12.  It will be a day of discussions on property rights in space, crowded orbits, responsible stewardship of the moon, and national security.  I’ll be on the property rights panel.

If you wish to attend, it’s here in Washington, DC, and free of charge for the day.  Check it out!  The Future is Almost Now:  Issues in Space Law and Policy.

HIS TERRIBLE STALL is available now!

On a lost and stranded colony world, with his brother’s family at risk, Peter Dawe will do what he must to protect them.

A lost starship’s settlers turn one valley on an alien planet into a terraformed replica of Earth. The rest of the planet offers only hardship and madness. Despite the oasis First Landing provides, the ship’s crew fled decades earlier with their fabricators, spacecraft, and knowledge when those controlling the valley threatened their freedoms.

The ship’s crew founded a sep...

HIS TERRIBLE STALL – The Cover is Here!

I managed to get another awesome Tom Edwards cover for the fifth book in my Martha’s Sons series.  Peter Dawe is back!

Just FYI, I’ll be putting the short stories, Transport and Deliver and Relief Afar, into a related category when I publish His Terrible Stall so that the numbering is correct.  Stall is the fifth novel.  The stories are merely “related to” the series.  You’ll still be able to find them on Amazon.

Terraforming Earth

Thinking about terraforming barren, alien rock worlds has made me a tad obsessive about the lessons we can learn from remediation and restoration of the native terrain here on Earth.  Native plant popularizers like Douglas Tallamy or wilding proponents like Isabella Tree may not be thinking about space settlement, but I am.  So I’m reading a lot of strange things.

The Interstellar Research Group is looking at what kind of experiments would be useful for creating arable soil out of the Martian re...

Happy Independence Day, Summer Update, and Relief Afar

First, let me say Happy Independence Day!  My husband and I got to watch fireworks one of the neighbors engineered by a pond, and it was wonderful, taking me back to summer homeleaves in Minnesota where we watched everyone’s fireworks all around the lake.

Also, I want to apologize for the lack of posting.  Both my websites lost all speed to extent that they became too frustrating to use, for me or readers.  I tried to address the issue in February, but with no luck.  Between work, teaching, and ...

New Years Update

Happy new year!  I hope yours is off to a good start, and that 2022 looks up for everyone.

I wanted to bring you up to date on my writing plans.  I just turned in a short story for a Baen terraforming anthology,  Under a Crimson Sun.  It’s a shared universe anthology about the first human mission to Ross 248. I’m quite excited about it, and have my fingers crossed that my story gets accepted.

I’m in the final third of drafting His Terrible Stall, the fifth novel in the Martha’s Sons series.  Sil...

Holiday Gifts for Terraformers

It’s that time of year again, when our thoughts turn to buying gifts for our loved ones with a sense of doom, panic, and utter terror.  Be not afraid.  I’m here to help.

First, for the terraformer on your list, I cannot recommend Douglas Tallamy’s Bringing Nature Home strongly enough.  I’ve been gardening for a couple decades or more, and I wish I’d known long ago how important native plants are to the food chain.  I admit I bought this book because I was searching for a more comprehensive theor...

New Release: TRANSPORT AND DELIVER is now live on Amazon!

When flight on a boat jeopardizes all a family has worked for, can an errant son risk his life to save their future?

The Luwenthals—second generation settlers on the lost planet Not What We Were Looking For—confront the destruction of their past life, and are forced to flee. As the boat containing the family’s prized linotype crosses a river lit by the flames of the printshop they had to abandon, fifteen-year-old Tobias Luwenthal must face his father’s ire over what he sees as his son’s betrayal...

Sticky Lawyers Podcast

Attorney John Reed is doing a fun series of podcasts about attorneys with unique legal careers.  I apparently qualified, and he interviewed me. It was great fun, and we even discussed science fiction.

The link just went live:  You can also check out interviews with ocean lawyers, explorer lawyers, and comic book lawyers.

Free Martha’s Sons Story: RELIEF AFAR

Spoiler Alert:  First, if you haven’t read the first two books in the Martha’s Sons series, don’t read this post at all.  It contains spoilers.
