Sunday Snippet: Event Horizon

Well, April stillfeels like a mix of winter and summer but not spring. We have hot days thenplummet back to cold. I’m hoping May evens it out and we hold steady for awhile.

Had a crazy-busyweek with work. More projects coming in hot and needing immediate attention. I’mso happy that all of them are absolutely fun and exciting to work on. I lovethem!

I did have verylimited time for viewing this week. I don’t mind the trade off, because I usuallyhave an old standby on in the background like Perry Mason, Columbo,or Murder, She Wrote.

I did finish up StrangestThings and I ended up enjoying the episode.

I also caughtanother episode in my great rewatch of Battlestar Galactica. This upcomingweek, we’re going with a double header to round out season one.

I’ll be starting anew episode of The Mandalorian later tonight.

I also got tolisten to my daughter’s radio show. It’s finals week and they get to choosetheir music. My daughter and her co-DJ picked seventies hits for their timeslot. And they made great choices if I do say so. And I do.

That’s pretty muchit for the life update this week. Tonight’s post is from Event Horizon,a novella where the characters meet and hit it off but one of them has a secret.

Here’s themini-blurb:

Casey meets Oliver on a transport flight to celebrate hisdad's retirement. They hit it off, but Casey has a big secret … she's thereason Oliver's brother didn't pass the flight test and she doesn't want theold man to find out.

And a sneaky peek…

Alittle fissure of nerves cut through the coffee lining her stomach.

Ishe fishing for info? Wouldn't hurt to tell her side, right? Hell, she didn'tknow.

Tappingher fingers on her thigh, she slouched in her seat a little. "Uh, whichtime are you referring to?" She'd met Orin twice and both times she'druffled his feathers.

Oliverstirred his coffee. "When Orwen almost flunked out." He set his spoonaside and gave her his full attention.

Ohshit. "Well..." She could share some of the details of Orin's firstvisit to her office. "The first time I met your dad, I'm pretty sure hedidn't know what to make of me…"

She'dbeen in her office, grading papers when the space carrier commander walked intoher space without bothering to even knock. She recognized the familialresemblance to Orwen immediately but didn't give anything away. The man cut afine figure in his uniform with broad shoulders and medals lining one entireside of his chest. He removed his cover and set it on her desk then more orless hijacked her attention by looming over her until she met his gaze.

Sheset her pen aside. "Did I miss a memo? I don't have a conference scheduledon my calendar." Firmly placing the next move in his hands, she pushedaway from the desk and got to her feet.

Afterall, he did outrank her even if he broke protocol by barging in.

Theelder Stephas didn't mince words. "I just reviewed Orwen Stephas's marks. He's skating on the cusp, and I want to know why." Orin folded his armsover his chest. "My boy isn't stupid. He's got flying in his blood."His tone all but dared her to say otherwise.

Orwenreally didn't … he grasped the mechanics of handling the multimillion-dollarspacecrafts but had no natural feel for them.

But… Casey opted to partially agree. "Yes, Orwen has keen intelligence."Which he wasted on something he didn't truly love.

Orinflung an arm out. "Then what's the problem?" He stared her down."Maybe you're not very good at your job."

Caseyfought the urge to punch the elder Stephas. The man showed up, didn't bother toeven introduce himself, and tried to interrogate her? Or maybe he wanted tointimidate her. Didn't matter. She wouldn't cave under pressure.

Insteadof risking a trip to the brig for insubordination, she went to her file cabinetand pulled out her last two years of fitness reports. "You're welcome toreview my fitreps, sir." She sat at the top of the instructor list for areason.

Orinsnatched them from her hands. "You have a smart mouth, don't you?"But a gleam of respect entered his gaze.

He'dleft without bothering to read the hefty file.

Shecouldn't help but feel a little sorry for the old man. When reality hit itwould bruise hard. Orwen Stephas didn't have what it took to fly. She knew itdeep in her bones.

Hergut also said his dad would never accept the fact—unless he saw it with his owntwo eyes. And that day, she'd fudged Orwen's numbers on his final, giving himpassing grades when he'd been just shy of having the score needed forqualifying for test flights. Unethical and, frankly, a court-martial offense. And the one thing she held back when sharing the story with Oliver.

Buther dice move paid off. Orwen didn't make it past the first leg of flighttesting. He busted too many moves and got tagged with a failure.

MeetingOliver's gaze again, she lifted a shoulder. "I was disappointed when Orwendidn't make it through the first set of quals. And I even liked your daddespite the ballsy nature of his visit."

Andshe still liked him after their second meeting, which she wouldn't get intoright now.

I love writing alittle intrigue into the story. Casey is kind of stuck in a bad spot and she hopesnothing blows up in her face.

That’s it for thisweek. Catch everyone on the flipside.

Sunday Snippet: Escape on Equinox (a Capital City Seasons novella)

Celebrated my thirty-fourthanniversary this weekend! We had crappy weather, so we brought Chinese home andstayed in for the evening.

Had another busywork week and I'm so thankful the projects are rolling in. Working on aterrific manuscript and I'm so excited to dive into the story. This will be afun one!

Had a so-so week ofviewing television. I'm still focusing on the great cleanup and spent a goodamount of time reorganizing and rearranging things in my living room.

I did finish up Wednesdayand I enjoy this show so much. I'm excited to see where things go from here.

Caught another episodeof Classic Rugrats. The autumn leaves one is fun. I love how much thisshow still appeals to both kids and adults.

Watched the premierepisode of Brokenwood Mysteries season nine. This is another show I havea lot of love for. I miss a few of the original recurring characters but I'menjoying some of the newer ones. Trudy in particular ends up being fun.

Enjoyed an episodeof Endeavor. I'm kind of sad to see Thursday falling in with the newcrew. But I'm hoping there might be a twist to this thread. We'll see whathappens.

Caught anotherepisode of Classic Who. I'm nearing the end of the classic episodes andI'm happy I did a full rewatch. There are a bunch of episodes I either missedas a kid or completely forgot.

Started a new SilentWitness two-parter. I kind of like seeing Nikki in therapy. Not really surewhat's going on with Jack, but he's never boring. Thomas is another one I'm notsure about. His interaction, or lack thereof, with his daughter left a lot tobe desired. Clarissa is awesome as always.

Enjoyed anotherepisode of Battlestar Galactica. This is another one of my favoritesbecause Lee Adama steps fully into the role of being a badass.

Also needed some backgroundnoise and I ended up watching the Surf Now channel and The Forgotten Coast.Ended up enjoying it a lot.

Started another episodeof Strangest Things. Kind of an odd mix of topics with this one, butvery interesting so far.

That's pretty muchit for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Escape on Equinox,a Capital City Seasons novella.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Jim Hodges, an elite officer in a specialized tacticalunit, finally meets a woman with a sweet disposition and a naughty sense ofhumor. But when she's taken hostage and his team is called in, he's determinedto make sure a quick resolution takes place, which won't be easy because he'sordered to step aside and let his fellow members handle everything.

And a sneaky peek…

Roz collapsed and burrowed into him, nuzzling his skin. "God, wake-up sex is so very great." Her lipsbrushed over his shoulder.

Jim stretched and flexed his legs."It is pretty damned incredible." He kind of decided Roz made it thatway, but kept his mouth shut.

He'd only managed talking her intospending the night twice. She usually bolted around midnight. But … she had anearly shift at the hospital today, and he lived closer.

Roz groaned and sat up. "Okay.Shower, coffee, work." She glanced toward the kitchen."Auto-timer?"

Jim's lips turned up. "Thecaffeine will be hot, ready, and waiting for you."

Roz leaned down and snagged hismouth. "I think I love you." Sliding from the bed, she padded acrossthe floor to the bath.

Jim laughed. "I think you lovethe coffeemaker."

The water kicked on, but Roz pokedher head out the door. "That, too. But the sex is way better withyou." She smirked.

Jim snorted. "Get your showeror you'll be late." He propped a pillow behind him and flipped on thenews.

"Breaking news. The IronHeights Correctional Facility is under lockdown due to rioting inmates. Sourcesinside the maximum-security prison say the unrest is contained to two cellblocks and the situation is under control."

Jim frowned. "For now, maybe." He grabbed his phone and called in.

The Alpha Team leader, Chris Renfer, laughed. "Isn't it your day off?"

Jim chuckled. "Yeah, but … I don'thave plans." At least nothing he couldn't work around.

Renfer tsked. "That's why theycall it downtime, Hodges." He shuffled some papers. "But consideryourself on standby. The correctional staff does have the situation undercontrol. But we both know that could change in an instant. Our current ordersare if someone breaches the perimeter and escapes, we'll be called in."Renfer paused a moment. "I'll give you a shout if we need you."

Jim gave a nod. "I'll be available."He ended the call and set his phone aside.

The footage on the screen showedsmoke billowing out of the center of the building, possibly from the yard. Jimdidn't have a good vibe about the situation. Once prisoners started settingfires, things tended to go bug-ass gonzo.

Roz came out of the bathroom, toweling her hair dry. "What's going on?" Her gaze flicked to the screen.

Jim filled her in. "Prisonriot. Right now, the correctional staff has the situation under control."He slid to the side of the mattress and swung his legs over the edge. "Youwant me to drive you in? Just in case." Traffic would probably be a bitch.

Roz shook her head. "Nah. Ihave to run a zillion errands after work and need my car." She sat on thebed and eased in for a kiss. "Appreciate the offer, though." She rose, grabbed her stack of scrubs, and started dressing.

Jim got to his feet and headed forthe kitchen. Sure enough, the pot sat full and ready. He poured coffee and tooktwo mugs into the bedroom. So … after errands, any plans?"

Roz lifted a brow. "Are yougoing for two nights in a row?"

Jim chuckled. "Doesn't have tobe overnight. Was thinking more like grabbing something to eat and maybe watchinga game or something."

If he didn't get called out totrack fugitives.

Poor Jim won't get called out to track fugitives, but hewill get sucked into a tense situation.

That's it for this week. Catch everyone on the flipside.

Sunday Snippet: Drink Me (Bonus scene for One Hot Mess)

Had a wild weekwith several work projects coming in hot and taxiing on the runway. Also had somewild weather, which isn't a big shock. We're supposed to be chilly againsometime next week, which I'm not looking forward to.

Very slow week ofviewing. Between the work projects, weather, and an award ceremony for mydaughter's university, I didn't get a lot watched.

I did get anotherepisode of Pennyworth watched and, ugh, it kind of broke my heart. Thefallout is not going to be pretty, I'm sure.

Watched one my veryfavorite episodes of Battlestar Galactica with "Tigh Me Up, Tigh MeDown." Seriously, the acting in this episode is beyond stellar. The dinnerparty from hell has to be one of the funniest scenes in the entire series, which okay, might not be saying much because the subject matter of the seriesisn't always open to humor. But kudos to the writers for working it in wheneverthey could.

I also started anew episode of Wednesday and I'm definitely settling in and enjoying thewild ride. The snark is top notch and Wednesday's quest to find answers thatkeeps generating more questions intrigues me. I love this show.

And that's prettymuch it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Drink Me,a sexy short bonus read featuring the characters from One Hot Mess.

Here's the mini-blurb:

A bottle of alcohol takes on the role of perpetrator in acouple's romp filled weekend. Both would swear the damn thing dared them todrink every last drop.

And a preview snippet…

Van poured another round. "Here'sto a brief moment of calm in our otherwise intense and blisteringschedule." He lifted his glass.

Eva smirked and raised hers."I'll drink to that." She let the alcohol slide down her throat.

Mesmerized, Van swallowed hard. He couldn'tget over seeing a different side to Eva. She never ceased to amaze him. In thearena, she proved to be a stellar opponent, going after points with a warrior'smindset. She dripped with sweat and often blood by the end of a match.

She'd transformed herself tonightand he liked the sultry vixen she revealed. Who knew a veritable siren wholoved to flirt existed under the bravado and brash boldness of the athlete?Well, he did … now.

Eva snapped her fingers. "Hey,where'd you go? Please don't make me do something crazy like singing the latestchart-topper…" She chuckled. "Or, even better, an old standby fromour grandparents' era." Her finger traced the rim of the tumbler.

Van's eyes widened. "You meanone of those torch songs? The kind they always sang in the smoky jazzclubs?" Color him shocked. "Those date back several centuries ago. Howcome you're familiar with them?" Her costume made some much sense now.

Eva poured two more shots, thebottle at the halfway mark. "My grandparents were mad for early twentieth-century stuff. Specifically, anything from the nineteen twenties through thesixties." She shrugged. "Their love rubbed off on me."

Van shook his head. "Everythingold is new again. Mine loved stuff from even earlier, like the nineteenth century."Hence his detective garb.

Eva flashed a quick smile."Amazing what you find out with a little conversation." She raisedher shot. "To all things retro, vintage, and really, really old." Herlips twitched and she laughed.

Van got into the spirit. "Let'sthrow in ancient and fossilized, too." He downed the vodka, welcoming the smoothsting against his throat.

Eva let out another laugh, this oneloud and merry.

Mac returned. "You two arehaving way too much fun over here. Need anything else?"

Van gave a quick back and forth."Nah, we're good. Discovering our grandparents share a weird affinity forrelics and antiques." And that Eva had an incredibly sexy laugh.

Van and Eva are afun couple to write and this scene fills in a blank from their story, which Ihope to finish up soon and get out there for all to read.

That's it for thisweek. Catch everyone on the flipside.

Sunday Snippet: Domestic Partners

Happy springholidays for those who celebrate. We're having a nice, quiet weekend with excellentweather for once.

Long work week butI got a lot accomplished. Should have one of my projects finished up this weekand another ready to move on to the next phase. The third is in a holdingpattern for now and we'll pick that one back up in about two weeks.

Had an okay week ofwatching television. I've also been working on the great clean out projectagain and that limited some of my viewing time.

I started out with StrangestThings. This show always entertains me with the wild and weird stuff theyfeature. The psychograph shed some light on at least one X-Filesstoryline for me.

Continued myrewatch of Battlestar Galactica with "Flesh and Bone." The reintroductionof the Leoben character is an excellent watch, even if I completely dislikethat particular model of cylon. The acting is terrific in this episode.

Caught anotherepisode of The Mandalorian. Nice to see the big bad from last season isstill a big bad. Always great to see Carl Weathers. Loved Grogu's antics inthis one. Can't wait to watch the next episode.

Watched another episodeof Only Murders in the Building. Loved seeing the fan crew again. Notsure how I feel about bringing Jan back into the story but I'm thoroughlyenjoying the new wrinkle with Oliver and Teddy. I'm looking forward to the nextepisode.

And that's prettymuch it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Domestic Partners,a novella where the characters are reunited—after a breakup—under unfortunatecircumstances.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Tabby and Hale pretend to be domestic partners to keepthe man who killed her husband from getting his hands on her. But when they'reforced to live together, sparks and tempers fly, because Tabby broke a promiseshe made to Hale and he's not going to let her forget it.

And a sneaky peek…

She really didn't deserve his help, but he couldn't shake the horrible vibe he got from Lawrence.

Hale shrugged. "Quite true, but it's not actually about you." He moved to sit beside her on the floor."There's something going on here. I'm stuck in limbo because the explorerteam left two days before I got here." With no advance notice, whichreeked of something rank and foul. "My transport left on time. My arrival datewas scheduled well in advance. Why didn't they wait?" The weird timing pingedin his brain on long shifts.

Tabby paused her stitching."Hm. That's a great question." She went back to sewing the tear inthe canvas.

Hale lifted his chin. "I aimto find the answer, which means some hard questions about you and Sam." Hebraced for impact.

Tabby narrowed her gaze, hershoulders tensing. "Why? My relationship with him is none of yourbusiness." She jabbed the needle in his direction.

Hale sighed. "Nothing aboutyour personal life. Unless it has something to do with why Sam waskilled." He had zero desire to dig into anything to do with theirmarriage.

Tabby finished sewing the tentbefore she spoke again. "I still want to know why you're willing tohelp." Setting her supplies aside, she met his gaze.

Finding Sam's killer would clearher name, but she wouldn't believe he cared about that. Yet he did … even if heshouldn't. And he wouldn't be examining the reason anytime soon.

He rolled a shoulder. "Look, I'mconvinced Sam's death is all tied into what's really going on. That's it.Nothing more, nothing less." If he moved in and spent time with her, maybehe'd eventually believe those words.

Tabby gave him a long look."As long as we've got that straight." She got to her feet. "It'lltake three days to process the paperwork for the change in livingstation." Heading for the door, she pushed it open, indicating they weredone.

Hale stood up and gave her a nod."I'll file the request before my shift." He paused on his way out."Sleep well." Not waiting for a response, he left and headed for thedorms and a sleepless night.

This story did somemeandering before the pieces finally started falling in place. Tabby and Haledefinitely have some issues to work through.

That's it for thisweek. Catch everyone on the flipside.

Sunday Snippet: Dodging Reality

An interestingstart to April with howling winds and a kaleidoscope of weather. We got a mix ofpretty much everything. Rain, flurries, high wind advisory, and temperaturesall over the place.

Solid week ofediting. I have three projects that are moving forward at a great pace. I'mlooking forward to getting these completed.

Had a decent weekof television. I'm not quite back to my full rotation but I've been writing alot more and that's not a bad thing.

Caught anotherepisode of Wednesday. I love the lore and world building in this show.Didn't know if I'd like having Wednesday at the center of a prophecy but I likewhere things are going at the moment.

Watched anotherepisode of Classic Rugrats. Always fun to catch a couple that don't alwaysmake the rotation of encores.

Enjoyed the finaleof Midsomer Murders. I kind of miss when they did six to eight episodesper season, but the four we have this time around are all excellent.

Continued myrewatch of Battlestar Galactica with "Six Degress of Separation."This episode has so many great one-liners with two coming from Doc Cottle. Seriously,it's hard to top the writing and acting in this show.

Caught another episodeof Peak Practice and it ended up being a bit of a doozy. I think I havefive episodes left of this series and a lot is supposed to happen. Not sure I'mquite ready for it.

Watched anotherepisode of Classic Who. I'm nearing the end of this season and I'm notsure where things are going with this arc, but I'm excited to find out.

Started the secondhalf of Silent Witness. Nikki just can't catch a break. I'm quiteinterested in finding out where the twists are leading. Update next week onthis.

That's pretty muchit for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Dodging Reality,a novella that brings reality television to the front lines of a war.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Take a reality show set on the front lines in space, add abrash reporter who wants the down and dirty secrets of the crew—and will stopat nothing to get them—and mix it up with a couple fighting their attractionwhile protecting their pilots from the ratings hound. Stir in a littlebackstabbing from the cameraman and the outcome is Dodging Reality.

And a sneaky peek…

Caro ducked into the office to findVic scribbling notes in a file. "Is that the incident report forJazz?"

Vic glanced up. "Yeah. Addingsome notes after talking to the doc. She's out for at least two flightrotations, probably more." He went back to writing.

Caro crossed the deck to her sideof the desk. "You stopped to see her then?" She should head tosickbay but didn't trust herself not to make things worse.

Vic grunted. "Yeah, figured youshould keep your distance for a bit. Got the rundown from Doc Mantle." Hepaused a moment. "You need to know he let Presley speak with Jazinksi, buthe only gave the woman five minutes." He met Caro's gaze. "No ideawhat Jazinski said. So be prepared for anything."

Caro dropped the after-actionreport in Vic's inbox. "Well, you sure made nice with Ms. Ten Inch Heels.Guess I'm not surprised Mantle did, too." She propped her hip on the edgeof his desk.

Vic looked up with a grimace."Yeah, well, he didn't have a choice. Sickbay isn't off limits. And it's notso much making nice as it is biding time. Honestly … she scares me." Hetossed his pen on the open file in front of him.

Caro raised both brows. "Forreal? Why?" She couldn't wait to hear the answer.

Vic leaned back and pondered amoment. "She's all polish and shine on the outside." He looked atCaro. "Makes a spiffy, pretty picture."

Caro prodded. "And?"

Vic shrugged. "Eh. I don'ttrust it or her. The razor-sharp talons and acid tongue will eventually put inan appearance."

Caro gave a deep, affirming nod."Ah. And you don't relish the surprise attack."

He agreed. "Nope. She'd bebetter off like you. I can see your claws coming from a mile away." Hewinked. "I like that. Know what to expect."

Caro rose. "Careful, Major.Someone might get shredded with my claws before that woman leaves."

Vic chuckled. "Now thesurprise of that … I'll look forward to."

Caro laughed. "I'm hitting thegym. Maybe I'll put a likeness of Ms. Priss on the punching bag."

Vic shook his head. "Go on.Get out of here and enjoy the downtime." He lifted his chin. "You won'tget much after today."

Caro gave him a mock salute andexited the office.

I think I'm closeto having this one completed. I have the scenes mapped out and need to tie somethreads together. Fingers crossed I can release this in the next severalmonths.

That's it for thisweek. Catch everyone on the flipside.

Sunday Snippet: Differences Settled

We had a crazy week of weather. Rain, rain, rain, followed by wind, wind, wind. Lost power for a couple of hours and returned some of the neighbor's stuff that ended up in our backyard. Something tells me we're going to pay for a fairly mild winter with a chaotic and wild spring. Can't wait.

Good week on work projects and I finally made headway with clearing out my inbox on my old PC and I'm starting the transfer of files to my new computer. I can't wait to get this project done so I can go back to having one desktop instead of two in my workspace. Up next, tackling my laptop to see if I can get the graphics card to function again. Or, the issue could be related to a Windows update. Either way, I'm hoping I won't have to invest in a new laptop. Fingers crossed.

Not a bad week of television viewing. I didn't get quite as much watched as I did last week, but I got a few shows in.

I finished up the Classic Who episode I started last weekend and I'm kind of interested in how this one plays out. Hoping to get to the next part this week.

Watched the season twenty-one opener of Silent Witness. Nice to see some fallout from Nikki's Mexico trip. Jack is a little off and I'm curious to find out why. Love to see Clarissa out in the field because she's become a favorite character and shouldn't always be relegated to the lab.

Enjoyed another episode of Strangest Things. The items they discuss are always interesting and I love the speculative aspect when they really don't know exactly what they have.

Caught another episode of The Mandalorian. Bo Katan's introduction piqued my interest. I like how a different sect of Mandalorians are out there giving a different perspective.

Watched another episode of Only Murders in the Building. Thoroughly enjoyed discovering the building has secret passageways and tunnels. Loved the introduction of Lucy. I haven't changed my theory quite yet on who the killer might be, but we'll see what happens. Also nice to see Oliver show up for his son. Much needed character growth there.

Got to return to my Battlestar Galactica rewatch this week. While the episode doesn't rank as one of my favorites from season one, it's still a solid watch. Frankly, season one doesn't have a bad episode. It's probably the best first season of television I've watched.

Enjoyed another episode of Pennyworth. A few unexpected twists turned up and I'm here for those. I'm quite enjoying the slow discovery of how Alfred became Batman's butler. There's not a wasted moment on the screen.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Differences Settled, a novella that puts the characters in a tenuous situation and gives them the opportunity to see what their relationship can be.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Regan Tiedt and Finn O'Kellen are transferred to a new ship under difficult circumstances and find they have to settle quite a few differences with their new crew mates … and their commanding officer.

And a sneaky peek…

Leaving the quartermaster's office, Regan compared her berth assignment with Finn. "We're in the same bunkroom. That works to our advantage." If they didn't have to find places or reasons to meet, they'd get more done.

Finn gave a nod but waited until they entered their quarters before making a comment. "And we've got the bunk area to ourselves. Wonder if Craig did that by design? You know, keep us isolated from her crew until she has a read on us…" He dumped his rucksack on one of the racks. "Not that I mind not having four other people to trip over."

Regan cocked her head. "Huh. You might have a point. With the whole competition thing, it makes sense she'd keep us out of the thick of everything until she decides where we'll fit best." Which shouldn't really be her purview.

Finn snorted. "Or where we can do the most damage to the norms." He yanked a locker open and started unpacking.

Regan dropped her bag to the deck and settled on the edge of the berth opposite Finn's. "Huh, yeah. Once she gets a feel for our skill sets, she can drop us in wherever she wants to rattle cages." Not exactly standard operating procedure.

Finn grunted. "Been thinking about how to approach this whole thing. After meeting with Craig, I've got an idea that should get us headed in the right direction." He closed the locker and sat across from her. "One of us should move up the food chain quickly and the other should screw up a lot and get left behind." He stood again and unfolded his bed linens.

Regan turned the idea over. "Who does what?" She got up and started unpacking.

Finn paused, holding a pillow in one hand. "You've got more flash and flair. You should be the mover and shaker." He slid the case over the fluffy square and dropped it on the bunk.

Regan did a slow nod. "Okay. What will you really be doing when I'm burning up the chart to the top?" And, no doubt, stepping on toes with her size eight boots.

Finn gave her a point-blank stare. "Snooping around and gathering intel."

He did have an uncanny ability to get people to open up, usually by keeping his mouth shut and his ears open. But he flew like a dream and his numbers couldn't lie. The data wouldn't support Finn being a fuck-up.

Regan lifted a shoulder. "Not sure it'll work. Your record speaks for itself." She started making up her bunk. "You'll never pull off being a screw up or that you lack skills." Then again, she'd be worse at even attempting the idea.

Finn hand-waved the objection. "Okay, so maybe I'm not a complete screw-up. More floundering in a new situation and struggling to keep up." He settled on the bunk again. "But if you quickly fall in and keep the focus on you, it'll give me the freedom to work behind the scenes."

Regan pondered. "Okay, let's see what happens." She finished getting her rack in order and closed her locker. "We should hit the mess and start putting the plan in action." Crossing the deck, she undogged the hatch.

Finn grabbed her arm. "Reg, you're gonna push a lot of buttons. Piss off a lot of people."

She nodded. "Yeah, a skill I've developed over the years. Comes in handy sometimes." Especially when they needed to bring a pilot in line—she almost always played queen bitch to Finn's affable buddy.

Finn held her gaze. "The difference here is no one knows you on this ship but me." His hand slid down to grasp hers. "I've got your back."

Her lips curved, because she'd never doubted that fact. "Figured you would." She squeezed his fingers then exited into the corridor.

If she could count on one thing, Finn would be it.

This one has been a lot of fun to write. I enjoy the fish out of water scenario and bit of a slow burn attraction that might just heat up fast.

That's it for this week. Catch everyone on the flipside.

Sunday Snippet: A Day in the Life

It's been an eventful weekend. On Friday night at my daughter's university campus, an individual fired multiple shots at a baseball game. Thankfully—and it pains me to say this at all because it shouldn't be anyone—only one person, a player for the opposing team, and the alleged target of the shooter, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect is already in custody and has already been charged by the county prosecutor for attempted murder and felonious assault, both charges have firearm specifications. I'm very happy no one else was physically injured and I'm terribly sorry for the opposing team's player and their family. It's a lot to endure.

It's a lot to endure for everyone. The university staff, baseball team, students, the local community, and the opposing college, their staff, team, and students now have a shared experience with, unfortunately, too many others. I'm so happy my daughter wasn't anywhere near the baseball field when this occurred and I'm very happy the other players are okay. Like I said, an eventful weekend.

On top of that, I had a full week of work projects and made good progress on all of them.

I also got some television in. I didn't have a chance to do my rewatch of Battlestar Galactica, but we're on the schedule for next week.

I did finish up The Mandalorian. Ended up enjoying the episode a lot.

Also watched Only Murders in the Building. I have a working theory on who the killer will be and I can't wait to see if I'm right.

Caught another episode of Pennyworth and I like how this show is coming together. Looking forward to finishing out the season.

Started Wednesday, based on recommendations from a bunch of my viewing friends. Loved the first episode and look forward to more.

Enjoyed another episode of Classic Rugrats and I think I actually watched on I missed during the thousands of times we watched this when the kids were growing up. Kind of happy to have that happen.

Caught another episode of Midsomer Murders. Loved this one and laughed out loud a couple of times. I guess one more episode to finish out the season.

Watched another episode of Peak Practice and enjoyed it. I'm at the midway point for season nine and getting more familiar with the new faces.

Started a new episode of Classic Who and should finish it up later tonight.

That's pretty much it for the life updated this week. Tonight's post is from A Day in the Life, which will hopefully end up being a companion read to Shyler: Finding Homeat some point.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Alphie is a kick-ass droid who assists Inspector Shyler Lumen when she arrives on Furlough 99. He's also not afraid to offer unwarranted advice.

And a sneaky peek…

Alphie pinged the moment Inspector Sweetie entered the elevator with Mr. Galactic Mogul. The ride down in the lift would be quiet, just the two of them. Shyler's body language all but screamed she needed space.

Marshton gave it to her. He seemed to sense she didn't want idle chit chat or friendly banter. He stood back and away from her, owning his corner of confined space. She stood up close to the door, tapping her hand against her leg, no doubt impatient to see if Spider had worked his magic.

Which he had. Alphie had several messages for her.

Shyler moved quickly after the exiting the lift and strode directly to Alphie—her favorite porter, he hoped—and scanned her creds. His eyes blinked several times while he shifted from observation mode into animated stature.

"Inspector Sweetie! How lovely to see you again."

She ignored the stunned look on Mr. Galactic Mogul's face.

But her lips twitched just slightly when she responded. "Uh, yeah. Same goes." She actually bit back a grin. "Got anything for me this morning?"

Alphie tsked. "Girl, do I ever. What do you want first?" He produced a portable media device and handed it to her. "You've got three messages—two marked urgent."

The inspector pondered a moment. "Please play in order." She squared her shoulders, almost like bracing for impact.

Alphie shifted his gaze toward Marsh. "First is eyes only, priority flag."

Mr. Gray stepped away and told the inspector he'd go rustle up something caffeinated.

Alphie would swear her face softened a little. Interesting…

She shook her head and focused on the screen.

Alphie could resist nudging her. "He's got it bad for you, Inspector Sweetie."

Shyler rolled her eyes. "Just play the damn message, will you?"

Alphie cackled. He scored a hit with that one. But he ran the info as directed.

Shyler sucked in a breath. Twelve more survivors had succumbed to the toxin, but someone named Glib hung on by a thread. The docs estimated he had a thirty-six-hour window before he also would be past help.

The information didn't make her happy.

Not a lot of time to save her friend. Alphie hoped the next two messages put her in a better frame of mind.

He could tell she really wanted a save for this Glib fellow.

Alphie ran the next message without a command.

Spider's face appeared on the screen. "I hack— Er … dug deep as you suggested, not so gently the second time … and relayed my findings to the guild members. They've all agreed to use non-lethal methods when they find Dr. X."

Spider couldn't see Shyler, the message being pre-recorded message, but he answered the question that no doubt popped in her head.

"Uh, yeah, Dr. X is the code name we've given him. I've got kick-ass security and it would be a bitch to hack my system…"

Alphie didn't need to see the video to know Spider's brain whirred with information.

"But this dude is smart. It's a precautionary measure in case he finds a way to have ears on our communications."

Shyler stared at the screen and her shoulders relaxed. Alphie did a quick scan and almost laughed. Spider sat back in his seat. His space looked messy and chaotic, with posters of hot chicks in scanty clothes mixed in with image files of known criminals or people of interest. Shyler smiled and Alphie suspected she'd liked the hit of normal.

Spider shrugged. "So yeah, I'll update when I have something for you. Late."

She grinned while the screen blipped and changed.

Spider's face popped back into view. "Inspector, they tagged Dr. X. I tried the swank digs, but you were gone already."

Alphie would never reveal how Spider knew where she'd spent the night.

His voice lowered a little. "They're bringing X here, to the hall. Coordinates are listed on the lower screen, if Mr. Moneybags isn't sure where to find us. Time—" He glanced at his monitor. "0850. Out."

The inspector noted the location and checked the time. 0855. Spider had almost literally just transmitted the message.

Meaning the timing couldn't be better.

Shyler gave a nod. "End playback. Thank you." She handed the media device back to Aphie.

He tucked it into a side pocket. "Sure thing, Inspector Sweetie. Go get him." He winked at her. "And snag the other one when you're done. He's a keeper."

Shyler laughed, drawing Marsh's attention as he returned with two beverages.

He handed one to her. CaffCola.

"News?" He waited until she'd taken several nice long sips before asking.

Smart man.

Shyler nodded. "The guild has Baj. They're escorting him to the hall. I've got the location."

Marsh's mouth settled into a grim line. "Let's go."

Shyler's next move rather surprised Alphie.

She laid a hand on his arm. "You don't have to, you know."

Even Alphie caught the flash of worry that leapt into his eyes before his resolve kicked in.

Marsh looked down at her hand but didn't comment on the gesture. "He's my brother. I let him push the envelope too many times. So yes, I have to." He shifted around, keeping hold of her hand. "I might also be of use during the interview."

Alphie's circuits cringed. Oh, dude, not the right thing to say.

The inspector's back went up, but Mr. Mogul didn't let her jerk her hand away. "Listen to me. I know what you're thinking, and this isn't a dig at your impeccable skills." He turned at the next junction, leading her along with him. "I can be useful. Unless you hold an honors degree in chemistry?"

Alphie switched to observation mode to follow the conversation.

Shyler snorted. "Right. Honors degree in Chemistry. I haven't forgotten."

"Then let me help. I can get Baj to tell me everything." He stopped their progress, turning her toward him. "I promise you this. Please, trust me."

The inspector considered the bizarre idea, and slowly nodded. "Okay, but here's the deal. I want Spider's people posted outside the room in case Dogo tries to take a runner. And I'm going to be watching, listening, and if necessary, coaching you."

Alphie switched back to porter mode. Inspector Sweetie had Mr. Galactic Mogul well in hand.

It's so much fun writing this companion story! Alphie is hilarious and just what Shyler needed in her life while on Furlough 99.

That's it for this week. Catch everyone on the flipside.

Sunday Snippet: Dance with Destiny

Very busy week with work projects and client calls. My youngest was also in the UK over her spring break for a study abroad program. She's back in the States today.

Weather is all over the place, which is typical for March. We had sunny and warm followed by chilly and rainy, followed by brrrrr! and some flurries. I can't wait to see what the next two or three weeks brings to the playing field.

Had an okay week for television. I didn't get back on my regular schedule, but I did get a few things watched.

Started out with some Classic Rugrats. Only watched one episode but enjoyed it. I always like the episodes where Angelica is bested by the babies.

Watched another episode of Midsomer Murders. I'm kind of bummed Barnaby's degree in psychology isn't a thing anymore. I enjoyed that aspect in the first few seasons of John's tenure.

I finished an episode of Endeavor and enjoyed it. Glad to be back into this show. I'm a few seasons behind but I'll get caught up eventually.

Caught another episode of Classic Who. This one started a new arc and I'm excited to see where it goes. There might have been a hint about Ace's mom and I want to see if pans out.

Completed season twenty of Silent Witness. Really liked how the episode played out and I'm interested in how Nikki and Jack deal with the fallout of their trip to Mexico.

Watched another episode of Strangest Things. A couple of interesting features in this one, especially the bat bomb that destroyed an entire air force base.

Also started a new episode of The Mandalorian. I'll finish it up later today while I prep for the new season.

That's it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Dance with Destiny, the second novella in a trio of books.

Here's the mini-blurb:

A prophecy discovered leads to a dance with destiny. Quillan and Jeb have to find their way back to each other and might just tempt fate to do it.

And a sneaky peek…

Quillan Jaymes headed back to quarters after the shared-grief moment in the memorial hall. "Nice to be there for the old man." And, well, Jeb's dad kind of returned the favor for her.

She hit her rack and let the exhaustion finally claim her. Started to nod off when an odd feeling hit. A warm, comforting presence.

Her lips curved a little. "Reminds me of when Jeb would wrap his arms around me in the middle of the night." She smiled sleepily and drifted deeper toward slumber, thinking how people, namely her, took comfort in the strangest things.

A moment … or a minute … or an hour later, she jerked awake and could almost swear she'd heard Jeb call out her name. He sounded far away, but she'd know his voice anywhere.

Shaking off the weird feeling, she rolled over and tried to fall back asleep.

But … she heard it again. Louder this time.

"Quillan. Quillan."

Her eyes drooped and she burrowed into the pillow.

"Quillan."

The voice came again, but she didn't let it pull her from slumber this time.

"Quillan!!" The impatient tone Jeb used when he got cranky cut through.

She lurched upward and cracked her head on the rack above hers. "God dammit. I'm going insane." She swung her legs over the edge of the bunk, intent on finding Doc Marsh or a medic, hell anyone, to score some sleeping pills.

"Quillan. Talk to me, dammit."

She shook her head, disbelief settling in. "Doesn't it just figure."

Holy hell. Jeb Paldino had come back to haunt her.

She had to be insane. Her captivity had finally caught up to her—the only explanation she could deal with at the moment. Her head spun, her vision blurred, and Quillan took the only option left open. She tumbled sideways and passed out cold.

This story is coming together in a weird way, but I like where it's going. Quillan and Jeb are fun to write.

Sunday Snippet: Damn the Torpedo Flu

March entered the room with some wild weather, which isn't a big surprise. Still having the back and forth chilly then warm and lots of rain and wind. I expect nothing less from my birth month.

Got a lot accomplished on my work projects. I have a new one coming in sometime in the next week or two and I'm looking forward to jumping into another new one this week.

Didn't get a lot of television watched this week, but I got a few episodes in.

Finished up The Mandalorianepisode I started and thoroughly enjoyed it. My brother used to be obsessed with the sand people so it's fun to see them in action in this episode.

My Battlestar Galacticarewatch continued with "Act of Contrition." So many great moments in this episode and the acting is stellar. For a show that came out twenty years ago, I have vivid memories of watching this for the first time.

I also caught another episode of Only Murders in the Building. I kind of love where they're taking things at the moment. It'll be hard to top the first season for me, but I'm excited to see how this plays out. I'm really hoping it holds up.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Damn the Torpedo Flu, a sexy short that explores how a friends-with-benefits relationship goes much deeper during an outbreak of the worst flu possible.

Here's the mini-blurb:

When the torpedo flu hits the space station, Paisley and Dale are practically the last ones standing. Working through the crisis will bring them closer together, if they don't kill each other first.

And a sneaky peek…

Dale nudged Paisley back a little. "We'd better get some shut eye. Gonna be rough for a while." An understatement.

Paisley arched a brow. "My rack or yours?" She scooted off his lap and stretched.

His lips curved. "Mine." Rising, he chuckled. "See, you're already exhausted." Even if they only slept, he liked having her tucked against his side.

She bit back a yawn. "True. It's been a day and the shitty new didn't help." Walking to the hatch, she paused a moment. "I'm hoping to keep on most of the pilots in line and in the air." Crossing the threshold into the corridor, she waited for him to dog the door. "Maybe we should recommend they steer clear of the miners."

Dale fell in to step beside her. "That won't happen, but we can make the suggestion." The causeway didn't have much traffic and they made it to quarters in good time.

Paisley stopped by his bunk. "You don't think we can keep our crew from mixing with the civilians?" She stepped out of her fatigues.

Dale huffed out a breath. "Two squadrons of twenty each? The damage is probably already done." He shucked his pants, dragged his shirt off, and ducked inside the berth. "But we can minimize the fallout by making it clear contact should be kept to a minimum from this point forward." He held the blanket up for Paisley.

She finished undressing and crawled in beside him. "Dammit. I hate that you're right. Between the galley crew exposing one half and the civilians mingling with the other half … we're in for some dark days." Rolling into his side, she put her head on his shoulder.

Dale cupped her chin. "We work well in the dark." His mouth slanted over hers for a quick kiss. "But not tonight. Let's grab sleep while we can."

Paisley shuffled around, putting her back to his chest. "Right. We hit the ground running in the morning and find time for something more maybe later…"

Dale wrapped an arm around her. "Definitely."

This is a sweet moment before the ugly hits hard. Paisley and Dale will have to get creative to avoid succumbing to the nasty bug on the station.

Sunday Snippet: Cupid's Folly

February has been the oddest month. Between weird weather and random catastrophes, it's been a doozy. I'm kind of happy to be welcoming March in this week.

Finished up a work project and made really great progress on one of the others. I'm blessed with authors who turn revisions around in record time. It's very helpful and keeps their work fresh in my mind.

I also made some progress on my new venture. Only a tiny amount, but it makes me happy to chip away at my to-do list. Brings me a wee bit closer to be able to launch.

Didn't get a lot of television watched, but I did finish up Strangest Things. I have so much fun listening to the experts discuss the weird and wonderful artifacts.

I also continued my Battlestar Galactica rewatch. This week's episode was one of my favorites, "Bastille Day." Some truly excellent parallels about picking a side and being true to a set of core beliefs.

I also started season two of The Mandalorian. I hoped to finish up Ms. Marvel before starting another Star Wars show, but I want to be up to date for season three.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Cupid's Folly, a novella that charts the somewhat fraught course my main characters take to their happy ending.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Jinx Jersey just signed on as the XO of the Cupid's Folly, captained by Alrick Cates and he's given her fair warning she picked the worst time to start her new post and develop an attraction for him. The pleasure ship is booked solid for the couples' cruise and they don't have time for romance.

And a sneaky peek…

Jinx tamped down her nervous excitement and entered the captain's office. "Jinx Jersey, reporting for duty." She set the temporary transfer papers on his desk.

She kept her gaze on him, resisting the urge to let it dart everywhere. She loved getting familiar with new ships. And she had a new one she could check off her list—a great big civilian cruise liner.

Basking in the happy vibe, it took her a full minute to realize the captain, Alrick Cates had yet to greet or even acknowledge her presence. He sat behind his desk, a less-than-thrilled look on his face, and studied her. His brows furrowed and his mouth set in a deep, angry slash.

He tossed a hand up. "Unbelievable. I can't believe they sent someone like you." He rose and came around the desk, propping his butt on the edge. "This is the worst time to sign on. The couples' cruises get crazy and I don't have time to babysit someone who's too pretty for the work."

What should've sounded like a backhanded compliment instead sounded like Alrick Cates giving her shit. All before he'd even introduced himself. What a guy.

Not one to back down in the face of asinine rudeness, Jinx narrowed her gaze. "Excuse me?" How did they get off on the wrong foot when she'd only been aboard the ship for ten minutes?

Shaking his head, Alrick did a slow circle around her. "You're going to get hit on nonstop." He paused in front of her. "That magnificent rack of yours will act like a honey trap and, no doubt, have men frothing at the mouth." He made a disgusted sound.

Jinx ignored the blatant baiting. "It's a couples' cruise. My name is not included on the passenger manifest." Her job didn't include getting down and dirty with paying cruisers.

Alrick grunted and lifted his chin. "Right. The point is to become a couple while on the trip. Most of the passengers don't care if they hook up with other cruisers or crew." He sent her a withering look. "As long as they hook up."

Okay, fine. She didn't have experience with the horny crowds, but getting a solid gander at Alrick's physique had her wondering what had his shorts in a twist. Unless he thought she'd cramp his style.

Jinx rolled her eyes. "You can't tell me you don't receive a lot of attention. I mean look at you..." She let her gaze travel from his boots to his still-unhappy, but extremely handsome, face.

Broad shoulders, chiseled cheekbones, muscles in all the right places. Yep. He'd draw a good deal of attention. Until he opened his mouth.

He frowned. "I'm very good at putting women off." He waved a hand.

Jinx gave him a bland look. No doubt he is.

She tilted her head. "You're very cranky for a guy who hasn't hit thirty." She folded her arms over her chest. "Look, my record speaks for itself. I can handle—"

Alrick gave a rude snort. "Your record is notated by horny old men who can't see past your tits and teeth." He shook his head. "I can't believe they assigned you—"

Jinx didn't let him finish. She drew her arm back and let her fist fly. First impressions be damned.

I love this couple so much. Jinx won't take any of Alrick's crap and he's due for an education on how not to piss off his new XO.

That's it for this week. Catch everyone on the flipside.
