Title Change

Nothing like a last-minute title change to throw you for a loop. On Friday, while speaking to my editor, he mentioned that the house didn't like my title and offered this one—We Thought Ourselves Good People Who Lived Good Lives. I hated it. But then I slept on it over the weekend and realized that it wasn't half bad. In fact, I kind of love it. I'm all for long titles as evidenced by my collection, so this title seems utterly befitting and pretty darn brilliant. Thanks, Algonquin Books, for breathing another bit of new life into the book. Edited Ms. of Antonia Lively Breaks The Silence Arrives

The edited manuscript of Antonia Lively Breaks The Silence arrived at my doorstep today. A note from my editor was attached: “David—At last! Years in the making, and with a cast of thousands…! Chuck.” Indeed, years in the making and with a cast of thousands…Now, the ms. is with a copyeditor (Dear copyeditor, please, find [...]

Author Photo Revealed…

After poring over hundreds of photos and narrowing them down to about a dozen, I think the fantastic publicity team at Algonquin Books made the right choice. Filed under: publishing, writing Tagged: Antonia Lively Breaks The Silence, author photo

Antonia Lively Breaks The Silence: An Update

So it’s been ten years from inception of novel, in 2003, to publication by Algonquin Books, in 2013. Too much has happened between then and now to go into it all here and now. Many have asked me when the novel’s coming out and I can now safely say that it will be out in [...]

And We’re Back…

Yeah, okay, so you probably forgot about me. It’s okay. I probably forgot about you, too. No hard feelings, huh. Shake on it? Still friends? You bet your ass. (I still think blogging‘s absurd, but, hey, I thought the Internets and cell phones were absurd and now look at them. Look at me.)   I’ve [...]

The Literary Takedown

Anis Shivani—ever hear of him? I expect you will, if you haven't already. He's an outspoken, irreverent writer who blogs for the Huffington Post about all things literary (or not). I love the guy, if for no other reason than he's saying things that no one else will. MFAs ruining fiction? Wells Tower got you [...]

A Masterpiece in American Friction

I've been following the Jonathan Franzen phenomenon for a little while, reading up on it. You should, too. Two great reviews, contrary reviews, appeared in The Atlantic and in The New Republic.  Backlash? Honest critiques? A little of both, perhaps, but they are just as valid as the glorious and hyperbolic praise that ran in [...]
