Split Rock Lighthouse, Lake Superior's North Shore, Minnesota
The Minnesota side of Lake Superior’s North Shore is full of iconic places, but one of the best-known has to be Split Rock Lighthouse, part of Split Rock Lighthouse State Park.
The lighthouse, sitting atop a dramatic steep stone bluff overlooking the lake, was built after a terrible 1905 storm drove 18 ships into the cliffs, causing 78 deaths. It opened in 1910 and operated until 1969, when modern navigational equipment made the lighthouse unnecess...

5 Great Resources for World Schooled Kids
The internet continues to revolutionize how we live life, redefine the terms of employment and entrepreneurship and rewrite the “rules” of education. It’s not lost on us that our family’s lifestyle, from our career choices to the kids’ schooling is made possible, and much easier by the existence of the internet and the myriad of resources that continue to blossom from creative minds around the world.
This month I’d like to share five of my recent fi...
5 Reasons to Take a Road Trip on Taiwan’s Northeast Coast
One of my favorite ways to explore a new destination is via road trip. With the freedom of the open road, the flexibility to go where you want, when you want, and the chance to stumble upon towns and experiences not indexed in any guidebook—well, what’s not to love?
It can be a little overwhelming at first, mainly due to the swarms of scooters on the road as well as the various interpretations of what a red light means, but once you get the hang of...
Soundtrack for Autumn: American Landscapes

The landscape of the United States is as varied as a patchwork quilt. Just like that patch work there are common connections, threads and lines and colors that pull through. The same is true of the work of musicians inspired by living and working in these varied American landscapes, too.
For this journey, come along with a trio of three men from southern Utah, two very different artists grounded in Texas, a Nashville based country star who took he...

Northern Lights: Top Tips for Iceland Photo Tours
Seeing the Northern Lights (aurora borealis) is an extraordinary thing – the sky crackles, with undulating swathes of color dancing across the sky. Where best to see it? Iceland, of course! With its wide open areas, lack of trees, low city lights, and plenty of room to view the sky, this is one of the best places on the planet to view the Northern Lights. If you’re a photographer (like me!), there are specific tips you’ll need to know, to ensure the...

How to Survive a Winter Beach
Most people, outside the west coast, seem to think beaches are only for summer. If it’s not sunny and 80 what’s the point of the beach? No one wants to go to the beach in anticipation of freezing their butt off.
Unless you’re like me and my friend Tyanna.
I wouldn’t say we prefer beaches in the winter (we’re not that crazy), but we spend more time together on a winter beach than a summer beach. But that’s also because her family owns a pool.
And beca...
Van Buren State Park

Pure Michigan ads, campaigned by fellow Michigander and actor Tim Allen, don't cover all the greatness that Michigan has to offer. Some places may be mentioned but will hardly put a dent in making someone want to visit. The camping grounds in Van Buren State Park is one of those places that Pure Michigan needs to take a closer look at. Located in South Haven, Michigan, Van Buren State Park is the perfect destination for nature to be your pl...
Creating a New Outlook on the World with International Experiences
International experiences are very valuable to have, because they give people a chance to learn about the world, and a good way to get those experiences is to work a job that has them. There are countless jobs in the world that provide international experience. Two of those jobs with international experiences that I would consider are travel writing for a magazine, and teaching English as a second language.
Being a travel writer would give me a chance...
