WIP The Movie! Blog Hop #cursescanbebroken

This blog hop is co-hosted by Kyra Lennon and Rachel Schieffelbein.

I have several WIPs at the moment, but the one I’m most excited about is the follow-up to my first novel. This first book, Eternal Curse: Giovanni’s Angel,  just came out, but I’m not sitting around idly waiting for people to fall in love with it. There’s so much more of this story to be told. The idea of casting the characters of this book for a movie blew my mind, and don’t even get me started on the soundtrack.

So here is it, the line-up for, Eternal Curse: Battleground…Character Spoilers present but no plot points.

****

Giovanni- He’s the title character of the first book and is actually a dual character. Giovanni/Bletsian is a kind of a shape-shifter with angelic and demonic ancestry. For him, I think I’d try to cast a complete unknown so there would be no preconceived notions about how this character would act. But I do have a specific look in mind when I picture him. I picture a handsome Middle Eastern man like  with ’s tall frame and Wolverine body, but with long black hair…Oh, and G/B has gray skin, so ethnicity doesn’t doesn really matter here.

from IMDB      |    from Google search- www.businessinsider.com

When I think of how G/B feels about and interacts with the overall story and the other characters, I think of the song, Thank You by Dido. (click here to watch video)

****

Mira- She is human and is G/B’s love interest, and she’s also black (which some people find shocking). What is so special about this character in this second book is that because she’s been around G/B’s supernatural presence for so long, she too has begun to change. She is older and aging, but aging incredibly graceful. For her I picture a combination of two actresses:   and . Angela looks more than good for her age making her idea for the role, but Naomie fits her better in every other possible way.

When I think of Mira, from both the first book and the second, I think of Superwoman by Alicia Keys. (click here to watch the video)

****

Tori (Victoria)- She is a new character to the series and pretty much the heroine of this installment. She is Mira’s daughter, but there’s more to that story than I’m currently willing to giveaway. Needless to say, they don’t really look alike. Tori is also human. She sounds nice and sweet, which she is for the most part, but later on it becomes clear why her name means “victory”. For her I picture someone like either of the Mowry Twins (more ) or .

When I think of Tori, I think of Fighter by Christina Aguilera.

****

Sheldon- He is also a new character to the series, and is by far, the saddest character in my story simply because of who he is. He’s a pale prepubescent boy with pointed ears, a tail, and an inability to grow up. He is G/B’s son and also a supernatural being, in case that wasn’t clear. For him I might also go with an unknown simply because kids grow up so quickly. When I think Sheldon, I think compare him more to other child characters. I guess for him, I could image some actors when they were younger, such as: , , and .

When I think of Sheldon, the song Bitter Sweet Symphony by The Verve comes to mind. (click here to watch the video)

****

The next few characters I won’t spend so much time on because I could just keep going on for days and pages. These are secondary characters who are vital to the overall story.

Jack- He is new to the series and is another human who is up in age, though he hasn’t aged so gracefully. However, he is strong and physically fit from never faltering on an active military-like lifestyle.  For him I image someone like, .

Google search- screencritix.com

Lilly- She is also human but is a returning character to the series. When my readers first meet her she is a young child, but in the second story she is a simple elderly woman of Asian descent.  For her I imagine someone like .

 from IMDB

Michael (Michelangelo)- He is another human and new character to the series and just happens to be crazy about Tori. For him I image pretty much any young, tall, blond actor. For now I’ll go for with a dye job.

from IMDB

****

Up top are the major players, but I have so many more worth mentioning, but I’ll only throw in a few.

Fred- He’s a supernatural character who is new to the series. He’s tall, dark-skinned, and nice looking from the front, but from behind has a spine lined with spikes. His knees and elbows are also spiky.

Ester- She is a very important supernatural character who is also new to the series. She is a symbol and representation of purity; for that reason her skin is white like marble. She is completely hairless; yes that means she’d bald, but she still exudes femininity.

Iris- He is also new to the series and is a supernatural character. He’s a very serious character and a leader. He’s very tall and muscular and looks like a tar statue. His skin is actually black as tar.

Marcos- This is the same villain from the first book. Just as in the first story, Marcos remains a hideous troll, the opposite of his once beautiful self. In this story however, Marcos spends most of his time hidden in the form of his host. He’s uses his host body so that he’ll not have to face the harsh reality of his true appearance.

Ivor- He’s the host for Marcos in this story. He’s an average looking man, but even before he encounters Marcos he is deeply troubled and has a rather menacing look about him. He was once a gypsy.

The overall feel of this second Eternal Curse book makes me think of Uprising by Muse.

A Day in My Life: Feb. ’14

dayNlife

You may or may not find this surprising, but as a writer I’ve never been much of a journaler (I like making up words). I’ve always kept writing, sketching, and poetry notebooks, but I’ve never really liked writing about myself. This monthly post is my attempt at rectifying that and is an opportunity for me to get a little personal, as I share a single event from my life.

******************************************************************************

February 2014 – The not-so-sweet life

So here’s the truth of the matter.

My life is very uneventful. I go to my day job, I come home and write, and I try to spend time with my family when I can. There’s been quite a bit of sadness and sickness going around lately and I’ve been less than thrilled with the result of my book launch. I’m proud of my book and the dozen or so people who’ve read it seem to like it. I’m moving forward with the sequel and am seeking beta readers for it now.

As for a day in my life, I just ate some of the best macaroons on the planet. I got them from a little bakery service called: Hummingbird Macarons. So I guess there is a little something sweet happening in my world right now.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post. If you like it let me know and share it with others. See you next time, Toi Thomas. #thetoiboxofwords

Mira’s Closet: 2/24/14

MClosetMira’s no fashionista, but she definitely has her own sense of style…

And now here’s an update on just that.

First an observation: I’m constantly working to make myself a versatile writer, but I sometimes wonder if that means I need to be versatile person. I like to think that I have many varied interests, but do I really…and when it comes to fashion do I play it safe or am I more daring? One thing I can say is that I’m not driven by labels. Labels are nice if they just happen to appear on something I like, but I wonder; if clothes really do make the person, then what does my wardrobe say about me? Who knows? That’s why I’m a writer not a fashionista. However, when I do want to look extra special, I at least know where I can go to receive guidance.

Now here are some style tips/clips from

Tori

my own personal fashion guru, trainer, and my physical inspiration for Mira.

It’s Like the Full Moon chapter 3.2 (wip)

“Why not,” said Paul. “Take me for instance, I stopped drinking like a fish once I became old enough to do it legally and now I only drink socially, but I got pretty pissed in my time.”

“In your time,” snickered Rebecca slightly placing her hand over her mouth just touching her bottom lip with her index finger. “You couldn’t possibly be old enough to be talking about ‘in your time.’”

Paul tilted his head slightly adoring Rebecca’s delicate gestures with her hands before responding to her comment. “Just how old do you think I am?” he asked seriously.

“Young,” replied Rebecca simply.

“I’m twenty-two for the time being, but I have a birthday in two weeks if that suites you better,” Paul stated firmly.

“Twenty-two, oh my. Are you still in school?” asked Rebecca.

Richard Taylor Interview

toiboxinterview

The Eternal Curse Series Blog Presents an interview with author: Richard Taylor.

So tell me, who is Richard Taylor?

I’m retired from the army and from business; always loved writing but never had time until working on the road, living remote, reaching into that inner self.  I started my Vietnam memoir in evenings while I was away from home. Prodigals: A Vietnam Story, became a prize winner at the Pikes Peak Writers Conference and featured selection of the Military Book Club. Homeward Bound: American Veterans Return from War was a featured selection of the Association of the U. S. Army. All my novels reflect the human condition in war–specifically love and war.  I write what I know about.

So whacha got for me today?

Eden Lost, published by Tate Publishing is a historical romance set in 1898-1901 in the Philippines, when Commodore Dewey steamed into Manila Bay and sank the Spanish fleet. Josh Armand is interested in commercial interests but is entranced by the enigmatic Isabella Germain, a mysterious mestizo. He needs her to organize his rescue from Chinese kidnappers. But her covert activities in support of Filipino rebels clashes with his loyalties and moral values. Their love is sharply tested by cultural divisions, divided allegiances and dangerous circumstances of war. They strive to overcome incalculable dangers and difficulties to find enduring love while Eden lies in peril.

So who’s starring is this 2 dimensional script read of Eden Lost?

There are many historical characters who contribute to the story, including: Commodore Dewey, Arthur MacArthur, Frederick Funston, and Emilio Aguinaldo. The two main characters are Joshua Armand, a steam engineer and entrepreneur, drummed into service supporting Dewey on his journey to destiny in Manila Bay. When Josh goes ashore he’s almost run down by a carriage with a beautiful Eurasian woman, Isabella Germain. However, she has been supporting the revolution against Spain and runs a “Gentleman’s Club” to gather intelligence. Her business is contrary to Josh’s prudent Boston upbringing. As the war becomes a conflict between Americans and Filipinos, it squeezes their relationship, increasing pressures of their cultural differences. The big question is whether they can overcome those differences and find happiness or is the chasm too wide? A minor character who plays an important role is Hans Jourdans, a reporter who provides color and context to events as they unfold. This story grew from my service in the Philippines and is filled with Filipino myths as well as historical circumstance.

Past, present, future, is there a rhyme or reason to your writing?

I’ve always wanted to write fiction, but I’m handicapped by my past. I couldn’t start a novel until I got some things out of my system. I had found a stack of letters I’d written my wife from Vietnam–didn’t know she’d saved them–but I re-lived things I’d shoved to the back of my psyche. Until I wrote Prodigals, I couldn’t clear that. An opportunity came out of the blue to write Homeward Bound, a history of veterans from the Revolution to the present and I did that, finishing it while I was working in Iraq. Having wasted lots of paper on failed novels, I finally learned to write what I knew–war, veterans, and the human condition relative to that.

My first novel was about the Cold War, the Berlin Wall. Berlin Connection takes the sweep of history from the construction of the wall until it came down. The major characters–Kennedy, Reagan, Bush, Khrushchev, and Gorbachev are there, but the real story is about three of the little people working tirelessly under the radar to bring down the wall.

My second novel, The Raptor and the Mourning Dove, began to take shape during my first year in Iraq. It tackles problems of physical and psychological wounds from that war. Both of these were self-published as e-books and print-on-demand. Raptor may get a shot from a traditional publisher.

Of course, Eden Lost, by a traditional publisher, is set during the Philippine-American War. I’ve started on a sequel to Eden Lost set in World War II Philippines, working title, “Return to Eden.” This is interesting because I’m transferring a paranormal aspect from Eden Lost. I’m spending some time now on poetry from fields of conflict–Vietnam, Cold War, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

What author(s) has most influenced your writing? Why or how?

That’s a tough one to answer. I suppose Hemingway as a person because of his life and writings, although I’m not a huge Hemingway fan. I was more influenced, or encouraged, by my high school English teacher, Mrs. Lady Booth Garner, and Mr. Booth, my college English professor (no relation). And again by the editor of my first book who is also a military affairs writer, Eric Hammel. Since I’m getting into poetry, I liked the old guys–Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Edgar Allen Poe, Robert Service because they tell compelling stories in their poetry; and from World War I–Rupert Brooke and Wilfred Owen because they show the deep scars. I suppose I’m mostly influenced by that “inner self.”

Whose brain are you just itching to scratch?

No doubt one would be Hemmingway. And I’d ask about his wars and his wives. I’d just like to hang out with him a while over more than a few beers.

Another, if I can cheat, would be Civil War General Lew Wallace, who wrote Ben Hur.

And as long as I’ve gone over the mark, the third would be T.E. Lawrence for Seven Pillars of Wisdom.

Who is so you and why?

I’m an old fashioned person and have often thought I was born in the wrong century. I can’t compare myself to Frederick Funston, but I admire his short life which he lived so fully. He was completely into himself, an excellent writer and soldier and adventurer. I was inspired by everything in his heroic life. If I’d lived in the post-Civil War period, I would have wanted to know Funston, but doubt if I could have kept up with him.

What’s your ideal reading spot for your next highly anticipated read?

Right now I’m sitting in my little office space on the terrace level of our townhouse, overlooking the 7th hole of a golf course. The fairway is narrow and just on the other side is the active railroad bed of the former Western & Atlantic Railroad. Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign was fought along those tracks from Chattanooga to Atlanta. Sherman said those tracks should “be the pride of every American” and “every foot should be sacred ground.”  I’m constantly inspired by the sound of trains going through Big Shanty Station.

I’ve just read Nathan Philbrick’s paperback Mayflower because I was seeking information on my 8th great grandfather, Richard Warren and my wife’s 11th great grandfather, Edward Fuller–both were aboard. They didn’t merit much mention, but the book was a compelling read anyway. I’m just finished Krauthammer’s Things that Matter and started Bob Gate’s Duty. Oh, and for my book club this month, Necessary Lies.

What was your favorite book or story, pre-teen years?

That’s not too hard. I remember Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island and Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe very well, in addition to the Hardy Boys mystery series. Also one I just re-read was Henry Stanley’s How I found Livingstone. My favorite quote from that is: “The unencumbered mind recalls all that it has read, all that pleased the eye, and delighted the ear; and reflecting on every idea which either observation, or experience, or discourse has produced, gains new information by every reflection. The intellect contemplates all the former scenes of life; views by anticipation those that are yet to come; and blends all ideas of past and future in the actual enjoyment of the present moment.” Amen…
