FROM SAND AND ASH
PRE-ORDER ON AMAZON: E-BOOK | PAPERBACK | AUDIO

Italy, 1943—Germany occupies much of the country, placing the Jewish population in grave danger during World War II.
As children, Eva Rosselli and Angelo Bianco were raised like family but divided by circumstance and religion. As the years go by, the two find themselves falling in love. But the church calls to Angelo and, despite his deep feelings for Eva, he chooses the priesthood.
Now, more than a decade later, Angelo is a Catholic priest and Eva is a woman with nowhere to turn. With the Gestapo closing in, Angelo hides Eva within the walls of a convent, where Eva discovers she is just one of many Jews being sheltered by the Catholic Church.
But Eva can’t quietly hide, waiting for deliverance, while Angelo risks everything to keep her safe. With the world at war and so many in need, Angelo and Eva face trial after trial, choice after agonizing choice, until fate and fortune finally collide, leaving them with the most difficult decision of all.
A sweeping, epic story of love, war, and the resilience of the human spirit.

Sexism in The Bird and the Sword
SPOILER - DISCUSSION
In the last couple of days, I have had a few reviews complain about sexism in The Bird and the Sword. It has taken me by complete surprise, and I wanted to discuss this with my readers. PLEASE don't go looking for the reviews and comment on them or vote them down. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I simply want to discuss something with all of you.
1. The setting of The Bird and the Sword is a medieval fantasy world. In medieval times women were definitely not treated like equals. No doubt about it. In TBaTS, Lark faces some of these issues. She also can't speak, which makes her more vulnerable than other women in many regards. However, Lark is very headstrong and capable, and we see her constantly asserting herself, even when she has to find creative ways of communicating.
2. Tiras is an alpha male. He is a king. He is arrogant. He says things that would make a woman's eyes roll in this day and age. It is part of his character and indicative of the time and place in which he lives. However, he is the first one to recognize what Lark has to offer. He trusts her to help defeat the Volgar and takes her into battle with him. He wants to make her his queen because he believes she can protect the kingdom when he can't.
3. In order for a female to be strong, the men around her do not have to be weak. Lark saves the day several times in the book, but Tiras is equally brave and equally strong. They are an impressive match, and it is their esteem and love for each other as equals that makes their relationship so beautiful.
4. There is a growth arc in the story. Lark becomes stronger, more courageous, etc. She eventually finds her voice, and that is a big part of the plotline. Lark overcame a lot of injustices and prejudices, but most of them were the same injustices and prejudices that the male protagonist had to overcome as well.
5. I get so discouraged when women scream sexism when there is none. It makes the real problems women face seem manufactured. One reader went so far as to say these characters promote rape culture. I mean . . . seriously?
What think you? DISCUSS.

Just Try It.
"I don't read fantasy." I've heard that from 7 out of 10 of my most loyal readers. And yet . . . many of them have taken a chance on this new book of mine. So far it has the highest rating on Amazon of any book I've ever written, and the consensus has been shock and amazement. My readers who "don't like fantasy" are loving The Bird and the Sword! Hoorah! So . . . here's my challenge to you. Read it. If you don't like it, tell me about it OR return it for a full refund on Amazon. Pretty cool that you can do that, huh? Thanks for giving it a shot. I took a huge risk with this one, and I hope you'll take a little leap of faith with me.

Anniversary Edition
Two years ago, I published Making Faces on my 39th birthday. I thought it would flop. It had gotten mixed reviews from some of my early readers. It was the book that came AFTER the New York Times bestseller. The pressure was something I can't even describe and would have never anticipated. But I closed my eyes and hit publish, and I told myself failure was okay too.
And magic happened.
This book is now being published in the US, Canada, Germany, Italy, France, Turkey, Brazil, Denmark, Hungary, and Poland.
Dreams are good. But fear is too. Because dreams stay dreams if you don't face the fear.
I wanted to celebrate this book with a new cover, something that captured the book even BETTER than the original cover. What do you think?Making Faces

The Song of David Q & A
Hello Goodreads friends!
My recent release, The Song of David, has a lot of people coming to me with questions. I would love to answer them, but don't want to spoil the experience for someone who may stumble across your question in their feed. So here is a Q&A that I did a week or so ago for a group read. I really believe it covers all the questions that you might have. Enjoy!
