Chuck Wendig on Writing Young Adult Novels
At Astraea Press, the rule is clean teen fiction. Publisher Stephanie Taylor created a niche market for teens and adults who want great stories without some of life's in-your-face realities. Her philosophy particularly resounds with younger teens and middle schoolers who are advanced readers, desire a big story, but aren't ready for, or who do not want to read edgier fare. As an AP author, I constantly strive to deliver a compelling story with sympathetic and realistic characters. Secrets, and the power they hold over us, is an ongoing theme in my Teen Wytche Saga (Spell Fire, Book 3 releases October 22). I stay within the Astraea Press boundaries, sometimes while protesting loudly. Just ask my long-suffering editor!Clean teen fiction is hardly the norm. Chuck Wendig delves into YA publishing in his "28 Things (it was 25 but he kept adding) You Should Know About Young Adult Fiction." http://terribleminds.com/ramble/2013/06/04/25-things-you-should-know-about-young-adult-fiction/For those of you with delicate sensibilities, be warned. Chuck uses adult language.See you next week when I reveal the cover, blurb, excerpts, and more for Spell Fire, Book 3: The Teen Wytche Saga. ~Ariella Moonhttp://AriellaMoon.com

Spell Fire, Book 3: The Teen Wytche Saga to Release October 22
When I pushed to make the Astraea Press early summer deadline for Christmas themed manuscripts, I never dreamed Spell Fire, Book 3: The Teen Wytche Saga, would debut a scant three months after Spell Struck. For fans reeling from Spell Struck's can't-put-it-down plot, take a deep breath, because Spell Fire will launch on October 22nd.
Spell Fire introduces a new cast, new school, and a protagonist running from her past - a past that links her to Evie, Salem, Parvani, and other Jefferson High regulars.
Oh...and there is a dragon.
More next week, including the big cover reveal. (Artist Amanda Matthews has designed another stellar cover!) You can already view my dragon board http://www.pinterest.com/ariellamoon/dragons/, and next week I'll reveal a character board so you can see how I envision the teens who populate my stories.
Meanwhile, happy reading and be sure to post your reviews. I love hearing from my readers!

Set to Love: A Volleyball Romance from Jennifer Rae Gravely
As the shortest girl in my class, I was a disaster at volleyball. Not so for author and volleyball coach, Jennifer Rae Gravely. Set to Love is her new volleyball romance from Astraea Press. Welcome Jennifer, and Happy Birthday!

The championship is her dearest desire, not love. Recently appointed girls’ volleyball coach at Keowee High School, Randi Sly spends the night with rival coach Blake Steele after getting sick from drinking too much wine. Rumors swirl as the two battle for the State crown.
Excerpt Tip OneBe confident: The game of volleyball is not only physical but also psychological. Directly in his path, he spotted Randi Sly fumbling in her purse, not paying attention to the curb in front of her. “Randi,” he called. “Watch out!” He lunged forward, catching her as she stumbled. For a brief moment as she filled his arms, he thought of Jenna. “What are you doing?” she squealed, pulling away. “If you hadn’t called my name, I wouldn’t have tripped.” Randi narrowed her eyes as she ran her hands down her thighs, straightening the clingy cloth that outlined the shapeliness of her long legs. “No, if I hadn’t called your name and caught you, you would’ve broken your ankle. Some thanks for a noble deed done.” “I’m not a damsel you have to save.” She brushed her long, shiny brown hair from her shoulders. Even in high heels, she had to look up at him. Blake liked tall woman best and appreciated an athletic but shapely build. Randi obviously worked out on a regular basis, and she was every bit as tall as Jenna. Blake laughed aloud as he mentally pushed the thought of Jenna out of his head. He needed to quit comparing everyone to her. “You’re one of those.” “What does that mean?” She squared her shoulders, showing with her body language a complete dislike of him. No doubt she didn’t care for him calling her team out at the meeting. Her eyes blazed like a blue flame in the growing darkness of the night. “Independent female, the kind that’s a bit self-righteous.” Blake liked a feisty girl. That’s what drew him to Jenna last year when she moved to the area. Randi huffed, as he knew she would. He liked to play the game, but this one he suspected was pretty good at her job or else she wouldn’t have landed such a prestigious position. Keowee was a county and region rival of his school Saluda, the two volleyball powerhouses splitting the last decade’s state championships. He needed to gain an edge. “Don’t underestimate me, Blake.” About Jennifer Rae Gravely
Born in Ohio but raised in Pickens, SC, I graduated from Converse College with a triple major in history, politics, and English before earning my master’s degree in education. Returning to my high school alma mater to teach English and to coach volleyball, my teams won four state championships and six upper state titles in ten years. I live with my husband, daughter, seven beagles, and one cat. Set to Loveis the second romance published by Astraea Press featuring the fictional Southern town of Keowee.

Suddenly Tamed ~ A new Exotic Locales series by Sandra Sookoo
Let's start the week with a little romance, shall we?Today's featured novel is Suddenly Tamed, by fellow Astraea Press author, Sandra Sookoo.

Blurb:
Only when the heart finds its true match can the soul truly fly.
Because of her… he believes in romance again. Captain Alan Tame is wrapping up the tail end of his commission in India. Just as he's convinced himself to return home to England and resume his life in Brighton, his gaze falls on an enchanting woman. He's captivated by one glance and the pursuit begins no matter that it's a crazy idea.
Because of him… her hope for the future is restored. Devi Derbyshire is the daughter of an English military man and his Indian housekeeper. She knows exactly what she wants from life—a home, a family and the love of a good man. But her mixed heritage has clouded her options. One accidental glance across a ballroom gives her heart wings and her belly flutters.
Because of the magic of love… Alan cajoles Devi into a dance, and that one twirl about the floor leads to so much more. On a perfumed balcony, plans are made for an assignation in the courtyard, but before Devi can meet him, she’s waylaid and locked in a tiny room, leading Alan to assume the worst. Only the belief in true love will see them through.
Excerpt
At the end of a hallway that fed from the ballroom, a dark-haired woman stood, staring back at him. The sheen of her green silk gown glimmered in the soft candlelight, but it was her creamy, mulatto skin and glittering dark eyes that arrested his attention and sent his heart thumping back into painful life.“Robert, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve just seen someone I must speak with.” He didn’t wait for an answer, but dashed around his big friend and tore down the hall as if he’d lost his mind. Her eyes widened as he approached, but she turned and scurried off, deeper into the bowels of the house, away from the noise and congestion of the main party. The whisper of her skirts echoed in the passage.“Miss, wait! I would like to talk with you,” Alan implored as he followed her. When she paused at the entrance of a study, he took advantage of the delay, caught up to her and grasped her elbow. “Please, tell me you name.” Though, what exactly he’d do with that information once he gained it, he didn’t know.“I beg you, my lord.” Her voice was low and as lyrical as any of her countrymen’s. “Let me go and return to the party. I’m of no interest to you.” She attempted to pry his hand from her arm, but he refused to relinquish his grip. “Please.”The soft-spoken plea, combined with the fear in her brown eyes, worked as a dash of cold water to his face. Alan let her go, but didn’t step away. “I apologize for the rough handling.” He trained his gaze onto her bare arm beneath the fluttering capped sleeve, hoping his over-eager grip didn’t leave marks on her smooth skin. “And by no means am I a lord.”She blinked and the thick black fringe of her lashes brought his attention back to her glorious eyes. Those were eyes a man could easily fall into and drown. “Forgive my trespass. Nearly everyone I’ve met this evening is a titled Peer.” A tiny smile tugged at her full lips, lips that were stained dusky rose and invited either a bigger smile or a kiss. The latter he couldn’t, in all good conscience, give—at least until they’d been introduced and alone—and even then it would push the bounds of propriety.“Have a care, mysterious miss. Not all men are who they say they are, and many will invent a title to further a connection with an unsuspecting lady.” Though Alan wished to linger ever closer to her and breathe in the exotic floral scent she wore, he stepped back and put enough space between them to remain proper. Not that anyone had followed them to the study, but if he didn’t, he might give into the urge to sweep her into his embrace.“Ah.” She crossed her arms loosely over her chest, and the silver and emerald beads along the bodice and sleeves twinkled in the low light. “Who do you tell people you are?” Her question, born on the wings of slightly accented English, wrapped around him as gently as being caressed with satin.Warmth spread into his veins. She wished to linger in the hall with him instead of flee. Perhaps he wasn’t willing to quit the party so soon. “My name is Alan Tame—Captain Tame that is. I hail from Brighton, England.”She swept her gaze over his uniform before holding his once more. “In the service of His Majesty?”“For a few weeks more, yes. Then I plan to return to England and…” And what? He shook his head. “Well, it would seem my plans are not quite firm at the moment.”“Perhaps that is a good thing, Captain Tame.” Her giggle sent waves of heat into every extremity. “A man who plans every second of his life cheats himself of the adventure he might find otherwise.”

Sandra is a writer of romantic fiction. In the past couple of years she’s concentrated on funny contemporary romance as well as Regency-era romance, but she will, on occasion, write paranormal or sci-fi. Whether you like sweet or erotic heat levels, there’s something for everyone to fall in love with. She’s also a hybrid author, choosing to publish both with small presses and doing the indie thing.
When not immersed in creating new worlds and engaging characters, Sandra likes to read, bake, taste new teas, watch The Big Bang Theory and Psychas well as Finding Bigfoot, and travel. Her favorite place to spend vacation hours is Walt Disney World: it’s where dreams come true and the soul can play. When she’s not writing or inventing new recipes, she spends time with her husband—goofing off and making moments count.

Spooky Sunday ~ Ouija Boards and Spell Struck

Ouija boards have always given me the creeps. Even now, when my work as a shamanic healer routinely brings me in contact with spirits, ghosts, and the occasional evil entity, I avoid Ouija boards. To begin with, I don't need them. Secondly, I am sensitive to energy, and many of the divination boards contain a bad vibe. But if I dig deeper, I discover the real reason Ouija boards creep me out resides in my early memories.
As a child, I was clueless to the rules and safeguards regarding the spirit realm. As a result, Ouija board encounters opened the door to all sorts of bad entities. I drew upon that unease and innocence when I wrote a Ouija board scene into the second book of my Teen Wytche Saga, Spell Struck. The scene is in the point of view of Salem, the school goth. Salem fears her sister's next suicide attempt will succeed. She's desperate to find a Get Well spell, but the writing in the ancient grimoire she possesses has vanished. A schoolmate, Parvani, talks Salem and their friend Evie into trying a Ouija board.

Excerpt from Spell Struck:
"What's a planchette?"
"This." Parvani handed Evie a heart-shaped plank slightly larger than her palm. "We place our fingertips on it, ask a question, then wait and see what happens."
"The planchette will move toward yes or no, or spell out an answer," I added.
"I see." Evie's eyebrows furrowed as she handed back the board piece. "What are we going to ask it?"
Parvani placed the planchette on the middle of the board, with the pointy end facing up. "Let's start with, are there any helpful spirits in the room?"
"Sounds safe enough." Evie positioned her fingertips opposite Parvani's on the planchette. She glanced up at me. "Salem?"
I stifled a yawn. "Okay. Fine." Our fingertips formed a triangle. "Are there any helpful spirits in the room?"
We held our breaths. Baby whined in the hallway. Nothing happened.
I was about to fall back and ask for more pizza when the planchette cruised toward the letter H.
"H," Parvani said in a low, breathy voice. The planchette ambled to the letter I. "I," Parvani said.
"Hi?" Evie said.
Before either of us could respond, the little board moved two spaces to the right. "K," we said in unison. Then back to I, which we all said aloud. Energy swelled around us, building higher and higher as the planchette bobbed twice over the T. Evie's hand trembled, but she kept her fingers glued to the planchette as it looped up to E then skidded down to N.
"Hi kitten," I said.
Evie sobbed, and a tear splashed onto her arm.
"It's her dad!" Parvani explained. "He always called her Kitten."
I gaped at Evie. She didn't look as though she had influenced the planchette. Shock, devastation, and elation played across her face like clouds scudding through the sky. "Don't lift your fingertips," I warned.
Evie sniffed and nodded.
"Mr. O'Reilly, do you have a message for your daughter?" Parvani asked.
I couldn't breathe. My heart knocked against my chest so loud I figured the sound alone would waken the dead. I stared down at the planchette. Evie's fingertips were the color of summer tomatoes. The planchette started to glide.
B-E-W-A-R-E.
My throat became sandpaper. "Beware of what?"
T-H-E...
Baby barked, loudly, sharply, as if Death was at the door. Evie screamed. I jumped. My phone rang. Evie and Parvani leapt at me and clung to either side of me. Something whooshed to the ceiling.
"We let go!" Evie wailed.
We stared wild-eyed at each other.
Evie's coffin-shaped clock dove off the desk and thudded on
end between Parvani and the divination board. Our screams could have scratched paint off the walls. Baby barked louder. The hair on my nape rose like hackles on a coyote. I sensed a new energy enter the room, something dark and dense and creepy.

Kathy Bosman's Olympic Love Story
Today the spotlight is on Three Tiers For Win by South African author, Kathy Bosman.

Blurb for Three Tiers for Win
Three Tiers for Win is a story of adventure, romance, and family passion that unfolds with the backdrop of the 2012 London Olympics. Elaine said she would never date an athlete as they’re too driven. That’s until she meets kind, yet intensely focused and ambitious South African Olympic swimmer, Winston Harper. He stands for everything she’d chosen not to go for. Win also has a bad family history which keeps him from opening his heart to her. When intense attraction and affection breaks through some of their barriers, family secrets and conflicts pull them apart again. Only Elaine’s support and Win’s brokenness can draw them back together, but will that be strong enough to wipe away the past?
Excerpt:
Her hands shook as she spooned the mixture back into the food processor and he came closer to peer into the bowl. Electricity seemed to ooze out of his pores instead of sweat. She had a strong desire to rub the raised hairs on her arms.“What are you doing?” he asked.“I’ll mix the baking powder into a paste and add it in.” Wish he would go away so I can do this in peace.“Good idea.”“Aren’t the guys missing you?” she asked.“Trying to get rid of me?”Her cheeks throbbed, and she steadied the dish she was holding with all the willpower left inside of her.“I’ll only go if you let me make myself some coffee. The other guys are drinking sports and fruit drinks. I feel like coffee.”She laughed. “Are you eating right for your training?”“Not really.”“Okay.” She couldn’t help smiling. This guy was becoming more and more appealing with each minute.“Ooh, there’s biltong.”“It’s Mick’s. But I have some chocolate if you’re in the mood for being naughty.” Why did she say that? Now her face must be as red as a tomato because of the thoughts running through her head.“Do you think he’ll mind if I grab some?”She considered offering to buy Mick some more. The poor guy was starved. “What exactly did my brother buy for you all tonight?”“Chicken salad.” The face he pulled forced a strange squeaky giggle out of her. She would have given her usual trill laugh if she didn’t feel so embarrassed and overwhelmed with strange feelings for the guy.“I wish I had something else to offer you.”“Come out to dinner with me. Then I can order a man-sized steak.”Flustered was not a strong enough word for Elaine at that moment. She could swear the temperature in the kitchen was as hot as the oven and that the room was about to explode. “I have to bake a cake.”“That can wait, can’t it? Tomorrow’s another day. If you want, I’ll help you with it.”The guy was probably aiming to get into the Olympics team. They had two months left before the trials. He couldn’t be serious about giving up a training day to help some silly girl bake a wedding cake? That idea didn’t match the solid, oozing-with-masculinity man with piercing steel blue eyes, standing a mere two feet from her. She must be dreaming. Maybe she’d fallen asleep next to Peggy on the sofa, and she would wake up to find this all a crazy dream.“I think a cup of coffee will have to do then.” He turned around and pushed the kettle button on. She hadn’t said ‘no,’ and now he was giving up. Her heart plummeted to zero in two seconds. She’d just missed the opportunity of her life to go on a date with the hunkiest piece of male on the planet. What was she thinking? Of course it wasn’t a good idea. She wasn’t setting herself up for disappointment going with someone smooth and driven like him who would hurt her as soon as the athletic or model type woman came along.

Create Tension With Ticking Clocks
Ticking ClocksIn my first novel, Spell Check, Halloween and the approaching full moon provide ticking clocks for Evie O’Reilly as she races to stop a wrongful love spell from being cast on her secret crush, Jordan.
Ticking clocks add tension, which is why they appear so often in movies and books. The stakes have to be high. Failure to beat the ticking clock must result in terrible consequences. The earth will end. A Head of State will die. The coach will turn back into a pumpkin.
At its core, a Ticking Clock plot looks like this:
The hero or heroine must ____________ before ___________, or ___________.
Example:Harry Potter must find and destroy all of the horcruxesbefore Voldemort grows stronger, or evil will triumph.
To up the stakes and increase tension, the writer must layer in an emotional component that makes the goal both personal and universal.
Harry Potter must stop Voldemort, the man who murdered Harry’s parents, before Voldemort grows stronger, or Voldemort and his minions will destroy everyone and everything Harry loves.
The ticking clock doesn’t have to have worldwide repercussions. But it must threaten devastation to the hero or heroine’s world. Life won’t end if Evie can’t stop the wrongful love spell. But her world will end. She will lose Jordan, who has been her friend since they were preschoolers. Jordan’s world will end. He will lose his free will and be bonded to a girl he doesn’t love, possibly for eternity.
To add another emotional layer to Spell Check, the girl Evie must stop from casting the wrongful love spell is Parvani, Evie’s best friend. Adding to that betrayal, Halloween will mark the second anniversary of Evie’s father’s death. As the date approaches and Parvani remains insistent about casting the spell, the already grieving Evie faces betrayal and lost friendships. Halloween looms, along with the optimum phase of the moon for spell casting. Can Evie beat the ticking clock?
Consider your favorite book or movie. Did it contain a ticking clock?

Bronze Book Tour
http://www.rafflecopter.com/rafl/shar...
The Glister Journals: Bronze Allison Anderson knows she's a little different, but it hadn't bothered her too much-until now. Moving away from everything she's ever known to a new house, new neighborhood, and new school is bad enough, but it's her first year of high school too, making it even more intimidating. She's more aware of her social and physical limitations than ever before. And then there are the new people she meets: the tough-looking girl in her home room; the cute but dangerous-looking boy she first saw before school even started; the quiet, older girl who keeps to herself; the sullen-looking, seemingly isolated junior that doesn't seem to trust or like her at all. Can she trust them? While the peaceful situation of her new home only amplifies the sound of her own doubts, she begins to learn that things are not always what they seem, and her world is turned upside-down by these new friends, two-legged and otherwise. Life soon becomes more complicated, and much more interesting! About The Glister Journals series:The Glister Journals series is told from the perspective of a normal but not average teenage girl. It is not obvious, but Allison has a mild pervasive developmental disorder (autism spectrum). She thinks and experiences things a little differently from most of the other kids. In the past it has caused her to be alienated at best and bullied at worst. After the family moves, she becomes involved with a group of teens that open up new worlds to her. The four book series follows her through high school but is equally about her friends who have their own problems, fears, and aspects of their lives they’d rather keep quiet. There is action—mostly in the form of equestrian and extreme sports—and though there are only hints of it in Bronze, there is a love story which will play a more prominent part as the series progresses. The main story is about assumptions, acceptance, love, and friendship, though there are other themes running throughout the series.
Author B.B. Shepherd A graduate of Cal Poly with graduate work at Chapman and U C Santa Cruz, B. B. Shepherd has lived most of her life in California and loves the diverse beauty of its many landscapes. Music, horses, literature, and art have been her passions as long as she can remember. She enjoys road trips, almost all horse sports and extreme sports (as a spectator), and is addicted to research. As a writer, Shepherd enjoys exploring emotions and motivations: why do people do what they do? She also likes trying to find the funny side of things. She admits to being a hopeless romantic and often gets in trouble for her sense of humor. Bronze is her debut novel, the first in a series of four called The Glister Journals. She currently works full time as a music professional and educator, and lives in the San Francisco Bay area with her youngest daughter and a very silly cat.

Praise for Bronze Allison narrates a gentle coming-of-age story that has a strong equine subplot…undeveloped plot points hint at future complications and will likely keep readers looking for the next entry. — Cindy Welch Booklist Online Written with intelligent humor, this tale follows an awkward girl as she enters a new school...This is a strong first book, both for Shepherd and for the series. The friendships the characters build are realistic and lifelike, strong, and durable, just like bronze. — Beth VanHouten ForeWord Reviews The story is well-written and sweetly told. Allison’s anxieties and insecurities are true-to-life, and so affectionately and clearly portrayed as to make anyone who’s ever been through adolescence wince in sympathy. Dave, Robin and Chris are complicated, intelligent, three-dimensional characters whom the reader enjoys getting to know, and all of the minor characters are vividly drawn and believably real. The author is adept at setting a scene, both external and internal, bringing Allison’s mind and world to vivid life. — Catherine Langrehr IndieReader "Bronze: The Glister Journals" is a well-written novel of teenagers and their world.
