Romancing the Hop Aug.31-Sept.3 ~There are few things more romantic than a first kiss…

There are few things more romantic than a first kiss…

Hi, everyone, welcome to Romancing the Hop. At this stop, I’m giving away a $25 Amazon gift card. The winner will be announced Sept. 4th. Enter to win by reading this romantic excerpt from my paranormal romance, Until Darkness Comes, and following the steps below.

A guardian angel… A forbidden love… Eternal consequences…

Olivia Norton was born with a gift—a gift heaven has sworn to protect, and hell is bound to destroy. Her perfect world is turned upside-down when two handsome strangers, Max and Liam, step into her life. Olivia soon discovers that her ‘Mr. Perfect’ is actually a perfect nightmare.

The rules of engagement have changed and Liam, Olivia’s guardian angel, is forced to cross dimensional borders or risk losing the woman he’s sworn to protect. Suddenly, thrust into a world unlike anything he’s ever known, Liam isn’t prepared to come face to face with the young woman whose life he holds in his hands.

But nothing is as it seems, and secrets abound that will ultimately force him to choose between two impossibilities. Max will stop at nothing to finish what he’s started, and Olivia is soon plunged into a battle between good and evil. Her very life hangs in the balance as two forces fight to win her heart.

Until Darkness Comes Excerpt ~ First kiss…

Olivia took a brave step closer to Liam and cupped the side of his cheek, forcing him to look at her. “Then who are you? Surely you can tell me that. And don’t you dare lie to me, because I know you’re not normal. I’ve never met anyone like you before. Normal guys don’t act like you. Normal guys don’t look like you, and if they do, they’re usually more like…”

“More like what?” His eyebrow arched curiously.

“More like Max, I guess.”

“Well, I can promise you that I am nothing like Max. More like the exact opposite, to tell you the truth.”

“Why do you hate him so much? At first, I thought it was because he was my boyfriend, and that you were just jealous or something. But it’s more than that, isn’t it?”

“There’s a darkness in him, Olivia. Can’t you feel it?”

“I’m not sure how I feel when I’m with Max anymore. I used to feel…carefree—wild and reckless, you know? But lately, I’m starting to just feel…afraid. Like I’m walking on a tightrope and I’m about ready to fall.”

“I’ll catch you,” he whispered, slowly trailing his fingers down the side of her neck.

Her pulse beat erratically beneath his touch; she opened her mouth to say something, but stopped. Instead, she moistened her bottom lip with the tip of her tongue. His heated gaze fell to her lips and she felt Liam’s resolve snap. A wave of desire blasted into her and a soft groan of defeat rumbled in his chest as he lowered his head, capturing her lips in a tender embrace. His kiss tore through her like fire. What started out as tentative and sweet, quickly escalated to urgent and demanding as a rush of adrenaline flooded her veins. She melted into his arms, her lips fitting perfectly against his, like she was made just for him.

He tasted exactly like he smelled—faintly of cloves, delicious. She parted her lips, aching for more and instinctively he responded to her request as if she’d spoken it. Drawing the kiss deeper, his tongue brushed against hers. The more he kissed her, the hungrier she became, fueling an insatiable fire deep in her core.

Olivia wound her arms around his neck and pulled him closer. She’d never felt more starved and yet completely satisfied as she did at that very moment. He tightened his arms around her waist and pulled her against him, as if he couldn’t get close enough. Her feet left the ground as he molded her to his lean, powerful body.

Time momentarily ceased. She had no idea how long they stood there in each other’s arms as the floor of the boat rocked beneath his feet. The captain’s voice crackled over the speaker, announcing the end of their tour. A reluctant groan escaped Liam’s lips as he broke their kiss and  slowly released her. Olivia stumbled when her feet touched ground and his hand shot out to steady her…

ALL FOR LOVE by Ann Swann

Happy Release Day! Ann Swann

ALL FOR LOVE:

Liz falls in love with Quinn the moment they meet in college.  He professes to love her, too.  She begins to think about the future, but his past rips them apart.  What Liz does next impacts the rest of their lives, but she feels it is the only way… she does it all for love.

EXCERPT:

We were drinking iced tea at our favorite sidewalk café when the plastic plant exploded.

One moment Ronnie was checking my left hand to see if my wedding ring was still there, and the next thing I knew she was crawling across the blistered sidewalk in slow motion, reaching out for me.

Ronnie and I have been friends since college. She and Carol were my dorm mates. The best friends I’ve ever had. But college was a long time ago.

“How long do you think it takes to fall out of love?” I had just asked.

Stalling for time, Ronnie gazed about The Sidewalk Café. The strong breeze should’ve been cool, but it was dry and hot. Instead of our usual twelve inches of rain for the year, we’d received just less than two. The drought in our area of West Texas had been catastrophic; a simple spark from a piece of machinery could start a wildfire that might burn for days or even weeks. The weather channel delighted in telling us we were smack dab in the middle of the worst dry spell since the nineteen fifties.

In a way, it was fitting. I seemed to be smack dab in the middle of a drought myself. My nest felt as empty as the prairie, and my husband, who could’ve been the spark to light my world, was also brittle and dry. In fact, he was so dry he was practically nonexistent, like the prairie grass hiding in the earth, waiting for moisture.

Ronnie swished a fly away from her drink. “What’s going on, Lizzie?”

I hesitated. She was so good at taking the wind out of my sails. In fact, I’d swear she was using “wait time” on me, a technique we had learned in our education classes at the university about a hundred years ago.

Shrugging nonchalantly, I forged ahead. I really wanted her input. I still valued it every bit as much as when we were nineteen. “I think he’s screwing around again.” I sipped my tea. Mine was sweet, hers was not. She was usually the sensible one—at least when she wasn’t toasted on Mexican red.

She smoothed the shiny fall of hair off her face. It was still the fresh, reddish color of a blood orange.

“Are you sure?” she asked. “Or is it just suspicion?” She swirled her tea, giving me a moment to answer. The amber liquid climbed the inside of her glass like a tiny tsunami. She reached across the table to touch my hand. We weren’t very demonstrative anymore, not like when we were in school. I don’t know why, but I suspected it was my fault. A hug upon meeting was the extent of our physical relationship. Sometimes one of us would hug the other when we parted—it all depended upon our emotional altitude at the moment. But this time she wasn’t being demonstrative by clasping my hand, she was simply checking to see if my wedding ring was still in place. She turned my hand over and pushed it flat down on the table.

Interview with editor Connie Kline

I’m pleased to have Connie Kline, editor at 5Prince Publishing, with me today.  Thanks, Connie, for taking the time to do this interview.

Have you always wanted to be an editor?

No, actually I really just wanted to be a mom. I enjoyed spending time with my kids at the school and volunteering as much as I could.

How long have you been an editor?

An actual Editor, I would have to say for 2 years now. I was doing Beta Reading for years before that.

Tell us a little about working for 5Prince Publishing.

I love 5PP, it is a small publishing company that I was able to get into in the very beginning. Very family oriented, and everyone that belong to 5PP editors, authors, designers we are all family now.

What are your special genres of interest?

I like them all-so that is a hard choice to make.

Do you prefer sweet or spicy romance?

Again, nothing throws me, so bring on any of them.

Are there any genres you won’t contract?

Nope, I look at everything.

What are you looking for in a MS?

I look at an MS to see if the story is good, does it capture me, does it carry me through the whole story? If I don’t like it, the readers won’t.

What do you expect from your author-editor relationships?

An author-editor relationship has to be great. We are all humans, so both the author and editor have to have thick skin, so if one person says “I think it would be better this way or that” the other person doesn’t get hurt feelings. Have to always keep the lines of communication open, and be open to changes.

Let’s talk query letters. Ugh!! As an author, I find writing them terribly daunting. Are there and submission pet-peeves you care to share? Anything that will make you instantly reject a submission?

Yes, on the submission page of our website, we tell you specifically what we want. We want to hear your words, not a blurb from your book. We want to hear what your thoughts and feelings are, so we can get a feel for who the author is. Then we ask for a blurb from the book. A lot of times we only get blurbs, so it is really hard to see who the author is and if we can work with them.

How do you prefer to be queried? Letter only? Letter and synopsis? Writing sample?

I personally like letter and synopsis. Again, it goes to seeing who the author really is, and a little bit about the book.

What is the best way to contact you?

www.5princebooks.com for all new authors looking for a great publishing house and an Editor.

Thank you again, Connie, for joining me today. 5Prince had a lot to offer new and previously published authors. All works are release in ebook and paperback formats through Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Ebook is also sold through All Romance, iTunes, Sony and Diesel.

QueryDice #38: BRAVO, AUTHOR!

Reblogged from SlushPileTales:

The following is a query critique. Comments, suggestions and discussion are welcome and we hope you join in. I can only offer one opinion. The author of the query and I would love to hear yours.

Dear Ms. Ruth,

Thirteen-year-old Sabrina Tate has a visibility problem. The local mean girl sees her as an easy target, her parents see her as a weak imitation of her sister, and the cute boy in her English class doesn’t see her at all.

I love following this blog. There’s a lot to be gleaned from other writer’s successes and failures. As I’ve often said, writing query letters is an art and I like how Lauren Ruth breaks them down in Query Dice. Hope you find this helpful. Have a great day!

7/22/12 Six Sentence Sunday

Hey everyone, thanks for stopping by to follow Emily and Silas’ saga in Bonded in Exile. You’re comments are much appreciated. When you’re done reading, check out some sexy pic’s in my post below, Tattoos…Sexy or Cliche? I’m taking a vote ;)

Emily bit the thread free from the spool and threaded it through the needle’s eye. “You’re not gonna be able to carry me with that leg.”

“Wanna bet?”

She looked up, meeting his stubborn glare and mimicked his earlier words to her, “This is gonna hurt.” Without hesitation, she stuck the needle into his flesh and began sewing up his leg. She waited for a curse to come spilling out, because he was definitely on a roll with the profanity tonight, but he said nothing-he didn’t even move a muscle.

Tattoos…Sexy or Cliché? (photo’s enclosed in this blog post ~18 or older)

I admit it. I love body art. Especially when it’s on a terrific specimen of male perfection. And I can totally appreciate a strategically placed piercing or two as well. ;)  But as I edit Shades of Darkness, Book 2 Redemption Series, and get ready to wrap up Bonded in Ruins, Book 2 Atillian Warrior Series, I find myself during moments of writer’s block, daydreaming about the next alpha male in my Atillian Warrior Series. I think about what he looks like, sounds like, smells like… But what I can’t seem to decide, is will I tat him up, or give him that golden-boy glow. Hmmm… What do you think? Here are a few pics to inspire your creative juices ;) Thanks for your vote!

7/15/12 Six Sentence Sunday

Hi everyone! Welcome back to my SSS excerpt from Bonded in Exile. Thanks for stopping by and leaving your comments. Have a great day!

“Yeah, inconvenient little talent Riley’s got, huh?”

“Silas, you can’t go anywhere like this–”

“Give me the needle and thread,” he interrupted, holding out his hand impatiently.

“I said I’ll do it,” Emily grumbled, grabbing her mother’s needle and unwinding the thread from the spool as she spoke. “What are we going to do?”

“You’re gonna hurry up and sew my leg before I take that needle and thread from you and do it myself; then I’m going to carry you out of here before this snow gets impassable.”
