Peace in Flames by Caroline Andrus
Review of Peace in Flames, a novella, by Caroline Andrus
In light of the #MeToo movement and increaseing awareness of violence against women, Peace in Flames is a meaningful addition to the discussion, especially for the young teen set. I plan on giving my daughter this novella so we can discuss Valerie Todd’s experiences as detailed in this story. Valerie is a confident young lady who has grown up in the seemingly safe and somewhat dull town of Peace, Montana. She bemoans the fact that nothing exciting happens in Peace, until she notices a new boy, Liam Sloan. Liam is hot and has an endearingly bashful sort of charm. He is exactly the sort of boy you would want to “buy” a date with your daughter in the Homecoming date auction. Unfortunately, another young man has his eye on Valerie. He won’t accept “no” as an answer from her and he is willing to burn down Peace to get Liam out of the picture.
There are so many bad role models for teen relationships in literature today. Bella and Edward come immediately to mind, and then there’s Ana and Christian. I don’t know even what to say about them. The point is as a mother and an educator, I am concerned that the relationship role models we are giving our daughters and students are so unhealthy and unbalanced. Young girls need to understand that they can speak out against those who do not respect them or their boundaries without fear of being shamed. This is a lesson that Valerie learns as the story progresses. This is not to say that the story is moralistic or preachy. Liam and Valerie are charming together, but it does raise important issues that young women today should consider and discuss.

What I'm reading Ready Player One
My sister and coauthor Ruth has been asking me to read this book for months. It is one of her "landmark books." By landmark book, I refer to books that are important in your life, which deeply resonate for you. I dutifully put it on my request list at the library, but I am currently several months out on the waitlist. I am a huge science fiction fan, but for some reason, I was hesitant to jump on the bandwagon on this one. Finally, succumbing to pressure from Ruth, I downloaded it from our school district's Overdrive. OMG! I can't put it down. First of all, the eighties references are totally in my wheelhouse as well as the current technology connections. I can't wait to get home to read it again tonight. I'll keep you posted!
