Whitney Johnson — Tools to Thrive During Disruption

Whitney Johnson and Richie Norton on London at Thinkers50, November 2019.Whitney Johnson — Tools to Thrive During DisruptionS1 E33: Whitney Johnson — Tools to Thrive During Disruption

To fear or create. Richie Norton interviews world-renowned expert Whitney Johnson about tools to thrive during disruption. Whitney recently, writes, “But as novel as the novel coronavirus is, there is nothing new about trouble and challenge. I think when we succumb to fear and the paralysis or overreaction that it can stimulate, we are more likely to abandon the ship than to have it simply sink on its own.” Whitney Johnson explains,”Resources are meant to be used. Let’s keep the resources circulating and at work. Let’s keep living. Invest in the future. It will affect everything we do and are. And our children. Our children’s children. There will be opportunities for new growth; if we look for those and embrace the constraints (can’t travel, must telecommute, lost half the budget, have to start again in a new place or start a new business, etc.) we will emerge from this perhaps historic moment better prepared for the challenges of the future. Which will come.Innovation is the happy fruit of the resourcefulness demanded by hard times.”   Whitney Johnson is the CEO of WLJ Advisors and one of the 50 leading business thinkers in the world as named by Thinkers50. She is an expert on helping high-growth organizations develop high-growth individuals. Whitney is an award-winning author, world-class keynote speaker, frequent lecturer for Harvard Business School’s Corporate Learning and an executive coach and advisor to CEOs. She is a popular contributor to the Harvard Business Review, has 1.7 million followers on LinkedIn, where she was selected as a Top Voice in 2018, and her course on Fundamentals of Entrepreneurship has been viewed more than 1 million times. In 2019, she was ranked #3 on the Global Gurus’ Top 30 Organizational Culture Professionals. In 2017, she was selected from more than 16,000 candidates as a “Top 15 Coach” by Dr. Marshall Goldsmith. An innovation and disruption theorist, she is the author of the bestselling Build an “A” Team: Play To Their Strengths and Lead Them Up the Learning Curve, and the critically-acclaimed Disrupt Yourself: Putting the Power of Disruptive Innovation to Work.  In these books, she codifies her frameworks for developing high-growth individuals and organizations – the Personal Disruption and the S Curve of Learning frameworks. Whitney was the cofounder of the Disruptive Innovation Fund with Harvard Business School’s Clayton Christensen, through which they invested in and led the $8 million seed round for South Korea’s Coupang, currently valued at more than $9 billion. She was involved in fund formation, capital raising, and the development of the fund’s strategy. As a former award-winning Wall Street stock analyst, Whitney understands momentum and growth. She was an Institutional Investor–ranked equity research analyst for eight consecutive years and was rated by StarMine as a superior stock picker. Whitney hosts the weekly Disrupt Yourself podcast, publishes a popular weekly newsletter, and she is married with two children. The interview takes place on March 16, 2020 just as the USA wakes up to the impacts and implications of COVID-19 and social distancing becomes the new normal. Gathering places like restaurants and event are closed down. The nation is being asked to not meet in groups larger than 10. Major cities worldwide are shutting doors, countries shutting borders and the future is unknown. COVID-19 carriers are rarely speaking up. The world fears contracting the Coronavirus and little is known about what to do if you do.

What is an Aftercast and a Solocast?

Every Interview is followed by what I call an Aftercast and a Solocast. So. each episode becomes a three-part training. These mini-trilogy trainings can be listened independently. I’ve included the Aftercast and Solocast for those looking to create significant, meaningful life and business transformations.

All improvement is self-improvement.

I invented / coined the term “aftercast” to mean an in-depth, post-show review of the interview show I do with my guests to serve my listeners as mini-training for greater implementation. An aftercast is a reward for action-takers interested in the topic(s) my guest. My aftercast podcast draws primarily from my guest’s content as the subject material for life and business lessons.

The solocast piece in this three-part scenario is the last episode in the podcast training trilogy. In a solocast, I teach my listeners entrepreneurship, life lessons and more drawing primarily from my own teachings, philosophies, experiences and works around the topics discussed with my guests.

If you listen to all three parts in what I call a podcast stack or podcast stacking, you will 1) learn from an expert in an interview format, 2) take a deep dive into the expert’s content as if it were a high-level training or masterclass on subject-matter strategy, and 3) learn additional ways to from me on how I implement the information and you can to as a practical, hands-on approach.

Strategy is in the head. Tactics are in the hands. Results are in the heart.

The Richie Norton Show podcast stacks are similar to the stuff trainers sell for a lot of money because they are valuable. I know because I do sell this stuff, my clients sell this stuff and we buy this stuff. It’s that good. Hope you enjoy this free content…free is a fast way to spread a message but my fear is that you won’t take it for the value it can provide. I hope the effort to listen will help you learn, launch and live for the better–whatever that looks like for you.

Dream big and act on the small things.

How Casey Caught Coronavirus and What To Do About It — COVID-19 Infected Casey Garland in Quarantine Shares All

This interview will open your eyes to the unseen world that is the COVID-19 pandemic. Richie Norton interviews Casey Garland who is patient #6 in Salt Lake City, Utah and in quarantine. I was introduced to Casey from a mutual friend Britton Winterose. I asked Casey for his bio: “Casey Garland–29 years old, otherwise super healthy dude who works in software localization. I contracted the virus in Vail, CO (which is now completely shut down). Living with my wife and 2 year old who have almost certainly caught the virus as well.” The interview takes place on March 16, 2020 just as the USA wakes up to the impacts and implications of COVID-19 and social distancing becomes the new normal. Casey, however, is an open book. Richie asks unusual questions to get unique insights into what happens when you get the Coronavirus, how to confirm if you have it or not, what to do, what not to do and what it feels like. Learn what life is like in self-quarantine for Casey with his family who have now also likely been infected. Learn why they’ve been asked to stay home (instead of having COVID-19 confirmed by a doctor) and how 14-day quarantines stack on 14-day quarantines as the rest of the family gets sick. Casey’s answers may shock you (or not) and this interview will open your eyes to the unseen world that is the COVID-19 pandemic.

S1 E27: How to Give Advice Effectively

Apple Podcasts Spotify Google Podcasts

#27 MICHAEL BUNGAY STANIER AFTERCAST MINI-TRAINING:

Michael Bungay Stanier says, “This is why, in a nutshell, advice is overrated. I can tell you something, and it’s got a limited chance of making its way into your brain’s hippocampus, the region that encodes memory. If I can ask you a question and you generate the answer yourself, the odds increase substantially.”

Learn how to avoid giving advice on repeat and living on repeat.

People who live on repeat are a broken record. Let me say that again. :-) If your life is on repeat, it means you’re a broken record. Learn how to provide newness by experiencing newness through priming, listening, and creative customized coaching. Discover how to help people come up with their own framework so they can own the solution and implement the solution with excellence.

S1 E28: Use the Humble Power Alternative Now

Apple Podcasts Spotify Google Podcasts

#28 RICHIE NORTON SOLOCAST MINI-TRAINING:

Empathy, mindfulness and humility. What’s the humble power alternative? In my consulting work, I meet many people who have spent years agonizing over something they’ve always wished they could do. People always have some thoughts of doing a personal or professional project — like write a book, lose weight, start a business or join a different social group — but they’re stuck. They’re too prideful to allow themselves the chance of looking silly amongst their peers. Yes, in fact, in many ways pride is a form of fear.

The Protestant work ethic comes into play here in the West. Prideful people seek attention in shadows with envy. Humble people get attention because others shine the light on them as good examples of behavior. By definition, the ego is the consciousness of your self-identity. In other words, ego is who you think you are. Discover how to see the signs of pride creep. It takes personal humility to keep ego in check so your strengths don’t become weaknesses. To be humble is to be teachable.

Take your learning and apply it to something valuable. Share the love to fill the needs of others. If anyone calls you names, remember, they are looking at their own reflection and probably hate themselves. Love them anyways cause “haters gonna hate.” Protect your talent and value-add to the world by taking personal inventory of your thoughts from time-to-time and see if pride is creeping in. If pride’s creeping in, “creep” it back out with a dash of humility so you can start something stupidly important.

#25 RICHIE NORTON SOLOCAST MINI-TRAINING: Sirah said,

“Everybody coming into our lives is a lesson.”

In this podcast, Richie provides breadth to the depth of your life, your experience and future so you can better learn from every person and every experience (past and present). If you want to experience the depth of life, it’s not going to happen by digging deeper. The depth of life is found in the breadth of living.

Each time throughout history that a new era of rapid advancement happens, the key players to the progress and the winners in this economy have a breadth of experience. Yes, depth is important. Depth gets context when breadth gets attention.

The old adage “jack of all trades, master of none” doesn’t make sense today. In fact, in the 21st Century, if you’re a master of one, you’re a master of none. Why? The world changes so fast that the thing you mastered becomes irrelevant overnight or is automated.

Life-Experience is the New Work-Experience (Breadth > Depth). Discover depth and breadth lessons through self-concept clarity — a clearer sense of self. The more you learn, the more creative you become IF you apply breadth to your depth. Your experience matters. Use it well.

This podcast ends with a great question: How did you do it? The answer is profound, but shouldn’t surprise you if you listened to this three-part podcast stack including the Interview with Action Jacquelyn and the Action Aftercast deep dive that came right before this one.

Thanks for being cool!

 Introversion is not shyness.

S1 E17: Susan Cain — Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking

Introversion is not shyness. You can be a shy extrovert or an introvert who is not shy. “Don’t think of introversion as something that needs to be cured.” What about the Western Extroversion Ideal? The omnipresent belief that the ideal self is gregarious, alpha and comfortable in the spotlight” has pitfalls. What about extroverts who claim to be introverts? Discover the power of Quiet personally, professionally and in parenting.

Apple Podcasts Spotify Google Podcasts

Erase from your vocabulary, “Now, I want to be someone else” and discover the power of quiet. Includes strategies for parents, children, teachers, in the office, at home and personally. What about introverted parenting? What if you have children with two kinds of children (introvert, extrovert)?
How do you best parent them with the chill time or attention needed? Clue: Don’t overprotect them, honor who they are. As Susan Cain says on this podcast, “Introverted kids have a longer runway that they have to travel before they take off and fly…you want to be with them on that runway…and they need to know from you that you really love who they are on that runway with them.”

Get ready to spend your time the way you like and not the way you think you’re ‘supposed to.’ Stop denying your own reality of how you want to spend your time and step into your True North of what you’d like to be doing if you could.

#19. RICHIE NORTON SOLOCAST MINI-TRAINING: Richie goes solo and shares with you stories with tactics you can implement by using the power of core projects to increase your happiness, productivity and flourishing. Susan Cain said,

“According to Free Trait Theory, we are born and culturally endowed with certain personality traits—introversion, for example—but we can and do act out of character in the service of ‘core personal projects.’ In other words, introverts are capable of acting like extroverts for the sake of work they consider important, people they love, or anything they value highly. Free Trait Theory explains why an introvert might throw his extroverted wife a surprise party or join the PTA at his daughter’s school. It explains how it’s possible for an extroverted scientist to behave with reserve in her laboratory, for an agreeable person to act hard-nosed during a business negotiation, and for a cantankerous uncle to treat his niece tenderly when he takes her out for ice cream.”

Richie shares with you his own personal project concepts, why he frames them the way he does, how to create language around ideas so they become successful projects and how you can too.

Drawing from his best-selling books (including Real Artists Don’t Starve, The Art of Work, You Are a Writer) and expansive experience as an author, entrepreneur, artist and coach, Jeff “dismantles the myth that being creative is a hindrance to success by revealing how an artistic temperament is in fact a competitive advantage.

Apple PodcastsSpotifyGoogle Podcasts

For centuries, the myth of the starving artist has dominated our culture, seeping into the minds of creative people and stifling their pursuits.” Richie Norton and Jeff Goins share interesting stories with each other to help people understand how to thrive in pursuing their craft and living dreams through practical, timeless strategies, principles and tactics. This is a powerful podcast around inspiration, courage and business for creatives.

About Jeff Goins: His award-winning blog Goinswriter.com is visited by millions of people every year. Through his online courses, events, and coaching programs, he helps thousands of writers succeed every year. Jeff lives with his family just outside of Nashville, where he makes the world’s best guacamole.Real Artists Don’t Starve is a Wall Street Journal bestseller. “Through inspiring anecdotes of successful creatives both past and present, Goins shows that living by these rules is not only doable but it’s also a fulfilling way to thrive.

“From graphic designers and writers to artists and business professionals, creatives already know that no one is born an artist. Goins’ revolutionary rules celebrate the process of becoming an artist, a person who utilizes the imagination in fundamental ways. He reminds creatives that business and art are not mutually exclusive pursuits. In fact, success in business and in life flow from a healthy exercise of creativity.

Expanding upon the groundbreaking work in his previous bestseller The Art of Work, Goins explores the tension every creative person and organization faces in an effort to blend the inspired life with a practical path to success. Being creative isn’t a disadvantage for success; rather, it is a powerful tool to be harnessed.”

One.Day.At.A.Time.
