View From the Pond October/November/December

Happy New Year! Hope 2024 is starting off well for everyone. One of my goals is to get organized with my View From the Pond posts- and I am doing it! I am able to wrap up the last three months of 2023 and I'll be able to get on track with 2024 now that I am all caught up.

This past week it has been freezing here, so it was nice to look back on some better weather. We didn't get any snow through December- so those photos will come when I share January views. Looking back it is easy for me to see why I had a hard time narrowing down photos for the post. The vibrant colors in October made the pond a true delight. Every minute the lighting changed, and I kept snapping away!

Sit back and enjoy looking back on the Fall views. I certainly felt very lucky to have such stunning views right out my front door.

October

November
November I was away on a short trip and adjusting to having a sprained wrist. Still, I was able to get some pictures, and even when I didn't get to take as many as I wanted- I was able to sit and enjoy the calming view.

DecemberDecember was a rainy month. We got 15 inches of rain in one month! It made the pond and the brook very full!  The brook was doing a lot more than babbling that is for sure. The rain made it hard to snap as many photos as I would have liked, but it was amazing to watch. Plus, I find the sound of water running very relaxing and soothing, so I tried to soak it all in.

(You can hear the brook and the rain in this short video.)

And that's a wrap on 2023! Stay tuned for views from the new year. Thanks for stopping by and visiting!

New Scene. New Sights to See.

Recently, the universe decided I needed change, and it made it so. Transition can be challenging, and I've done enough adulting to last a lifetime, but once dust settles, vision clears. My daily scene is different now, though some things are the same. Stephanie has her majestic pond, and I have a street to explore. It's filled with eclectic sights, and runs parallel to the Housatonic river. Change is swift when it comes; with open hearts and eyes we find the light playing in and all around us. Here's a peek into my new world...

Rainbow Ride finally realized in a proper circle.

Her Highness chilling in the mood lighting. I popped a moon flower seed in this pot. I hope it blooms!
Caught this rainbow playing with my house faerie. Found this magical crystal ball amethyst treasure at The Ruby Tree in Woodbury, CT (a good reason to shop at local eclectic shops, that's where you find these stunning, unique artworks. This one was waiting for me.)
Sharky is still suspicious.  Morning walk. In December, we visited Barnes and Noble in Waterbury. As always, we had a great time talking to readers and spending time with the awesome staff there.  Wishing all of our readers peace, love, and abundance in the new year!  FEAR NOT THE UNEXPECTED

MMGM Spotlight: The Deliverers by Gregory Slomba

This week we're spotlighting an excellent middle grade series, The Deliverers.

We connected with the author of the books, Gregory Slomba, some time ago, and we've been on the book block with him pretty much since the beginning of our own journey into the depths of the Begonia House.

The Deliverers books have new illustrations that whisk you right off into the adventure, and the fourth book is in the works!

Book 1: Sharky and the Jewel

Eric has never talked to birds before, nor has he heard of a land called Calendria.  All of that changes when an ordinary campout changes his life forever. After an owl named Stig asks him to go on an adventure with him, Eric is intrigued and agrees to go. They travel through a door to the Hallway of Worlds and the Gatekeeper gives them their assignment.  From there Stig and Eric enter a new world and meet a member of Calendria, Kate. She is convinced that they are “The Deliverers” from an old legend and that they have been sent to help her people get away from Sharky, a pirate that has been making life difficult for her village...

Book 2: Order of the Crystal Lion

Eric and the rest of the Deliverers are back together on a new adventure. This time the Hallway of Worlds has sent Eric, Kate, Hallo, and Stig to a place where the people and beings are involved in a civil war with each other. A group of people called the Vynistri have been using a device, the Machine, to alter the DNA of the Chazum. The Vynistri is being ruled by the evil Chancellor Trelango. His brother, Selango, who claims to be the Crystal Lion spoken about in legends, is rallying the Chazum and their supporters. Two brothers fighting on opposite sides! It's up to the Deliverers to make sure that the Machine is destroyed and that peace is restored in the land...

Book 3: The Golden Dragon of Ang

Eric, Stig, Kate, and Hallo are on another adventure to save a world under distress. The black mist from Eric’s recent nightmares seems to be connected to this new world, the Dragon Islands. Unfortunately, Eric isn’t sure what the mist is all about. Here the people rely on the Voice of the Dragon, a speaker who relays wisdom from Golden Dragon of Ang. Whenever a speaker dies, the next one is already announced and it must be a child between the ages of 12 and 15. But, not this time! The Voice is gone and no one is in line to take over. The governors from each of the five Dragon Islands are trying to figure out where the next Voice of the Dragon will be from, and they all want it to be the island they rule. With this unrest comes conniving and scheming in order to benefit different islands and bring them power...

Find out more about the author, Gregory Slomba!
Where did you get the idea for the The Deliverers 2: Order of the Crystal Lion?
When I set out to write the sequel to Sharky and the Jewel I wanted to make it different than the first, so I made the setting a slightly futuristic sci-fi one. I actually wanted to make it more sci-fi than it wound up being, but as I wrote I kind of shifted back and forth between the future and the past. I don’t know if that was effective when all was said and done, but I think it made for a unique world.

Views From the Pond July/August/September

Well, my plan of posting one Views From the Pond post a month is not working out as planned. I take millions of pictures, but posting has been tricky. The last few months have been busy with family weddings, work trips, work, helping a friend move, and then I sprained my wrist when I fell at work. I am fine and the wrist is finally almost back to normal, but it is amazing how much life is altered when you can't type with two hands!

So, this post will contain pictures for three months and then I will post three months in the beginning of January and I will hopefully be on track! Since it is three months worth of photos and activities- there is a lot to take in! I hope to be on a better schedule in 2024. Time will tell!

July

The brook had lots of grass growing in it.

A family of deer which came daily for a while.

August

(Our new weather station all set up)

                                                 (down the street)

                                       A visiting heron.

A short video of the heron (which I watched for a long, long time)

September

(New grass growing in where we finally                                                   finished a project we started in May! We made                                                  the space to walk to the pond wider- and it was                                                  a lot of work, but well worth it!)

Thanks for coming by for a visit! I have so much fun watching the daily changes! Always amazing to me.
Next Views From the Pond will be up at the beginning of January for October/November/December! FEAR NOT THE UNEXPECTED

MMGM: Bubba and Squirt: City of Bones by Sherry Ellis

Bubba and Squirt are siblings who have had some exciting adventures together. They may not always get along, or see eye to eye on a situation, but they are very loyal to each other and will do whatever they can to help the other one out. It’s been a awhile since their last adventure, but after a dream in which their great-great-grandfather comes to Bubba things move fast. Especially since the vision may send them on a path to find their missing father. They use their magic shovel and it sends them to the catacombs of Paris. While they are trying to figure out where they are, they meet new friends who tell them where they are and explain about all the bones. Although their main goal is to find their missing father, they witness something shady involving some artwork and they can't let the thieves get away with it. They four friends decide to follow the thieves to see if they steal any more art or lead them to any clues. Since Bubba's vision involved a door and artwork, they figure they are working on two cases at once.  When another burglary happens right in front of them- they are right in the mix of  everything. Danger is everywhere. What should Bubba and Squirt do? Is following the thieves worth it? How will they ever find the door Bubba saw in his dream? Will they ever find their father? You will have to read this fast paced adventure to find out!

Bubba and Squirt: City of Bones by Sherry Ellis is the third installment in the Bubba and Squirt series and it was especially fun! It certainly helps to have read the other books first, but this could also work as a standalone. I loved learning a little bit about some interesting Paris landmarks and getting to learn more about some of the big museums in the area. The back of the book includes a glossary and extra information about some of the places and things mentioned in the book, which is a great way to learn more!  I’ve been curious about the catacombs since I first heard about them and it was interesting to have them as a setting in this story. The action really gears up and I couldn’t believe all of the things that happened. I like that the siblings met some nice friends and they all worked together to try to solve the mysteries. The story is told in the present tense (unlike the previous books in the series) and everything isn't resolved in the end, so readers will need to grab the next book in the series to find out where Bubba and Squirt are headed next.  I recommend this book for kids in third grade and up who like adventure, mystery, and a little bit of scary in their books. Also- because this book is less than 100 pages  it will appeal to readers who are intimidated by a thick book or for those who are looking for a shorter read. I look forward to the next Bubba and Squirt adventure!
Has anyone else read any of the Bubba and Squirt adventures? Or have you read another book by Sherry Ellis? We'd love to hear your thoughts!
Happy Reading!~L

Ferry Blackwell Strikes Again!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN! Here's a story that's sure to make you scream.

Beware! This tale is written to scare. It is not for youngsters, their fingers and toes are too small for Ferry's taste.
FERRY BLACKWELL STRIKES AGAIN
“No way!” Georgie exclaimed. “Mom told you to stop making up stories.”

“It's true. I saw Ferry Blackwell,” Macy said. “He had a head like a melon.”

“You did not. Get your stuff and let’s go. We’re gonna be late.” Georgie walked out the door, and Macy followed, wishing her big brother would believe her this time. She did like to make up stories and their mom had asked her to knock it off, but this wasn’t a story. She had spotted Ferry Blackwell, she was sure of it.

 ***

Shifting from one foot to the other, Macy stared down the school driveway. All the buses had left; everyone was gone. Georgie was late. She had tried to call him on her cell phone, but there was no answer. Her mom was at work, but Macy knew interrupting her would guarantee a whole evening of arguing. Slipping the phone into her back pocket, she decided to walk home.

As the pavement twisted and turned she found herself thinking about Ferry Blackwell again. Last week she had started reading a book about the history of her town, Devilsville. It hadn’t been very interesting, except for one phrase, which was handwritten on page thirty-three. It said: In the woods of Devilsville, you’re sure to find a gory thrill. When the bakerman wants to eat, hide your hands and cover your feet. With a head melon-sized and fire burning in his eyes, he’ll harvest your fingers and your toes, then hide the rest so no one knows. Murdered by an angry town, he swore revenge when they shot him down. So watch your children, but never tell- if Ferry Blackwell comes back from hell.

Macy knew the words by heart. She had looked through a few other books, but found nothing else about Ferry Blackwell. Then, the other day, she saw him. There had been an odd rustling behind the bushes in her backyard, and when she went over to investigate, someone was there. It looked like a man, but with a huge head. He had flashed a mad, toothy grin at her, and then disappeared. Her mother had come running out when she heard Macy’s rants of terror.

“Macy! What did I tell you about scaring people with your stories?” her mother had yelled. Macy knew that no one was ever going to believe her, and why should they? After all, she did have a long history of making things up, which had opened more than one can of worms for her parents to deal with. Things like, Ginny Wader, in the third grade, refusing to touch door handles ever again or Georgie wearing a helmet wherever he went for a year. The list was long, she mused. Her thoughts were suddenly cut short. Just ahead, at the bottom of the hill, a school bus was stopped in the middle of the road. Macy cautiously walked up to it and climbed the steps. Other than the backpacks strewn about on the seats it appeared empty.

“Hello?” she asked quietly. “Is anyone here?” Macy slowly made her way down the aisle. Midway, something caught her eye and when she turned to get a closer look, her mouth dropped open in horror. On the seat to her left was a bloody pile of shoes and socks, and what looked like fingernails tossed into the gruesome heap.

BANG! Something hit the side of the bus. “What was that?” she whispered. BANG! Again, the bus shook and teetered. Macy reacted fast. She ran up the aisle and grabbed the door handle. Just as it was about to latch, long fingers pried it back open. Two red, veined eyes zeroed in on their target. Terror forced the air out of her lungs, and she screamed.

***

Macy was flat on her back when she woke. She was chained to the floor, and her feet were bare. A painful stinging in her fingers and toes sliced through her body. Where was she? What had happened?

“Who else is here?” she questioned the darkness.

“Shhhh,” a panicked voice ordered.

“Who’s there?” she said again.

“Stop talking, you idiot. He’ll hear you.” It was a terrified sounding boy.

“Why’s it so dark?” Macy continued. She had no intention of shutting up.

“I think we’re in a basement,” another voice chimed in.

Suddenly it dawned on her where they must be. It had to be the abandoned house on Hull Street. She and Georgie would come here when things around the house got too serious. It was their hiding spot, and she knew it well. Even the moldy, abandoned smells were familiar. “How many people are here?” she asked.

“I’m here, Marcus Beltane,” came a nervous voice.

“Me too, I’m Jen Andrews.”      The voices started to pick up, “Justin Deluca, Melanie Grism...” There seemed to be about ten kids sitting in the dark with her; all scared, and all, she was certain, without their fingernails and toenails.      The creaking of a door silenced the murmuring. A light flickered on, cutting through the blackness. Macy squinted her eyes open a bit and stared up at the ceiling, watching as a shadow with an enormous melon shaped head moved across the room. Its heavy footfalls came to a halt. Suddenly, a cackling voice bellowed out, “Looky here, girls and boys, forget your mommies and your toys. The fun and games will soon begin; to scare me back is how you win. But should you lose, you’ll pay a price, your fingers and toes I’ll surly dice. Just try to leave! It won’t do you well. For I’m back from hell. I’m the Bakerman, Ferry Blackwell.” His howling laugh sounded insane, like a hyena calling out to its prey. He did an odd little jig. Then, in an instant, he was gone.

“Okay, this is really happening,” Macy said, more to herself than anyone else. She took a deep breath, then continued, “He said something about winning, didn’t he?"

“Yeah, he said, to scare me back is how you win,” a trembling voice squeaked. “He also said that he was a bakerman. What’s he going to do? Cook us into bread or something?”

“I think that’s exactly what he’s going to do,” Macy responded, remembering what she had read. “But, it sounds like if we scare him back, we win. Which, I guess, means we get to live.”

“How are we supposed to scare him? He’s a demon who makes bread out of kids’ fingers and toes. I mean, what’s scarier than that?” Macy recognized the voice of Jen Andrews.

“I know, but...” Her mind was whirring. Then, it hit her. She remembered the cell phone in her pocket. The door opened. Macy threw caution to the wind and whispered just audibly, “I have a plan.”

***

Her heart thudded in her chest as a shadow moved into the room. “So kiddies, who’s it going to be? Who wants to be the first to try to scare me?” His voice sounded crazy.

Macy mustered up all of her strength and called out, “I’ll go first, you don’t scare me. You’re going to be caught any minute.” She kept her breathing even as Ferry Blackwell loomed above her, searching her face with his terrifying eyes. He was so close that she could smell his putrid, stinking breath.

“You wait and see! I’ll show you just how scary I can be!” He pulled her up by her hair and dragged her to a chopping block in the center of the room. Grabbing her left arm, he slapped her hand down on it.

She focused her mind on the weight in her back pocket, hoping beyond hope she hadn’t been knocked out for more than thirty minutes. The reminder alarm on her phone had been set to go off at exactly 4PM, and it had to be about that time. Macy glared up at Ferry Blackwell and said, “Everyone in town already knows where we are. Kids today have GPS trackers implanted in our bodies that tells our parents exactly where we are at all times. You’ll see, the town’s people will be here any moment to shoot you down and send you back to hell, Ferry Blackwell.”

He looked bemused, as he replied, “Clever girl! You know my name! Now, let’s begin our little game. Terribly funny to think you’ll be saved- when for a century, fingers and toes I’ve craved!” He raised a sharp blade above his head, poised to strike. Macy squeezed her eyes shut and braced herself. Please go off alarm, she prayed, believing that this would, at the very least, buy her more time. As if on cue, a loud beeping blared out from her pocket. Ferry leered at her, unsure. Just then, in a brilliant moment of pure luck, another cell phone rang out, perhaps a concerned parent. Another one went off with a mechanical jingle. The timing couldn’t have been better. Suddenly, there was a frantic banging on a door. The demon spun around wildly, looking terrified. “No, no, not to hell. Hide, I must and never tell,” he bellowed and dropped the blade. It landed with a clink just as Ferry Blackwell shot into the air and burst into flames, disappearing in a black puff of smoke.

No one breathed. Somewhere above, Georgie’s worried voice called out, “Macy, are you in here?”

Ferry's Toe Finger Bread INTERVIEW WITH FERRY BLACKWELL

Hosted by  Cate Masters
Cate Masters: What do you love most about Halloween?

Ferry Blackwell: Halloween's a joke, that's what I say! It’s better in hell on that boring day. I can't even scare, so there's nothing to win- the people want horror and are likely to sin. I'd rather lay low and bide my time, when the moment's right, I'll get what's mine.

Cate Masters: Do you have a favorite memory of a Halloween past?

Ferry Blackwell: There was this one time, now let me see- I remember a Halloween treat that I baked just for me. I'd gathered my wits, then sought the ingredients, hoping to find a few fresh, young deviants. Mostly I needed fingers and toes, so I snatched them right up, despite all their woes. I sliced and diced, and baked my bread, even shared it graciously with those not yet dead.

Cate Masters: Have you ever had an unusual experience you can't explain?

Ferry Blackwell: I am an unusual experience you can't explain! You won't see me coming, and then you'll know pain. (Stands up, does a quick jig, then sits down again- grinning).

Cate Masters: What frightens you the most?

Ferry Blackwell: The time I told you about the treat, that Halloween was not so sweet. You see, though the bread did taste grand, the people found me, guns in hand. I was scared when they shot me down, but I swore I'd be back to haunt their town. Now here I am, as you can tell- Ferry Blackwell's back from hell! (Cackling laugh)

Cate Masters: Ever gone on a ghost tour? Or ghost hunting on your own?

Ferry Blackwell: Bah! Ghosts are for babies! They can't even speak. Nothing scary about them, they're flimsy and weak.

Cate Masters: Any favorite Halloween recipes you'd care to share?

Ferry Blackwell: Lookie here! I'll grant your wish- Toe Finger Bread's my signature dish! It's so scrumptious, you'll surly agree. Next time I bake it, I shall slice some for thee.

Story Magic at the Connecticut Renaissance Faire!

Stephanie Robinson casting story spells

Ah, the Connecticut Renaissance Faire. What could be finer than a day spent with colorful characters greeting you with a hearty, Huzzzah! Catching whiffs of fried dough and baked potatoes seasoning the air. Mingling with artisans at an eclectic market, and watching happy faire-goers finding secret treasures along their way. Who wouldn't want to stay for a spell?

We feel delighted to be a part of the magic, and we sprinkled in mystery from the classic author booth on Shady Lane. The Connecticut Renaissance Faire offers this cozy nook to local authors to help spread the love of reading. We appreciate their support for local authors.

It's always a pleasure talking to readers about The Secret Files of Fairday MorrowFairday Morrow and the Talking Library, and hinting at clues from the third book in progress, Fairday Morrow and the Master's Emporium. This Labor Day the faire brewed up plenty of good vibes, and we told our story to curious passersby who inquired about the mystery of the Begonia House.

Once invited in, let the story begin...

Jess Haight asking curious readers, "Are you in the mood for a mystery?"

"In book one, The Secret Files of Fairday Morrow, eleven-year old Fairday and her family move from Manhattan to a small town in Connecticut, where her parents have bought a big, spooky, crumbling Victorian Manor called the Begonia House. They want to turn it into a bed-and-breakfast, but after Fairday moves in strange occurrences start happening, and she finds out that an unsolved mystery had taken place in her home. Fairday and her friends, Lizzy and Marcus, in the Detective Mystery Squad, piece together clues to find out what happened in the house, and what they uncover is more shocking then they could have ever imagined.

The first mystery wraps up, and in book two, Fairday Morrow and the Talking Library, Fairday finds out that the Begonia House is hiding more secrets when she receives a worrisome note from a mysterious librarian warning that words in stories are vanishing, and that a bookworm is eating them. Fairday and the DMS are on the case to save the stories! They uncover a magical portal that transports them to the Talking Library, where books come alive and story magic abounds."

MMGM: American as Paneer Pie by Supriya Kelkar

Lekha Divekar is the only Indian American in her small town. She was born in America, but she thinks other people see her as an outsider. Lekha feels like she is two people; the girl who does her best to blend in and be invisible at school, and the girl at home who is happy eating Indian food and watching old Bollywood movies. Trying to balance it all is hard. But Lekha can't stand being called names because of her culture and having kids make fun of her because they say she smells funny. Her best friend and neighbor, Noah, is the only one who knows both sides of her. Neither of them feels strong enough to stand up to the kids who are being mean. When a new Desi girls moves in, Lekha thinks all her prayers have been answered. Now she will have a friend who understands all her struggles. But when she meets Avantika she realizes that the new girl has moved to the small town straight from India and doesn't feel the same way as Lekha. Now that there are two Desi girls in school will Lekha be able to blend in? Will there be a time when Lekha will use her voice? You'll have to read this enlightening book to find out!

American as Paneer Pie by Supriya Kelkar is up for the Intermediate Nutmeg Award and I can see why! The characters tugged at my heart, and I also loved learning about Indian culture. Middle school is hard, so I can imagine that a lot of kids try to blend in, but for Lekha it's an even bigger deal. I felt bad for her thinking about how hard it was for her to live two lives. She kept finding herself in tough spots where she was going to disappoint her family, her swim team, or herself. When she has a decision to make during Diwali, the most important holiday of the year for her family, my heart broke for her. The kids in her town don't celebrate Diwali and to them it is just another day. It made me think about important holidays in other cultures and religions. It must be hard if you celebrate a holiday and no one else in your town does, so people expect you to do regular every day things. I like how the book helped me learn about Indian foods and traditions. I would recommend this book to people in 4th grade and up who like realistic fiction and stories about standing up for ourselves and what we believe. I can't wait to read another book by this author.

Has anyone else read American as Paneer Pie? Or have you read another book by Supriya Kelkar? We'd love to hear your thoughts!
Happy Reading!

Color, Creation, and Inspiration

"Seven Royal Colors Play Rainbow Ride" Who but I peeps from the unhewn dolmen arch? (excerpt taken from a translation of the ancient poem, Amergin in The White Goddess by Robert Graves)
Hello, Readers! Sometimes stories are channeled through art. My mind tends to travel down random conceptual tangents that wind up linking different ideas together. Skipping around on the creative path, no matter where it leads, permits me to follow along and let creative spirit show the way.
As creation grows, so do stories. I like to listen to audio books while I work. Many of the books I listen to are about philosophy and quantum science, two topics I love to engage with. The books I digest influence my creative work, and I think it's interesting to see the elements that appear in a finished project.
There is a lot happening on the story front these days; the 3rd book in the Fairday Morrow series. The Master's Emporium, is in the works, along with a WIP that's been brewing up a storm lately. So, while the story cauldron is simmering, here are some of the art projects I've recently completed.
The more you look, the more you see; truth lies betwixt the lines. Nature's spirits are my muse, and when I explore the essence of natural patterns on a deeper level, I always find myself lost in a mad splash of matter. After all, that's where it's all happening!
