our world is just vibrations

What is light? It brings us information but is itself insubstantial. Sound is has no mass, or weight. Light and sound aren’t objects or material in themselves, only energy… motion… but they seem to be most of what our human experience is made of.

Someone or something that knew how to manipulate light and sound could alter our whole world without us ever knowing…

That feeling when you still have half the book left

One thing about audiobooks, is you can’t tell how far into the story you are while listening. A paper book, you can see the thickness of the pages in your hand. A kindle book has that little percentage on the bottom as you turn the pages. But an audiobook, who knows?

I’m still listening to My Name is Red, and I had thought that the narrative was drawing to a crescendo, and that the story would soon be over. Maybe it’s because I’m used to listening to books that are ~10 hours long, and I sort of felt this time approaching, but I actually am just reaching he halfway mark.

It’s a fun feeling to find out that a story you are enjoying is suddenly going to keep going for a lot longer than you thought!

Words go in, words go out, you can’t explain that

The more you read, the more you write. And perhaps, anyone who reads enough will eventually be unable to resist trying their hand at creating some of the words they love so much.

Read read read, fill your head with new words, and stories, and ideas, and feelings.

Read what you want to write. Read what you know nothing about. Read something old. Read something new. Read something you don’t think you’ll be interested in.

Then write!

Influx of ideas, and a contest

I’ve been having a lot of ideas lately, giving them a bit of polish, then storing them away for later. I don’t often have success with an idea when I write it too soon. Ideas need to age…

But now that I’ve got a few of them shelved and fermenting, maybe I can actually get some writing done instead of all this… thinking (not writing).

My next story is going to be for a pre-issue of the magazine I’m working with, Lucent Dreaming. So you can look forward to reading something from me there soon!

Also, we are having a short story contest, check it out if you’d like to enter

Missed deadlines

Welp. I broke my streak of a year + of blogging every day. No blog post on Sunday. Oops.

But missing a deadline is no reason to stop writing, on the contrary, it means you should write even more! All time is arbitrary, all the meaning we give it comes from within ourselves. So though you may have disappointed yourself by missing some goal, don’t give up!

All words written are a win.

Cauldron

I took this picture of the sunset. It makes me think of a lake of fire and smoke rising. I love when the sky is pink like that…

The angle

Things don’t always look like what they are… this picture could be an undersea growth, an abstract splatter painting, the shadows of some grasses, or a bare tree and blue sky. It all depends on how you present it, the angle at which you perceive it…

I try to keep this in mind when writing. There are many ways to describe each event or object or emotion. And I try to keep in mind the over all goal of what I’m writing when deciding how to describe something.

It’s a tree, btw, rotated.

Submitting again

I’ve had 4 submissions this year… and am still waiting on two of them, and will be sending out another one next week. Good to be getting back into it! I’m determined to get a couple more sales under my belt, it’s been way too long!

My stories have improved over the years, so I just need to write more of them. That’s part of my goals for this year, along with all the editing I need to do…

The key is to send them out, everywhere, constantly. I haven’t been doing that until recently, and thus… no sales. So I’m starting again, and will not stop! Since now I have the super power of being able to write two things at once, I am going to be sure I always have one or two stories out there waiting to be read by some editor.

It will work… eventually!

Hopefully you can read a new short story by me in a magazine soon!

A draft!!

I sent out my finished draft of The Observer to my writing group! Now, to await their ever useful feedback! It took a lot longer than I imagined to send it out, because every time I thought about doing it I would realize some other thing I wanted to change. I still have more things I want to add/change even now, but at some point, someone just needs to read the damn thing…

I wonder if that is a useful way to self edit… by imagining someone, or various specific people reading your work along with you…
