I am a Friend of the National Year of Reading
This year in Australia has been designated as the National Year of Reading. It is about Australians becoming a nation of readers.
The websites states:
“Nearly half the population struggles without the literacy skills to meet the most basic demands of everyday life and work. There are 46% of Australians who can’t read newspapers, follow a recipe, make sense of timetables or understand the instructions on a medicine bottle.”
The National Year of Reading has identified three goals:
·“For all Australians to understand the benefits of reading as a life skill and a catalyst for well-being;”
·“To promote a reading culture in every home, and”
·“To establish an aspirational goal for families, of parents and caregivers sharing books with their children every day.”
Friends of the National Year of Reading are going to represent, promote and support this initiative. The aim is to encourage people to get involved in reading during 2012 in many ways.
There will be various people and organisations involved such as libraries, schools,publishers, government, media and writers just to name a few.
The many activities associated with the National Year of Reading 2012 will allow people of different ages and backgrounds to be involved.
In this campaign, events and inspirational programs will be hosted hoping to share a passion for reading.
