Pharmacists can’t claim religion to deny emergency contraception, appeals court rules
by Reuters
The state of Washington can require a pharmacy to deliver medicine even if the pharmacy’s owner has a religious objection, a federal appeals court ruled on Thursday, the latest in a series of judgments on whether religious believers can opt out of providing services.
The ruling, from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco, came in a case filed by pharmacists who objected to delivering emergency contraceptives. The 9th Circuit overturned a lower court that had said the rules were unconstitutional.
The U.S. Supreme Court last year allowed closely held corporations to seek exemptions from the Obamacare health law’s contraception requirement.
In Washington, the state permits a religiously objecting individual pharmacist to deny medicine, as long as another pharmacist working at the location provides timely delivery. The rules require a pharmacy to deliver all medicine, even if the owner objects.

Skeletons From 400-Year-Old Gravesite Identified As Jamestown Leaders

A team of scientists singled out the names of the four men who died in Jamestown from 1608 through 1617. Donald E. Hurlbert.
In 2013, an archaeological dig in America’s first colony of Jamestown, Virginia, uncovered four skeletons at a 1608 church (the one where Pocahontas married John Rolfe). Now, after combining skeletal analyses, chemical testing, context cues, and genealogical work, a team of researchers has revealed the identities of the four poorly-preserved remains: They belonged to colony founders and leaders who sailed across the Atlantic, according to an announcement made at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History this week.

The most powerful aurora ever seen in the universe has been found by a team of astronomers – and among its many important implications, it could help us to discover what role these peculiar “failed stars” play in the universe.
T. Rex Teeth Had A Secret Weapon, And Just One Animal Alive Today Has It Too

Many of the planet’s most famous killer dinosaurs owe their success to deeply serrated teeth that specialized in tearing through the flesh and crunching on the bones of other dinosaurs. But not only did their teeth have saw-like cutting edges, the tissues within each tooth were arranged in a way that strengthened and improved the function of their fearsome chompers. The findings are published in Scientific Reports this week.
Ceres Is Shown In Most Stunning Detail Ever

A small spacecraft is shooting through the Solar System, dwarfed by the impressive objects in our universe – stars, planets and dwarf planets. Even though the spacecraft, named Dawn, is tiny in comparison to these objects, it has still sent back gorgeous, detailed photographs mapping out the caverns and craters on some of these cosmic beauties. Dawn's latest glorious image? The most detailed map yet of the dwarf planet Ceres.
Ceres can be found between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter in the main asteroid belt. It is made of rock and ice, including water ice.

Zookeepers have announced the death of one of the last five northern white rhino left on Monday. The death of Nabiré, a 31-year-old female, means this incredibly rare species is now one step closer to extinction.
Authorities at the Dvůr Králové Zoo in the Czech Republic have confirmed that Nabiré died as a result of a ruptured cyst, which zookeepers say was too large to treat.

Antacids are unspectacular when dropped into a glass of water here on Earth. A little fizzy show and then you knock it back to cure what ails yer.
Take this same, simple action to a space station, and a ball of fizzy water is now floating around.
As with all activities, everything’s way more awesome in space.

In what could be described as a stroke of mad genius, the work of an actual idiot or an overly enthused Breaking Bad fan, somebody built a meth lab within a federal research facility. And it exploded.
Reported to have taken place on July 18 at the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Maryland, the explosion injured a patrolling security guard, who sustained non-life-threatening burns, and has since resigned.
