December Blues
The cold seeps through every crack in the house. The scent of chili awakens the taste buds bringing a rush of saliva to the tongue.
Yup, winter is here. Unfortunately, it won't bring much snow to the area, just wet cold. Time to rein in the writing and crafting projects running wild through my imagination.
In order to improve upon my craft(s), I'm going to attempt to write, and/or post a craft video, at least once a week. Several novels await completion and revision. Perhaps my readers would like to choose which one I share with them? My holiday gift to you; read it while I write it or watch it while I make it.
Also considering a change in blog platforms...
Suggestions?
Below are the openings to three novels I am writing. Which one would you like to read as I write during this cold winter?
Novel Option 1I saw the old, witch woman in the woods. It was too cliche. Really it was. How many scary movies begin with some old witch in the woods? Her long, salt and pepper hair hung past her butt, jutting out over her shoulders, an unkempt mess of dull wire. Planted on her crown was a tattered fishing hat hosting not lures and hooks, but some strange objects I couldn't identify from a distance. She was reaching up, her gnarly, crooked, arthritic fingers bent every which way. I wondered how she could even complete her task with hands like that. A worn, black coat hung on her thin frame and covered her ankles. She hadn't noticed me, or at least hadn't acted as though she'd noticed me, until I was within her personal space--I was bad about that, getting into people’s personal space and ignoring my intuition. After one glance toward me with her rheumy eyes, she continued her work, unbothered by the fact that I watched her so closely. I should have known when my stomach did that flip. I should have left her to work and returned home, ignoring my pressing curiosity.
Novel Option 2Crouched deep in the closet corner, spandex clad knees shook with anticipation beneath his calloused hands. He couldn't believe he was hiding in a closet dressed in his Comic Con superhero costume. If one of his friends saw him dressed this way today... he shook his head at the thought.Only she could talk him into wearing this costume on a normal day. Of course, she was the only one who knew the truth about him.She thought he was a real superhero. Hmpf! What did she know? She was only seven years old.He could hear her soft footsteps approaching. He'd grown to love her so much this past six months. She was so innocent, so delicate, so in need of someone to protect her. She'd become the little sister he never knew.As he squatted there, waiting for her to pull the door open, listening to her last few approaching steps, her high-pitched scream startled him from his hiding place. He burst from the closet, panic creasing his masked face. No! No!Not now!His body shook with rage; his jaw muscles swelled as his teeth clenched. Every step became the longest sprint of his life, yet his stride seemed to slow down. Her scream muffled, grew distant, silenced. No! The word flourished deeply within and then rose in crescendo. He wasn't going to make it.Not this time.By the time he made it to the other room, she would be dead, just like all of the other times. He couldn't save her.She thought he was a superhero.Novel Option 3
The bicycle tire appeared before my hood in seconds, the silver spokes a sunlit blur as it spun into view of my side window briefly reminding me of the bikes Matt and I rode around campus when we were in college.A concerned frown fought back the smile forming as I thought of Matt. My foot stomped the brake pedal. Matt was the reason I was running late, driving a little too fast maybe. The screech of my tires brought neighbors to their front doors, out on their frosty lawns in their flannel robes, cups of coffee in hand, roiling steam distorting their shocked faces in the chilly morning air.Matt and I used to live in a neighborhood similar to this one, I thought as my rear tires fishtailed on the road before coming to a stop.
My own steaming cup of coffee rested in the holder behind the gear shift, dots of dark liquid escaped the small opening as the sudden stopped rocked the liquid forward, then back again. I glanced down at it, wishing it was in my hand, distorting my face as I stood out there on a lawn next to Matt, watching the accident unfold. My left temple plunked onto the top of my steering wheel as my car bounced, and I was afraid to look up, afraid to get out of the car, afraid to see the person lying in the road beyond the black hood of my car. Frozen in time and space, an icy crystal joining the others in the grass outside my window, I kept my thoughts on Matt as people hovered, gathered, peered inside at me through circled hands.

P. G. Shriver, Sally and Red on Parade
Sally, Red, and I went to McGregor for the renewed Founders' Day Parade! It's big news 'round these parts, as the parade fizzled out over the years.
Some McGregor go-getters decided to start up the parade again, which was excellent news for Sally's tour!
That meant more decorations and new Festival Adventure 2016 promo shirts created by this lovely lady, who happens to be my crafty first cousin.
Design by Debbie LowreyAnd... here's what I started with on this new adventure!
How could you find anything...
on such a messy table?
No worries! Finding this was easy!Would you like to see Red's look for the McGregor Founders' Day Parade? Well, stay tuned! After the big parade reveal, I'll post the results.Have a terrific weekend! Oh, wait! Here's a little video for you!
