A few years ago I decided that unless I were to craft for myself a creed of sorts during my single years, I would be in danger of letting these years pass me by in either purposeless and vain waysorin begrudging and self-righteous ways. I kn...

As a child, I wanted to be just like my Dad. Like many of us who were blessed to have a supportive and loving earthly Father, my days as a child revolved around trying to be like Dad. I’d watch his every move and be around him every time...

I love to write. In fact, I experience deep fulfillment and joy when I am working on a book, article, or post much like this one. I firmly believe God planted the passion within me, but I haven’t always felt that way. For a while, especially...

I have to confess, when Tyler asked me to write about discipleship, my English-major brain turned to etymology.
I thought to myself:
If my old professors taught me right, the Latin for “disciple” has to be something like discipulus / di...

In the midst of the swiftly changing politics and rhetoric of the gay rights movement, what grieves me most — as a person who upholds the traditional biblical stance on homosexuality — is that the attitude of “tolerance” has been conflat...

Can you define “disciple”? It’s not so easy. When I think of what a disciple is I begin coming up with characteristics. A disciple is a follower of someone. He is l...

When God Screams Through the Dull Roar of Life
I prefer for life to run it’s course at a fever pitch pace, mixed in with rest and relaxation. And I’m slowly realizing my wishes won’t always come true. My life is currently run at the pace of a dull roar, like the unending sound of crashing ocean waves. Not quite crazy enough to break me down, but not quite slow enough to ever relax.
I’ve been a dad for a little over 5 months now. I say that for those of you who have parented much longer can recognize that only 5 months into this new stage o...

“But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshippers.” John 4:23
I grew up in a Holy Spirit filled-dance-during-worship sort of church. Before I knew anything, I knew that God loved me, delighted in me, and was...

Discipleship: Re-Imagining Our Calling From Christ (A Blog Series)
Among the last words recorded during the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ are His giving of calling for those who were following Him. With his disciples around, just before ascending into heaven, Jesus says:
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations.”
At that moment the next step for the disciples became crisp and clear: go make disciples! As simple and as difficult of a calling anyone could receive. And...

4 Restraints Holding You Back From Inner Transformation
As I approached a busy season in life a wise man told me that I needed to cultivate the kind of soil God could use to work on my soul. It was his opinion that strong external living only comes from a place of internal fortitude and cultivation.
Over the past few years I’ve been involved in a lot of public ministry. Ministry where my name and my face are in front of a lot of people, and any success I’ve had in those opportunities is due to the inner transformation God did over the course of man...
