Trump Channels Ken Ham
At a golf course he owns in Virginia, Donald Trump erected a historical marker claiming that the site was important in the Civil War, and that: “Many great American soldiers, both of the North and South, died at this spot. The casualties were so great that the water would turn red and thus became known as ‘The River of Blood.’ ”
Contacted by the New York Times, one local historian replied, “No. Uh-uh. No way. Nothing like that ever happened there,” and two other local historians agreed, though apparently less quotably.
Confronted with the historians’ insistence that no one died at any notable battle near the site, Trump told the reporter, “How would they know that? Were they there?”
Normally, the bizarre trail of falsehoods spouted by Mr. Trump wouldn’t attract much attention here. But when someone dismisses knowledge and expertise by saying “Were they there?,” my ears perk up.
An edited version of Ken Ham's "Were you there?" essay, including its original cartoons. From NCSE's archives.
You see, that question is a major part of the creationist schtick, especially from Ken Ham, the founder of Answers in Genesis (which is building a giant Ark amusement park to complement their creationist “museum” in Kentucky). He posed the question in the title of an essay he wrote for the Institute for Creation Research in 1989. He explained at the time:
Carl Sagan presents the Big Bang theory as if it were fact. We need to ask him the same sort of questions God was putting to Job: “Were you there, Carl, when the earth came into existence? Do you know anyone who was there, Carl? Do you know anyone who has all the information?” …
We need to ask ourselves this question: “Where do we put our faith and trust? In the words of scientists who don’t know everything, who were not there? Or in the Word of God—the God who does know everything—and who was there?
He still makes it a centerpiece of his public presentations, as in the video below (2011), or this account from 2006:
Evangelist Ken Ham smiled at the 2,300 elementary students packed into pews, their faces rapt. With dinosaur puppets and silly cartoons, he was training them to reject much of geology, paleontology and evolutionary biology as a sinister tangle of lies.
“Boys and girls,” Ham said. If a teacher so much as mentions evolution, or the Big Bang, or an era when dinosaurs ruled the Earth, “you put your hand up and you say, ‘Excuse me, were you there?’ Can you remember that?”
The children roared their assent.
“Sometimes people will answer, ‘No, but you weren’t there either,’ ” Ham told them. “Then you say, ‘No, I wasn’t, but I know someone who was, and I have his book about the history of the world.’ ” He waved his Bible in the air.
“Who’s the only one who’s always been there?” Ham asked.
“God!” the boys and girls shouted.
“Who’s the only one who knows everything?”
“God!”
“So who should you always trust, God or the scientists?”
The children answered with a thundering: “God!”
There’s no indication that Trump is particularly religious, let alone an acolyte of Ken Ham, so this may be a matter of convergent evolution between two men with limited respect for evidence and out-sized egos.
What’s Causing These Mysterious Radio Bursts From Beyond Our Galaxy?

Neutron stars are so dense that not even black holes can tear them apart. When one falls into a black hole, the black hole swallows it whole. Without material being disrupted, we have a hard time to tell such an event has taken place. At least until now. A new study has claimed that extremely powerful fast radio bursts (FRBs) are generated in the last instant before a neutron star collides with a black hole.

How Loneliness Can Be Deadly

We’ve all felt isolated at times, but the so-called “invisible epidemic” that is loneliness is about much more than ephemeral feelings of sadness. Doctors have known for some time that loneliness is associated with not only chronic illness but death, too. Now, scientists are beginning to unravel why this is, with the discovery that social isolation puts our body in “fight or flight” mode, preparing for social threat. This triggers a cascade of events that ultimately alter the production of white blood cells, leaving us vulnerable to disease.
David Tennant Explains The Theory Of General Relativity In This Awesome Animation

It’s been 100 years since Einstein proposed one of the most powerful scientific ideas of all time - the theory of general relativity. Over the century, his ideas have been continually expanded, critiqued and developed, in an attempt to explain the fundamental truths of the universe and what the hell it's all about.
But unless you’re a super-sharp physicist, his ideas probably leave your mind melted into a pale grey mush.
20-Year Study Finds That Corporate Funding Has Affected The Public’s Perception Of Climate Change

There is often a stark divide when it comes to climate change. a katz/Shutterstock
Climate change has long been a polarizing subject, with a gulf between those who “believe” in it and those who are “deniers” widening and becoming more intense in recent years. Some argue that this is because the science isn’t proven, or that there are doubts in the data, but a new study claims to have found the real reason that this rift exists: corporate funding.
First Macroscopic Quantum Entanglement At Room Temperature Achieved

November has been a great month for quantum entanglement fans. Not only was entanglement proven to be a fact of nature, but the first quantum computer code was written on an entangled system as well. Now, scientists from the University of Chicago were able to obtain a quantum entanglement state at room temperature in a macroscopic (relatively large) object.

How Ants Use Their Own Bodies To Make Movable Bridges

The ants form the bridges by grasping the one in front until they manage to span the gap. Dr. Chris Reid/The University of Sydney
Without a set plan or leader, ants are able to construct incredible structures based on collective self-organization. Even in the absence of a consistent leader, this allows them to create entire subterranean cities and structures using their own bodies. Army ants from Central and South America, for example, are renowned for forming living bridges to shorten distances to food.
Five Things You May Not Have Known About Lucy The Australopithecus

Some of you may have noticed an evolution-themed Google Doodle appear today; the more curious probably discovered that it links to Lucy, the name given to the reconstructed fossilized remains of an ape that stalked the plains of Ethiopia around 3.2 million years ago – roughly 3 million years before anatomically modern humans (Homo sapiens sapiens) officially appeared on the world stage. Today marks the 41st anniversary of her discovery.
