SPRING

All winter long

the trees in our backyard

were gray, empty sticks.

But a Cardinal came each morning

and sang from sunrise to noon.

Her song spoke

of a Spring to come

with blooms and flowers and fresh green leaves.

Now, that Spring

is here.

Life

I live a solitary life.

TIME MOVES QUICKLY

Christmas comes and goes, then Spring appears and Summer, then Christmas again, faster than it used to. Already the squirrels are playing mating games in the trees behind the house.

The President's rhetoric and attitude empowers the worst among us. He talks the way he does because he receives roaring support from his followers - otherwise decent people who think they can cheer his rhetoric without consequence. But the President is empowered by audience feedback which drives his rhetoric to greater extremes. That extremist language is understood by Conservative extremists as approval of their agenda and conduct, which empowers violence from the Right in a cycle of hate and violence that continues to rise higher and higher. All of it from extremists, legitimized by his refusal to denounce them, who see themselves as the President's political foot soldiers. They are current era Brown Shirts.
