Looking For a Pet?
I have described my dog Zoe as an angel sent from heaven to bring joy into my life. She is so precious to me.
I was in my early to mid twenties when I got Zoe. My wife and I decided we wanted a chocolate lab, so we found a reputable breeder. Before we knew it, we had an eight week old puppy, and she has enriched my life every day since.
So now, I find myself at forty years old questioning my choice to get a dog from a breeder. There are rescue groups for every breed of dog, and animal shelters are packed with pets in need of homes. As I ponder this, I blame my decision on my own ignorance. I simply did not know how many animals are killed every day. Every pet bought from a puppy store or breeder, equals a pet from a rescue or shelter that must be killed. I had never considered that before getting Zoe. All of my cats are rescues, and they are perfect fits into our family.
I would never trade the experiences I’ve had with Zoe, but I now know I made a bad choice. I was uninformed. So let’s spread the word and make sure people are informed!
I won’t go into numbers of pets killed every year, but the numbers are staggering. And you would be surprised how many of those are owner surrenders, where the pet became too inconvenient for the owner. Pets are a lot of work, and require a lot of time and money. If you go on a trip, someone needs to take care of your pet. If you work all day and leave your dog at home, he will likely get bored and chew something up.
If you can’t take care of a pet, don’t get one! If you are ready for that commitment, you are in for years of love and warmth from the best friend you can imagine. Just don’t make the same mistake I made. SAVE A LIFE! Rescue a pet in need of a home.
There are generally adoptions at the local pet supermarket every weekend (for me it’s Petsmart), plus rescue groups and animal shelters in every county. There are no shortage of places with tons of animals in need of rescue. If you’re looking for a place to start, check out Best Friends Animal Society; a great group with global reach. But I’m sure you can find a place right around your corner with a friend that will be perfect for you.
A final note. Thank you to my sister Enger who is a hero in the pet saving world Love you sis!

That Pet Finder Kid – Blurb
I just finished the final rewrite on my latest middle grade novel titled “That Pet Finder Kid – Catnapped”. It’s ready for the editor. Last night I sat down and contemplated the “blurb” for the book. Let me know if this description lures you in:
Have you ever felt your pets are your only true friends? That’s exactly how thirteen-year-old Chet Parker felt every day of his life. After failing at sports, music, and almost everything imaginable, he gave up on ever finding his place in the world. But thanks to an accidental dose of modified dog DNA, things were about to change for Chet. With a new found connection to his six month old dog Zoe, Chet learns that Mr. Fluffy Pants, the cat of the most popular girl in school, has gone missing. Will Chet’s off-the-wall investigative methods drive him further down the social ladder? Or will they lift him up to claim his spot as “That Pet Finder Kid”?
A delightful detective story, sure to melt the heart of every pet lover.
So what do you think? I look forward to hearing your comments.

Giveaway is now over :-(
Congrats to the winners, this giveaway is now over
Congrats to the winners, this giveaway is now over
My last post was about the $75 giveaway, but I thought I’d make a quick addition.
To go along with the giveaway, I was lucky enough to get a few great reviews from a few talented bloggers. I thought it might be fun to make you suffer through a few my favorite pieces of these reviews before getting to the giveaway at the bottom of this post
First, from NonMom (the gracious hostess of my giveaway):
“For the Indiana Jones and yes, dating myself here, Goonies fans too, this book will grab you and take you for a fun ride only lacking the ‘Truffle Shuffle’, but you can play ‘Goonies are Good Enough’ by Cyndi Lauper while you read and it totally works!”
“I know that a lot of parents are looking for a book that fills a gap between interest to them and their munchkins, this will definitely fill that.”
Check out the rest of NonMom’s review here:
Next, from mamacravings:
“Clements brings a fresh take and bold new adventure to the next generation of mystery and adventure enthusiasts.”
“Gasparillia’s Treasure is a teacher’s dream. This book is funny, relatable, and has cover-to-cover adventure. Not only will students be drawn into the story, the brilliant layering of history will inspire students to seek out their own adventures.”
“Gasparilla’s Treasure tackles relatable issues in a relevant way. Bullies, first crushes, and disagreements with parents are those touchy topics that are difficult to tackle in an age appropriate manner. However, Clements does this beautifully.”
Check out the rest of Mamacraving’s review here:
Next, from BewilderedBug:
“…managed to tickle that little part of my brain that is fascinated by the realistic mixed with the imaginary. Not to mention that Gasparilla’s Treasure was written spectacularly with an captivating plot, exciting characters and just a touch of intrigue that fascinated me completely”
“– with Josh’s comic relief, Trip’s innocent infatuation, Trip’s Mom’s motherly worrying, Josh’s geeky clumsiness and all the ins and outs of the high school experience (while um…searching for treasure?), the book is gold. Pure. Gold.”
Check out the rest of BewilderedBug’s review here:
And Last, from A String of Pearls:
“‘Gasparilla’s Treasure’ has all the key ingredients for a rollicking adventure: a hidden trunk, family stories of a Pirate’s treasure, a determined grandfather, a more determined grandson with loyal friends and the journey of a lifetime. All this and more will engage young readers.”
“Get the book, grab your kids and share in this wonderful adventure. Sure, they might think reading is a bit old-fashioned, but Scott Clements has written such a visual tale they will likely not even notice the lack of a screen.”
Check out the rest of String of Pearls review here:
And finally the giveaway. If you are interested in winning the $75 gift card to amazon.com or one of many versions of my book, this is what you are looking for

I was looking for a way to spread the word about my adventure book, Gasparilla’s Treasure. I tried a couple of forms of paid advertising and promo, and they didn’t really get me very far, so I thought, “why not spend the money on a giveaway instead of advertising?” So now, I might just be paying you instead of some pay per click add or promo service.
The top prize is the $75 gift card to Amazon, and there are various versions of the book up for grabs too. The giveaway is run through rafflecopter, so it’s safe and fair. Excitement Over Audio Books!
Hey guys! The audio book version (or books on tape version) of Gasparilla’s Treasure is now available on audible.com. Which has me extremely excited over audio books right now. Audible.com is the site where I get all my audio books for passing time in the car. They are an offshoot of Amazon.com, and they have the audio book thing pretty well figured out. I have listened to about 50 audio books from audible, and absolutely love it!!!
Here’s how it works. You get the ap for your phone, and you download the book right to your phone or ipod. Or it will work with most any mp3 player or on the computer. The ap allows you to shop for books, download them, and play them. I not only listen in the car, but also listen while mowing the lawn, or going for a walk. If the narration speed isn’t to your liking, the ap allows you to speed it up in varying degrees. It’s really quite ingenious.
Audible currently has a special running where new members get one “credit” a month for $7.49 for the first three months, cancel any time. Check out the deal here. A “credit” gets you one audio book. So let’s say you want to listen to “The Hunger Games” series (which I did, and they are quite good), you can do so for only $7.49 each. That’s a bargain for an audio book! Or listen to another series I absolutely love. The “Peter and the Starcatchers” series which is narrated by the amazing Jim Dale. His voice talent will blow you away!
I listen to so many audio books, that I subscribe to one of the other plans listed here, which is 12 credits for $149.50 per year. Then I browse around and look for books I find interesting. You can sample a bit of the narration to make sure you are happy with it before you commit. I am always pleasantly surprised with what the narrators bring to the story. It really is a treat!
Now for the main reason I am so excited!!! My audio book, Gasparilla’s Treasure, became available today on audible.com (check it out here). Narrated by the amazing Glenn Hascall. And if you sign up for any of the plans mentioned earlier, and make one of your first three purchases my book. I get a $25 “Bounty” fee from audible! That’s right… for every member who takes advantage of the $7.95 per month for 3 months, I get $25! Plus, the audio book is really great! So if you’ve ever been interested in trying out audio books, now’s the perfect time
Either way, take a moment to check out Gasparilla’s Treasure on audible and listen to a bit of the preview. I think you will enjoy Glenn’s amazing work on this audio book!
