The child and I must survive, somehow, for at least that long.
If you can not see this chirbit, listen to it here https://chirb.it/22vOvG
Tied to the back of the chair by a rope that cuts into one shoulder, Timmy draws his knees to his chest and wraps his free arm around them. His face is awash with tears. Being shackled to the closet rod, I itch to put up fight, but if I do, Paul will retaliate—as he’s threatened to do—not only against me but against the child, too. So instead of resisting I pray, as fervently as I never did before, for someone out there to pay attention, to listen to the distress call I sent earlier. It should have gone not only to my boyfriend, Michael, who is on the airplane now, but also to the sheriff’s officer, Joe Miller, who is on the case. Did he get my call? Why isn’t he here already?Paul tugs at my chain, making sure I’m tightly restrained. I breathe through the pain, through the sharp stings caused by having my elbow twisted behind me in an unnatural way. Clearly basking in the demented pleasure of seeing me suffer, “I can smell you,” he says. “What have you done, Ash darling, what have you put on to turn me on like that? Some kind of deodorant?”There is nothing I can say to that. What he smells is fear.“It goes right to my crotch,” he adds, now in a hoarse voice. “What a zinger!”I ignore him, but not the suffering. How can I take my mind off it? I tell myself, you’re not here. Go elsewhere. Drift off. Focus on something else. No, that doesn’t work.Help. Yes, focus on that.Right now, my boyfriend is on his way. Airplane mode blocks the connection to cellular networks. With no internet access, he won’t be able to even notice my call till he lands. The flight time LAX to Clearwater, Florida is about four and a half hours. Add to that a cab ride from the airport to my place. So, in the best-case scenario, Michael may arrive about five hours from now. In the meantime, if no one else comes to rescue us, the child and I must survive, somehow, for at least that long.

With every footfall, I tell myself that it’ll be all right
If you can not see this chirbit, listen to it here https://chirb.it/7fk3H2
My pulse is hammering in my ears as I swing away from the car and take my first step across the road. There’s no reason why I should tiptoe my way back—after all, the so-called Dr. Patel is expecting me—but I do, out of fear. With every footfall, I tell myself that it’ll be all right. Nothing bad will happen to me. My boyfriend will watch over me. Even if I find myself in some kind of trouble, he’ll see it on his cellphone and call the police at once. Yes, it’ll be all right. As I pass under the lamppost, steps come rasping over the asphalt behind me. Here comes a tap on my shoulder. I turn around. Michael looks pale, but somehow he manages a faint smile.“Wait,” he breathes, handing me a pair of my elegant high-heels, which he must have found in the back of his car. “You must look your part. Better change into these.”Standing on one foot, then the other, I take off my ballerina flats. “You make me feel like Cinderella, only in reverse.”My attempt at humor is a bit clunky, but we both laugh. Nervously.Despite being aware of how dangerous Kabir is, Michael makes no attempt to stop me. Nor does he even warn me against going forward with this ill-advised date. Saving our friend, Karishma, is now our top concern. It has overridden both his caution and mine.He wraps my shoulders with my red scarf. “Scared?”“Who, me? Of course not,” I say. Both of us know that’s a lie.He kisses me, long, hard, desperate, as if that’s our last moment together. “My mother used to say, ‘If your path demands that you go through hell, walk like you own it.’”“That’s what I’ll do.”Another kiss, and he sinks back into the shadows.

Months after recovering from coma, Ash discovers that the man who performed her brain surgery has a questionable medical experience and a dark past. Should she expose him, at the risk of becoming vulnerable to his revenge?
"About halfway through reading Overdose I got to thinking that it would make a great movie, a thriller to match anything that Alfred Hitchcock ever put on the screen (except maybe Vertigo). And then I thought 'If only Hitchcock were alive now. He would love this novel. It has all the ingredients he'd need.'" - Colm Herron, Author

I seem to be reading this series in reverse order. It is ok to do that. But, I first read about Lenny when he met and married Natasha. I fell in love with him then. In this read, though, he is not so lovable. He, too, is struggling. And poor Anita. This is another great read from Ms. Poznansky. Just know if you read any of this series, you'll be reading them all! Her writing style is unique and awesome.
I listened to this book on Audible. The narrator did an excellent job with Anita's improper, southern speech. She put all the emotion and feels in to it. Great job!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book from Story Origin.

5 out of 5 starsReviewed: 11-27-18Uvi Poznansky has a unique writing style and this story was perfect for her musical prose style, weaving this tender romance story as if she were leading the reader along in a dance, drawing us in, captivating, making us care about the lyrical characters of Lenny and Natasha and hope for them.
As we are taken back to the time of World War II and their love affair, you can't help but be fascinated with the time period, the spy mission, the danger and sacrifices.
The narrator dramatized and sang songs of the era, making the immersion complete into the story world of Lenny & Natasha, and their beautiful love in the time of war. The ending is poignant and perfect, but that's all I'll say so as not to spoil the experience.
Excellent story, very well told! Superb!

Let me tell you, she’s fierce, especially when going on the attack
The Governor of Florida has ordered all flags be flown at half-staff. The funeral is to take place early this afternoon, starting with a service at the Chapel by the Sea, located right across the street from the seashore. The streets leading to it are lined for blocks with uniformed officers, standing under dreary clouds shoulder to shoulder in their crisp dark green shirts and pants with black stripes, to honor the slain officer. This city of just over a hundred thousand residents has sunk into a mood of collective grief. Cold rain falls as thousands of people flock to the streets around the Chapel, waiting for the procession to arrive.About a dozen officers on horses and hundreds of others on light-flashing motorcycles lead the way ahead of the hearse. Behind it trotted a riderless black horse, draped in a white blanket. A legion of officers follow, a steady drumbeat guiding their steps. When the hearse comes to a stop, the officers stand at attention, their arms raised in salute. The coffin, wrapped in the American flag, is carried past Tracy and her son into the church.Flanked by Pa on one side and my mother on the other, I enter the Chapel and take a seat behind Tracy. Heather trails behind us, swaying her hips left and right in an impossibly tight dress. Her cleavage is generous enough to make the pastor blush. Ed’s portrait has been placed to the right of the altar. Throughout the service, Timmy weeps for his father. Toward the end, as the choir softly hums Amazing Grace, his cries tug at my heart.Afterwards, on the way out, I stop in front of Tracy. She is somber and utterly pale. Her eyes are red, but dry.“So sorry for your loss,” I say, a bit stiffly. After what she’s gone through, I’m afraid my words will fall short of giving comfort.“Thank you,” she says.“I’m leaving town,” I say. And Ma adds, “Both of us, we have flight tickets for tomorrow morning. Time to go back home.”“But,” I say to Tracy, “before I do, let me apologize—”“Apologize?” she echoes, raising her eyebrows. “For what?” Awkwardly, I say, “For not taking good care of Timmy. If I would have watched him more closely—”“You must be out of your mind,” she whispers, coming closer and drawing me into a hug. And to my father, who stands by my side, she says, “You must be so proud of your daughter.”“I am,” says Pa. And my mother adds, “To someone who doesn’t know Ashley, she may look frail, but let me tell you, she’s fierce, especially when going on the attack. Why, she taught that punk a lesson—”“Oh, Ma! Please stop,” I say.“I won’t say another word.” Bowing slightly over her sensible shoes, my mother adds, “So sorry for your loss.”Tracy turns back to me, grinning through fatigue. “Ash,” she says, “now is not the time to talk, but tonight, after the cemetery, please come over. We’ll talk.”

This is the second book in the Ash series. I did not read the first book but did not have any difficulty getting into the storyline.
Ash is a strong and resilient protagonist who commands the stage in this well developed tale of violence in society. She has a violent history in her past when she was attacked and raped which she is trying to forget.
When Ash arrives in Florida she finds herself being stalked by an unruly and troubled teen. She is fighting her own demons but finds the strength and courage to help a family in need after their oldest son is kidnapped. The author has created a well crafted story with twists and turns that keep the reader guessing until the satisfying ending.
The violence depicted in this story is frighteningly real and hits close to home with the troubled youth in our society today. This was an enjoyable read!

Winter, fall, summer, and suddenly spring again
Edna grew sleepy. The scene went blank before her eyes. She could hear, faintly at first, the mechanical hum of the projector. It went on faster and faster, spinning its reels—but at this point she could not make up her mind whether she was dreaming or not. There she was, lost in the middle of a strange story; her life, rewinded. It felt like evening, noon, morning, and suddenly night again; winter, fall, summer, and suddenly spring again. Edna touched her body. It seemed more agile, more slender. A change was upon her; she could sense it despite her drowsiness. She turned over. By some strange twist, she fancied that she was suddenly flat chested. Curiously, the sleepier she became—the more her body awakened. It ached with desire. She must have boxed up this feeling and now, it could no longer be denied. To her surprise, there was a certain tenderness in her nipples, such as she had not felt in a very long time—ever since her early teenage years, come to think of it. Edna could hear the sound, the maddening sound of celluloid sliding across and over itself; like air sucked in, whistling between the teeth. It made her head reel. Scenes raced through her mind in quick succession. This was no longer a game: She was helpless to stop this mad rush, a rush towards something unknown, towards the beginning. People came in and out of her life: Men, women, children, all of whom she had long forgotten. They were not the least bit embarrassed about walking in reverse, like circus acrobats on a tightrope. For the most part they managed to do it without bumping against each other or taking a fall. Like prunes in water, old men lost their wrinkles and gained back their plump skin. They spat out their medicines, and were instantly healed. They promised her love—love for eternity—but soon after, started to backpedal. Middle-aged women became young again, detaching themselves, in the process, from one boyfriend after another until even the first one backed away. Then they found themselves turning into wide-eyed virgins. Children became smaller. They forgot all their words, cried longer, the pitch of their voice rose higher and higher until finally slapped by a nurse; at which time—guided by an umbilical cord—they disappeared into a void, into their mother’s womb. The prospect of finding the end of life at the beginning seemed contradictory at first; but then, she figured, it was so much better than finding it at the proper end. It would be scary, either way—but when time draws near, you need all the help you can get. At least, as a baby you are cute, irresistibly so; which makes people want to take care of you. Not so when you are old. Edna slipped to the floor and cuddled herself. The machine kept on humming above her—but at this point she had no idea how to stop the thing. She turned her attention to that other sound, which echoed around the room: The beat, the wild beat of her heart. A heartbeat, reversed.
