Christian atheists

The BBC website has pages on the different kinds of religion, including “Christian atheism.”  Read the characteristics after the jump, and then I raise a question. From BBC – Religion – Atheism: Types – Christian Atheism: Non-realism (Christian Atheism) Christian Atheists want to remove what they see as the fairy tale elements of Christianity. They [Read More...]

So is Ted Cruz eligible or not?

Donald Trump is a “birther,” casting doubt on Barack Obama’s eligibility to be president, since the Constitution requires that the holders of that office be “natural-born citizens.”  Recently he has raised the issue about Ted Cruz, who was born in Canada of a Cuban father and an American mother.  Most observers have said that since [Read More...]

A true rock ‘n’ roll rebel

Rock ‘n’ roll icon David Bowie died of cancer at the age of 69.  He had the reputation as a rebel against pop culture conventions.  But perhaps you didn’t know just how rebellious he was. From Bridget Johnson, Why David Bowie Knelt and Said the Lord’s Prayer at Wembley Stadium | PJ Media: David Bowie, [Read More...]

Debate post-mortem

So, what’s your verdict on last night’s debate?  Any winners or losers?  Do you find your allegiances shifting?  Is Cruz stealing some of Trump’s thunder?  Who do you think is emerging as the mainstream Republican candidate? UPDATE:  I had said that last night’s debate would be the last before the voting starts, but that was [Read More...]

Liveblogging the GOP debate

This could get interesting.  Here is the dramatic context:  Trump and Cruz are running neck and neck in Iowa.  They will likely be attacking each other.  The other, more interesting, plot is that the Republican establishment despises both of those two, so the remaining candidates will be competing to get the mainline support.  Rubio has [Read More...]

Episcopal Church (USA) suspended from Anglican Communion!

American Episcopalians have been booted from the Anglican Communion for allowing same-sex marriage!  The conclave of world Anglicans meeting in Canterbury was expected to result in a schism, with perhaps the conservatives walking out.  But instead, the liberal Americans were suspended for three years, their participation reduced to “observer” status. From Sarah Eekhoff Zylstra, Episcopal [Read More...]

How Americans protect themselves from Christianity

Another brilliant analysis of the challenges facing American Christianity by James R. Rogers, Texas A&M Political Science professor and an LCMS layman.  This time he focuses on how and why Americans “armor” themselves from Christianity.  He analyzes how relativism works and quotes Allan Bloom on Americans’ “easy-going nihilism” and “nihilism without the abyss.”  He surveys [Read More...]

GOP debate tonight–without Rand Paul

The Republican presidential candidates will hold their final debate before the primary voting begins.  As is our custom, we’ll liveblog the proceedings.  Please join me here and chime in with your own comments. Rand Paul will not be there.  He did not make the cut for the main event and has refused to appear on [Read More...]

St. Louis Rams are moving to L.A.

The St. Louis Rams are moving to Los Angeles. The Oakland Raiders might also move to Los Angeles.  And if they don’t, the San Diego Chargers will.  L.A.’s two teams might even play in the same stadium! L.A. lost two teams in the 1990s–ironically, the Rams and the Raiders–but now will have two at the [Read More...]

Liberals, conservatives, & Lutheran-Catholic dialogue

Mathew (one “t”) Block, the communications manager for the Lutheran Church Canada (with which the LCMS is in fellowship) has an interesting post at First Things on the 50 years of Lutheran-Catholic dialogue.  He does so from the perspective of the International Lutheran Council (ILC), the organization of conservative Lutherans, which has started a dialogue [Read More...]
