Back to school–I mean, “possibility space”!

Daniel J. Flynn has written a book entitled Blue Collar Intellectuals: When the Enlightened and the Everyman Elevated America.  He writes about a time when “intellectuals” spoke to “the common man,” and how many in the demographic of “common man” (and woman) distinguished themselves as “intellectuals” in their own right.  He writes about blue collar [Read More...]

“We don’t have a strategy yet”

Karen DeYoung and Dan Balz of the Washington Post give a litany of everything that has been going wrong in our foreign policy lately and marvel at President Obama’s admission that “we don’t have a strategy yet.” From Karen DeYoung & Dan Balz, Obama sets his own pace in a world whirling with crises – [Read More...]

Why they cancelled “Longmire”

One of my favorite TV shows has been Longmire, an extremely well-done mystery series centering around a modern-day sheriff on the high plains of Wyoming.  It’s critically-acclaimed and one of the A&E Networks’ top-rated shows.  So the network is cancelling it.  The reason why–even though it is said that we are in a new “Golden [Read More...]

Vocation Day

Most people probably don’t know what they are celebrating on Labor Day–”something about Unions”–but we here at the Cranach blog have long sought to fill this holiday with meaning by turning it into a Christian feast commemorating the doctrine of vocation. The term, which just means “calling,” is about far more than a person’s job, [Read More...]

An evangelical pastor discovers vocation

We Lutherans don’t go in for “personal testimonies” very much, but after the jump is a “testimony” from a pastor who discovered the doctrine of vocation and tells about the difference that has meant in his ministry. From Tom Nelson, The Day I Confessed Pastoral Malpractice | TGC | The Gospel Coalition: I didn’t mean [Read More...]

The youth who stopped Pickett’s Charge

President Obama will reward the Congressional Medal of Honor to two  Viet Nam War vets, Sgt. Maj. Bennie G. Adkins and, posthumously, Specialist Donald P. Sloat (who jumped on a grenade to save three comrades). Also winning the nation’s highest honor posthumously is Lt. Alonzo Cushing, a 22-year-old who commanded an artillery battery that took [Read More...]

Nationalizing theology

Socialists often “nationalize” industries.  Totalitarian governments are interested in more than economics.  China has announced plans to nationalize Christian theology. From Lucinda Borkett-Jones, China’s plan to nationalise Christian theology | Christian News on Christian Today: The Chinese government is planning to introduce its own brand of Christian theology, the state-backed China Daily website reported last [Read More...]

Federal judge throws out ban on polygamy

A federal judge in Utah has ruled that the state’s law banning polygamy is unconstitutional.  If the ruling is upheld on appeal–and how could it not be?–that would have a big impact not only on radical Mormons but on American Muslims.  And, of course, anyone else who might like to try that lifestyle.  (Think there [Read More...]

Evangelizing the condemned Nazis

Last year almost to the day we blogged about  Rev. Henry Gerecke, the LCMS military chaplain who was pressed into service as the Protestant chaplain at Nuremberg, charged with ministering to the Nazi war criminals who were on trial there, many of whom were executed.  There is now  book out about Chaplain Gerecke:  Mission at [Read More...]
