Margo MacDonald: Renaissance Woman Takes the Stage at Stratford's SpringWorks Festival
“Right here, right now, for one night only, I’ll tell you something special I ain’t never told no one before; I’ll tell you the truth” is the compelling opening to multi-award winning actor, director, and creator Margo MacDonald’s production The Elephant Girls. This show is a lost piece of women’s history, telling the tale about Britain’s most notorious girl-gang who terrorized London for over 100 years. Written and performed by MacDonald, she plays...
The Dogs Who Were Left Behind: A Charming Tale
The tale of two dogs who were left behind, by one of our editors (and one of my favorite writers), Winfred Peppinck, is a charming tale, one that is intended for both kids and their parents. You know those kind of books, where you are actually laughing while you read, because it is so clever? THIS IS ONE!
I love this book, partly because of the illustrations by our friend Mark Hicks (read our interviews with him hereand here). But also, I've never re...

Double Acts of Kindness

It’s what we hold onto most dearly when we reflect on our visits to foreign lands, long after the memories of sculptures and monuments fade. In my years of world travel, I’ve had the pleasure of being on the receiving end of many unexpected displays of good will—by a local resident, perhaps, who offers to walk with me to my des...

Scotland's Storyteller in Song: Archie Fisher

Music from contemporary songwriters, from traditional sources, from his own composing: this is what you will find on Archie Fisher's recording A Silent Song. That is a mix he has been stirring across his career. Now in his mid seventies, Fisher finds that music still draws him on. "It has only occurred to me relatively recently that the incentive to keep doing it is hearing that new song," he says. It might be a song he'd want to learn, he points out...

Dolly Levi at HOME in the Annie Russell Theatre
The Annie Russell Theatre at Rollins Collegein Winter Park, Florida, concludes its 83rd season with the iconic Hello, Dolly! by Michael Stewart and Jerry Herman. Set in the 1890s, Hello Dolly! transports us to the era of Annie Russell’s heyday, and the time period is not the only similarity to be found between Ms. Russell and the beloved matchmaker Dolly Levi.
Annie Russell, sweetheart of the British and American stage, spent the later part of the...

Teaching Kids to Love Art
One of the questions I hear most often is from families looking to expand their kids’ appreciation of art. I’ve written 7 Tips for teaching your kids to appreciate art museums to answer just that question.
But perhaps a more in-depth look is needed at how to teach kids to LOVE art, to feel at home in art museums, to be passionate and interested in art.
I wanted a broad range of answers for our Wandering Educators, and so I put out a call my fellow Family Travel...
