Christmas Reading

While going over final edits this weekend for What to Expect, I took a break to re-visit Lee Bermejo’s truly wonderful Batman: Noel. It’s a really, really wonderful graphic novel telling the Dickens’ Christmas Carol, only with Batman.

As Scrooge.

I know how that sounds, but it’s just fantastic. And Bermejo’s art is mind-blowing. It’s the most beautiful comic art I’ve ever seen.

Just go ahead and treat yourself.

More Single Nation Talk

About an hour-long podcast with Mona Charen and Jay Nordlinger over at Ricochet if, for some weird reason, you just can’t get enough of this stuff.

Defending Douthat’s Demographic “Decadence”

A Nation of Singles

Over at the Standard I’ve got a long-ish piece up about (1) what the data on Hispanic immigration looks like and (2) the more important trend toward singleness in America. There’s a lot to say on the subject that I just didn’t have space for so to some degree this is really mood-setting for What to Expect.

More Emo Eagles Fans

Via the Czabe:

Reid is a strange–really, really strange–case. He is, hands down, the most successful coach in Eagles history. You could make a case that he’s one of the three or four best coaches in the NFL over the last 15 years. And yet not only is he going to leave town utterly despised–he was never really liked in the first place. Part of this might be that the closer you get to Reid, the less attractive he is as a person. For instance, in an industry full of a-hole managers, he wasn’t just the worst boss in the NFL–he might have been the worst boss in America. He had lots of real strengths as a coach, but he was never able to improve on any of his professional weaknesses. All of the things that drove Eagles’ fans nuts in the first season he is still doing today. (Clock management, in-game adjustments, draft player evaluation.)

All of which is why Eagles fans are going to be thrilled to see Reid go, even as they understand that (1) they’ve never had it so good and (2) they’re probably about to head into a nuclear winter of bad Eagle football. It’s strange.

The Romneys in Exile

Nope. I still can’t figure out why voters have never warmed to Mitt Romney. It’s a mystery!

By all accounts, the past month has been most difficult on Romney’s wife, Ann, who friends said believed up until the end that ascending to the White House was their destiny. They said she has been crying in private and trying to get back to riding her horses.

“Fake” Emo Eagles Fan

From Galley Brother BJ:

(1) Quick question: Which team has won a game more recently? The Philadelphia Phillies of the Philadelphia Eagles? Obviously, the question answers itself.

(2) Going into Monday night’s dumpster fire game against the Carolina Panthers, the Eagles had the following stat: Since firing defensive coordinator Juan Castillo, opposing QB’s had completed 79% of their passes for 12 TD’s with 0 interceptions. After the game, the completion percentage dipped a bit, but the TD to INT ratio inched up to 14-0.
