Drunken Mall Santa

This following is a guest post by ex-pastor Pat Green, cross-posted with permission from his blog Night Moves: Diary of a Chicago Area Cabbie ex-Preacher Man. The Science Behind ‘Genetically Modified Humans’

The media have been talking about “genetically modified humans” and “designer babies.” But what they’re really talking about is germ-line engineering: a process that could help eliminate heritable diseases. So why do some scientists want to pause the research?

Crystal with “Forbidden Symmetry” Found in 4.5-Billion-Year-Old Meteorite

Space

A crystal with an “unorthodox” arrangement of atoms has been discovered inside an ancient meteorite that crashed into a remote area of northeastern Russia thousands of years ago. This is only the second time a natural so-called quasicrystal has been found. The work is published in Scientific Reports this week.

Drone Captures Breathtaking Footage Inside The Worlds Largest Cave

Environment

Vimeo/Ryan Deboodt).

Hang Son Doong in Vietnam is the world’s largest cave. One of its chambers more than 3 miles long, 660 feet high and 490 feet wide. Hang Son Doong is essentially a microclimate; with its own river, jungle and beaches. Due to its sheer size and diversity of nature, Hang Son Doong would be impossible to comprehend from any other angle than the sky - so photographer Ryan Deboodt and his team spent 10 hours wondering around this incredible system of sink holes, sky lights and rivers with a drone. Check out the amazing footage.

Maps Have Been Lying To You Your Entire Life

Environment

The truth is that every map tells a lie, but they don’t all lie about the same thing. For example, Mercator projection maps—one of the most common in use today—exaggerate regions far from the equator. The Goode homolosine projection (pictured below) shows continents that are sized appropriately to one another, but with many interruptions and distortions of distance.

DNA Nanobots Set To Seek and Destroy Cancer Cells In Human Trial

Health and Medicine

This year, researchers hope that tiny robots built entirely of DNA will help save a critically ill leukemia patient. These DNA nanobots are designed to seek out and destroy cancer cells, while leaving healthy cells unscathed. So far, they’ve only been tested in cell cultures and animal studies.

17-Million-Year-Old Whale Fossil Gives Hints To The Dawn Of Humanity

Plants and Animals

A 17-million-year-old whale fossil stranded far inland in Kenya now sheds light on the timing and starting elevation of East Africa's puzzling tectonic uplift / Southern Methodist University

The East African Plateau is at least 1,000 meters (3,280 ft) above sea level, but millions of years ago, the area was underwater. Now, according to researchers examining a prehistoric whale fossil unearthed at these high elevations, the East African Plateau began to rise above sea level about 17 million years ago—around the same time highly variable climate and drier conditions began to drive primate (including human) evolution.

Huge Solar Storm Produces Spectacular Northern Lights

Space

Members of the Slooh expedition team have been busy bees this week, setting off to capture a live feed of the Northern Lights on Tuesday and also the total solar eclipse tomorrow from the Faroe Islands. Of course, we’re very grateful to them for bringing us some jaw-dropping footage, and we can’t wait for the big event tomorrow.
