In the spirit of spring: like the mountain air on a spring day

Revell wanted to know that I wouldn’t leave him and that I loved him. I did love him. I loved him like the mountain air on a spring day full of hope and new life. I loved him more than anything or anyone I’d ever loved. I loved him more than that spring breeze, but it was because I cherished that love that I had to protect him. I had to shield him from my mother’s revelations and Preston’s meanness and my own darkness. I couldn’t ask him to wait for me if I went down that murky road again. I loved him too much to be saddled with my misery.
I couldn’t give him what he wanted but I could give him what he needed right now; my love, in the only way I could express it.

The VERSATILE BLOGGER Award

It feels so rewarding! My blog, which is centered around themes of creativity in art and writing, has been in existence for only two years, with traffic sky-rocketting to over 47K visits last month (check out the chart below.) And now it has been tapped by fellow author Tamara Ferguson, who is not only my dear friend but also a top-ten best-selling, multi-award winning author with the coolest website ever, Tales of the Dragonfly. I'm thrilled that she nominated me for Versatile Blogger Award

Thank you so much, Tamara. It's a great honor, especially coming from you!8a10d-versatile-blogger-award1Seven things about me:In high-school I wrote a research project about the Israeli poet Uri Zvi Grinberg, who was politically out-of-fashion at the time. As a result, I received a failing grade for this project. The failing grade could have been corrected by taking an exam, which I refused to do, on principle. This meant never finishing my matriculation requirements for completing high-school requirements.I earned my B.A. in Architecture and Town Planning from the Technion in Haifa, Israel,  my M.A. in Architecture from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy NY, and my M.S. degree in Computer Science from the University of Michigan.Since I never learned the proper technique for breast-stroke, I taught myself to swim using my own 'technique', swimming underwater for three strokes and coming up for a breath on the fourth. Looks a bit unconventional (which means, funny) but is gets me up and down the pool with the rest of the swimmers...I do things the Indie way, designing my own book covers (using my own art) formatting the text for print, and converting it to ebook format, all single-handedly.My career spanned several professions—first as an architect, and later as a software engineer, software team leader, software manager and a software consultant, with an emphasis on user interface for medical instruments devices. The longest stretch of work was my eight years for Philips Ultrasound, developing a high-end ultrasound machine that never made it to market, because the company went out of business. This experience gave me the fine detail for the scene in my novel, Apart From Love, where Anita's womb is being scanned.I travelled to China, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, Britain, France, Italy, Germany, Mexico, Argentina, and Brazil.I published two series, The David Chronicles about the life of David and Still Life with Memories about the life of a family over two generations.  Nominating 15 blogs and bloggersTo the nominees I’ve listed: I awarded you because I believe you have an excellent blog and my readers and followers will find some great posts at your site. In the spirit of spring: as warm and intoxicating as fruity sangria

His tone was as warm and intoxicating as fruity sangria and Anna found herself wanting to sip at it.He came close, took her hands in his and said, "I've missed you."A warning bell jangled in her head. She blinked. Don't allow yourself to be sucked into this... this... atmosphere of seduction.Seduction? That was much too strong a word to use to describe what happened whenever she and this man came face-to-face....But as she looked into Derrick's dark, golden-flecked gaze, she was left wondering."How have you been?"His question was spoken with a soft concern that implied nothing less than a deep, personal intimacy—an intimacy that threatened to take away each and every doubt and fear Anna had about getting close to this man.Think, Anna! she told herself sternly. Keep your head together. You have reasons for keeping your distance from this man. Important reasons, of which pain, rejection, and humiliation are only a few. These sobering thoughts caused her to leave his personal question unanswered.

First day for a character: At Odds with Destiny, 4th novel

Inspired by the first day of spring, which is just around the corner, I want to give you a taste of a first moment for one of the characters in our boxed set:

I’ve seen love at first sight happen.  When I say that, I mean two people seeing each other for the first time and the moment their eyes meet there’s an instant connection.  It’s almost like electricity, everybody in the room can feel it.  I’ve been there when it happened, and there’s no doubt at all that’s what it was.  Say what you want about it being silly or sappy or just plain BS, I don’t care.  I know it’s real. That’s what it feels like when I’m halfway over to him, and he turns his head, sees me, and we make eye contact.  Everything else disappears.  There’s me and him and nothing else in the world.  We’re connected.  I don’t know why, I don’t know how, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s happening. And now I’m there and he’s staring at me like he can’t believe I’m real.  It’s OK, I feel the same way.  I reach out, put my hand on his arm and I really expect to feel sparks or something, but I don’t.  It’s just him, just the fabric of his shirt.  I slide my hand down his arm and I can feel the goosebumps as I go.  I’ve got them too.  I take his hand, and now I’m pulling him away from the table and everything else is starting to come back.  It’s louder than it seemed a few minutes ago, and it feels much too crowded all of a sudden, and what I need right this second is quiet and just him. “We have to talk,” I whisper in his ear, and he doesn’t say anything but he does follow me.  There’s a back door, it looks like there’s a patio for when the weather’s nice.  I head for it, and I need it to be open and it is and out we go.

First day for a character: At Odds with Destiny, 1st novel

Inspired by the first day of spring, which is just around the corner, I want to give you a taste of a first day for one of the characters in our boxed set:

Fear is contagious. I suppose he got it from his master, who has come to dread my military expeditions. He must have caught wind of the rumors, the persistent rumors that in the wake of such attacks I would leave no survivors. “C’mon! Don’t stop there!” I prod the slave, while ordering my men to give him a little something to eat, to revive his spirit. His teeth start to clank. “My master… He, he abandoned me when I became ill three days ago.”I demand, “Why, did you slow him down? What was the rush? Was he racing somewhere, on some important mission?”Three questions prove to be too much for him. He scratches his head. “We raided the Negev of the Kerethites, a territory belonging to Judah and the Negev of Caleb. And,” he says, “we burned Ziklag.”‘We’? Whom does he call ‘we’? A bright guy he is not, because man, why include yourself in the group that set my city aflame, and grabbed what belongs to me? A lesser man than me would cast this simpleton away to be tortured, or else to be ridiculed by my troops. But first things first. I ask him, “Can you lead me down to the raiding party?”Bright or not, this slave has the balls to tell me, “Swear to me before God that you’ll not kill me or hand me over to my master, and I’ll take you down to them.”I could have told him that he is in no position to bargain with me, but there is no time for idle talk. So I promise to let him live. In turn, he points the way to the Amalekite raiders. We charge ahead, and find them holding a feast and celebrating, which is the perfect time for us to fall upon them. No wonder we win, and recover all that they have taken. Being such a courageous hero, savior, and husband, I expect a show of gratitude from my dear wives, or at least a shower of kisses—only to realize my mistake. My wife, Ahinoam of Jezreel, greets me with, “What took you so long?”And Abigail utters her little sigh, as if to concur. “Late for dinner, as usual. I thought you’d never come!”And I say, “Don’t bother. I just lost my appetite.”This, believe me, is quite an unusual thing for me. Normally, such a decisive victory makes me absolutely ravenous, ready to feast on food and women. Perhaps the odor, that unmistaken Amalekite body odor messes me up. To my dismay I can sniff it on Abigail’s skin. I make a note to myself—for the sake of history—to announce in public that none of my wives has been touched, that they are as pure as the day I left them, which for Abigail is not saying much. Purity was far from her mind on that first day she met me, and I suspect it is far from her mind even now.

Book Description
In this unique collection, Uvi Poznansky brings together diverse tales, laden with shades of mystery. Here, you will come into a dark, strange world, a hyper-reality where nearly everything is firmly rooted in the familiar—except for some quirky detail that twists the yarn, and takes it for a spin in an unexpected direction.
This is the reality you will see through the eyes of a ghost of a woman, trying to reclaim her name by appealing to the devil; the eyes of a clay figure of a woman, about to be fired in the kiln, longing for her Creator; the eyes of a woman in the midst of a free fall, about to become a ghost; and the eyes of a feline creature with cracked fangs, trying in vain to resign herself, by hook and by crook, to being locked. These characters explore their identity and challenge their fate.
Inspired by art, these tales come from different times and places. Yet all of them share one thing in common: an unusual mind, one that is twisted. So prepare yourself: keep the lights on.

First day for a character: At Odds with Destiny, 2nd novel

Inspired by the first day of spring, which is just around the corner, I want to give you a taste of a 'first time in years'  moment for one of the characters in our boxed set:

As I walked back into the bedroom, I stopped at the mantle, kissed my fingertips, and touched them to the silver frame that held Elsbeth’s photograph. She stared at me with her beautiful, dark brooding eyes. For the first time in four years, I felt a twinge of guilt. I’d been undeniably attracted to Maddy’s daughter, in spite of the promise I’d made to myself to remain faithful to Elsbeth’s memory. I’d vowed I’d never love another woman. Ever. How could I? How could anyone replace a lifetime soul mate? Elsbeth and I had known each other since I was five and she and Sig were four. We'd been close friends in our youth, and had married when she’d turned eighteen. It had seemed out of the question that any other woman could fill my life the way she had.
And yet…there had been a certain pull when I met Camille today. An undeniable pull.

In the spirit of spring: Sailing on April first

“Well, Mr. Malone needs an upstanding woman for a wife. Apparently, not a lot of single women of that ilk can be found in San Francisco, so he wrote to me. Do you think you’d be interested in Mr. Malone? I can wire him today.” Margaret leaned forward.  “If he’s who you choose, he has already sent money to cover the passage for the woman and any children she may have. You would be leaving on the ship sailing on April first.”Nellie thought about the idea and decided she needed more time. “In all honesty, I hadn’t expected to be matched today. I’d like to sleep on the matter. I’m almost sure my response will be yes, but I need to make sure.” She scooted forward in her chair. “I’ll return and give you my answer tomorrow.”“Certainly. I understand perfectly.”Nellie stood and extended her hand. “Thank you. Until tomorrow.”Margaret took her hand with a firm grip. “Until tomorrow.”
