THE CHRISTMAS SHIFT by JM KLINE
A Shadow Hills Shifter Story
Book Blurb
*
It’s Christmas Eve, and Holly Barry’s seventeenth birthday. This is the year she will shape-shift for the first time, and she is terrified of what she may change into. The holidays are already a hard time for her, missing her mother’s Christmas cheer. Her embarrassing seasonal name doesn’t help matters. Her dad doesn’t seem to understand Holly’s reluctance, and decorates to his heart’s content.
When Holly shifts into something truly grotesque, she has to find the Christmas spirit. Will she discover it in time to make dreams come true?
(Short Story)

A Note from JM Kline about The Christmas Shift….
Thank you so much for having me on your blog! Today is the LAST DAY you can get The Christmas Shift for free on Kindle, so head over there right now and download it! It’s about a girl on the eve of her seventeenth birthday, which happens to fall on Christmas Eve. As anyone with a December birthday will admit, holiday birthdays tend to be pretty awful. Unfortunately for Holly Barry, it’s even WORSE for her, because she’s about to have her life changed forever. She’s about to shift into an animal, and she has no idea what she’s going to be! Here’s a small excerpt of The Christmas Shift….
THE CHRISTMAS SHIFT by JM KLINE
EXCERPT
I followed Dad through the front door. I hadn’t realized it would be so cold outside, and I sat on the heating vent in the living room to warm up. I stared at the over-stuffed brown armchair Dad loved and thought about what my life might be like after I turned seventeen tomorrow.
This was one birthday I’d be happy to skip.
Dad didn’t tell me that we were shape shifters until I started high school. Dad had changed into a bird so many times over the last two years, I’d kind of gotten used to the idea. I wish I’d had a chance to see my mom change. Dad always told me she was the most beautiful swan he had ever seen. It was part of why he’d fallen in love with her.
Really, it wasn’t the shape-changing that scared me. The truth is, I was terrified I’d change into something weird.
I’d been thinking about the worst case scenarios for a while. What if I changed into a shark or something and I suddenly couldn’t breathe? I know they have precautions, like having a nearby pool or something, but what if they didn’t get me there in time? I moved through other terrible possibilities. A cow – I can imagine the taunts now. A vulture – has to be the ugliest bird on the planet. A giant snake. I shuddered at that one. I know a couple of snakes. One of my teachers is a rattlesnake, but they still give me the creeps.

THE TOWN OF SHADOW HILLS HAS SECRETS….
Nestled in the foothills of the Colorado Rocky Mountains lays the town of Shadow Hills. Driving through, you would never suspect the town’s inhabitants are anything but normal.
SECRETS THAT CAN BE SCARY….
Tessa Brooks has lived all her life in Shadow Hills. She’s always thought she was just another ordinary girl. She is wrong.
When her parents reveal the town’s Big Secret the day before she’s supposed to start high school, she thinks it’s the worst thing that could ever happen to her…and that’s when things get even weirder.
SECRETS THAT CAN CHANGE LIVES FOREVER….
Tessa tries to balance high school, family, friends, a new maybe-sort-of-boyfriend with new powers and responsibilities she’s not ready to embrace. Her life as she knows it has ended, and a new one is beginning. Whether she’s ready or not.

A Note from JM Kline about Shifting Dreams….
As a birthday bash bonus, the first book in the Shadow Hills Shifters series is on sale! Get it for just $1.99 today, December 18th! The price goes up to $2.99 tomorrow, before returning to its original list price of $3.99.
Shifting Dreams is a story about Tessa Brooks, who just found out that she was born into a family of shape-shifters. They tell her she’ll shift into an animal on her seventeenth birthday, but she has no idea what she’ll turn into! Of course, as it happens, things don’t go quite as planned. Here is a short excerpt. Enjoy!
SHIFTING DREAMS by JM KLINE
A Shadow Hills Shifter Story
EXCERPT
Everyone left for school and work. Then I got myself ready and walked to the forest on the edge of town. Vin told us we shouldn’t be there, but I had this feeling I couldn’t shake.
I found the clearing, sat down, and waited. I closed my eyes to relax and hopefully get rid of my headache. I must have fallen asleep because when I opened my eyes, it was hot and the sun was shining directly over me.
Apparently, it was all a waste of time. I stood up and brushed the pine needles off my pants. I walked back to the path, watching the ground for giant roots. I knew those suckers were just waiting to trip the unsuspecting and the clumsy. I’d just jumped over one particularly mangy-looking shrub when I noticed there was someone standing on the path.
At first, all I saw were his shoes – big, black zombie-stomping boots. His long legs were covered in dark jeans, which covered a butt that was to-die-for. He wasn’t big and built, but his arms gave me the idea that he worked out in some way. His hair was blond and scruffy and long, just like I liked it.
I must have made some noise just then, because he turned around to see me. I caught the square jaw and yummy lips before I looked up and saw his eyes. They were ringed with emerald and the bright green starburst was flecked with gold.
I knew those eyes. This was my wolf.
I suddenly didn’t know what I was doing there. What if Vin was right and this guy hurt me for coming back into his territory?
I took a step back and he smiled. Ohmygosh. He’s going to kill me and he was going to enjoy it. What was I thinking?
“Hey, I remember you.” He took a step toward me.
Could he smell my fear? Oh, I hoped he couldn’t. I could only stand there and hope he had some other trait. Maybe he could talk to bugs or….oh, why did I have to come here today?

JM Kline was born in Colorado, and was raised to love books by her mom, a published author. While she grew up reading many different genres, anything with paranormal or fantasy elements caught her eye most often. She grew up writing fantastic stories about Rindercella and her Prince, talking monkeys, and fairy princesses.
The Shadow Hills Shifters series is a Young Adult Paranormal series about a small town in the Rocky Mountain foothills. Shadow Hills is a small town where a pop quiz could include multiple choice, essays, or a sudden battle with your best friend!
When she isn’t writing, JM spends her time with her husband, two beautiful daughters, and two rambunctious dogs.

**Author Peek** Interview with JM Kline
**AUTHOR PEEK** Interview with JM Kline
Editorial Note: I shouldn’t be surprised this rebellious author threw out my questions. She always did march to her own drum. (Shhh! Don’t tell her I’m liable to steal her interview questions! ) You’re in for a holiday treat, my lovely readers!
~~~
Happy Monday everyone! I was given a list of interview questions, but many of you have already read my answers for those, so I decided to be a rebel! I hope this helps wake you up this Monday morning!
What do you think about when you’re alone in your car?
“Oh, shoot. Did I leave my kids at home alone?” Yeah, that’s right. I’m *never* alone. Sometimes I wake up early so I have some guaranteed time alone. 6:00 in the morning doesn’t look too bad when it’s the only time you get to yourself during the day! I try to use this time for writing, but until I get my pot of coffee (hey, it’s only a 5-cup pot!) I’m not terribly useful.
If you had to listen to one song over and over again for a whole day, what would it be?
Well, I tend to be forced to listen to all the baby songs over and over again, so I don’t think anything can be quite as irritating as that gets. BUT I pretty much adore everything by Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers (fka The Refreshments) so I’d probably pick one of those.
If it’s a writing day, it’d be “King of the Hill” just because it has no words. I can’t imagine what that day of writing would look like, but I can tell you it’d be interesting. If it’s a non-writing day, either “Hello New Day” or “Banditos.”
Pick two celebrities to be your parents.
This is a tough one. I already have one celebrity (waves to Karen Docter) but I think I’ll choose two new ones. Because I can.
Now, I’m sure some people would choose hot celebrities, but I don’t want to be crushing on my parents. That’s kinda icky. I’ve always thought that Tommy Lee Jones would be a pretty cool dad. He’s sarcastic, and probably a bit of a pain in the butt, especially for a teen. But he’s still fun enough that it wouldn’t be too bad. For a mom, I’d have to choose Paula Deen. Because, well…butter. AmIRight??? Plus, I really want her to teach me how to do that awesome flippy hair.
Tell me about your ideal reader.
The one who likes my book! No, seriously though. I don’t think I have an “ideal” age, gender, whatever when I’m writing. I’m telling my characters’ stories, and I can only hope that most people can relate with some part of that. The first two books in my series have female main characters, but the third will follow the newest of their trio, a sweet young man. I’m sure that many people who read my series will be girls, young and young-at-heart, but I do hope that the story can appeal to everyone.
What’s your favorite meal of the day?
Breakfast! It’s amazing! I’ve had days when breakfast food is all I eat all day. My two-year-old doesn’t seem to mind, and everyone else only enjoys Breakfast-For-Dinner, so they don’t get bored. Eggs and sausage and toast and waffles and syrup and…okay, I think that’s all for now! I hear my waffle iron begging for me to use it. Thank you for reading!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FROZEN CARAMEL HOT CHOCOLATE [Serves 6-8]
8 oz. semisweet chocolate, coarsely chopped
½ cup sugar
½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 cups whole milk
½ cup caramel sauce, warmed
1 cup heavy cream
2 tsp. powdered sugar
4 cups ice cubes
In small saucepan, combine chocolate, sugar, and cocoa powder. Whisk in 1 cup milk and cook over medium heat, whisking constantly, until smooth, about 4 minutes. Remove from the heat, whisk in remaining 1 cup of milk and refrigerate for 1 hour. Pour warm caramel sauce into a squeeze bottle and drizzle about half in the mugs or goblets so that it sticks to the sides. In a medium bowl, beat the heavy cream with the powdered sugar until it forms soft peaks. Using a blender, process the ice and chilled chocolate mixture until smooth. Pour into the glasses. Top with whipped cream and the remaining caramel sauce. Serve with straws and spoons.

About the author, Jennifer Zane….
Jennifer Zane has lived all over the country–from Georgia to Maryland, New York to Colorado, including an exciting five years in Montana. Her time in Big Sky country was the basis for this book. When she’s not writing, she savors the insanity of raising two boys, is figuring out how many meals she can make with a pressure cooker, and teaches a pretty mean karate class. She currently lives with her family in Colorado.

Sent on an easy mission to find a lost Vampire, Franki thought she’d spend a few days on the west coast and be back on the front lines in no time.
Too bad Alex Coursiane, the guy she’s been hunting, just made her one of the undead.
Instead of getting to stake him through the uprights, she’s forced to go on a quest to find something called the Tome of Alabaster with the bloodsucker. On the run with the Fallen’s right behind them, they discover the Queen Bee Vampire is trying to find the portal that the Ancients used to cross over into our world. Who cares that it has been closed for eons? She plans to open it and unleash Armageddon.
For Franki and Alex, staying alive is the easy part. Falling in love just might be the thing that saves their souls.
~~~~~
A note from J. Morgan….
You’d think that living in Louisiana would make me an expert on Vampires. Apparently after gators it’s the one thing the rest of the world thinks we have in abundance. I for one have never seen one pushing a cart at Wal-Mart, but then again I’m an in and out type of guy when it comes to shopping. My lack of practical knowledge on vampires has in no way stopped me from writing about them.
But, do I truly write about vampires? Or, do I write books with vampires in them? I think I go with the second one. I write paranormal romances that aren’t necessarily paranormal romances, so who knows? Then what exactly do I write?
I write books that combine all the things I love. Vampires, the occasional ghost, myths, werewolves, and a love of perverting history to suit my own needs. If you got right down to it, I write romantic high adventure.
When I began my newest book, I wanted to push that envelope even further. There is nothing greater than taking a boy and a girl who really don’t like each other and throw them from one boiling pot to another until they look past the exterior to see the real people underneath. Once you manage to accomplish that, it’s a short step to falling in love. And, that is the greatest adventure of all.
To me personally, falling in love is the only story worth telling. The dressing up that goes along with it just enhances the experience. Sure, in the real world, you might not battle mythical creatures, demons, ancient mother goddesses or a bigfoot or twenty, but in the pages of books you can. You can do that and much more. I think it is my job as an author to make the journey as enjoyable and exciting as possible. Okay, in my case, dispelling belief comes into play a lot. That is part of the price of admission. Knowing when you crack the cyber-spine on one of my books that the real world doesn’t exist for the extent of your reading experience.
If I do my job right, you shouldn’t care about the reality surrounding you. So, I invite you now to step out of your safe little world, and step into mine. The excerpt below will give you a slight taste of the reality I like to call home. Enjoy!
BITE THE NECK THAT LOVES YOU by J. MORGAN
EXCERPT
Not to be outdone, or left behind, I elbowed my way past him. Let Tom Cruise get his poser on all he wanted. I came here to kick ass, not appear on the cover of Maxim.
Two shapes manifested through the glare and fog. My nose twitched, telling me they were wolves. Maegunous thugs by the looks of them. That was the only way werewolves would work for scumbag Vampires. Maegunous might be animals, but they were civilized animals. These were rogues run out of whatever tribe they were born into. I had friends in the Maegunous community, so I owed it to them to take these pitiful examples to their race down a peg or two.
The first one moved toward me with the cockiness that came from thinking he was at the top of the food chain. While he was still thinking of something studly to say, my knee lifted him into the air, from a crotch outward position of course. Big bad wolf to the left, actually looked shocked that a girl would take it upon herself to perform assault and battery on his brother. He was even more shocked when my fist pounded his nose even flatter than the good Lord had originally made it. While he tried putting his nasal passages back in their original upright positions, I kept on walking. The whole affair had been less satisfying than I’d hoped. Still, the evening was young.
A hand landing on my shoulder sent me spinning around. Alex’s blazing blue eyes glimmered down into mine. “I thought we agreed to not get us killed.”
“Are we dead?” The answer should have been obvious, but I waited for some sign I needed to give it to him.
“Not yet, but given time, maybe.” Well, point, but he was a jerk for bringing it up.
“Then, let’s get this over with before that happens.” I patted his cheek.
Leaving him to get my back, I strode into the club. After one step into the place, I staggered back two. This had not been what Alex had led me to expect. For one thing, men were doing hoochy bump and grinds against glittering poles. From everything he had told me, there should be scantily clad offenses to my sensibilities hoochying it up, not male offenses to my nothing. Blinking, I allowed my eyes to involuntarily widen to fully take in the sight of naked oiled up bodies doing things I’d been prepared to see my own sex doing. I knew things were progressive in Vegas, but this progressive?
Surviving a long bout with sanity, J. Morgan found a muse willing to work cheap and began work on his first book. Since then, his imagination has been seen running wild on several occasions. Luckily, the straight jackets have been limited to his time away from the computer. When not writing, ‘Jmo’ can be found in front of the TV pretending to write while really watching endless hours of drivel and laughing at the voices in his head who are constantly feeding him plot lines. While the voices may not be in total control just yet, one day they hope to have a book deal of their own. Until then, J. Morgan will continue to get to spend the royalty checks.
J. Morgan is currently procrastinating on books for two publishers but his current books, those his muse aren’t holding out on, came be found at these fine publishers; Champagne Books, Desert Breeze Publishing, and of course Amazon.
Christmas Special ~ Wedding Vows by Karen Docter
Wedding Vows
By Karen Docter
Dashing through the files
Looking for the perfect line
O’er the page we pore
Searching all the time
Words do sometimes bring
A smile, a sigh, a fight
A romance is a tender thing
To make things turn out right
Oh, wedding vows, wedding vows
This is what we say
Oh, what fun it is to love
That one man every day
Wedding vows, wedding vows
This is what we say
Oh, what fun it is to love
That one man every day
Our heroine just can’t see
What the hero has inside
Until we do reveal
The words he tries to hide
He may be buff and fine
A financial wiz at work
If we can’t find our line
He just sounds like a jerk
Oh, wedding vows, wedding vows
This is what we say
Oh, what fun it is to love
That one man every day
Wedding vows, wedding vows
This is what we say
Oh, what fun it is to love
That one man every day
So here we sit all day
Looking for the perfect line
That reveals a man’s true heart
A woman can’t decline
She’ll see the man beyond
The words he cannot say
We work to make their love
Turn out in just that way
Oh, wedding vows, wedding vows
This is what we say
Oh, what fun it is to love
That one man every day
Wedding vows, wedding vows
This is what we say
Oh, what fun it is to love
That one man every day, yeah!
**Author Peek** Interview with J. Morgan
**AUTHOR PEEK** Interview with J. MORGAN
Before we get started talking about your writing, tell us a little about yourself, where you’re from, what you do for a living (if you’re not a fulltime writer) what hobbies you have, etc. Whatever you’d like to share.
First off, Karen thanks for having me here today. It’s always a pleasure to stop by.
Since last we met, I am still J. Morgan. Things like that just don’t change, unless I went into witness protection or something. That hasn’t happened so I’m still me, just more me. More you ask? How can that be? Well, now I’m Grandpappy J. Morgan. Yep, but don’t think that will make me a kinder gentler Jmo. Okay, it has, because I say goo goo a lot now. I don’t remember saying it much before. I could have. As a writer with tons of us life experiences, I’m pretty certain I had a goo goo period before now. Still, I don’t see it cropping up in my books any time soon. Until that happens, I think I’ll continue bringing the funniest vampires and werewolves you’ll ever read.
1. How did you get started writing?
I’ve told the story so many times, even I’m bored with it. So instead, how about I go with how did I get started writing my latest book, the second book in my Bite Marks series. Easy, as I sat watching a Storage Wars marathon an idea occurred to me. What if a vampire got locked up in a storage unit? Better yet, what if a vampire slayer found said vampire in that locker? From there a book was born. The writer was there already so I can’t really take credit for it. The book on the other hand says the blame lies fully at my feet.
2. What genre(s) do you write in and why?
I write the funny side of things that go bump in the night. I don’t know why exactly. I guess I just like making fun of stuff that scares me. What can I say? I can’t afford therapy and writing seemed easier than actually being normal.
3. What is your favorite part of writing?
Honestly? Avoiding writing. There is nothing that is more fun than playing with my friends. Then, when they least expect it, snatching their muses and running for my computer. Man, do they get mad when they find out.
4. What is your least favorite part of writing ?
When my friends find out I stole their muses. You know authors can get downright vindictive about things like that.
5. Where do you get the ideas for your stories?
Uh, my friends. Not to mention popular media, and my own warped imagination. Seriously, my ideas come from a lot of places, and not even I can tell you when something might inspire a story or even a scene.
6. W hat is it that makes your writing different from all the others in your genre?
The experiences that went into propelling me into a career where I went from living inside my own imagination and forcing others to go with me. No writer can be anyone other than themselves and that comes through in their writing.
7. Are you an avid reader? When you do read someone else’s writing, what is your favorite genre?
I breathe books, and sneeze misused grammar. It’s an allergy. I can’t help myself. Seriously, I love to read. I truly can’t claim to have a favorite genre to read. There is so much to love about every one of them that picking one is too hard. I couldn’t hurt any of their feelings, so please don’t ask me to.
8. Tell us about your next book & when is it being published?
My newest book is Bite the Neck that Loves You, the second book in my Bite Marks Quintet. Well if, I get technical, it’s the eighth book in my Vampire series, but I’ve got a real good reason for breaking it up like I did. Think of it like this. What if Jmo wrote Lord of the Rings with funny vampires? Okay, that didn’t make sense to me either, but I’m still going with it.
Bite the Neck revolves around Franki, a vampire slayer, who was sent to find a lost Vampire, who fights on the side of good. Like I mentioned earlier, the book starts at a storage war unit and literally leads them around the world, and some parts that aren’t technically in this world. This book also closer ties my vampires to the werewolves in my Southern Werewolf Chronicles. This book also blows apart some secrets that have been rolling around in both series for awhile now. Needless to say, this is going to be a fun one. I know it was to write.
