Resolutions and Self-doubt…

Happy New Year! Happy New YearThis is the week for resolutions and new beginnings.  I have a series of resolutions (as I always do) I will write more, weigh less (writing is not easy on the waist line), and I will spend more quality time with the family.  I am like every other woman—filled with goals, aspirations and dreams to be the most perfect version of myself (and men wonder why we are so hard on ourselves).

I know I will fail at some of my goals, I tend to allocate for a little regression.  I may not lose the five (alright, fifteen) pounds I would like to lose, but I have accomplished one of my dreams.  It has taken years and there has been hidden pits filled with self-doubt and self-pity.  There have been days filled with so much greatness it’s hard to believe it is my life.  In the last few years I have become a published, and somewhat well-known, author.

And it all started with a simple goal—one little resolution changed my entire life.  It was simple, write a little bit every day and see if I could write a book.  I wasn’t an English major, a librarian, or a teacher (though I envy all of those educational backgrounds); instead I have my degree in Anthropology (with an emphasis in Archeology).  I was just a normal woman, looking for a change, and filled with a dream.

This is the Archeology site I worked at in British Columbia (this is however not my field crew but a subsequent year's).

This is the Archeology site I worked at in British Columbia (this is however not my field crew but a subsequent year’s).

This has in no way been an easy undertaking (like I said it has taken years—and will take many years to come).  There have been many more rejection letters than fan letters and acceptance letters combined.

This week marks a momentous occasion in the life of an author—this week (December 31st) my sixth book was published entitled, The Nymph’s Labyrinththrough Crimson Romance.  It has been featured in USA TODAY and has been accumulating tremendously wonderful reviews.  I couldn’t be happier.  This book is the first in The Nymph Series, a three+ book collection.  I am in the editing stages of the second book entitled, Montana Mustangs, which will be available later this year.

The Nymph's Labyrinth

The Nymph’s Labyrinth is the book that was in my heart.  The book I had to write because of my Archeology-loving background.  To me there are few things more fun than sitting in the bottom of a hole, dirty, sweat-covered, and searching for things that haven’t been seen or touched for thousands of years.

Blurb: A world shrouded in mystery and intrigue, the Sisterhood of Epione must not be exposed.

Shape-shifting nymph Ariadne Papadakis is tasked with keeping the truth of the group’s existence and their ancient mysteries far out of reach of the American archeologist, Beau Morris and his troublemaking son, Kaden. When forgotten and forbidden passions are awakened, Ariadne is forced make a choice – fall in line and continue to be overrun and pushed down by the sisterhood, or follow her heart and put Beau and Kaden’s lives in danger.

Can she have the man she loves or will the pressure and secrets of her past keep her from her heart’s desire?

Available at: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | and soon to Book Stores near you (will be available in paperback Spring 2013)

It is my hope for you that if you have a New Year’s resolution that you will see it to fruition (at least the most important of them).  That simple decision to try something new can change your life in ways you never thought possible.  The path won’t be easy, but keep in mind the possibilities that can be awakened when you make a little change in your life—your dreams can come true.

Happy New Year!

What people are saying about The Nymph’s Labyrinth:

Review by Mallory Heart Reviews:

5 stars

“Multi-published romance author Danica Winters spins a tale of a long-forgotten mythology come to life. Ariadne is a nymph and member of the Sisterhood of Epione, a group which preserves it secrets and has done so for millennia. When an American archaeologist begins to explore too deeply, Ariadne is tasked with stopping his progress. Yet her heart  tells her differently: this is the love of her life. Will she continue to fall in line with the Sisterhood’s directives; or will she throw out caution and surrender to the directives of her heart?
Ms. Winters makes mythology “real”; there is no need for suspension of disbelief, as she makes everything seem natural, possible, and worthwhile. Readers of both paranormal romance and romantic suspense will greatly enjoy “The Nymph’s Labyrinth.”

Imagine a World

4 Stars

“Such a wonderful, Greek mythology inspired book! The Nymph’s Labyrinth was fantastic.
I LOVE Greek mythology, so I delight in reading books inspired by it. And this book did not disappoint.
Ariadne, yes the one from the Theseus myth, was a lovely heroine. However, at the beginning, she’s kind of a door mat. There was a reason for that, so it didn’t bother me too much. Especially toward the ends when she toughened up and refused to let anyone run all over her. She’s a likable heroine. I felt that she was easy to relate to. Because of the curse on the nymphs, she can’t fall in love without putting anyone in danger, but, after millennium of never being able to be in love, she longs for the one thing that she can’t have. That element made her a sympathetic character that anyone can support.
Beau was just as wonderful. His life’s dream is to find the labyrinth and prove to everyone that all his research is real and not just some fantasy. Of course, that puts him at odds with Ariadne, whose job it is to make sure no one ever finds the labyrinth. But that doesn’t stop either of them from falling in love, though neither admits it at first. Their relationship was complicated, to say the least. But I love how it ended for them-and I won’t say any more on that subject :)
Beau was also a very sweet father to his son and it was absolutely adorable to watch. Honestly, he was just all around amazing. A truly lovely hero.
Kaden, Beau’s son, was a rather important secondary character. Though he was resentful at first because he hadn’t seen his father since her was 10-and he is now 18-he changes during the course of the book and becomes a lovable boy. I can’t say too much about what happens with him without giving away some important parts of the book, but I will say that Kaden will definitely win your heart.
The plot was a little slow at first, which made me knock off a point, but it picked up after the first quarter or so and kept me hooked. There are definitely a few surprises along the way the keep things interesting. And the ending was brilliant.
Once again, a wonderful, romantic take on Greek mythology! Any lovers of romance will love this book.”

Love In a Book Reviews:

4 Stars
First I must state I love Greek Myths, so when I saw this offer, I couldn’t say no.
Ariadne runs a museum with a secret the secret labyrinth and she’s a shape shifter on an adventure. She’s not what I expected, but I liked her.
Beau Morris reminds me of Indiana Jones, and what I loved about him. I don’t know the modern day equivalent on Disney, but back in the day, this meant ruggedly sexy and super smart, making him double trouble. Beau reminded me of that hero. He sold me on this story. I’d risk my neck for him, and hey I get the chemistry.
The whole curse because of a no to sex thing… for a second on the first page, I wondered if I signed up to read the wrong thing. Luckily I kept on reading, and enjoyed the story. I’d recommend this book, mostly because the hero hit just the right spot for me.

My Reading Obsession

4 Stars

What if the myths of ancient Greece weren’t myths after all? If you are an American archaeologist you have to find the proof to secure your financing and prove you aren’t a nutcase. That is what archaeologist Beau Morris is trying to do with the labyrinth from the myth of the Minotaur.

Ariadne is a nymph she and her sisters have been charged with keeping the secrets of the sisterhood and of her Goddess Epione, part of those secrets is a curse against any man that they may love.

I loved this take on the mythology of ancient Greece, I love to see more books taking on the more minor gods and goddesses that we don’t all immediately know about.

Ms. Winters takes the mythological beings and places them in modern society. We are taken on a wild roller coaster of emotions when Ariadne is torn between duty to all she has known and love.

I found the characters engaging and there rolls in the story for the most part clear, I enjoyed how the Minotaur was worked into the modern world a great deal.  I also felt that this was an emotionally balanced book all of the weight of the hard decisions isn’t just left to the heroine but Beau has some really hard issues of his own to deal with.

I am looking forward to the continuation of this series.

Paranormal Romance with Lisa Annesley

4 Stars

Danica Winters has written a book that stands out from the crowd due to her imaginative use of Greek mythology and snake-shifting nymphs. (Snake-phobics, fear not. Not too much is made of the snake-shifting.) The Nymph’s Labyrinth is like no other.

Beau and Ariadne are both likable characters that you’ll pull for. You’ll want Beau to save his reputation and reconcile with his son. You’ll want Ariadne to kick some ass and stand up for herself, and that’s her journey. You’ll want them to circumvent the curse and find their HEA. They both have much to lose, but they belong together.

There is much suspense as Beau and Ariadne face jealousy, grief, and danger together. You’ll find yourself reading “just one more chapter” again and again.

The Nymph’s Labyrinth is an original, strong start to The Nymph Series. The next book is Montana Mustangs, followed by Winter Swans.

Merry Christmas (of Less)!!

Christmas time is coming like a child hopped up on candy canes.  We have our Griswold family Christmas tree firmly planted in its plastic base and every type of ornament somewhat secured to its branches.

grinchI would be lying if I told you this is my favorite time of year.  The Christmas season comes in a firm second behind Halloween.  Halloween is simple.   Buy candy.  Make Costume.  Exchange candy.  Eat kid’s excess candy.  Hate that I gained five ‘chocolate’ pounds.

Christmas is an entirely different ball of taffy.  First, it’s not just one day or one week.  It’s at least a month of planning, decorating, buying, and talking down children from the ‘When is Santa coming?’ cliff.  Second, the thought of wrapping hundreds of pint-sized gifts, baking enough cookies to feed at least three unfed armies (and let’s be honest, most of the cookies will end up as fat deposits around my bottom), and trying to keep my children’s hands off of the thousands of tiny glass ornaments that sit around our house; well it all makes me want to scream—not much, just enough that the neighbors can hear that I’m losing my mind.  Do you think if I do they will come wrap presents for me?

I’m not the Grinch.  Nope.  Far from it.  Okay, not far from it, but I swear there are things I love about this season.  I love…Hmm…I got it!  I really love Christmas Eve (which is the night our immediate crew unwraps presents and my side of the family comes over). I love watching my kids’ faces perk up when I tell them they finally get to unwrap their presents (which they’ve been begging to do for the last month).  I love the laughter that my family shares as we sip well-spiked drinks and tell old stories.  I love the feeling of being together and the love that we have for each other.

I love Christmas day a little less, but almost with equal zest.  This is the day we make the run a few hours north to the in-laws’ house.  If it weren’t for the waking up at 4:00 a.m. to unload our stockings I would love it possibly a little more, but let’s face it—I’m not a morning person and travelling with chocolate-filled heathens makes me want to walk the two hundred miles instead of being cooped up in a car with them.

This year, in lieu of becoming the Grinch, I’m rebeling.  I’m not entering a department store to shop.  I’m getting all my shopping done in a matter of days instead of weeks (I hope).  I will buy only thgrinch hearte things necessary to let my loved ones know that I care.  I will not buy a single tie, all-in-one tool, or desk organizer (wait…if anyone has me on their list I could use one of those).  I will buy no animal-shaped chocolates that aren’t intended for my kids.  I will not eat my kids’ candy (or at least not more than three—no, make that four—pieces). I’m starting a new tradition.  I’m thinking about calling it “Christmas of Less.”  There will be no stress.  No unnecessary buying.  No ‘I want that’.  I instead want us all to remember what the holidays mean to us.  Is it about the stuff?  Is it about the million twinkly lights (don’t ask my husband that question—see Griswold above)?  Is it about the consumer-centric attitude that accompanies it?  No.  It’s about the simple things.  Love of children.  Love of Christmas.  Love of family.  It’s about the memories shared and memories made.  It’s the moments we cherish.

The Grinch Philosphy

So this holiday season I want us all to take it easy, cuddle up with a book, and enjoy the holidays.

Merry Christmas (of Less)!

Review of The Preacher’s Outlaw by Patricia Bates

Title: The Preacher’s Outlaw

Author: Patricia Bates

Genre: Western, Romance, Historical

Publisher: Decadent Publishing

Ebook

Words: 15,000

Purchase: Decadent Publishing |

Book Description:

Escaped convict Abigail Murphy’s on the run while plotting revenge on the man responsible for her imprisonment and the deaths of her parents. When she gets to Freewill,Wyoming, she gets lost in the bustle until she comes face to face with Daniel Yuleman, a man who could ruin everything.

Daniel is a man wearing two hats. Preacher and lawman, he’s been in Freewill for a couple of months waiting to pick up the trail of two killers when Abigail arrives. Told to watch her, he’s drawn by the shadows in her eyes. The closer he gets to her, the more dangerous it becomes. As her secrets come out, he finds himself fighting to keep her and their burgeoning love alive.

Can an outlaw capture the heart of a preacher turned lawman, or will they both end up on the run?

Excerpt:

Abigail cringed at the faint ping of metal on metal as she settled on the edge of a bench before the hotel. Nervous, she scanned the street. Experience was a bitter teacher, and she wasn’t about to be drawn into O’Neill’s game. Smoothing her palms over her skirt, she chewed on her lip. There were two things she needed—a blacksmith and a horse. Somehow she couldn’t see herself finding either one with everyone out on the street.

“Goodness, child, you look lost.” A shorter, plump woman bustled up to her, a big smile on her face. “Can I be of some help?”

Abigail leapt to her feet, her eyes widening. She stared down at the woman, her head coming up to her chin. “Um, thank you but no. I was to meet my brother, but sadly, he doesn’t seem to be here just yet. I think it best if I just—”

“Nonsense. You’re waiting to meet kinfolk, why not come in and sit and have a cup of tea?”

“Oh, I couldn’t.” Abigail glanced around, desperate for an opening. If this woman found out the truth, she’d get a one-way ticket back to Bucksaw, and she wasn’t in a big hurry to go back. “I spent the few coins I had for my ticket on the stage. I’ll just sit here and wait.”

“You poor child. Come inside this minute. Why, ain’t right a lady being left alone in this cold weather. Come, I’ll get you situated and we’ll wire your brother.”

The woman, Abigail shuffled inside, her gaze darting through the glass to appraise the street. Across the frozen road, she caught sight of a tall, dark haired man. His hat pulled low over his face, he lounged against a support column next to the marshal’s office. Blue eyes stared through her as he straightened his coat. The weak sunlight flickered and danced over the badge on his chest. Her heart in her throat, she hurried after the still chattering woman, the weight of those blue eyes heavy, almost as heavy as the fire licking through her blood. “Don’t be a fool, Abigail. He’s a federal marshal. He’ll string you up before you’d get a kiss out of him.”

Review:

Sweet Kiss Sweet Kiss Sweet Kiss Sweet Kiss

I enjoyed The Preacher’s Outlaw and give it four sweet kisses out of five!  It was a quick read and I finished it in one sitting.  I thoroughly enjoyed the characters–the mysterious Abigail and the sexy and somewhat dark Daniel.  It would have made a great novel had the characters been expanded a bit further, but I would recommend this book to my friends.  Patricia Bates did a great job in only a few pages.  I look forward to what she comes out with next!

Kate Whittle of the Missoula Independent has kindly written an article in advance of the event, spotlighting Danica Winters and Montana Romance Writers.

An Angel’s Justice,to be released by BTGN December 2012

“…Danica Winters, who says finding your niche is an important part of becoming a successful genre writer. Winters would know: she’s been writing paranormal romance for a few years, with published titles like Curse of the Wolf and The Nymph’s Labyrinth, and can boast about making Amazon’s bestseller lists.Haters can hate, but the romance novel industry—and it is an industry, with about $1.4 billion in sales in 2011—provides fun and escape for many readers, mostly women, while paying the bills for many authors, mostly women. Yes, romance novels are easy to make fun of, especially because our society loves to deride stuff that’s for chicks. So let’s dispense with the mockery, because romance authors face the same difficulty as everyone in a media-related job: The Internet has maximized our ability to create and share information, while devaluing creative work and imploding our paychecks. Winters says a book she released in May has already been pirated online at least 20,000 times, mostly by foreign websites…”

If you are interested is seeing the full article, please click here.

It is my sincerest hope, that I will see you at this event.  I will be there answering questions, signing books, but be prepared to laugh!
Thank you for your on-going support,

The Next Big Thing Blog Chain

I’ve been  invited to participate in an ongoing Blog Chain called, The Next Big  Thing.  Here’s how it works:  I post on my blog the answers to the  questions (below), along with links to 5 other writers.  This is a great way for you to meet a few of my writer friends!

The interview questions:

What is the title of your next book? My next book to be released December 31st, 2012 is entitled, The Nymph’s Labyrinth.

Where did the idea come from for this book? I am a trained archeologist and I have a love for learning about cultures and history.  I think one of the most interesting legends is about Ariadne, the Minotaur and the Labyrinth.  I used the legend as the basis for the book.  I also added some real historical events to the story line (as in the eruption of the volcano in Thera).

What genre does your book fall under? This is a paranormal romance novel.

How long did it take to write the first draft? This book took less time than any other full length novel I’ve written to date.  I think I was done with this book in a little under three months.  I think my background in archeology made it easy to write as this book didn’t take as much research as most of my other books.

What actors would you use for a movie rendition of your book? When I wrote the book I used story boards.  For the hero, Beau Morris, I used Bear Grylls as my character model.

I would also love to share the pics I used for Ariadne and Kaden  (unfortunately I do not know these people’s names).

What is a one sentence synopsis of your book? The Nymph’s Labyrinth is about a nymph (Ariadne) who is tasked with keeping the secrets of her sisterhood out of the hands of an American archeologist (Beau) and his delinquent son (Kaden) while also protecting them from the curse of her kind that forbids her to love–Can she keep them safe without falling in love?

Will it be self published or represented by an agency? This book (and the next two in the series) will be published by Crimson Romance, a division of Adams Media.

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre? There are a few archeology based books out there (think Chris Karlsen) and there are a few that are centered around the minotaur (Stephanie Drey); however I think I bring to the table some amazing characters, a well-written story, and an unforgettable plotline that makes this book truly unique.

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest? This book was initially intended to be the second book in my Veela Curse series (to take place after Curse of the Wolf).  However, Ariadne (the main character of The Nymph’s Labyrinth) simply did not want to be a Veela (Those darn characters certainly have a mind of their own!).  Thus, the Nymph books were born.  I’m currently well on my way to finishing the next nymph book which is tentatively entitled, Montana Mustangs.  If you love The Nymph’s Labyrinth, you will love Montana Mustangs.  I also have the next book after Montana Mustangs under construction.

Thanks to: The readers who have taken time to learn more about my next project!  I also want to thank one of my dearest friends, Author Casey Dawes, for including me in this blog chain!  Check her blog Stories About Love out by clicking here!

The Allure of the Short Story by Natalie-Nicole Bates

Since the release of my short story, Antique Charming, I have been consistently asked the same question—Why did I opt to write it as a short story versus a full-length novel?

The answer is actually quite simple. From the start, Antique Charming was always intended to be a short story. It was meant to be six hours in the life of Lizzie Morton. A sensual, delicious little bite to leave the reader asking questions, especially, just who or perhaps better…what exactly is Adam Nichols?

I am delighted that the story has sparked debate among its readers, even controversy. This was my intent. As a writer, it’s very easy to stick to a formula where all of the storylines are neatly tied up with pretty little bows by the end of the story. The curtain falls, all questions answered. But why is this an absolute necessity? Of course it brings a sense of closure for the reader. But why shouldn’t the reader be able to speculate her own conclusion to the story?

So, just how did Antique Charming come to be, and from my perspective, exactly what is Adam Nichols?

I am an avid collector of Victorian and Edwardian-era photographs. To me, there is much beauty in these black and white stills. Last spring, I found a photograph from an online seller that completely captivated me. The size of a postcard, but printed on a much thicker stock was the image of a funeral home (I come from a long line of folks in the funeral care business). Outside, a very handsome man stands proudly with his hands clasped in front of him, most likely one of the owners at the time. Although the photo is slightly faded, you can still clearly make out the reflection in the glass of a black funeral carriage tied with elaborate ribbons. The back of the photo reads in very elegant script, Week of Oct-11-1896.

Although the photo was pricy, I splurged and bought it for myself.

When I finally held it in my hands, I was in love. It was then that an idea occurred to me. What if a very lovely lady who is just starting out in the funeral business buys this particular funeral home, determined to restore it to its former glory. And what would happen if one night this woman was visited by the very handsome man in the photo who claims to still own the funeral home?

To me, the idea seemed like a good one. He wasn’t a ghost or a vampire. The closest I could describe him is as a dybbuk. In Jewish folklore, the wandering soul of a dead person that enters the body of a living person and controls his or her behaviour. But even is dybbuk isn’t quite accurate.

At the end of the day, it is you, the reader, who will decide just what Adam Nichols really is. I never expected so many readers to write and ask me for a full length novel. Perhaps at some future time I will speak with my publisher about turning it into a full novel. But for right now, my photographs are beginning to speak to me again and just maybe inspiring a few more paranormal spins.

Antique Charming/Natalie-Nicole Bates

The night he came home…forever.

Third-generation funeral director Lizzie Morton is about to have her dream realized. She has purchased the long abandoned Nichols Funeral Home and its upstairs flat, determined to restore the funeral home to its once former glory. Life as a Mommy Writer by Guest Kara Leigh Miller

When I tell people I’m a stay-at-home mom to five kids I get all sorts of comments. “Lucky you.” “Wow. Five kids? How do you do it?” “Five kids? I hope you’ve figured out what causes that.” “Bless your heart.” “I wish I could stay home with my kids.” “You’re so lucky to have a husband to support you.”

Then I add that I’m also a writer and I get comments like: “I wish I could stay home all day and write.” “I’ve always wanted to write a novel.” “I suppose you’ve gotta do something to fill your time.”

And of course I get the normal questions, too. “What do you write?” “Have you gotten anything published?” “Why did you decide to become a writer?”

Okay, that last question always stops me cold. First of all, I didn’t decide to become a writer. I was destined to be a writer. Ida Tarbell, America’s first great woman journalist, has a branch on my family tree. My Aunt Betty and my mother are both writers. Writing is in my blood.

So, why do I write? Every writer has a different answer to this question. Some do it because they like to. Others because they feel they have to; that the voices in their heads won’t give them peace unless or until they write. And some do it in the hopes of achieving fame and wealth. I’d be lying if I said I don’t want to make money, but it’s not the reason I write.

I write to inspire.

Now I know how crazy it sounds that an erotic romance author wants to inspire. But it’s the truth. When I’m feeling down, or feeling like I’ll never finish a particularly difficult scene, or feeling that my writing just isn’t good enough, I’ll pick up a book. And by the time I’m finished, I’m always left feeling inspired. It doesn’t matter what genre the book was, I’m inspired because the author achieved something that is very difficult to do. They wrote a book, edited a book, got a book published, and got it into my hands. Any author will tell you that’s not an easy feat.

For any aspiring author out there, for anyone who has always had the dream of writing a book, but don’t think they can, I want them to close my book and feel like they can do it. I want to be somebody’s inspiration. That’s why I write.

Author Bio: Born and raised in the small town of Mexico, New York, Kara was an only child who was forced to find ways to entertain herself. Playing make believe with her Barbie dolls and stuffed animals was her first real taste of storytelling before she became old enough to develop a love affair with the written word.

In early 2010, Kara picked up her very first erotic romance novel, and she was instantly hooked. She loves to write contemporary romance, erotica, and young adult romance. Currently she has several full-length novels in the works, a series of novellas, and a handful of short stories. Kara is an active member of the CNY Creative Writers Café and the CNY Romance Writers.

Today, Kara resides in New Haven, New York with her husband, five kids, and three cats. When she’s not reading or writing, she’s thinking about reading and writing. And when she’s not doing that, she’s spending time with her family and friends.

She disappeared on him right after prom and again after they’d spent one hot night together several years prior. He was going to make sure she didn’t get away from him this time. There’s only one problem though: Cooper is a cop and Kynlee has a strict rule to never date a cop. Can Cooper convince Kynlee to give him a chance or will she run again?

PROLOGUE

May 1996

Junior Prom

Kynlee glanced at the clock. Her excitement dwindled as she realized she had less than an hour left before prom was over and before she had to say goodbye to her date. She still couldn’t believe he’d asked her to the prom. Cooper Grant—star basketball player, top in their class, and one of the hottest guys in the entire school. But, soon, she’d have to say goodbye to him, the few friends she’d made, and the City of Oswego which she’d grown to love in the short time she’d been there. She cursed her father for taking a job with the FBI.

“Why so serious?” Cooper asked as he sat beside her, the too-large papery tablecloth crinkling around his knees.

Kynlee smiled. “Just can’t believe prom is almost over.”

“I know,” he said with a smile that melted Kynlee’s heart. “Bryce is having a post-prom party. Wanna go?”

“I’d love to, but I can’t. Curfew,” she said with an apologetic shrug. She still hadn’t told him that tomorrow morning she was boarding a Virginia-bound plane and that this would be the last time they’d see each other. What was the point? It wasn’t like she owed him any explanation. Prom would be their first and last date.

“Dance with me?” He stood and held out his hand.

Kynlee followed him to the dance floor and savored the feel of his arms around her as they swayed back and forth to the slow song. That night had been perfect. She couldn’t have imagined a better way to spend her last night in New York. Kynlee sheepishly looked up at Cooper—who stood a full foot taller than her—and saw the twinkle in his eye a moment before he pressed his mouth to hers.

March 2000

“Hey, sis, you coming?” her brother, Josh called from the car.

“You go ahead. I’ll catch up later,” Kynlee said, staring at the hole in the ground they’d just put her father in. He’d died a week ago and it was the first time she’d shed any tears. She was just so damn angry at him. Angry that he’d joined the FBI, angry that he’d spent more time in the field the past two years than with her, angry that he’d let himself get shot. And her brother was going to join the NYPD. In honor of their father, he’d claimed. “Yeah, right,” she mumbled.

“Kynlee?”

She spun around in her chair and came face to face with those unmistakable baby blues. “Cooper?” She nearly gasped.

“I saw the obituary in the paper. I wanted to pay my respects and, well…” He looked down. “I was hoping I’d get to see you again.”

He wanted to see her again? Kynlee’s lips started to tremble and for the first time since her father’s death, she cried. Cooper hugged her and she buried her face in his neck. He stroked her hair and she cried harder.

“Do you want me to give you a ride somewhere?” Cooper asked after a while.

Kynlee wiped her eyes and nodded. “We’re staying at the Holiday Inn next to Dunkin’ Donuts,” she said. “But I don’t want to go back there.”

“My parents are out of town.”

“Okay.”

***

Kynlee tip-toed around the room and gathered her clothes. She stopped at the bed and glanced down. A small red spot stained the sheets—proof that she’d given her innocence to Cooper the night before. She smiled. It’d been so much better than her friends in Virginia told her it would be. They’d all told her it would hurt; that she wouldn’t enjoy it until after she’d done it a few times, that it would be quick, and that she wouldn’t have an orgasm because the man would be too worried about himself. It had been nothing like that with Cooper. He’d been so gentle and attentive.

“Bye, Cooper,” she whispered to his naked sleeping body before leaving the room. She got dressed in the hallway before digging out her cell phone and calling a cab. Her heart broke as she left his house and instructed the cabbie to take her to the airport. Tears coursed unbidden down her cheeks. For the second time in her life, she was forced to leave the one and only man she loved.

As a forensic accountant for the FBI, Ryan Blake was unfortunate enough to be the one stuck going to the Aurora Island Resort to determine who’d been stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars. To anyone else, being assigned a job on a tropical island would be a dream come true. But this tropical island happens to be owned by Richard Blake–Ryan’s father–who is convinced that the resort manager is the one stealing. Ryan vows to get the job done as quickly as possible so he can go home. Until he meets Ashleigh Malone–the woman his father thinks is stealing. She’s smart, sexy, and cold as hell towards him. Ryan now had two missions: prove to his father that Ashleigh isn’t stealing and get her into his bed. Hopefully forever.

Chapter One

Ashleigh Malone

What the hell had I been thinking? There was no way I could be both the manager and accountant for a growing luxury resort. Yet, every time I thought about handing over the finances to someone else, I broke out in a cold sweat. Mark had done a number on me financially, and after two years I still wasn’t over it.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t my call anymore. The owner and my boss, Richard Blake, had decided to hire a professional accountant, and I’d all but begged him to let me hire Meghan MaCayan—my best friend from college who ran her own successful accounting firm. It hadn’t flown. I was told that it was a conflict of interest to have a friend working in the accounting department. I remembered laughing at him. Not my proudest moment, but the absurdity of his statement had shocked me. Letting a respectable accounting firm take over the finances was a conflict of interest, but allowing me—the resort manager—to handle the finances had been fine. I’d learned that the decision had been made yesterday. Richard had hired an accountant to take over, and they would send him to see me. I guess I had no choice but to deal with it.

“Excuse me, Miss Malone? There’s a Mr. Blake here to see you. He claims he’s the new accountant,” my secretary, Claire, said from where she stood in the door.

I rolled my eyes. “Send him in.” Richard wasn’t wasting any time, was he? I moved stacks of paper from one side of my desk to the other in a feeble attempt to make it appear neat and organized. It was more than just a nervous habit. I thrived on order and organization and schedules. I knew that and did nothing to quell it. In fact I was so preoccupied that I hadn’t noticed him walk in. But when I finally did notice…boy did I notice. I’ll be the first to admit that my social life leaves a lot to be desired, but I do like to read. A lot. Mostly romance, and even though I’d read about it hundreds of times, I still wasn’t prepared for my reaction to him. My jaw hung slack, and my throat went dry.

He was tall, well over six feet, with brown, wavy hair that just barely grazed his broad shoulders, and he had naturally tanned skin. Black pin-striped Dolce and Gabbana slacks hugged his hips. A black silk tie hung down the front of his white button-up shirt that was pulled taut across his muscular chest. There was no denying the stir I felt south of my waist. He was a gorgeous man—a man who belonged in a place like this. And I knew that there was no way he could be the new accountant. Accountants didn’t look like that. Accountants were weak looking, geeky, and wore glasses. Didn’t they?

Deep brown eyes stared at me intently as a self-assured smirk pulled at the corner of his mouth. I hated smirking men. But what I hated even more was that he looked damn sexy doing it. Confidence, arrogance, and the hint of being a smooth operator oozed from his pores. He reminded me too much of Mark. I disliked him immediately.

“Are you Ashleigh Malone?” he asked.

I cleared my throat. “Yes, and you are?”

“Ryan Blake,” he said, stepping farther into my office.

I stood, and an involuntary grimace contorted my face as I shook his hand. An accountant with rough, calloused hands? I couldn’t help but wonder what he did in his free time to make his hands so rough. A shiver worked up my spine, and I pulled my hand from his. “Please, sit,” I said, nodding at the chair across from me as I sat.

Once he sat, I studied him for a moment. Ryan Blake. And then it hit me. Richard Blake. Ryan Blake. I couldn’t believe Richard had hired his own damn son! “So, Mr. Blake, tell me a little about yourself.”

He grinned. “What is this? An interview? I was assured that I had the job, Miss Malone.”

I gritted my teeth. “Yes, I’m sure you were.” There was a sneer to my voice that I hadn’t intended. “And I’m sure you were told that I would be your direct supervisor.”

He nodded.

“I like to know who is working for me. Now if you don’t mind,” I said as I began to move papers around on my desk again.

“Well,” he said, folding his hands in his lap. “I attended Harvard Business School where I received my doctorate in accounting and finance. Upon graduating, I worked for Congressman Bouchard and then took a position with the University of Hawaii.”

“Why did you decide to leave the university and come here?” I met his gaze and noticed he was watching me shuffle papers. I stopped and folded my hands on top of my desk. He shouldn’t make me so nervous.

“It was time for a change. I don’t like being cooped up in an office. I prefer to be outside. The Aurora Island Resort just seemed like a good fit,” Ryan said.

“If you like the outdoors so much, why did you devote your life to a career that requires you to be cooped up inside?” I asked with a smile.

“Because numbers don’t lie. They are simple and constant.”

He had a point that I couldn’t argue. “As I’m sure you know we are very customer oriented, and even though you won’t have any direct contact with our guests, you are officially an employee and therefore eligible for a bungalow rental on the other side of the island. Shall I set you up with one?”

“Is that where you stay?”

His question caught me off guard, and I blinked several times. “Uh, yeah. Why?”

“Then yes, I’d like one.”

My heart rate accelerated, and I had no idea why. Sure, he was sexier than any man I’d seen in a long time, but so what? He wasn’t a piece of meat, and I wasn’t looking to get involved anyway. Besides, he was my employee. And the boss’ son.

“You’ve been handling the books thus far, correct?”

I nodded.

“Then it looks like for the next few days we’ll be spending a lot of time together.”

I stared at him. “Excuse me?” Why did the idea of spending time with him excite me so much?

“You’ll have to bring me up to speed on the books and how things work around here,” he said.

I sighed. “Right, of course.” I hoped my disappointment wasn’t too obvious. Then an idea struck me. It was something I knew I shouldn’t have said, but I just couldn’t stop myself. “It’s company policy that bungalows are for employee’s only. Spouses, children, and pets are not allowed.” Okay so that was an outright lie, but what were the chances he knew that?

Ryan smiled at me. A full, wide, bright-toothed smile that touched his eyes, making them lighten a shade, and sparkle. It was breathtaking. “Good to know,” he said.

I stood. “Shall I show

you to your bungalow or will you be making other arrangements?”

When he stood, he towered over me. It should’ve been intimidating, but it was oddly comforting.

“Lead the way.”

“You first,” I said. He walked in front of me, and my gaze drifted to his ass. It was firm and very well showcased by his slacks. He’s my employee and the boss’ son. He’s my employee and the boss’ son. Those words would quickly become my mantra.
