Is Print Journalism Down to Its Last 10 Years?

Do we need print on paper anymore?  After all, we can download books on Kindle, and most of us get our news mainly from the internet.  Recently, the executive in charge of the New York Times predicted that printed newspapers will be a thing of the past in 10 years. “I believe at least 10 […]

Cultural Pressure vs. Religious Liberty

The main threat to religious liberty today is not the government.  Rather, it is the culture.  In the United States, the law is not likely to restrict your religious beliefs or practices.  Rather, the restrictions will come from the cultural pressure to conform. So says David French in his essay This Is How Religious Liberty […]

George Herbert’s Poems as Lenten Devotions

J. R. Arner, back in 1994, put together a daily devotional series for Lent that is now online called LenTree for George Herbert. It consists of a poem from George Herbert, arguably our greatest Christian lyric poet, for each day of Lent. It starts here with the introductory poem “The Altar, ” followed by Herbert’s great poem […]

A Serious Call to Ban Pornography

Some of you may remember that in our predictions for 2018, I said that the “sexual counter-revolution”–that is, the reaction against the sexual mistreatment of women ignited by the #MeToo movement–would continue and that it would manifest itself in an “anti-pornography backlash.”  This is starting to happen. I blogged about Great Britain forcing free porn […]

The Lutheran artist, Carl Bloch

In looking for an illustration to go with yesterday’s post Transfigured, I came across a painting on the subject that I ended up using.  The artist was Carl Bloch, whom I subsequently learned was a 19th century Danish artist and a Lutheran.  A painter of landscapes and portraits, he is best known for his paintings […]

Gentry Liberals

America’s major cities are being transformed by “gentrification,” as affluent white people move in, bidding up property values so that minorities and working class citizens can no longer afford to live there.  Today, America’s three largest cities–New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago–are dominated politically by “gentry liberals,” as is the Democratic party as a whole. […]

Transfigured

Yesterday was the last and climactic Sunday of Epiphany, in which we contemplate the ultimate light-dawning revelation of Christ:  His transfiguration.  The veil was lifted for just a moment, and Peter, James, and John were given a glimpse of Jesus in the glory of His Godhood.  After this high point, He descends the mountain and […]

Mallory Millett’s Critique of Her Sister’s Feminism

Kate Millett, who died last year, has been called the Karl Marx–or even the Mao Tse Tung–of the Women’s Movement.  Her sister, Mallory, was present in the early days of the National Organization of Women (NOW), which her sister helped to found, but she became a Christian and a pro-life activist. I was put on […]

The Movie About the Apostle Paul

Yesterday we blogged about the upcoming film The Passion of the Christ:  Resurrection.  But that won’t be coming out until 2019 or 2020.  Another movie based on the Bible starring Jim Caviezel will be released March 28, just in time for Easter.  It’s entitled Paul:  The Apostle of Christ, and judging from the trailer, posted below, it […]
