For The Love Of Music

One of the things I seem to write a lot about is the power of music, of how it can draw so many emotions from us on so many levels.

A couple of weeks ago, a friend played me this song. I'd never heard it before, despite having parents who are fans of the Beatles. A quick search of Google turns up that the song was never released as a single and became part of the White Album.

The song moved me so much that, a week later, I had this done.

Isn't it crazy how chords and words can push us to the edge and pull us back again? Isn't it crazy how something, by someone we've never met, can speak to us on so many levels?

Those few words spoke to something deep inside of me. Reminded me of the person I once was, the person I am now, and the person I'm going to be. They reminded me, much like the one on my back, that things can change, and for the better.

Some people say that they don't enjoy music, that they don't "get it". Coming from a family where there's been nothing but music, those statements are confusing, especially once you realise that the human body was designed to react to certain strings of notes. How amazing is that?! You were built to be in love with music. You were built to dance and sing and love and create. You were built to carry on what so many others before you have already done.

The same friend sent me this song. Every time I hear it, it makes me cry. I won't be getting it tattooed any time soon, but, like so many other songs, it will be one which stays with me forever.

Selling Mars Book Launch - 27th April 2013

I try and write here at least once a week, so I apologise for my absence. The past few weeks have been extremely busy. Last weekend, 27th April, was the launch for Selling Mars. And boy, did we have fun! The venue was part of Leicester's old gasworks, all sloping wooden floors and high, vaulted ceilings. Two bands were kind enough to cross the borders from Birmingham to Leicestershire and play for us.

The first, the amazing Crimson Clocks, played us a gorgeous set, ranging from their own pieces, to the introduction to Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds (which is one of my favourite albums!). They don't fit in to any particular genre of music, so I'm not even going to try! Just go and listen, and you'll see for yourselves!

Next up were the incredible Birthrite who really did bring the house down. Lots of laughing, lots of great songs, and one extremely tough crowd (We'd prefer to sit there and nod along in Leicester. We're not big dancers!), they did get us all up dancing. Absolutely brilliant performances from both bands!

I did, at much insistence, do a reading.

And then got down to the most important part of the evening. Chilling out!

You can see more of the night's photos here. Thank you so much to everyone who came! It was great to see you! And if we didn't see you that night, hopefully we'll see you at another soon. :)

To Boston With Love

So many words have been written in the wake of the tragedy of the Boston Marathon bombings. In fact, I don't think I can add anything to it, except to express my deepest sympathies to those who've been affected by such a horrific event. As of writing, we don't know who did, nor why they did it. All I hope is that whoever did cause such pain and chaos is caught and brought to justice very quickly.

I do want to say something though, and it's something that many people across the globe express on a daily basis.

The world needs Love.

Lots and lots of love.

It doesn't matter how. It doesn't matter what. As long as love's being put out things will begin to change. People may laugh. They may scorn but it's true. Love can change everything. Even a smile can change someone's day. Heck, it can change someone's life. No one knows what anyone else is going through. Someone could be going through the worst day of their life and something as simple as a smile could change it all. It could save their life.

Love, love, love. We need more of it! The world needs more of it! Love's good so pass it on!

Reality Bites

In the latter half of 2012, I had an email from the extremely cool Wiz Green. Would I be willing to write a biographical piece about my rise from drug addict on the verge of needing a liver transplant to the Queen of Steam (a friend's words, not mine!)?

It took me about 2.5 seconds to say yes and hit the reply button

This week sees the launch of that book, a collection of stories from various authors who've been through something and managed, against all adversity, to rise through it.

Writing the piece was amazingly cathartic and a chance for me to gather my thoughts of that period of my life. As you know, I have no qualms about talking about my addictions. If I can stop even one person from making the same mistakes that I did, then my work is done. If I can help one person realise that there's life outside of that cycle, then I'm happy. And if there's anyone reading this blog who needs someone to listen to, then just drop me a line. I promise not to judge. Just to listen and to offer a shoulder. I know what it's like. I've been in that place where no one would listen. I've had the times when people believe you can just snap out of it. And it's not pleasant. In fact, it's pretty damn horrific. It can be crushing and soul destroying. It can take away your passion and your drive. It can push you to the brink.

If you want to join in the launch, you're more than welcome to. It's being held online and is free to come and join. It's this Saturday, so get yourselves signed up and I'll see you there!

Thanks Dad!

Thanks to my Dad I now have a list of unenviable (or enviable, depending on your point of view!) skills. I can

- Temporarily fix an extractor using a match stick.
- Re-pressurise a household boiler.
- Wire a plug.
- Hang a picture properly.
- Change a fuse.
- Disengage the electrics to different parts of the house (easier these days, thank goodness).
- Change any kind of light bulb.
- Change the oil in a heating system (haven't done that one for a few years, thankfully. It was messy!).
- Fix pretty much any computer/printer/fax machine/photocopier/gadget
- Calibrate new gadgets.
- Mend the hole punch.
- Unjam the stapler.
- Stop the paper guillotine from squeaking.
- At a push, I can probably fix your car engine as well.

It was something which was brought to my attention recently at the day job. We rely a lot on modern technology and, yet, very few people seem to have the know how on how to fix the most minor of faults. Take our photocopier for example. When something goes wrong with it, it flashes up a message saying exactly what's wrong and how to fix it. Yet very few people follow what are seemingly simple instructions, often leaving it and hoping that someone else fixes it. It's the same with our outdated fax machine. It often doesn't dial out. The good old switching it on and off tends to fix it. I couldn't believe it when, several months ago, someone asked me to show them how to use a photocopier. While we have a maintenance man at the day job, when he's away on holiday fixing minor problems tends to fall to one person.

Me.

And you know what? I don't mind! I love it! It's a challenge, a break from my normal job, and a chance to put my brain to good use. I enjoy going digging through the tool box looking for whatever I might need. The most recent call was to hang a fallen curtain pole and, if I'd been able to find the wall plugs, I'd have done it. That was my first failure but we live and learn.

Those little skills we all have are amazing and you never know when you're going to need them. It's incredible how often they can be used!

If There's A New Way

Things speak to us. It may be music, a book, a film, something someone says to us, nature. Everything has the power to lift us up or destroy us.

I've been through a lot of tough periods in my life. I've debated suicide several times. I've gotten as far as planning it a couple of times. I went through a lot of crap as a teenager and I'm thankful that there were people there who helped me get through those rough times.

I'll never forget one of them playing me a song. They'll probably never know the impact it had on my life, but it turned me in to a diehard fan of the band. Known for its rumbling bass line, Megadeth's "Peace Sells" spoke to me on a level I'll never understand. As I sat there, facing the prospect of my own demise, facing telling people I was going, one line stood out and told me to stop.

"If there's a new way, I'll be the first in line. But it better work this time."

The song, to me, is pretty much Dave Mustaine's letter to a world which doesn't want to accept him. It's his way of telling them that he's not going to conform to their ideals or their models. That he's not going to live within their expectations and that this life's his for the making.

For me, it was a song which spoke about my own life. Never have I wanted to fit in with what's deemed "normal". Never have I found myself able to and it's what pushed me close to the brink so many times. Trying to fit in with the ideals of those around me, my family, my friends, my work colleagues. And it took a song for me to realise that I don't have to be like everyone else, that I don't have to live the rat race. Slowly, but surely, I'm getting there. Slowly, but surely, I'm becoming the person I've always wanted to be. It's been a long process, but now I realise that I don't have to be a round peg trying to fit in to a square hole.

The above quoted line is now my motto although I drop the "But it better work this time". For me, it has negative connotations, the idea that whatever I'm trying isn't going to work. I can make it work, but it'll take blood, sweat, and tears.

There's a veiled reference to the song in "Mars on the Rise", a subtle thank you to the band. If you've spotted it, let me know! Drop me an email or a comment, and tell me.

But never give up. Never let go of who you want to be or what you want to do. Don't let people get you down. Don't let them dictate to you. Don't let the darkness take over and ruin your life. You can be whoever you want to be.

Autobots, Roll Out!

I've been a bit ill for the past few weeks which is why I've been pretty quiet. So it's a nice easy one today. In keeping in line with the crazy engineering, I thought I'd introduce you to the world's only working Transformer. Not quite as cool as the Autobots and Decepticons, it's still a great, and fascinating, piece of kit (and it was used in the first of the recent Transformers films).

The Bell-Boeing V22 Osprey is a tiltrotor aircraft capable of both vertical take off and landing (VTOL) and short take off and landing (STOL). Originally produced in 1988, there are now 160 in use by the United States Marines and Airforce.

So what makes it so special? And why do they call it a Transformer? Take a look!

Rae's Catastic Collection of Videos

Okay, a couple of weeks ago I asked people for their favourite cat videos. And this is why! In no particular order, here's a selection of my favourite cat videos. Enjoy!

(For those who aren't in the know, Professor Meowingtons and Miss Nyan Cat own electronica artist Deadmau5. Yep, the irony's lost on no one!)

Inspirational Interview 4 - Kitty

Hi Kitty!
Thanks for agreeing to talk to me. It's great to have you here!

First off, tell us a little about yourself.
You know Rae, this is usually the hardest question of all, so where to begin. I’m a 40 year old mother of a beautiful 12 year old daughter, and married to a good man. We are animal lovers and belong to 2 Chihuahua’s, 3 Cats, and 3 Ferrets. We often find ourselves rehabilitating wildlife when we can and are currently looking to buy our first home. I recently graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business and Marketing in August of 2012 and now run a very successful publishing business known as GMTA Publishing. This year we have just started our imprints and intend to unveil the sites for those very soon!
You run publishing house Great Minds Think Aloud. How did come to get up GMTA, and what was the inspiration behind it? Were there any frustrations along the way, if so how did you overcome them? What's the best thing about running a publishing house?
Well Great Minds Think Aloud actually began two years ago as a book club/review hub. I began to make a lot of friends both publisher and author as well as many others and found out just how much talent was out there waiting for someone to come along and publish their books. For a year I learned as much as I could about the business and began gathering thoughts and ideas and all the information I could find. Early January of 2012 I decided I may as well jump in with both feet. I began to publish and the start was very bumpy. Starting any business involves a lot of trial and error, staying up all hours of the night (which I still do) and working HARD.
This year it seems I have learned a lot, gone through many changes and cultivated GMTA into a serious publishing business. We are very picky about the manuscripts we accept, more-so than we were in the beginning. We have a strict policy in place for submissions and we have obtained the services of some excellent editors that we recommend to authors that do not have their own. GMTA has become a business that is more about quality than quantity and we intend to remain that way. After an overwhelming response that started at the beginning of the year we have actually now closed submissions until July or at least we plan to open them back up in July given that we catch up with what we already have.
All in all GMTA is doing really well and we have a feeling that 2013 will be our year to shine! The best thing about running a publishing house is meeting some amazingly talented writers. I also enjoy the fact that I get to meet them personally. We don’t operate like many publishing houses that make their authors submit through an agent, instead we allow authors to submit directly to us and I think that makes a huge difference.
What are your hopes and dreams for GMTA? What kinds of books do you publish? My hopes and dreams for GMTA is that we will grow to be supremely successful. I want to make ‘the big six’ into ‘the big seven’ I would love to either become an imprint of one of the larger corporate conglomerates of to become a corporate conglomerate ourselves! As for books we publish almost every genre save memoirs and poetry.

You do a heck of a lot of work! I'm always seeing you online and am constantly inspired by how much you do. How do you keep yourself going? What inspires you? A lot of people use this opportunity to throw in a long speech about their love of coffee and though I do love it, that isn’t what keeps me going. What keeps me going is the genuine love I have for literature and the undying need to produce a book that people will enjoy. I intend to work hard for all my authors and that is why you see me on all hours of the night plugging away with promoting our books and trying to make sure that every single person on all social networks see what we’re doing. I want our authors to succeed and be happy in their experience with us and I want them to know that I will always work hard for each and every one of them no matter if it means me staying up until all hours of the night and morning and some of the next night as well! Lol
What would your advice be to anyone who wants to start their own business? Do it! First and foremost you have to bit the bullet, jump in with both feet and no matter how high the water gets doggy paddle like hell! In fact it’s a good idea to have some water-wings as well just in case. It’s not easy, I will definitely never say that but it takes tons of dedication, a true love for what you do, and it takes discipline, and above all patience. You have to work hard to create anything worth-while, but if you try hard enough you can succeed. No dream is unattainable and no goal too high!
As we know, there are millions of authors out there, some of who will be reading this. What advice would you give to authors who are looking to submit their work to a publisher? What advice would you give them once they've been published? Let these readers know you are here and you’re not going away until they read your book and give that feedback good or bad! One thing you should always, always remember as well, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and even when it was done there were people that didn’t like it. You’ll always find your critics, and they will, at times, be harsh but even Tolkien had his critics, so did C.S. Lewis, George R.R. Martin, some of the greatest and most amazing authors in the world had their critics for as far back as we can remember so don’t let that get you upset. There are worse things in life than someone telling you that your book is no good. Trust me, you’ll have just as many or more telling you that it is GREAT and… remember too, opinions are like… well you know the saying.
The world is a dark place right now. If you could address a global audience, what message would you give to the world? I would tell them that it is time to pull together. You’re right Rae it is a dark world and there are some very bad people out there but if the good ones don’t start doing something about it it’s only going to get worse. Our planet is in serious trouble in more ways than one. From the bad economy, to the pollution problems, to the problems with society as a whole, it’s not getting any better and it can’t until we start fighting back. Until we learn to stand as a unit regardless of race, creed, or religion, there’s no hope for anyone. The key to that is to get rid of the hatred, be kind to your fellow man and try to live life as you should, treat everyone with the respect and dignity they deserve.
Finally, where can we find you online? Everywhere! Literally that’s almost true. If you Google GMTA you are likely to find something on us somewhere. But if you really want to find us here are some sites that may interest you and we’ll have others up soon:
