Three Reasons Why You Should Read An American Girl in Italy by Aubrie Dionne
Today I’m thrilled to have Blue Ridge Literary Agency author Aubrie Dionne to talk about her latest release, An American Girl in Italy. Already wishing I was that girl!
Here are three reasons why you should read this book. Take it away, Aubrie!
~ ~ ~
When Sharon invited me to name three reasons why you should read my latest release, An American Girl in Italy, I had to think really hard. There were so many reasons why I wrote it: because I toured Italy with my orchestra in high school, because the first orchestra book, Playing the Maestro demanded a sequel, because of all those vineyard movies that stole my breath away. Remember A Walk in the Clouds? But, three reason why you should read it? This is what I came up with below:
#1. The descriptions of Italy. Italy is such a gorgeous place, and I used my memories from my tour to write this book. At eighteen, it was a life-changing adventure. The main character’s descriptions and reactions are a lot of my own, very real and very true. For instance, she thinks the Coliseum is “old and crumbly” which is exactly what I thought of it! There is a moment toward the end when she first sees the hero’s vineyard and realizes so much about him and how much she’s grown to love him. So, if you’ve never been to Italy, or want to revisit it, you should read this book.
#2. The music. Whether you enjoy classical music or not, in this book you get to experience how it feels to be in the orchestra. There is a moment towards the beginning when the main character plays her solo in one of her favorite pieces, and you get to feel her emotions as the music plays around her. This is also written from my experiences playing flute in orchestras.
#3. The Rivalry. My main character must perform an aria with an opera diva. Since the beginning of the book, they are at odds with one another, bickering over the tempo and the mood of the duet. But, when gorgeous Michelangelo comes between them then the sparks really fly. There is an exact moment when he kisses one girl in front of the other…a scene I had sooo much fun writing! You’ll have to read to find out!
Excerpt:
Fury broiling inside her, she whirled around. “I told you—”
A man who looked like he’d walked off a Giorgio Armani ad glowed before her, illuminated by the Italian sun shining through the glass windows behind him. Midnight hair rolled in waves around his ears, slicked back from his face with just the right amount of mousse. Thick, perfectly sculpted, dark eyebrows contrasted with smooth, olive skin. Blue eyes with a ring of amber around the center mesmerized her.
“Are you with the Easthampton Civic Symphony, signorina?”
He accented his words just like the cultured Italian men on the James Bond films she had watched growing up.
“Yes, I was just—” what was she doing? Carly’s voice trailed off.
“May I introduce myself? I am Michelangelo Ricci, your tour guide.”
Their tour guide? Carly’s stomach plummeted. She’d just made a bitchy fool of herself right in front of the man she’d have to spend the next two weeks with. Great. Or what do the Italians say? Bene.
Michelangelo stared at her with his beautiful blue-amber eyes in expectation. What did he want? Some sort of pat on the back? A kiss?
Stop daydreaming.
Carly blinked back to reality. “Yes?”
“And you are?”
“Oh. Carly Davis.”
He extended his hand. “Nice to meet you, Carly.”
She took his hand in hers and squeezed. He had a strong grip with rough calluses, maybe from working outside in the vineyard?
Boy, this guy was too good to be true. Which was why she should stay the hell away.
He released her hand politely, if not a little too soon for her taste. “Per favore, follow me. The tour bus is just beyond the doors.”
“I know that.” She grabbed her oboe case. Her long, floral bohemian skirt caught on her Birkenstock, and she tumbled face forward on top of her luggage. Her over-packed bag broke her fall, but it didn’t stave off a humbling wave of embarrassment.

Makeover Monday!
Some days the urge strikes out of nowhere. The bedspread you barely noticed for the past ten years seems drab. Imperfections on the sofa–thanks to pets or other spills–jump out at you each time you walk into the living room. Or the curtains featured on the Bed, Bath & Beyond flyer have your name written all over them. Whatever makes it happen, there are times your eyes simply want to look at something fresh and new.
Today is Makeover Monday, my blog’s fresh face. I’ll still be delivering my middle-aged musings, book features and a chance to chat about both the ordinary and the unordinary. I also added a category listing to the upper left column, if you simply want to look through books featured on this site, for example.
Future posts may even test unchartered waters. I figure the sky’s the limit on topics and you guys seem like you could use a surprise once in a while. Besides, who doesn’t like a surprise. Looks like the ladies in my blog’s new header do.
Happy Monday! What do you think?

How Do You Know When You’re Middle-aged?

May 1, 2014
Ma’am…This is the Men’s Room.
In the same manner a dowser has an innate ability to locate water, I can always find a public restroom. Which is good because wherever I go, I end up needing one. In case you’re thinking this is a middle-aged issue, it’s not. In my case, it’s more like a lifelong issue, although middle-age has given me more reasons to test my “search” skills.
During our travels in Italy a few years ago, my poor husband was amped out on caffeine because of my tenacious tinkle needs. “Bars” in Italy (where you can find coffee and sweet treats) usually have a bathroom, easily accessed if you order something. He’d order an espresso shot and I’d be at his side doing the “potty dance” and asking “Dov’è il bagno?” The server would point and I’d quickly scamper in that direction, all while Bill downed another caffeine-filled blast.
This restroom hunting has made me a bit of an unofficial authority on bathrooms across the globe and what I’ve learned is that it isn’t always clear which door a person should go through once the bathrooms are located. This “problem” isn’t restricted only to other countries, because it has happened to me in the US, too. And—for the record—about 90 percent of the time, it is clear to me. Yet there have been some memorable moments when they weren’t.
Like the time I vacationed in Germany and found myself facing two doors marked “Herron” and “Damen.” The second seemed a close match for the English slang “dame” but the other word DID NOT sound like anything masculine. I reached out to pull open the “Damen” handle when the door swung open and a man rushed out.
I reconsidered “Herron” but before I could even budge, a woman then exited the door marked “Damen.” Thoroughly confused, I listened to their nervous chatter just outside the marked doors. No, I don’t speak German, but through pantomime and expression I soon realized a woman was sick to her stomach behind the “Damen” door and the other two people were helping her. Note to restaurant: a universal sign would’ve saved me some grief.
In the US, some business owners get pretty clever. When I was around twenty years old, I went to a restaurant in upstate NY with a “horse stable” theme, a theme that continued to the bathrooms. Cute, right? It is if you know about horses. The restrooms were marked “Mares” and “Stallions.” Thanks to Rocky Balboa, “Italian Stallion” did narrow it down, however, I had always thought a mare was a male horse. Yeah, yeah, I KNOW the other one clearly said stallion. Point is, it STILL gave me a moment to pause. Maybe I over think things?
The worse restroom demarcation—by far—goes to an establishment I visited in Belgium this past fall. In fact, I’d probably still be standing their pondering the doors today if someone at my dinner table hadn’t given me fair warning about the door labels. They used the male/female symbols here.
Empowered by the right answer, I plowed into the correct room and waited for a stall to become free. Imagine my shock when a man, one of my fellow travelers who wasn’t sitting with my group, walked out of a stall.
He stopped, blinked a few times, then uttered, “Hi.”
“Hey.” Neither of us moved then I finally said, “You know, you’re in the wrong bathroom.”
He snorted. “Yeah, I know that now.”
I have one request for the interior decorators of the world…how about we keep it simple. Doesn’t this sign say it all?
Please tell me I’m not the only one who has these strange things happen to them. Pretty please…

Three Reasons Why You Should Read “Poplar Place” by Ellen Butler
Today I welcome Ellen Butler to discuss her recent release, Poplar Place. I’m excited to read this book because I enjoyed Ellen’s novella, Second Chance Christmas, so much. Ellen’s three reasons have me intrigued.
At the bottom of this post, Ellen has a giveaway–UP TO $100 IN LIA SOPHIA JEWELRY-WINNER’S CHOICE.
Thank you Sharon for hosting me at Musings From the Middle Ages. I’m so excited to share my new release Poplar Place with your readers. You asked me to share three moments from the book and state why I think this would make someone want to read your book. Boy, that was a tougher task than I expected. First, here’s a blurb about Poplar place.
Newly minted librarian, Cara Baker, effectively cuts ties with her tumultuous life in Pittsburgh, and moves to South Carolina where she embraces the peaceful, laid-back style of small town living. Everything seems to be falling into place when Cara finds the perfect house to round out her new plans. Well… perfect except for the immovable hermit living on the top floor. She throws caution to the wind, and buys the fabulous house—hermit and all—without meeting him. By wooing her reclusive renter with notes and mouthwatering meals, he caves and invites her up to the apartment. Preconceived notions are blown out of the water, when she finds Danny isn’t the nerdy Mr. Mole she envisioned. Unfortunately, FBI phone calls from her past bring Cara’s summer idle to an abrupt halt. Will demons from a former life destroy Cara’s tranquility?
Now, my three reasons why you should read Poplar Place…
1) In the first chapter our main character, Cara Baker, learns that the house she wants to purchase comes with a reclusive renter living in the apartment on the third floor, who never leaves the house and doesn’t see people. She’s sure she can get him removed if she purchases the house. However, something stays her impulse and she purchases the house, hermit and all. Now she needs to figure out a way to actually meet him.
2) Cara begins dating the local psychiatrist, one of the only people that her hermit renter sees in person. They get to talking about her renter and she’s able to glean a little more information. Like the fact that her backyard, a beautiful example of an English garden, was designed and planted by her tenant. So the recluse does leave the house, only he does it when no one is around. Perhaps there is more to this fellow than Cara originally thought.
3) After a wild girl’s night out, Cara returns home to find a message on her answering machine. It is from the FBI, and that can only mean one thing. Something from her past is rearing its ugly head. Now, Cara has to decide if she’ll return the calls, or stick her head in the sand and ignore them.
I hope these moments have whetted your reader’s appetites and leave them wanting to find out more. Thanks again for having me, and enjoy the excerpt from Poplar Place. One last thing… Book Groups – Visit my website, www.ellenbutler.net to find book club questions on Poplar Place. I’m available to be a guest author for book clubs as well. Poplar Place Excerpt:
I resigned myself to returning the FBI phone calls. I couldn’t put it off any longer. Both Bryant and Hutchins had left phone messages again yesterday, and their persistence made me nervous. Rolling out of bed, I shuffled downstairs to start the coffee, my liquid courage. I drank half a cup and dialed. Hutchins didn’t answer. I braced myself and dialed Special Agent Bryant.
“Bryant.”
“It’s Cara Baker.”
“Listen, I have some news. The U.S. Marshals have lost contact with Tony Rizolli.”
I paused to digest this.
“Cara?”
“You must be joking! How the hell did that happen?”
“His tracking anklet was cut, and he disappeared.”
“Do they think he’s been whacked?”
“They’re not sure.”
“Why are you calling me? You do realize I no longer work for the DA’s office.”
“Yes, we know that.”
Exasperated I asked, “Then why are you calling to tell me this? Not much I can do.”
“I’m concerned about your safety. Tony bore a lot of hostility toward you.”
“The FBI’s concerned, or you’re concerned?”
“I’m concerned.” He stated matter-of-factly.
“What does the FBI think?”
“The FBI thinks there’s a leak in the Marshals’ office and Rizolli’s six feet under.”
“Why does Tony have so much animosity toward me? He walked into a shiny new life provided by the American taxpayers.”
“The money.”
I took a moment, rubbing a hand across my eyes. “What does he know?”
“We’re not sure. I think one of the pencil pushers at the Marshals’ office told him about the Cayman accounts during relocation. There was very little legitimate money he could take into the program. He wasn’t happy about it.”
I sucked in a breath. “Agent Bryant….”
“Call me Tom.”
“Tom, what exactly are you worried about?”
“If Rizolli isn’t sleeping with the fish, he’s a loose cannon. I don’t trust him. You may be in danger.”
“And?”
“And you need to watch your back. Call me or Hutchins if you see anything suspicious. I mean anything out of the ordinary. If you see a strange car in the neighborhood, get the plates and call me.”
“I’ll take that under advisement, Agent Bryant. What about Denise?”
“She’s covered. I’ve called in some favors.”
“Fine. Please let me know if anything new develops.”

Three Reasons Why you Should Read The Golden Key Chronicles by AJ Nuest
Do you love romance, time travel, castles and handsome princes? I do. So I’m thrilled to feature AJ Nuest’s Golden Key Chronicles on “3 Reasons Why….” Since AJ’s cliff-hanger series has four installations, we’re bending the rules and hearing four reasons why you should read this exciting series. Take it away, AJ…
First, a blurb about the series…
Rowena’s Key Blurb: The key would unlock his future and the safety of his kingdom, but he never imagined the sorceress would unlock his heart… Antiques restorer, Rowena Lindstrom, finds herself the owner of an ancestral armoire containing a hidden key and a magic mirror leading to another realm. But the handsome warrior prince waiting on the other side is truly the final straw. This must be an elaborate joke, right? As she struggles to discover the truth, Rowena learns Prince Caedmon Austiere needs the key to save his kingdom. In the end, she cannot deny him anything. Including her heart.
4 Reasons Why You Should Read The Golden Key Chronicles:
#1 ~ Rowena’s Key, Book I This may just be me, but who wouldn’t want to be Rowena Lindstrom. She’s a successful business woman at the top of her game in the Chicago antiques world and, after her purchase of a beaten up old armoire, she finds a key hidden inside a secret compartment that is stamped with her initials! Add to this the appearance of magic mirror, the totally babealicious Caedmon Austiere—a half-blood gypsy prince from the 14th Century who believes she’s a goddess and is duty-bound to woo her—a mysterious prophecy and hilarious best friend, and Rowena is living every girls’ fairytale dream! For those of you still in love with the Disney princes of your youth, Rowena’s Key fits the bill!
#2 ~ Candra’s Freedom, Book II Ever wonder what it would be like to wield sharp knives or launch silver throwing stars with the accuracy of a lightning strike? How about training your very own falcon or taking down warriors twice your size by becoming an expert in Parkour? I have, and I got to live vicariously through Rowena as she does all these things and more in Candra’s Freedom. A sorceress by name and the very key to saving the Austiere Kingdom, she’s heralded as the first woman in history to earn her crest—a fight for freedom she’s not about to relinquish, even at the heated advances of the handsome Prince Caedmon. The all around GIRLS RULE kick butt-ery in Candra’s Freedom is a great reminder that women can be strong, determine and beautiful!
#3 ~ Caedmon’s Curse, Book III The plot thickens…as do the fantasy elements, the lore, the mystical creatures and the romance in Caedmon’s Curse. But don’t let that fool you. This book contains zero downtime—from the moment Caedmon and Rowena fight through their differences in the forest, to their time alone in the Cave of Tears, to their disguised infiltration of the enemy’s castle—and has been described as “Formula One fast with a very slick flow.” The scenes heat up and so do the deeds of the dastardly villains. Add the campfire story Caedmon tells Rowena, and this story is the perfect fantasy romance!
#4 ~ Braedric’s Bane, Book VI Old friends are reunited in the final installment of The Golden Key Chronicles and the truth behind Rowena’s place within Austiere prophecy is revealed. Yet the circumstances are much worse than she and Caedmon could have ever imagined. Enemies become friends, and the betrayal of those once believed as loyal family members come to a head on the battlefield. Epic fight scenes, the fulfillment of destiny and the desperate endeavor to trick a centuries-old wizard must all be faced. But the reason you should read this story is because of the steamy shower scene. LOL
The Golden Key Chronicles is written as a four-part fantasy romance series, with each installment ending in a cliffhanger. How do you feel about cliffhanger endings and do they affect your decision to purchase a book? AUTHOR BIO: I am a multi-published, award-winning author who lives in the middle of a cornfield in NW Indiana. My loving husband, two beautiful children and a bevy of spoiled pets have agreed to stay and, in exchange for three rations per day and laundry service, tolerate my lunacy. While I spend most days happily ensconced in crafting romance across a multitude of genres, an underground coup has been percolating. The dogs just informed me the cat is secretly vying for dictatorship.

3 Reasons Why You Should Read “Love and Other Games”
Raise your hand if you love watching the olympics (mine is raised)! This winter’s games had me glued to my TV. Which is why it’s such a fun treat to feature Love and Other Games, a collection of four sexy new adult stories centered around athletes competing in the Winter Games by Ana Blaze, Melinda Dozier, Aria Kane, and Kara Leigh Miller.
Author Melinda Dozier is here to give us three reasons why you should read this anthology. Welcome, Melinda. The startup shot has fired…take it away!
3 Reasons Why You Should Read Love and Other Games by Melinda Dozier
1) Missing the Winter Olympics already? Love and Other Games will put you right there again in the middle of everything. With four novellas based around the Games in a fictional town in Switzerland, you’ll read about athletes from several sports: hockey, snowboarding, aerial skiing, and ski jumping.
2) Still freezing from the Winter storms in your home? Love and Other Games will definitely warm you up! All four stories are full of hot kisses and winter Olympian escapades that will leave you steaming all over.
3) Want to find a new author to love? Love and Other Games will introduce you to four romance authors. Each author has their own style, but fit nicely together to create a whirlwind of fun, humor, love and … yeah, sex … in every story.
EXCERPT from “Trouble with Gold” by Melinda Dozier, one of the four novellas in the anthology.
In this scene, Nadia, the straight-laced Olympics volunteer, has to keep her eyes on the naughty US Snowboard team. Ty has other plans.
Ty held up a finger at his friends and pulled Nadia’s hand toward the bathroom. “We need to talk.”
When he shut the door, he pushed her against the wall and claimed her lips. His hands roamed up her sides and behind her, exploring the hollows of her back. She relinquished herself, abandoning all of her earlier uptightness – squealing at first, but then releasing herself, molding her body against his in the frenzy.
He finally pulled his lips away from her mouth, but leaned into her ear whispering, “I’ve been dreaming about touching you again.” His tongue caressed the bottom of her ear and then he sucked her earlobe, savoring in the taste. “For two nights now.”
She let out a little moan, but didn’t say anything in return, only stroking his chest through his shirt.
“Let me touch you.” His hands roamed to her front and up to undo her jacket zipper. He tugged down slowly and reached into the folds to be closer to her body. Touching, feeling, trying to – “Damn, what do you have on under there?” He placed his other hand against the wall and opened up her jacket wider.
A twinkle of amusement caught in her eyes. “It’s standard volunteer uniform.”
“They must think you’re all grannies or something. A vest, a turtleneck and a scarf. How am I supposed to feel you up?” He nipped her ear, her breath tickling his ear. Even with the granny garb, she turned him on more than anything.
She caressed her cheek against his own, breathing in and sighing out. “Although it sounds entertaining, we do need to get to lunch.”
He pulled the front of her shirt from her pants. “Just one look.”
Nadia swiped his hand away and re-tucked her shirt. “We can’t be late. I’m never late. Maybe later.”
“There’s no maybe about it.” His large hand took her face gently. “You. Me. Skin. Later.” He leaned in, kissed her soft lips, bit her bottom lip and pulled back.
The longing in her eyes met his, and for a second he knew he almost had her. But in the next instant, she moved out of his grasp and tightened her belt. “I have a job to do.”
Ty reached over and slapped her butt. “I do too, Lucky Lady. You.” He stood up straight and walked out of the bathroom. “Okay, come on, dipwads. We have lunch and an interview to attend to.”
Blurb & Buy Links:

Everyone knows Erik Andresen’s best shot at an individual medal was back in 2010, before an injury pulled him from the competition. He’s there for his team, but a hot night and a remarkable final training session have him wondering if a gorgeous good-luck charm could give him another chance at the podium. With a little bit of luck, these two might have a shot at something worth more than gold.

A professional performance could help her land her dream job at Olympics Committee Headquarters, but her new assignment supervising the rambunctious US Snowboarding Team is making that difficult.

The Girl Behind the Gold by Aria Kane
Greek aerial skier Lia Milonas’s parents are about to lose the family farm. Saving it means medaling and landing a huge sponsor. While her no-nonsense attitude has her well on her way to a medal, it hasn’t won her a place in fans’ hearts.
“Come back with a story that will make readers cry, or don’t come back.” This is what Brandon James’ boss told him before he left New York to cover the Winter Games for Moment Magazine. With a wink and a smile, he can charm his way into any invite-only party, but that career-making story is nowhere to be found – until he meets Lia.
The two strike a deal that should get them both what they want – but neither would have guessed they’d also find what they need.

Ice Gold by Kara Leigh Miller
Colton Campbell thrives on the fast paced, adrenaline rushed lifestyle of being an Olympic hockey player. Despite Brenna Jessup’s abhorrence for the games and the athletes, she’s hand-picked as the official photographer for the U.S. Olympic Hockey Team. When a faux pas by Brenna almost costs Colton his career, she owes him. Too bad for her, Colton doesn’t want apologies — he wants retribution! And he knows just how to get it — and her — in the process.
