The #resistance will be the end of us

With a historic myopia that will rival the right, the kind of people who are just against trump because he acts mean and tweets like an angry tween (or the old guy he is, I guess). Still, I find it kinda disconcerting that now we have the anniversary of China's massacre and Poland's opening up (1989) as well and that's what they'll focus on, right? I mean, of course it's something to look into, but the same kind of people will never look into anniversaries of the continued Genocidal Indian Wars in Guatemala. Good times, I'm sure. With this kind of myopia we'll certainly fare well in 2020. JTFC.

Hot Take: I'm Happy When Trump Trashes the Media

Not that I care for Fox News or any of the right wing rage for the machine while acting like you're raging against it news outlets. No, I'm just saying that the MSM (yes a corporate controlled section that's more than useless) is worthless, it's just that when they cry foul about Trump talking crap to them ("people of the enemy" etc) they really are just falling for palace intrigue and also they really like Trump (look at what he does for their ratings) and they just want him to show them a little respect and they would, in a heart beat, bend the knee.
Is this a little harsh? No. Because all other aspects of power pushing on journalists (Assange etc) you have the media essentially not caring. Look at the silence from the media on Obama pushing on the journalist sources during his tenure (and now Trump taking that x100 of course). Look at the likes of Hersh and how he was pushed out of the US media. The list goes higher and higher and only hurts because the media is essentially entertainment with a newsy bent.
Is it all as bad as Fox news? No. But it's pretty fucking bad.
So I care not for them, because all this is of their making (and they still have power). Let's see if they ever change their tune. [1]
[1] Note that the left media is really the only side that comes out with some modicum of respect.

Just read a good book

Well, that's what I think. Thing is, I also think that I'm going to have to let this story sit for some time. It was, if anything, brave. Then, with the filter of time I'll be able to tell you more. I do, however, want to hear what your views on this are. What exactly you think of the book (get it from your library, whatever)?

Saw this. All the best Aleppo

Just saw this picture of Aleppo, Syria.  Reminded me of Wislawa Szymborska's quote:
"We've inherited hope—the gift of forgetting. You'll see how we how we give birth among the ruins."

Anything better than Gmail out there?

That I'm using blogger, a Google product, isn't lost on me. But the issues with gmail have become too much. I have pressed send on a few emails, then I find them in my drafts folder, not sent. Just missed  a deadline because of this. And telling the other person "I swear I pressed send" makes me seem like a crazy person or stupid beyond belief. Sure I could say they're doing this on purpose, but I would rather see it as a buggy problem (been happening and slow loading for a year now) that I need to fix now.
Any one have recs for good email clients? hell, at this point I would pay for one.

Memorial Day

Just saying thoughts going out on this one. Writing an article and things hit me hard. Manny.  So much to say. In that I don't think that this post will deal with that. The article may. There's the death of a friend and the senselessness of the fight and the reason for going to war and the way people end up buying silence from others (take, for example, Trumpistas holding up dead soldiers, like my friend, a fellow immigrant at that, to silence people who would dare kneel).

To that end, the article is hard to right because a kind of oscillation occurs. Between the human lost, and actually just remembering... versus the politics (because everything is politics, including being quiet) of dead soldiers and how that is used and also how just remembering is not really enough, now is it?

Of course, I'm thinking on Manny and his views of the war. He was, if anything, kind and emphatic. When many of us took turns to sneer or scoff at the poverty of the Iraqis he knew better (I should have known better) and mentioned Manila (he was an immigrant, like I said), how this is the fate of many. He also maintained his professionalism while also his humanity. Some random unit just tore through a house with their vehicle and left without a word? Well let's talk to them and give whatever we can to help.

That's the man.

And I'm not saying I'll forget the politics or be silent—a weakness of mine, i can't deny—but I will work towards making the world a better place.

On Life Expectancy and Our TED Talk Sickness.

So I was reading this article on Japan about how they live such long lives and well-lived ones too. Then I started thinking about how silly our system in general is and, yeah, I respect the hustle, but come on, people, let's not get carried away. We all want to tweak our lives that little bit and have great results (rich ones, I assume) and I'm not even saying the article isn't valid.

Don't join a union, like they say, better pop a pill. Thing is, the reason places like Japan and Germany (another country whose rituals people try to mimic or tell us will change our lives) is that they have sensible policies and damn better equality. This makes things like living longer that much easier (no matter what you do).
And to that level, Anand's Winner Takes All book, is instructive. Women, for example, shouldn't work for maternal leave (and paternal leave) or other real forms of equality (ERA for example). No, just lean in, and stand up up straight for fuck's sake and you'll undo centuries of oppression.
Anyhow, that's just me bitching. As the rich (GOP, but democrats as well) put to play the axiom "I'll pay one half of the poor to fight the other half" with their policies, the ones who have some power will try a handful of rituals to improve their status and we'll watch the world burn together.
/old man rant over. Actually, no old man rant here. Given how the older generation is acting, those diaper wearing fucks don't have a single thing of value to impart to this world. As they say, let's hope for more heat waves.

That Older Generation

Even within my family (and some weren't born in the states) the baby boomer generation is a shit show of irrational thinking. I'm really aghast at how to deal with them. How do we move civilization forward when so many are just selfish idiots? Is it because they broke the back of all poor movements (some actually communist, most just labeled that) that they think being evil will get them to the promised land? I think us younguns won't win, but we should make damn sure to dance on their graves and let other generations know they wanted to watch the world burn for their own comfort.

Your thoughts?

Seattle is not Progressive & thoughts on Crime.

Now, some people think of Seattle as some sort of liberal bastion. And certainly it has its liberal aspects, but there's still much racism and repressiveness in terms of facing off the issues that plague the city. Read this back and forth on reddit to see that there's probably no hope...

Just dealing with mass incarceration (on levels of Stalin's time and reading Gulag has me thinking, oh they didn't have completely mad reasons for arresting people... we've done worse[1]) brings up the stupid. Now with this I'm not completely against the hard right (and center left... never forget Clinton) because there is some ambiguity to why crime went down during the 90s. To hear people in NYC talk, it was all Giuliani, and yet crime went down all over the country.
Freakonomics made the claim it was abortion (though I sense it has been refuted now). While others have made the claim it was youth population (combined with less opportunities). Nowadays, however, it seems that the car is to blame and lead is the culprit of the rise in crimes. Crazy to think that it was a chemical to stop engines from pinging that did us in.

Anyhow, what I'm saying is that there isn't a consensus (or the lead one isn't widely known just yet) and so people revert very quickly to tribal markers instead of thought (I suppose they do it for Climate Change too).
Sad, because people will continue to suffer.

[1] Note, I'm talking about the reasons for arresting people, not the camps and mines. SO take a look at Just Mercy and what it says about On the USSR  count we're talking pretty heinous crimes against humanity. Read Kolyma Tales for some clear thinking on that. Nevertheless, one still needs to read The New Jim Crow to gain a better understanding of the racial intent of fighting crime and using criminals as slaves.
