A Few Responses to Reader Emails
Hey guys, I’ve been getting your emails about FIND ME and I thought it would be fun to answer some of my favorites as a blog post. Everybody ready? No?
Heh. Too late.
“Why doesn’t your book have any werewolves in it?” Dude, I don’t even know. That was seriously short-sighted on my part. Maybe next book. But, honestly? Probably not. So to make it up to you, if you come to my signing, I’ll give you a werewolf sticker. It’s almost as good.
Yeah, I’m lying. I don’t have any werewolf stickers. I only have unicorns. You know how hard it is to find werewolf stickers? Hard. It’s like trying to find a live unicorn. And that my friends is irony you won’t read about in the SAT.
Okay, moving on.
“I want to buy this book for my daughter who hasn’t forgiven me for cheating on her mother and the subsequent divorce. Will this be a good gift?” Definitely. You should buy two copies. Maybe three. Now is not the time to skimp. Also? A pony. Ponies are a great investment. Not really for you. For you, it’s expensive. But for her it’s going to pay dividends in awesome. Another tip? Don’t cheat on her mom.
What else do we have?
“Meh, FIND ME sounds okay, but CITY OF BONES sounds so much more exciting. And there’s a movie.” Dude, I know. Cassandra Clare is made of amazing. Plus she had the foresight to put werewolves in her books. But did I mention the stickers?
“You look like you smell really good.” Hmmm. That’s…creepy…and sweet…but mostly creepy.
Moving on.
“Will I like your book?” Man, I hope so.

Channel 20 Something Cover Reveal!
Channel 20 Something is Amy Patrick’s NA Debut!! Amy’s a two-time Golden Heart finalist (2013 and 2014). She lives in Rhode Island with her husband and two sons and actually craves the heat and humidity of Mississippi, where she grew up. She’s been a professional singer and news anchor and currently narrates audio books as well as working as a station host for a Boston TV station.
Synopsis:
22-year-old Heidi Haynes is almost one year into her “real life”. She has her first reporting job and her first apartment, but she’s yet to experience first love. Yes, she’s in a comfortable relationship with her college sweetheart, and according to her friends and family, he’s perfect for her. But for some reason she’s not as eager to talk about walking down the aisle as he is.
And while Heidi’s doing what she wants to do, she’s not where she wants to be. She longs for big cities, big-market breaking news, and real independence from her way-too-close-by helicopter parents. Problem is, the last time she left the security of home for new places and new people, things didn’t go so well. Disastrously, in fact, and she came running back to a local college and a “safe” boyfriend.
Well-traveled Californian Aric Serrano plans to stay in small-market-Southern-Hell just long enough to grab a cup of coffee and put together a kick-ass “escape tape”. He’ll serve his one-year contract, then he’s taking off for a higher rung on the TV sports ladder—alone—the way he likes it. But when he walks into the newsroom and meets Heidi, he may have finally found something and someone worth committing to.
Heidi would be so much more comfortable if she could avoid her new co-worker—he’s just her type—the type she’s so careful to avoid. But that becomes impossible when she and Aric are forced to work together on the weekend news. Now there’s no denying the attraction between them, and she’ll have to decide between settling for the “good enough” life she already has or taking the risk of going for what she dreams of, an exciting career and a real love.

GUEST POST: Three Things that Drive Me Crazy – Laura Templeton
All my thoughts are hairs on a wild, wild boar, running slowly down a lilac slope. - Devendra Banhart
As I was thinking about a topic for this post, the lyric above, from a Devendra Banhart song, caught my attention. No, I’m not going to be talking about boars, interesting as that might be. Today I’d like to talk about thoughts. How they can be as wild and destructive as that runaway pig. Specifically, let’s look at three thoughts that drive me crazy. Maybe you can identify.
My _______ looks like crap. Fill in the blank with your own insecurities. Hair (big one for me), shoes, outfit, FB page, car, room… the list is endless. My latest failure in this department (a minor failure, though I assure you I have major ones) was nail polish. Hoping to replicate a pretty shade of pale blue I’d seen on a coworker’s nails, I bought a bottle I thought would work.
Now You Sea Me turned out to be a bright rendition of the blue-green waters of the Florida Gulf Coast. And on me, it needed a search and rescue. I admit it—I felt miserable all day. Just because my nails looked like crap. Like anyone really cared what my nails looked like. (Want to try Now You Sea Me? I’ll mail a bottle to the first person who comments and asks for it. Hopefully your thoughts about the aquatic nail color will be happy ones.)There’s no way I can get all this done. I have a full time, real job in the real world of business. Plus I write novels in my spare time. Sleep? I don’t get a lot of it these days. And sometimes when I lie down at night, my thoughts run pell-mell down that lilac slope, churning up clods of the many tasks I’ve left undone. #2 is a choral refrain threading through my day like the
Heartbreakers backing up Tom Petty, the Supremes supporting Diana Ross, the Pips… you get the picture. Only this chorus is off key, stressful, counterproductive. And guess what? Usually, despite the dire predictions of my personal Supremes, I do get it all done. What prompts there’s no way I can get all this done in your life? Final exams? Too many projects due at the same time? The holiday rush? (Yep, one of mine.)I can’t cope with this. Ever had this reaction? I don’t need this right now, I think. Which, translated, means I don’t need it at all. It’s some sort of mess I don’t want to deal with. I just want it to go away. On top of being super busy, my PC, with which I had a lovely 7-year relationship, decided to go into a death spiral that involved a column of dust shooting out of it and hitting the ceiling. (Okay, that to-do list the Supremes croon doesn’t include dusting.) I spent several weeks nursing the dying hunk of metal, grappling resistance all the while.
You. Will. Not. Die. And it didn’t. Completely. But I threw in the towel, and I’m now the proud owner of a new MacBook Pro. Good, in the form of a sleek, pomaceous (that’s your $1 word-of-the-day) laptop. Which I love. But it’s led to a new refrain of I can’t cope with this as I try to figure out how to use it. (Now, how do I close this window?)Variations of these three thoughts, hanging on to that runaway boar for dear life, have one thing in common. You got it. They’re all negative self-talk. And they all involve resistance to reality. Which is never a good place to be. But I’ve learned a trick. That boar? It can be tamed.
Penned up. Relocated. Your choice. (Just don’t shoot it, please! Violence is not condoned.) Successful people learn how to do this well. They “relocate the boar” by making sure their positive self talk outweighs the negative. Like a bank—life works best when you put in more than you take out. So, I remind myself frequently (and preferably while soaking in a nice bubble bath) — I WILL get it all done. I CAN cope with this. My _____ looks GREAT. And nail polish remover was invented for a reason.
How about you? What are some of your “boars” and how do you tame them?

INTERVIEW: Mindy McGinnis | NOT A DROP TO DRINK
There’s a kickbutt heroine, twists that keep you guessing, and a vision of a future that’s probably a little close for comfort. Basically, you won’t be able to put it down. I know I couldn’t. So it was especially exciting for me to be able to interview her! Hope you guys enjoy!
1. What’s your favorite scene in NOT A DROP TO DRINK? And why?
Any thing with Stebbs in it! He was so easy to write, and when he showed up the scenes flowed naturally. He gets reactions from people and reacts appropriately. He’s a godsend.
2. Your writing is so spare and tight. It fits Lynn’s voice perfectly. Do you see your style changing in future books? Or is this something that’s as much you as it is Lynn?
It’s definitely specific to the voice of the book. I have written other things in completely different styles. Hopefully people like all sides of me, when that time comes.
3. One of the things I loved best about NOT A DROP TO DRINK is how you captured the environment so perfectly. It’s beautiful, deadly, and very carefully rendered. In your Slightly-Less-Official Version, with Better Details Bio, you mention you “grew up in the woods.” Could you elaborate a bit more? Any personal experiences that led you to portray nature the way you do?
I did very much grow up in the woods. My family farms, and I grew up on a farm, but also with wooded areas around us that we owned. There was a period from 3rd grade to about 6th grade where I got home from school, and went straight into the woods. I had a fort that I “lived” in and made up stories about my amazing survival skills… then I went home to supper J
4. So many YA authors use, first person narrative that reviewers are starting to agitate.
Was the decision to write in third-person a conscious one? In one of your vlogs, you said NADTD “fell out” of you. Was this another by-product?
I let the story decide, always. I have other things that I’ve written in first, but DRINK was very much a 3rd person story. So no, it wasn’t a conscious decision, but rather something that did indeed, happen organically.
5. I know it’s a standalone, but…I’m really hoping for more. Can you give us any hints as to what’s coming up next for you?
It’s definitely a standalone in that all the storylines presented here are tied off and settled. No cliffhangers, no teases. However, we only explored a tiny corner of this bleak world…
