The Richest Moment

I baked bread yesterday, and served it fresh from the oven with homemade soup. ”This is one of my favourite suppers,” Gerry said. ”Mine too,” responded Makiya, munching on another piece of bread she snitched from my plate after asking with a cheeky grin if I was going to eat it. That was the richest

Two Roads

A long and lovely drive along country roads refreshes. Leaves are just barely hinting they’re soon to don their autumn cloaks. We drive past farms and fields and imagine how peaceful it would be to live out here. Gerry reminisces about driving this road with his dad when he first got his learner driver’s license.

Just A Quiet Moment

After a busy morning out and about that included a trip to Costco because I wanted to get some pretty fall mums (of course, we came away with more than two pots of flowers), we settle in at home. Gerry heads downstairs to check his hiking schedule and make plans, Makiya reaches for my MacBook

What did we talk about?

What did we talk about Before? When we went about our days too busy or not busy enough carrying burdens big and small with enough leftover to take weight for a time from those whose load was too heavy. What did we talk about Then? Before we became Us and Them. When we listened and

My Kitchen Counter

This is a photo of my kitchen counter last year on this day. To me, it’s a satisfying image that brings comfort to my anxious spirit. I’m not canning as much as I have in recent years. Rather, I’m relying more on my freezer to preserve the harvest and the bounty we get from the

Preparing

I thought by now life would have resumed much of it’s pre-2020 look and feel. That’s what the provincial “restart plan” told us, anyway. Instead, I feel like I’m in an old movie where the walls are slowly closing in around me. It’s heavy and it’s getting heavier and now we’re heading into the dark months.

A Slice of Silent Peace

Suddenly, I am alone. The girls are behind searching for rocks along the river, and Gerry is resting with his eyes closed at the car. I am struck by the silence and the peace of this place and stop to breathe prayer. For a moment, all that is, is here and now. I hold a stone

Peace and Reason

The world has been abnormal for so long that we’ve forgotten what it’s like to live in a peaceful and reasonable climate. If there is to be any peace or reason, we have to create it in our own hearts and homes. Madeleine L’Engle We talk almost daily, but the opportunity to chat face-to-face for

What I Need to Know on Monday, August 23, 2021

A local news source often prefixes its early morning social media posts with “what you need to know”. It gets my back up. I don’t like the news media telling me what I need to know for many reasons, none of which I’ll go into here. Rather, I scroll past and think about what I do need

Breathing Space

I’m sitting here listening to the sweet sound of rain. RAIN! At long last! The heavy weight of fire season is still with us but with many alerts and orders being rescinded and fires being brought under control, there is an easing of the burden. Skies, though not completely smoke free, are clear enough to
